Mixed Media

Page 1

This zine features work done by graphic design students in our spring 2018 Design Process class. I chose the title “Mixed Media” to reflect our sketchbook assignment, wherein we were challenged to use different and new mediums to create unique ideas and images. I can confidently say that this class was a fun challenge. The prompts for our sketchbooks and some of the in class assignments encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and try new mediums and methods of art. It also forced me to come up with new ways of solving graphic problems and issues I hadn’t seen before in my own work.

CMYK and Following the Footnotes The page on the right includes curated examples from other students from our CMYK assignment. The CMYK assignment has us culling parts of our sketchbook entries and changing the images to layers of duotone Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black layers, and inluded a quote from one of our assigned chapters from our Uncommon Genius textbook. The next two pages include examples from the Following the Footnotes assignment. This assignment was presented to us from guest artist Michael Aberman via Skype. We were instructed to start on the wikipedia page for “Apple, (the fruit, not the conglomerate) and would click on other random wikipedia links that caught our interest within that article until we had six pages open, then we would layer images together based on those links.

A.G.I assignment The image on the right is one of the images I produced for our A.G.I assignment. I used the Halpern Agency New Year Poster (below) for inspiration. I decided to use marker to get the layered look of the Halpern Poster. The idea came from the Encouraging Luck chapter in our textbook. One passage talked about how artists need to train themselves to “see things around them and pay attention to small details. I absolutely love when images, comic books, or tv shows have hidden messages in them, or clues to other parts of the series, so I like to incorporate that into my work when I can. I used a slightly darker color of marker to put some Cuneiform symbols into the circles.

Student Portrait Draw your favorite thing to eat/drink? Pepsi and my favorite foods are hamburgers and steak.

What is your favorite website? I really like going on Webtoons and reading comics.

Who would you hate to be stuck in a room with? I would despise being stuck in a room with Trump.

What is your favorite typeface? Currently, my favorite typeface is Baskerville.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah.

2nd A.G.I image This was the other image I did for the A.G.I assignment I did. This was based off of the Public Theatre posters Paula Scher did in the 80’s. Since I took History of Graphic Design and was introduced to her work, I’ve really admired her type layouts. The prompt for this assignment was from the chapter Despair and Isolation in our textbook. The top portion is made up of questions I had based on one of the main themes of the chapter, which centered around an embittered artist. The bottom half are things we tell ourselves to get through tough times in our art, as well as things we thing about art that lead may lead us to pursue it.
