Chance to play sex line pensioner role
WOMEN of a certain age are being sought to play the role of pensioner cleaners in a new production. Day8 Productions are looking for women aged around 60 to play the parts of Gladys, Elsie and Olive, who, due to the threat of redundancy, start up a telephone sex line known as The Telephone Belles. There is also a part for a young male of around 20 to play their ageist boss. The first rehearsal is 7.30pm tonight (Thursday, May 3), at Whitley Bay High School main hall. Youngster takes on West End show role By Tegan Chapman tegan.chapman@northeast-press.co.uk
A BUDDING young actor from Wallsend has taken to the stage to star in a blockbuster musical at the Sunderland Empire. Eight-year-old Neil Maromo, from Howdon, has been chosen to share the role of Jerome in South Pacific, which runs at the Empire until Saturday, May 12. And the West End stars of South Pacific took time out this week to pass on their expertise to the next generation of north east starlets who are joining them in the musical. St Bernadette’s RC Primary School pupil Neil, pictured left, attends the Sage Academy, but this is the first time
he has appeared in a large scale production. Neil’s dad Rhodwell said: “I am very proud of him for being given a part in such a big show. “He enjoys acting and sometimes he says he wants to be an actor and sometimes he wants to be a doctor, so I don’t know if he will follow it through, but he enjoys it.” Neil is one of six budding stars aged eight to 11, who will share the three parts of Ngana and Jerome, the illegitimate children of Emile de Becque and Bloody Mary’s helper. Neil and the other young stars met with West End stars Matthew Cammelle, Rebecca Thornhill, Alex Ferns and Daniel Koek ahead of the show that is on a nationwide tour, direct from an acclaimed run in the West End. Set on a tropical island dur-
ing World War Two, South Pacific is the sweeping romantic story of two couples, threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices. South Pacific was the first Broadway production the Rodgers & Hammerstein Estate had allowed to be staged since the musical originally opened in 1949 and ran for almost five years. The score includes famous tracks Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Bali Ha’i, I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy, Younger than Springtime, Happy Talk and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame. South Pacific is at the Sunderland Empire until Saturday, May 12. Tickets priced from £14.50 are available by calling the Sunderland Empire box office on 0844 871 3022.
