GRAFFITI artists have been adding their own unique ‘tags’ to an Ashington building after they were given a blank canvas. While some residents view the artwork as an eyesore that brings an area down. But the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers have brought their own touch of artistic talent to the town’s YMCA building as part of the centre’s graffiti project. The fusiliers have teamed up with the YMCA to help strengthen links in the community, and soldiers from the Ashington TA unit painted their hackle onto the wall of the building in North View. Captain Chris Hall said: “We are from different ends of the spectrum, but we both work with young people and give them something useful and meaningful to do. “We have young people doing good work in the community whether they are doing it wearing a hackle or they are doing it within the YMCA, it’s great to bring those two groups of people together to show what’s on offer.” Rob Cox, chief executive of Northumberland

Clinics aim to reduce motorcycle accidents
TWO clinics are being held in south east Northumberland in a bid to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes on the region’s roads this summer. Northumbria Police are conducting two ‘cornering clinics’ over the coming weeks to encourage safe riding. The presentations will also be supported by advanced motorcyle observers and assesors from Northumbria Advanced Motorcyclists, a local group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The clinics will be held at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, West Hartford Business Park, on Saturday, April 21, and Saturday, May 19, both at 10am. The clinics are free and last about two hours. There is no need to pre-book. Pc Richie Eccleston from the road safety unit, said: “Safe bikers are welcomed by Northumbria Police and what we are trying to do is help people get the most from their bikes without getting hurt or causing problems for others.”
