Woman punched in face by robber
A HANDFUL of entrants from south east Northumberland were among the winners at this year’s Pride of Northumberland Pride Awards. Organised by Northeast Press, publisher of the News Post Leader, and Metro Radio, the awards celebrate excellence in the community and reward groups and individuals for going above and beyond the call of duty. A dozen children, grown-ups and groups were given the recognition they deserve at a ceremony held at the Alnwick Garden last Thursday. Sponsored by Northumberland County Council, Banks Group, NBSL, Gentoo, Berwick Borough Housing, Northumbrian Water, Zodiac Training and Spacecraft, this year’s awards were the third. The event’s judges had such a difficult task on their hands that they could not separate the nominees for the child of courage award, and all three were declared winners, including Cory Davison. A WOMAN was punched in the face as she had her mobile phone and handbag snatched in Cramlington. The 30-year-old was walking along Village Road at 1.30am on Sunday and speaking on her mobile phone when she was robbed. The robber grabbed the woman’s phone, punched her in the face, then stole her handbag too. Afterwards, he ran off in the direction of Thirston Drive. The robber is described as being white, of slim build and aged 19 or 20. He had short dark hair and big eyes, and he was wearing a black padded jacket, blue jeans and white trainers. The woman is said to have been left shaken by the incident but not injured. Anyone nearby at the time and able to offer any information potentially leading to the arrest of the robber is asked to contact police on 03456 043043 ext 69191.
BLUE SKY THINKING SET TO GIVE £200m PROPOSALS AN UNEXPECTED HEAD START

Hundreds of jobs could be on the way sooner than expected as plans for Widdrington’s Blue Sky Forest project look set to get up and running years ahead of schedule. It had been thought the tourism and wind energy proposals that make up the ambitious project would take years to get off the ground, but it is now set to go ahead as a single development. That breakthrough follows the £200m scheme being given ministerial support and suggestions that it could be fasttracked under a proposed new law. Northumberland County Council’s south east area committee welcomed the progress being made on the project at its meeting last week at Blyth’s Isabella Centre.

Milburn Douglas, county councillor for Lynemouth, said a business and funding plan had been drawn up for the initiative and it is hoped that further details can be presented to the county council next month or the month after. The Blue Sky Forest project is being led by the Widdrington Regeneration Partnership. If approved, it would consist of an international-standard golf course, sports academy, Olympicsize swimming pool, adventure centre, children’s activity centre, 500m indoor ski slope, lakes, shops and a hotel. It would be built on 2,500 acres of former opencast land at Stobswood and nearby Maidens Hall. The estimated cost of the project is £200m, but that could change.
