Pupils tell the story of Easter
New build for state-of-the-art facility the chosen option after consultation By Tegan Chapman THE former Asda store site has been identified as the preferred option for a new state-of-the-art leisure facility in Ashington. A community consultation revealed the Lintonville Terrace location as the public’s choice. More than 1,500 people had their say in the two-month consultation exercise to seek local views on proposed sites for the facility and services to be included in it. The results will now be considered by Northumberland County Council’s executive on April 16. The council will be recommended to agree the move and that services and activities to be delivered from the new facility will include a pool, gym, studio spaces, a library, cafe, social and meeting areas, access to information, county council services and a registrar’s office. It will also call for further work to be undertaken to assess how family-orientated activities such as ten-pin bowling and soft play might be incorporated. The council is also expected to endorse the recommendation that the new facility includes a sports hall which can be used for a range of leisure activities

PUPILS carried the cross with pride as they performed the Easter story to classmates and teachers last week. Children from Bede Academy in Blyth staged a special assembly in Biblical costumes to celebrate Easter. Romans and disciples recounted the tale of how Jesus was crucified and then resurrected using the different symbols from the Passion narrative including the palm branch, the crown of thorns and the cross. The festive performance was interspersed with a video clip from the Miracle Maker, an Easter cartoon detailing the life of Jesus. An audience of enthusiastic singers joined the cast in a resounding chorus of Lord of the Dance. Bede Primary headteacher Irene Watson said: “They worked really hard to remember their lines, the performance was delightful and thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike.”
POLICE have been cracking down on antisocial behaviour in Blyth after groups of youths were seen boozing in Ridley Park last week. A number of passersby reported disorderly behaviour to the police who arrested two males, issued direction-to-leave notices and seized alcohol. Some were also taken home to their parents and advised of their behaviour. Acting Sergeant Chrissie Skillen said: “Over the coming weeks there will be increased patrols in the area and we will be working with partner agencies, such as Homes for Northumberland, social services, trading standards and Northumberland County Council to tackle any further problems. “We remind parents of their obligations and responsibilities to know the whereabouts of their children.”
