n From Page 3 help us bring Jason Lockwood’s killers to justice. “Mr Lockwood was brutally murdered in his own home. “A team of detectives is working to piece together information about his lifestyle and the events that led to his death. “We know that he battled an alcohol problem and was unable to hold down a job. “But although he was a solitary figure, we believe he did have some friends in the area, and we are urging people who knew him to help us establish the circumstances of his final hours. “This is a close-knit community, and we are asking people to think back to the events of Tuesday and ask themselves whether they saw anything that struck them as unusual during the last week.” Anyone able to oblige is asked to call police on 101 ext 69191.
CEREBRAL palsy sufferer Archie Anderson’s family are now almost two thirds of the way towards raising the £50,000 they need to pay for a life-changing operation for the five-year-old. His mum Marie hopes the pioneering surgery, to be carried out in the US, will enable the Ashington youngster to walk unaided. Her dream is that one day Archie will be able to run around and play with his new little sister Ava Mae, born last week. The 40-year-old said: “We are overjoyed at the new addition to the family, and Archie loves his little sister. “We are just getting used to the change in routine that comes with a new baby. “Our dream is that when Ava is old enough to run and walk, then her big brother will be able to run and walk alongside her.” To help ensure they have the cash they need to make that dream come true, Marie and partner Cameron Bushell are now steeling themselves to abseil down the Newcastle’s Malmaison hotel in May. “One thing we will not lose sight of is the need to continue fundraising, which is why Cameron, me and Archie’s dad Allan are planning to do the abseil as it will help add a significant amount to the total,” she said. gery Archie needs to strengthen the muscles in his legs. A charity night at Ashington’s White House Unique Social Club on Friday raised nearly £2,000, and the band Family Affair will be performing again at the nearby Fell-Em-Doon club this Saturday. Among those there to lend their support
this weekend will be England cricketer Steve Harmison. Marie said: “Steve and his family have been fantastic. To have his support means so much to us. People continue to be incredibly generous and kind.” Ahead of the riverside abseil on Sunday, May 13, a host of fundraising activities have been
lined up including a sky-dive at Peterlee, a bungee jump off Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge, a coastal walk, a coast-to-coast bike ride and a band night at the Blyth and Tyne pub in Blyth. Celebrity lookalike Gary Tiplady, of Newcastle, has also helped out by creating a wire sculpture to be auctioned off to raise funds. Gary, the spitting image of actor Richard Kiel, alias Jaws in the James Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, is now carving out a career as a sculptor and has made an artwork depicting two magpies. “Archie doesn’t have a favourite animal, so Gary decided to make a magpie scultpure in the hope that it will attract interest from Newcastle United fans and raise lots and lots of money,” said Marie. tegan.chapman@northeast-press.co.uk

A YOUNGSTER has been given a treat to put the smile back on his face as he recovers from a major operation. Cerebral palsy sufferer Callum Brown, of Seaton Sluice, was paid a visit by two Newcastle United stars after undergoing surgery at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. Defenders James Perch and Davide Santon popped into the hospital to cheer Callum up last Thursday after he underwent a painful op on his hips. He can’t wait. “He was really looking forward to meeting the players because he had been in so much pain. “It was something to take his mind off it all.” The footballers’ visit wasn’t the only good news the seven-year-old

It undercuts honest traders, defrauds the public purse and takes advantage of some of society’s most vulnerable people.” Both restaurants now have 30 days to show that they carried out proper checks on their workers or face having to pay the fines.
