Territorial Army soldiers from Alnwick were among those taking part in a St George’s Day parade through Newcastle at the weekend. Around 150 soldiers, including those from Alnwick Platoon, the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, paraded from the Civic Centre through the town on Saturday as part of their annual parade to mark the day of their birth. A service was held at St Nicholas’ Cathedral. Lieutenant Colonel Karl Mace said: “St George’s Day is our regimental birthday, so it is an honour to parade through Newcastle. St George’s Day is particularly important to the Fusiliers, and it is a very important day for the English.”
Children at Barndale House School in Alnwick were thrilled to receive Easter eggs from members of Blyth Valley Motorcycle Action Group. More than 500 bikers took part in the annual Easter egg run , a 52-mile journey from Woodhorn via Widdrington, Amble, Felton, Bedlington, Blyth and Seghill, collecting 1,100 eggs which were distributed to special needs schools in Northumberland and hospitals.

Book-loving teachers Mark Graham and Rachel Tuxford decided on a novel way to celebrate their wedding day. They headed straight from the marriage ceremony at Eshott Hall to Barter Books in Alnwick, where owners Stuart and Mary Manley poppped open a bottle of champagne to mark the occasion. Their book-themed wedding included a cake in the shape of a row of novels.
