TEFAF IS COMING

TEFAF MAASTRICHT MARCH 10–19, 2017

TEFAF MAASTRICHT Celebrating its 30th edition in March 2017, TEFAF Maastricht is widely regarded as the world’s premier fair for art, antiques and design. Featuring 275 prestigious dealers from some 20 countries, TEFAF Maastricht is a showcase for the finest art works currently on the market, all meticulously vetted prior to the fair for quality, authenticity and condition. Alongside the traditional areas of Old Master paintings, antiques and classical antiquities that cover approximately half of the fair, you can also find modern and contemporary art, photographs, jewellery, 20th-century design and works on paper, clearly laid out in seven specialist sections: TEFAF Paintings, TEFAF Antiques, TEFAF Paper, TEFAF Ancient Art, TEFAF Modern, TEFAF Design, TEFAF Haute Joaillerie. The eight section, TEFAF Showcase, established in 2008, each year introduces collectors at the Fair to some of the most interesting emerging galleries from around the world as it gives five selected recently established galleries the opportunity to participate in TEFAF Maastricht and to gain experience of being part of a major international art event. Since its first edition in 1988, TEFAF Maastricht has grown exponentially and today it is an unmissable event for collectors, curators, museum directors, conservators and art lovers generally.

VETTING A factor that sets TEFAF fairs apart from every other art fair is the thoroughness of its vetting. The TEFAF Maastricht Vetting Committee, made up of 180 experts working in 29 categories, scrutinizes every item to be presented at the fairs for quality, authenticity and condition. During the two days before the fair and in the absence of the exhibitors, TEFAF’s vetting experts study each artwork in detail, review provenance research and verify attribution. To do so, they have access to the most sophisticated technical equipment, including Hirox digital microscopes; UV and infrared reflectography; direct digital radiography; and X-ray fluorescence portable spectrometers. The vetting members use these tools in tandem with their own personal expertise and extensive experience.

TEFAF MAASTRICHT 2017 PRESENTS TEFAF CURATED: LA GRANDE HORIZONTALE TEFAF Maastricht is known for providing an unrivalled forum where historical connections are made and discovered. Designed to complement the fair’s modern and contemporary section, the third edition of TEFAF Curated: La Grande Horizontale, will be curated by Penelope Curtis, director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon. Under the unifying theme of the recumbent figure, Curtis aims to reflect on periods from the Antique to the present, enabling links to be made with works of different eras thus underlining the unparalleled depth and range of TEFAF Maastricht. The section will host a selected group of galleries each exhibiting works by contemporary artists.

COLLECTING COLLECTORS This year, the loan exhibition traditionally hosted in TEFAF Paper will feature the works from one of the most renowned Italian museums of the world, Rome’s Galleria Borghese. The extraordinary Villa that hosts the Museum was conceived since the very beginning as an exhibition space, embodying the history and development of Italian collecting from the 17th century - when Cardinal Scipione Borghese started the collection, until the 19th century - when it took its final form. TEFAF Maastricht considers Galleria Borghese an exquisite example of collecting passion: the Museum’s collection ranges from antique to modern, from sculptures to bas-reliefs, ancient mosaics and paintings dating between the 15th and the 18th century.

TEFAF SHOWCASE TEFAF Showcase gives recently established galleries the opportunity to participate in TEFAF Maastricht for one year and to gain experience of being part of an international fine art event. The pre-eminence of TEFAF among international art fairs has led to a long waiting list for potential exhibitors and TEFAF Showcase enables some of those keen to take part to do so. It also introduces visitors to the Fair to some of the most interesting emerging galleries from around the world. So far, almost fifty galleries have taken up this challenge, an experience they regard as very positive. TEFAF Showcase 2017 will feature five galleries from the UK, Japan, France and Belgium. www.tefaf.com/showcase

TEFAF MUSEUM RESTORATION FUND The TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund was set up in 2012 to help museums and institutions worldwide restore and conserve works of art in their collections. It is one of a selection of initiatives run by the not-for-profit European Fine Art Foundation which demonstrates the Foundations ongoing dedication to supporting and protecting the arts. Museums and institutions that have attended TEFAF Maastricht are eligible to apply for the grants, which are awarded by an independent panel of experts. The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) has awarded grants to three distinct projects either side of the Atlantic. One is the restoration and reconstruction of the never before seen work by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) entitled Absolution (c.1900) in the MusĂŠe Rodin collection, France. The other is the conservation of Judith with the Head of Holofernes (c.1570) by Titian (1488-1576), which has been on near constant display since entering the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, USA, in 1938. The final project is the conservation of Der Blaue Reiter (1912), a journal edited by Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and Franz Marc (1880-1916). It was acquired jointly in 2015 by the RKD, Stedelijk Museum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and Gemeentenmuseum, all based in The Netherlands. Presentations about each project will be displayed at TEFAF Maastricht from 10-19 March.
