THOUSANDS of music fans braved wet weather at the weekend for the seventh annual Mouth of Tyne Festival. The festival featured a street parade, fireworks, performers from around the world, a pageant and live music at Tynemouth Priory from British soul veteran Beverley Knight and X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, along with Scouting for Girls, the Buzzcocks, Neville Staple and Martin Stephenson. For the first time, the festival kicked off on a Friday night, with a sold-out show by Alexandra Burke and Beverley Knight. An army of Burke’s fans began queueing outside the priory before the barriers were even put in place. Felicity Baldwin, from York, was at the front of the queue. She said: “I arrived at 2pm because I want to be right at the front for Alexandra. I’m a massive fan. “There’s a group of us from TweamBurke, which is like a Twitter fan club, and we come from all over to see her wherever she goes. “I’ve been a fan since the first time she was on the X Factor and Louis Walsh kicked her out, but when she came back the second time, I just thought she had to win because she is an amazing singer.” The 22-year-old Londoner showed why she was chosen as the nation’s X Factor winner in 2008 with an amazing acoustic version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, as well as belting out her top tracks Broken Heels, All Night Long and the amazing Bad Boys. The 38-year-old performed a mixture of old and new songs with classic tracks like Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Greatest Day, as well as tracks from her new album, Soul UK, including a moving cover of George Michael’s One More Try. On Saturday night, pop band Scouting for Girls wowed the crowds, despite a torrential downpour, with tracks including their number one hit This Ain’t A Love Song, She’s So Lovely and Elvis Ain’t Dead. Punk band the Buzzcocks, led by Pete Shelley, took to the stage at the priory on Sunday to round off a weekend of music.

It’s good to be back, says soul survivor
Beverley Knight.
AFTER 17 years in the business, Beverley Knight has earned her title as the queen of British soul. She has come a long way since her debut album in 1995, clocking up an MBE, seven studio albums and the accolade of being the only artist to headline the Mouth of the Tyne Festival twice. She first took to the stage at Tynemouth Priory in 2008, when torrential rain threatened to make the show a washout. Before Friday night’s performance, she said: “I felt so sorry for the fans last time I was here. It was pouring with rain – I mean really pouring. “I am delighted to have been asked back, and it’s lovely to be the only artist to have been invited here twice. “I love the north east fans because they are always loud. “Whenever you go on tour, when you come to the north east, you know it’s going to be a long night, in the best possible sense. You know that somewhere it’s going to get messy.” Knight will take to the road again in November to promote her new album, but she is warning gig-goers that they’ll need to be the partying type to cope. “If you can gig hard for two hours live, this is the show for you,” she said. n Read the full version of this interview online at www.newsguardian.co.uk
