Territorial Army soldiers from the region have been busy in the run up to Armed Forces Day, with celebrations to mark The Queen’s official birthday.
Officer Cadet Nicola Hargreaves, 28, and Lance Bombardier Michelle Garbutt, 31, were members of a gun crew from Blyth who fired one of three 105mm light guns across the river Ouse at the north of England’s official Royal Salute in Museum Gardens, as part of a 21-gun salute in York. Nicola, who is a member of 101 Regiment Royal Artillery’s battery in Cowpen Road, Blyth, said: “Even though it was the first time we have fired the Royal Salute, we were not nervous because we have done so much practice.

Regular and reserve units from across south east Northumberland will be joined by veterans and cadets to parade through Alnwick next weekend to mark Armed Forces Day. The troops, including TA soldiers from the Fifth Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in Ashington, will parade through the town at noon, from Bowburn picnic area to the castle. At 1pm there will be a Cadet Tattoo and families afternoon at Bowburn Park, where performers include 2344 (Longbenton) Sqn ATC cadet band. The event will be a picnic in the park celebration, and visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drink. In the evening there will be a Beat the Retreat concert within the Alnwick Castle grounds starting at 6pm, where performers include the Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Northumberland Scottish Pipes and Drums, Lemington Male Voice Choir and an RAF drill presentation.
