CHARITY NIGHT HOSTED BY FOOTBALL LEGEND HELPS TAKE SURGERY APPEAL FUND PAST £15,000 MARK

Callum third of way to £50k target By Tegan Chapman A YOUNGSTER’S family are now almost a third of the way towards raising the cash they need to enable him to undergo a lifechanging operation. A fundraising campaign for cerebral palsy sufferer Callum Brown has passed the £15,000 mark, putting the family well on their way to amassing the £50,000 it will cost to take the seven-year-old to the US to undergo pioneering surgery. Callum’s parents Sharon and Neil, of Derwent Road in Seaton Sluice, set up the fund to pay for dorsal rhizotomy surgery at the children’s hospital in St Louis in Missouri in the hope that the op will enable Callum to take his first steps unaided. Mum Sharon said: ”We are delighted to have raised more than £15,000 so far. It’s a great way to start the year knowing we are

nearly a third of the way to our goal. “Everyone has been so supportive, and we have been carrying out bag-packs and other events to raise the money, and we hope it continues until we reach our target.” A sold-out charity auction was held last Thursday at Seaton Sluice Social Club, organised by the village’s Millway Garage and hosted by football legend Malcolm Macdonald, raising more than £2,600, and further bag-packs at Iceland in Whitley Bay are being planned this week. “We are so grateful to everyone who has donated or helped us out so far. We have been blown away by the support,” said Sharon. “A massive thank you to Millway Garage for organising the auction night, and to Charlie Davis, the Seaton Delaval builder, for donating £1,000 and also letting us auction his box at St James’s Park for last night’s game against Manchester United.” In July, Great Britain triathlete Joanna Reed, along with 24 other riders, will be cycling 200 miles from Edinburgh to Newcastle in one day, and each will be aiming to raise at least £1,000 for the charity. Fundraisers get deeply dippy for Archie too DIPPING in and splashing out paid off for another charity appeal for a fellow cerebral palsy sufferer also hoping to head to the US for the same op. Family and friends of Archie Anderson took part in Whitley Bay’s annual New Year’s Day dip in fancy dress to raise cash to help raise the £50,000 needed to pay for the surgery the Ashington five-year-old believes could change his life. His mum Marie said: “Everyone was buzzing beforehand, and we were really excited when we got there at seeing lots of family, friends and well-wishers who had turned up to support Archie. Archie even dressed up himself, as Darth Vader. “We all had a great day, and it looks as if we raised over £1,000.” The charity has now collected more than £18,000. Cramlington’s Stephen and Kirstie O’Neill also took part in the dip in aid of ex-Blyth Spartans player Scott Bell following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease in May last year.
