FOUNDER’S LETTER
I
f we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that a female’s voice is not only something worth listening to—it’s a force to be reckoned with. Women’s achievements in the past few years—from earning Nobel Peace Prizes to running globally successful businesses—prove we all have a little Wonder Woman in us. This issue showcases some of the area’s powerhouse females who are leading us into a new era of ingenuity and intrigue. Silvia Karman Cubiñá steered The Bass art museum through an extensive renovation but never took her foot off the pedal during its two-year closure, presenting two monumental public sculptures that were installed outside its door at Collins Park. “The idea was to reach beyond the museum’s walls and inspire those who are not immediately inclined to go inside,” she says. We also write about Ellen Salpeter, the director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, who will open the museum’s new doors December 1. On the cusp of its relocation, Salpeter tells us how she hopes the museum becomes an agent for those thirsty for art, as well as for those who aren’t even aware of their thirst. A feature I’m excited to present is our story on female brokers. The article offers a snapshot of the many women who make up a team of fiercely intelligent, driven agents at ONE Sotheby’s International Realty. These women exemplify qualities any company would be proud to harness, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and proud that they have decided to join me at my firm. This issue also includes pieces on other notables, including fashion photographer Greg Lotus, who takes us into his Miami Beach home, and Nathan Browning of Island Planning Corp., who oversaw the landscape architecture at the Miami Design District. We also spotlight the magnanimous Nasir and Nargis Kassamali, the founders of Luminaire who have a heavy hand in finding a cure for cancer. Throughout this issue, we hope the energetic spirit of the subjects and their heartfelt work inspires you. It has certainly inspired us.

CITCO MARBLE Based in Verona, Italy, Citco challenges architects and designers to think outside the realm of traditional furniture design by using marble as the medium. Here are three examples from the recent Salone del Mobile fair. BY LOLA THÉLIN
26 ONE LIFE
ZAHA HADID
Zaha Hadid never shied away from geometry, and Orbi, a pair of granite centerpieces featured in Citco’s design collection, is further proof of her ability to liberate shapes. Hadid, the Iraqi-born British architect and first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, died unexpectedly last March in Miami. Her company, Zaha Hadid Architects, is now managed by business partner Patrik Schumacher. This collaboration between Hadid and Citco marks six years since their first co-creation. Camiran Rasool, founder and CEO of Citco, admits the beginning was wobbly. “It wasn’t an easy task to knock on Zaha’s door and convince her to design for us, but I always loved her vision,” Rasool says. “We tried and kept getting no for an answer until I finally convinced her team to visit our facilities and see exactly what we are doing.” For Citco’s limited-edition collection, Zaha Hadid Architects
designed two fluid diagonal shapes that generate torsional movement and can stand on their own as art pieces or serve as tables. Orbi captures both Hadid’s fantasy and rigorous architectural styles. “I admire every piece from Zaha,” Rasool says. “Each one is art.” The limited-edition Orbi is available in two sizes and colors.
ORBI’s design transfers the diagonal forces within Zaha Hadid’s renowned architectural forms, generating a twisting motion that defines each piece. Each piece can hold objects for display or used alone, an exemplar of Hadid’s virtuosity with fluid geometries and Citco’s craftsmanship.
ONE LIFE 27
FERRUCCIO LAVIANI Think of the most common descriptor for marble. Heavy, right? Now throw that narrative away. Citco reaffirms that complex marble design possibilities are in fact realities with Slice by Italian-born designer Ferruccio Laviani. Laviani has helped guide Citco’s design frontier since 2007, when the company presented its first design collection. Every year, the collection pushes marble design capabilities forward, from research and development to technology. The new Citco table takes its name from its form. Multicolored layers, or slices, of marble rings are stacked, appearing unbalanced, around the piece’s center of gravity. The base also challenges the table norm, comprising circles in various diameters. Both design aspects give an illusion of kinetic movement, but every marble piece is melded into 28 ONE LIFE
a single volume. The load of the marble is lightened by the empty space and thinness of each ring. With this dynamic arrangement, Laviani—whose work focuses on product design, interior design, art direction and graphics—delivers a challenging game of folds and curves to Citco, which in turn brings the airy design to life.
With an almost kinetic movement, the individual pieces of the Ferruccio Laviani’s Slice table are materialized and melded in a single volume.
ORA ÏTO Designer Ora ïto and his sculpted chaise lounge, Venus, are reminders of the inherent possibilities a slab of marble holds as well as the artisanal craftsmanship demonstrated by Citco. Only two months before Salone del Mobile 2017, the acclaimed international furniture fair in Milan, ïto reached out to Rasool. “He had seen Citco designs and knew the possibilities. There was a phone call and an appointment, and before we knew it, we had a chaise lounge,” Rasool says. Instead of the typical nine-month window to create a marble design, the Citco team brought this design to life just in time for the fair. Ora ïto is the adopted name of the freethinking French designer, who is reputed for futuristic designs that are spirited, fresh and sensual. This bare marble asymmetrical piece is a celebration of his design DNA; it is at once streamlined and powerful. “The biomorphic and polished curves, rising and falling, precariously floating from one side
to the other, cry out to be caressed,” ïto writes of his design. The chaise lounge, a limited series of eight copies, is intended for use outdoors in a garden or terrace or indoors with a leather lining. “Venus is amazing because it’s comfortable, even though it is carved from one block of marble,” Rasool says. “Ora has an idea every day. We’ll see much more of him in the future.”
Ora ïto’s Venus is a triumph of drawing in space by a visual designer who digitally sculpts marble, centimeter by centimeter, with amazing dynamic precision.

THE POWER OF PRECISION Dashi offers a glimpse into the deft touch of Japanese cuisine.
BY JEN KARETNICK
I
f Miami were a person, she’d be covered in tattoos and gold body glitter, spewing color into the Atlantic breezes, the eternal flighty grasshopper to every assiduous ant that ever existed. Perhaps this is why Dashi, which opened in the spring inside the River Yacht Club, is a welcoming sight for patrons who crave less of Miami’s culinary show and more of some telling authenticity. Finely attenuated to understated rigor in restaurant design and epicurean execution, Dashi is the opposite of flamboyance. Yet the 80-seat, Miami River-side restaurant, owned by Stephane Dupoux and helmed by Japanese-born chef Shuji Hiyakawa, a descendant of master udon makers and protégé of Masaharu Morimoto, makes an enormous impression on all the body’s senses. “A lot of what Chef Shuji Hiyakawa does is subtle and nuanced, but it requires a tremendous amount of sourcing and prep work to deliver a deceptively simple dish,” Dupoux says. “Ideally, our clients understand and seek experiences that linger on in the mind for days.” I can attest that the Dashi experience does indeed linger long after patrons leave. Days after dining, I was still dreaming about items such as the toro tartar, a fine chop of tuna topped with Russian osetra caviar. The just-coming-to-room-temperature fish and caviar were matched with fragile rounds of baguette made with nori. The pairing was oceanic, big with umami and metaphor, which the chef also strives for with his ocean scallops. There, he actually pours a dollop of Pacific Ocean water imported from Japan into the yuzu juice around the scallop, which is also laden with caviar. Like many of the ingredients, the fish for the sushi and sashimi are largely imported, if not from Japan—such as the familiar hamachi (yellowtail) or milder kinmedai (golden eye snapper)—then from places like the Mediterranean, New Zealand, California and Alaska. The differences in available fish and seafood make the sushi and sashimi menu a nice change from the norm, but what is really striking is one of the items on the list of maki: a vegetarian roll made with sauteed mushrooms and fried shallots. Tasting at once earthy and buttery, this maki segues magnificently into appetizers such as the beef tataki, which is also garnished with fried shallots and myoga (Japanese ginger) and moistened with a bit of soy. The architectural design of the beef tataki is impressive—a carefully arranged pile of beef that looks like a miniature garland of roses around a winning horse’s neck—and apropos, as this dish, with its high-quality raw beef just briefly edged by fire, is a victory for any self-respecting carnivore.
30 ONE LIFE
Wagyu beef features in two entrees, one a sukiyaki and the other a shabu-shabu, which means you can cook it yourself—or, as the waitstaff puts it, “You do the work.” If you prefer to be employed by winding udon noodles in a chiri renge (soup spoon), then go for your protein with the beef udon made with braised short rib. Our server talked us into the spicy seafood udon instead, which was a hit on all angles of the palate and contained plump, frilly clams that were shelled prior to entering the broth. Talk about having the hard stuff done for you—the only thing left to do was experience the rapture. The chef truly demonstrates his control over noodle-making with the slippery, toothsome udon, but he does just as well with the cha-soba salad, a tri-vegetable dish that showcases not only the thin buckwheat noodles, but also the small groupings of shiitake mushrooms, edamame and shavings of asparagus piled on top. The servers may more frequently recommend the tomato salad dressed with yuzu, wasabi oil and soy-flavored salt, but you can’t go wrong with either beautifully constructed plate as a starter on a hot evening or a light lunch on a sunny afternoon. The servers are particularly educated at Dashi, which is a necessity given the deceptive complexity of the cuisine. They also happily recommend their favorite dishes, from the lightly battered, pan-seared cauliflower served with a rich coconut curry to the diligently trimmed duck breast, a lineup of tender ruby rectangles dusted with five-spice powder and redolent with su-miso (a vinegar-miso dressing). “We’ve done our due diligence to educate the staff to not only share our vision but also engage our clients in a new way,” Dupoux says. “We source our products from all over the world and often encourage clients to taste the differences in items that come from different areas.” What this means is that if you want to relax, enjoy the scenery—perhaps watch for a manatee in the Miami River or note who’s coming and going from the lounge in the adjoining River Yacht Club—and put your culinary fate in the hands of your server and the chef, it’s omakase, or chef’s choice, all the way. Just be warned: You might not even have room for a little bento box of sweets, let alone more than one—OK, two—cocktails made with select Japanese Toki whisky or house-made, coconut-infused TY KU sake. Don’t say we didn’t tell you: Even minimalism adds up over courses. Dashi is located at the River Yacht Club, 401 SW Third Avenue, Miami. For dinner reservations, call 786.870.5304 or visit dashirestaurant.com.

A SENSE OF PLACE Island Planning Corp. transforms buildings and their neighborhoods, including the Miami Design District, with nature’s precious resource: trees.

A
tree grows in Miami, occupying some of the most expensive square footage in the city. Despite extensive discussion over what to plant where in the evolving upscale Design District, the towering Pachira aquatica thrives in the courtyard of Hermès, the iconic French fashion boutique located on Northeast 39th Street. “That tree occupies about $12 million worth of retail space,” says Nathan Browning, founder of the Miami Beach-based Island Planning Corp. “And that tree costs about $100,000. Ironically, it’s called the money tree. The Chinese believe it brings good luck financially.” Browning knows all about the Latin names of trees, along with their nicknames, places of origin and where they grow best. He also knows how to move mature, 50-foot trees from one corner of the planet to another. Since 2004, his company has provided master plans, landscape design and installations for some of the most exclusive properties in the world, including the Aman Venice, the Italian hotel where George Clooney celebrated his wedding to Amal Alamuddin in 2014. The odds did not favor an American winning the coveted role of landscaping the nearly 500-year-old palace, which features one of the few private gardens on Venice’s famed Grand Canal. But Browning persuaded the Italians that he was the man for the job. Armed with historical documents depicting the original gardens—documents the reviewing committee had never before seen—Browning described how he would source native plants, such as cork trees, to create a modern masterpiece. While Browning says he always had an affinity for 36 ONE LIFE
trees, he took a circuitous route to becoming one of the world’s leading landscape architects. An avid surfer and free-diver, he studied marine affairs and anthropology at the University of Miami. In college, he made extra cash by finding and installing large trees for local clients. When he was in his 20s, he took snowboarding trips to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. On one visit, a friend introduced him to Harrison Ford’s then-wife, screenwriter Melissa Mathison, which led to dinner with the actor and a job working in the Bahamas with Ford’s friend on a project headed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Browning has remained in demand ever since. Before signing on to assist developer Craig Robins in realizing his dream for the Miami Design District, Browning worked for Cheval Blanc, the boutique hotel brand for international luxury goods conglomerate LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton). His projects ranged from a 100-acre resort in the Turks and Caicos or an entire island in the Adriatic Sea to private homes in Palm Beach and Miami. Robins really got to know Browning’s genius when Robins hired Browning to landscape his residence, a project that included incorporating exotic edibles while making room for a basketball court and a prized sculpture by David Adjaye. Robins considers Browning uniquely qualified to realize his plans for Miami. He credits Browning’s landscape design with uniting the disparate architectural and sculptural elements found in the various plazas and arcades comprising the Design District, including Buckminster Fuller’s bubble house and the blue glass building by Sou
Fujimoto, who designed London’s “Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013.” “I think it’s an important component,” Robins says. “Whether you’re looking at Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome, Zaha Hadid’s Elastika, Sou Fujimoto’s building or Nathan’s landscaping plan, it’s all really powerful.” Browning’s appreciation for landscape design comes from his parents, who are accomplished designers in their own right. His father, Gordon, appreciates trees and native plants so much that when he finished landscaping the family home on Kumquat Avenue in Coconut Grove, he did the same for his neighbor’s homes. The neighborhood’s appearance improved, and so did the property values. The concept that plants can add value to a property—particularly if they are compatible with the surrounding environment—was not lost on Browning. This understanding is something he stresses in the Design District, where the tree canopy provides shade and a sense of luxury and permanence that complements the collection of premium brand stores such as Giorgio Armani, Bulgari, Cartier, Prada, Tiffany & Co., Valentino and Versace. “Landscape has an inherent value through luxury and an aesthetic appeal that makes it appear as if the space is old and people have been coming there for a long time,” he says. “People will feel more comfortable through shade and ambiance.” Trees are all the more important because the Design District is a land-locked property. “We’re in an urban area,” Browning says. “It should be as lush as possible.” His overriding philosophy is simple: “Everywhere we can plant a tree,” he says, “we should plant a tree.”
An avid surfer, Nathan Browning's love of nature is manifested in each of his landscape architecture projects.

T
he fashion history of Miami Beach was built on light, and on a splendid sun-drenched afternoon, a local institution—the home of photographer Greg Lotus—is redolent with evocative settings. Just past the front gate, Lotus points out a giant agave plant, the backdrop for a Glamour magazine spread. Standing beside his backyard pool, Lotus takes in a waterfall cascading down a keystone wall. He shot Eva Longoria here, draped over the edge of the pool. Many stars have passed this way, including Channing Tatum in his emergent period. “Channing was just a model then, a nobody,” Lotus recalls, “but about to be a very big somebody.” In the front yard, hedges cover the walls and surround the window frames, as if the windows are being focused through a camera lens. Lotus’ home—a camera-ready palette of green ficus, white walls and burgundy bougainvillea—is the result of a stroke of luck. “Seventeen years ago, I was riding my bike past this house just as the owner was walking out of her front door with a ‘for sale’ sign,” he says. Lotus was raised in the small town of Elkins, West Virginia, a long way from the heady atmosphere of fashion. “Elkins is all farmers and coal miners,” he says. “I didn’t want to stay there.” After a brief interlude at West Virginia University in Morgantown, he worked as a waiter in Washington, D.C., before moving to New York. “I started out in photography doing test shots for my friends who were models, things for their portfolios. Then in the early 1990s, I moved down here and began shooting professionally.” On a trip to Paris, happenstance went his way once again. “I ran into Kate Moss’ agent, and she introduced me to the late Franca Sozzani, who was editor of Italian Vogue at the time,” he says. “After that, my career took off internationally.” The early 1990s were the heyday of Miami’s fashion industry, and Lotus—who also maintains a home in New York City—has remained an integral figure in the 40 ONE LIFE
Miami scene, shooting Russian Vogue spreads on Key Biscayne and Vogue swimsuit layouts on South Beach. He has photographed more than 80 international Vogue covers, as well as covers for Vanity Fair, GQ and more. Lotus has also shot campaigns for brands such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels and has lately moved into directing, shooting commercials and doing print work for clients such as Estée Lauder. Lotus travels constantly for work. In his living room, he surveys some of the treasures gleaned from the glossy whirl. “I found that bentwood chair at a flea market—the furniture maker now has pieces at the Museum of Modern Art,” he says. “I think the wannabe Modigliani painting on that wall came from a thrift store. The artist Kevin Cherry made the sofa and chair for me. I found the Italian marble table at an antique store in Los Angeles—the Oscars would rent it every year to hold statuettes backstage.” Light and the interplay of shadow is an aesthetic preoccupation for Lotus, and his new book, Shadow & Light—out this winter from Gatehouse Publishing— explores his fascination with the nuances of shadows. In the living room, Lotus displays one of his Russian Vogue photographs in which a model strides across a beamed parking garage with no roof, light dappling on the floor. Then, Lotus takes out his iPhone and looks at one of his photographs from Italian Vogue. In the image, the model’s face is accented by delicate shadow lines cast by a tennis net. “I found this model in a Subway making sandwiches,” he says, “and three weeks later, she was modeling for Italian Vogue. Isn’t she beautiful? I love the shadows on her face.” The bedroom contains his famous photograph Wagon Wheel. In the image, the shadow cast by a wagon wheel plays over a nude model. The photograph was originally done for 10 Magazine and is now one of the pieces Lotus sells on his website. In Cleveland, The Marble Room—a restaurant set in an old bank building—displays a huge
print of Wagon Wheel on one wall, along with other work by Lotus. Lotus’ home tour next leads to the guest room, which is adorned with two classic Bert Stern photographs from Marilyn Monroe’s “The Last Sitting” in 1962. In one image, a fragile-looking Monroe models a black Dior dress. In another shot, she’s virtually topless, barely covered in a gauzy scarf. Beyond anything else, fashion is simply fun, and even after a long list of celebrity subjects—Penelope Cruz, Katy Perry, Liam Hemsworth, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Kardashian, Elizabeth Hurley, Chloe Sevigny—Lotus still enjoys the sheer pop pleasure of fashion. Settling by the pool with his iPhone, he flips through images and reminisces about his career. “Here’s an Essence cover with Lupita Nyong’o right after she got the Academy Award for ‘12 Years a Slave,’” he says. “I love this bright red lipstick on Monica Bellucci—that was for Citizen K—and this GQ cover with Jessica Alba looks great, with her blue bathing suit against that yellow surfboard.” Along the way, photography has led Lotus some interesting characters. In Montauk, New York, Paul Morrissey—who directed films for Andy Warhol—brought Lotus on a private tour of Warhol’s house. In Memphis, Tennessee, Lisa Marie Presley hired Lotus to shoot photos for her album “Storm & Grace,” closing down Graceland for a week. Lotus goes into his house and brings back one of his treasures, a copy of the magazine Egoiste. On the cover is a Richard Avedon photograph of Isabelle Adjani. “In Paris, I was photographing Isabelle for Citizen K, and on the way to the shoot, I ran across this copy of Egoiste in my favorite bookstore, this little place in the Marais,” Lotus says. “Avedon was really a wonderful photographer, and after my shoot with Isabelle, I had her sign the Egoiste cover. She wrote, ‘For Greg… Such a nice feeling… Peace and photography.’ That really meant something. Peace and photography is what it’s all about.”

hey say good things come to those who wait. If that’s the case, the art world has much to appreciate now that The Bass art museum has opened its doors following a two-and-a-half-year renovation. The Bass has been a mecca for cultural and curatorial ambition since opening in 1964 inside an art deco building. Now, after a $12 million renovation—which increased programmable space by nearly 50 percent within the existing footprint—the institution will host some of the area’s most exciting exhibits in its new space. “The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, and our programming has consistently presented exhibitions of established international contemporary art that reflect the spirit of our city,” says Silvia Karman Cubiñá, the museum’s executive director and chief curator. “The new space allows us even more opportunities to host larger scale exhibitions and connect with our community.” Up first are Swiss native Ugo Rondinone’s “good evening beautiful blue” (on display until February 19) and Cameroonian-born Pascale Marthine Tayou’s “Beautiful” exhibits (on display until April 2), which both debuted in conjunction 44 ONE LIFE
with the museum’s October 29 reopening. Rondinone is no stranger to The Bass, as his 42-foot-tall Miami Mountain work is permanently installed in Collins Park, on the corner of 21st Street and Collins Avenue. But his “good evening beautiful blue” exhibit is part of a multi-institution retrospective comprising works that span three decades. From poetic installations in public spaces to life-size drawings, Rondinone’s work balances on the edge of euphoria and depression—even featuring an installation of 45 life-size clown figures in the piece vocabulary of solitude (2014). Showcasing Tayou’s alchemy-like work, the artist’s “Beautiful” exhibition displays an organic and collaboratively formed presentation of pieces made in the last decade. Visitors will navigate between stacked Arabic pots—Colonnes Pascale (2012)—and encounter Tayou’s colorful Fresque de Craies (2015), a work constructed from hundreds of chalk pieces arranged beneath West African colon tourist figures, gold foil and plastic eggs. Tayou, whose practice spans media and subject matter, is known for fluidly transforming the viewer’s understanding of materials, objects and narratives. “Beautiful” looks to be no different.

FEMALE POWER BROKERS ONE Sotheby’s International Realty’s female agents are true 21st century pioneers who bring unparalleled leadership, experience and social activism to the table. Here, we celebrate their trailblazing work.

ultured. Educated. Savvy. Those are just some of the adjectives used to describe the female brokers of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty. For Mayi de la Vega, being part of the ONE Sotheby’s International Realty family is about more than working at a real estate firm; it’s about becoming part of a global brand that’s synonymous with professionalism, purpose and poise. Under de la Vega’s leadership, ONE Sotheby’s International Realty has grown to include agents who represent some of the most exclusive properties throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties while offering real estate expertise and counsel accumulated through their vast travels and interactions with some of the world’s thought leaders. The women featured in this story are staunch supporters of the vision of One Life magazine; they have embraced the idea that design, architecture and the arts can and should be a part of everyday life. No one appreciates a sharp agent—male or female—more than de la Vega, who founded the firm in 2008. With nearly 30 years of real estate wisdom, de la Vega has seen how the South Florida market transformed from a small beach town for vacationers into the international hub it is today. Understanding the power of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty, de la Vega has expanded the firm to 750 real estate associates in 14 offices across South Florida to help customers through the process of buying or selling their homes. “In my opinion, we are led by one of the strongest and most influential women in?real estate,” says Broker-Vice President Sandra Tagliamonte. After all, de la Vega understands that real estate agents are also ambassadors of the community. Passionate about social activism, de la Vega sits on the board of CIFO and is a member of United Way’s esteemed Tocqueville Society. Additionally, she is a “Guardian Angel” of the Jackson Health Foundation. Avid supporters of the arts, de la Vega and her son, Daniel, the firm’s president, have also made ONE Sotheby’s International Realty the official real estate partner of the National YoungArts Foundation. The partnership has already proved fruitful, with the firm curating a custom collection of student artwork that is currently displayed at ONE Sotheby’s Miami Beach office. “As a female Realtor at ONE Sotheby’s International Realty, you are not just a powerhouse; you are part of a highly ethical, caring, supportive power family that recognizes women’s talents and potential, and provides them with the tools to achieve their best,” says Alexandra Peters-Rutten, a senior global real estate advisor. ONE Sotheby’s International Realty global reach is unmatched. The direct 46 ONE LIFE
affiliation with Sotheby’s and Sotheby’s International Realty offers the company unparalleled exposure—an attribute sellers reap the full benefit of as their homes receive prime visibility in a network of more than 20,000 associates in more than 65 countries and territories. “No other company in the world has the marketing power, customer service, reach and drive,” says Lana Bell, a luxury real estate broker who in 2015 and 2016 became the No. 1 sales agent in Miami-Dade and Broward counties out of more than 47,000 agents. Real estate agent Anna Sherrill echoes Bell’s statement. “No other company I have worked with has the global name recognition that ONE Sotheby’s International Realty has,” Sherrill says. “You also find a standard of excellence wherever you go.” Real estate associate Inga Boutboul, who works with high-end European and American clients, agrees. “I’m so happy to be part of such a worldwide brand for over five years,” she says. The company’s worldwide name recognition and respect in the industry is one reason Diane Lieberman elected to sell her South Beach International Realty to ONE Sotheby’s International Realty and de la Vega in 2015. “When I thought about selling my company, I knew my biggest assets were my agents,” Lieberman says. “I was courted by multiple companies. However, I chose ONE Sotheby’s International Realty because I wanted to bring my agents to the only global company in South Florida—one that represents the wealthiest buyers and sellers and one whose card my agents would be proud to carry.” Susan Gale, executive director of commercial and luxury specialty properties, agrees. “I am the perfect fit for ONE Sotheby’s International Realty because it aligns with my affluent and sophisticated VIP clientele,” she says. “They all know the brand.” ONE Sotheby’s International Realty also extends state-of-the-art tools to its agents, including skills that translate to its global customers. “ONE Sotheby’s International Realty is constantly advancing in offering tools for new technology and in offering networking venues with Sotheby’s offices around the country,” says Joelle Oiknine, a senior global real estate advisor. Perhaps de la Vega says it best when speaking of the high-quality female brokers associated with ONE Sotheby’s. “These women are part of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty because they are the ultimate professionals,” she says. “They are super-moms, smart, well-traveled, savvy, cultured and, most importantly, they share my vision and desire to support all our efforts.”

Nargis and Nasir Kassamali have combined philanthropy with high-end design in their “Love” series. 54 ONE LIFE
EVERLASTING LOVE Luminaire co-founders Nasir and Nargis Kassamali are designing a unique cure for cancer.
BY JENNIFER ARELLANO
W
hen Nargis Kassamali was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 37, her first instinct was to crawl underneath the blankets. “That’s it, I’m gone,” she thought. After that, an even stronger thought took hold—at the time, she and her husband, Nasir, had two sons in elementary school. “When you have young children, you fight for everything,” she says. The cancer returned four more times, until Nargis had a mastectomy a decade ago. Today, she’s in good health—“better than me,” says her husband with a laugh. “She’s a tough cookie.” Nargis’ harrowing experience inspired the couple to raise funds for cancer research through a medium they know well: design auctions. The Kassamalis founded renowned Miami-based design retailer Luminaire 43 years ago and have since devoted their lives to good design, paving the way for international furnishings to be directly available to American consumers and fostering design education through a local lecture series with art-world superstars such as Philippe Starck and Massimo and Lella Vignelli. Aside from becoming the focus of their professional lives, design is what first brought the couple together. The Kassamalis, who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this summer, met at the University of Nairobi, where Nasir was beginning her studies in commerce and Nasir was finishing his electrical engineering degree. “I had my eye on him before he even looked at me,” Nargis says. They discovered a shared love of Danish design and went to Denmark as exchange students in 1970. Later, when they were deciding on a philanthropy to support, the Kassamalis chose the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to receive all proceeds from their fundraising efforts. But first, they needed to convince the medical school’s dean (who is now a dear friend) that design auctions could raise enough money to fund cancer research. Nasir remembers the first time the university staff met him. “I was dressed all in black and Nargis was wearing Yohji Yamamoto, and they looked at us like we were from another planet,” he says. The dean and his staff were accustomed to the idea that fundraisers meant hotel galas and expensive lottery tickets. “We were talking about doing something radically different,” Nasir says. Though the doctors were skeptical, the Kassamalis were determined. In 2006, Nargis and Nasir launched the “Love” series to bring their fundraising vision to fruition through events involving public art exhibitions and auctions. The first
event in the series, called “PuppyLove,” was inspired by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio’s plastic puppy figures. Thirty-six designers and architects submitted their interpretations of Aarnio’s puppies for a live auction, fetching more than $450,000 for cancer research. Three more auctions followed, each with their own theme. In 2008, “PaperLove” spotlighted Asian architecture and design. “Paper is such an irreverent material in the West. In Tokyo, you can find a whole store that sells paper,” Nasir says. This second edition of the series exhibited during Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami, attracting two Issey Miyake pieces, a Zaha Hadid visual drawing and Massimo Vignelli’s original rendering for the New York City subway. The third edition, “DesignLove,” was held in 2011 and produced in collaboration with French design magazine Intramuros, which donated more than 90 original DuPont Corian pieces that were exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and at one of Luminaire’s showrooms in Miami, Luminaire Lab. The most recent series, “GlasLove,” was held during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2016. “Glass is characterized by the duality of its strong yet fragile nature. Poetically and metaphorically, glass reflects the spirit of those battling cancer,” reads Luminaire’s auction page for the event. Though Hurricane Matthew thwarted the Kassamalis’ plans to exhibit 40 glass works in the Miami Design District, the couple instead held an online auction. Several pieces are still available at luminaire.com/glaslove. So far, the “Love” series has raised more than $1 million for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. For their fifth edition, the Kassamalis want to go bigger and bolder. Nasir is keeping mum on the next materials theme but says the couple plans to make the initial exhibition a traveling one. The Kassamalis are grateful for the enormous response and support they’ve received from the international design community; Nasir is especially touched by the designers who’ve donated pieces. “When a young designer looks at these pieces, they’re [practically] given a year’s worth of visual training. When you buy something, you also get the thought process with it, which is priceless,” he says. “That’s the whole thing about dreaming—We are human and we have the capacity to dream, but very few of us are able to express it.” ONE LIFE 55
THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK On the heels of opening its new building in the Miami Design District, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami—along with its director, Ellen Salpeter— focuses on how it can be a resource for the community.
BY ROB GOYANES
F
or Ellen Salpeter, it was a bit of a revelation to see Miami’s hunger for art and discourse. “Every time we host a program, such as a lecture or an artist talk, we are at capacity,” says Salpeter, who has served as director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami since 2015. “It surprised me that there’s this real appetite for learning more and having more… I didn’t know it was quite as intense as it is.” The ICA, which was temporarily headquartered in the Design District’s Moore Building, is in the final phases of constructing a new building that is double the size of its former location, with nearly 20,000 square feet of adjustable gallery spaces across three floors. Salpeter, a veteran of overseeing large cultural organizations, is anticipating the December 1 opening. As a native of Queens, New York, Salpeter grew up in a place where art has a long history and well-established infrastructure. Instead of a single moment where the power of art struck, she believes it was prolonged exposure that led to her passion. “Big days were going into the city to visit the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History,” she says. 56 ONE LIFE
Her childhood home contained art, too—mostly reproductions, and later some original works. Her parents were particularly interested in sound sculpture by Harry Bertoia and works by Alex Katz and Morris Louis. “I think they were fascinated by modernity,” she says. This fascination spurred Salpeter’s career as an arts administrator and leader. After graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in business management, she moved to France. “It was a very fertile moment in Paris in the ’80s,” she says. There, she was exposed to local, continental and international art scenes. “When I moved back to the States, I worked in commercial art management and licensing and was really interested in reproducibility and accessibility in the arts,” she says. Salpeter started a small publishing company called Permanent Press, where she oversaw projects from the likes of poet Kenneth Goldsmith and vocalist and composer Joan La Barbara. From 1994 to 2001, she was executive director of Thread Waxing Space, an experimental, multidisciplinary arts nonprofit in SoHo. Following that she founded Heart of Brooklyn, which focused on community engagement among
ICA Miami director Ellen Salpeter.

cultural institutions, a skill she would bring with her to Miami. While in New York, she also helped overhaul a 109-year-old institution as deputy director of external affairs at the Jewish Museum. “It was about dusting it off and taking what made it such a great institution and building on that,” she says. “I spent a lot of time thinking about how art can impact everyday lives, and how a culturally specific institution can be relevant to a broader audience.” Now, at the helm of a relatively fresh contemporary art museum, Salpeter is thinking about how the institution can continue to be a resource for the Miami community beyond the rank-and-file art world. Besides offering free admission and family activities, the ICA works “across the social services spectrum to bring arts education into people’s lives and use it as a tool to build self-esteem,” Salpeter says. The museum’s efforts include working with children of incarcerated families through a partnership with a juvenile justice program. 58 ONE LIFE
The museum’s new building, designed by Spanish firm Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos, will provide expanded opportunities for such engagement. The new building’s first major survey—titled “The Everywhere Studio” and takes up the second- and third-floor galleries—will showcase works by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Bruce Nauman, Carolee Schneemann and Matthew Barney. “With the expansion and new building, we will be able to connect the art of the post-war to the contemporary and provide a bit of arts history to the community,” Salpeter says. The new space will also house six large-scale commissions and a sculpture garden. Still, even with an established collection and patronage, difficulties inevitably remain. “The challenge in any organization, but particularly with a new museum, is awareness,” Salpeter says. Given her track record, however, she seems more than ready for the work at hand. “It’s an ongoing challenge, she says, “but also an opportunity.”

THE SANDS OF TIME Oman has risen to become a luxurious oasis in the Middle East.

Luxury awaits those traveling to Muscat. The award-winning Chedi Muscat combines Asian, zen-like stylings with Arab grace and white Moorish architecture.

ith sprawling sand dunes as soft as silk and multicolored mosques glittering in the sunlight, Oman’s allure lies in its simplicity. There’s no grandstanding in Oman: The only things this small country boasts are a welcoming society, spectacular mountainside towns and one of the richest cultures in the world, thanks in part to influences from Africa and India. Spanning more than 110,000 square miles (almost double the size of Florida), Oman packs a pretty punch in its varied landscapes, from expansive desert horizons to picturesque seaside towns and sawtooth mountain ranges. Muscat With white buildings flanked against dramatic mountains, blue, purple and gold towers sparkling in the sun, and a manicured walkway that sits beside warm Gulf of Oman waters, Muscat is about as beautiful as any Arabian city can be. While a newer portion of town is home to modern apartment towers, recently built mosques and commercial buildings, Muscat lacks the oversaturation of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, giving it the depth, soul and culture often lacking in the United Arab Emirates. 64 ONE LIFE
Although you could easily spend hours navigating the famous Muscat Souq, also known as the Mutrah Souq—a winding maze of antique shops, spice stands, scarf sellers and the like—there’s more to entice in this bustling port city. The highlight of any trip to Muscat (which means “safe anchorage” in Arabic) is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which was built to honor the sultan’s 30th year of reign and can house up to 20,000 worshippers. Unassuming on the outside with just a few ornate details carved into the 300,000 tons of sandstone, the mosque dazzles from the inside, notably with a 230-foot-by-197-foot Persian rug that greets visitors. The rug, which was weaved by 600 women, is the second largest in the world. To mingle with locals in Muscat, visit the Mutrah Fish Market, which sits in the old commercial center of the city. Starting at sunrise, fishers can be seen returning with their loot on wooden dhows and stocking the stalls with their catches, including tuna, octopus and kingfish. A few steps from the market is the Mutrah Corniche, also referred to as the Muscat Corniche, a winding seaside sidewalk decorated with palm trees and small gazebos that offers a breathtaking view.

Wahiba Sands Much of Oman is made up of desert, but that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the Wahiba Sands, or A’Sharqiyah Sands. The dunes of this vast landscape tower more than 600 feet above the ground and are composed of multicolored sands as soft as silk. The pattern of the dunes—like small ripples of waves—is caused by the wind and makes for astonishing photos that are best described as otherworldly. The dunes are accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles, and you can opt to go for a daytrip or an overnight stay—the latter of which is highly recommended. Without any light pollution for miles, the stars and the Milky Way will sparkle as you lie atop the plush sand and gaze up. Beyond stargazing, activities include dune safaris (which can be a mix of nausea-inducing adrenaline and fear), camel rides and sandboarding. Musandam Peninsula The Musandam Peninsula, often called the Norway of Arabia, is a collection of staggering fjords bound by the UAE and the Strait of Hormuz. It’s an inspiring blend of sandy desert, aqua water, palm trees and towering inlets. Go sailing on a dhow, a traditional long wooden-hulled boat that was once used solely as a merchandising vessel. Now, the boats are used as mock cruise boats and transport people through the majestic landscape during daytrips to Khasab. Beyond the fjords, the forts of Khasab and Dibba, which date back to the 17th century, beckon as they showcase a look into the height of the Portuguese naval presence. The Empty Quarter With a name as ominous as a horror movie, the Empty Quarter is a place you wouldn’t want to get lost in. Spread among Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the UAE, the Empty Quarter, or Rub Al Khali, is the largest sand sea, or erg, in the world, stretching more than 225,000 square miles. A world of harsh extremes—from bitter cold temperatures at night to crippling heat in the afternoon and vast dunes that both welcome and haunt—the desert is one of the least explored geographic landscapes in the region. Although the heat and dramatic dunes make it nearly impossible for anyone to live there, the dozen tribes of Bedouin have settled and survived along the corridors of the Empty Quarter for decades. If you do venture here, go with a tour guide and bring a drone to capture the beautiful movement of the dunes, which weave in a parallel fashion thanks to the wind. 66 ONE LIFE
Spanning more than 110,000 square miles, Oman packs a pretty punch in its varied landscapes, from expansive desert horizons to picturesque seaside towns and sawtooth mountain ranges.
The Chedi Muscat looks out toward the Arabian Sea, making it one of the few luxury beachside resorts in Oman.
