By Petra Silfverskiold County council chiefs have hit back at claims that they are leaving Northumberland in the slow lane as the rest of the country gets superfast broadband connections. The council’s Conservative group leader, Peter Jackson and fellow Tory Wayne Daley claim a new report is a damning indictment of the authority’s policies on investment in broadband infrastructure. Council leader Jeff Reid, a Lib Dem, has hit back, insisting that nothing could be further from the truth. The report, presented to the council’s economic prosperity and strategic services overview and scrutiny committee, details funding difficulties and the reluctance of BT to invest in rural areas. Coun Jackson, of Ponteland South, said: “The report says that the best we can hope for is a large network of small and commercially unattractive exchanges that will be exorbitantly expensive to upgrade. “It should serve as a wake-up call for a complacent administration that has repeatedly failed to bid for funding made available by central government
