Beauty Classic

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author Edith Wharton once stated, “A classic is classic not because it conforms to certain structural rules, or fits certain definitions. . . . It is classic because of a certain eternal and irrepressible freshness.” While Wharton may have been referring to literature when she wrote those words, her point is equally apt in interior design, fine cuisine, clothing, art, even sports. And many of the stories in this issue of ONE Life magazine highlight the sense of excitement and satisfaction that true classic beauty—in whatever form it takes—naturally evokes in culture lovers, epicures, athletes, and everyday globetrotters alike. Our profile on the jaw-dropping Amanemu resort in Japan offers a case in point. The latest in Aman’s group of luxury resorts and hotels, this exquisite resort spa offers guests an inspired mix of rejuvenating vistas, activities, and treatments, including a modern variation on onsen, the ancient Japanese ritual of bathing in the mineral-rich, steaming waters of geothermal springs. Like everything the Japanese do, the process is elevated to an art form here. Our tour through some of the best restaurants in Paris serves up an equally compelling yet completely different lens through which to appreciate fresh takes on age-old approaches to savoring the good things in life. Here, four young chefs are spearheading a culinary comeback of la cuisine bourgeoise, the classic French cuisine characterized by rich sauces and elaborate cooking techniques popularized in America 55 years ago by Julia Child. At these Parisian restaurants, luscious variations on throwbacks— such as salmon with béarnaise sauce or filet mignon with bordelaise sauce—are offered up alongside contemporary dishes. You’ll find other creative spins on world-class artistry in our coverage of tastemakers far and wide. In London, for example, we take you inside aristocrat Robin Birley’s fantastical exclusive private club Loulou’s—the “it” spot in Mayfair for new sophisticates with a waiting list in the thousands. We also offer a look at the architecture of Rio de Janeiro, the setting for this summer’s Olympic Games and a bastion of some of the best modern design on the planet. Plus, we showcase a portfolio of properties in and around my own hometown of Miami, including a Versailles-inspired manse by the sea; the soaring new amenity-rich Turnberry Ocean Club Residences in Sunny Isles; and Boulevard 57, a mixed-use complex that offers a new take on the playful postwar MiMo style. And finally, we remember Zaha Hadid, whom we at ONE Sotheby’s International Realty had the privilege of knowing and whom we continue to honor as we represent her ongoing legacy and parting gift to the city of Miami, One Thousand Museum—a tour de force and one of the last structures by the master architect.

HOT HAPPENINGS IN THE WORLD OF ART AND DESIGN

Solo

Devoted to sparking a heightened awareness of everyday life, New York–based Michele Oka Doner creates art that fills utilitarian necessities, bringing significance and grace to common human rituals. From her public art installation at Miami International Airport, where she transformed a concourse floor into an indoor beach (A Walk on the Beach), to her renowned bronze chandelier sculptures found in Tiffany & Co., to her recent stint designing costumes for the Miami City Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oka Doner is a rare breed of artist, difficult to categorize and moving successfully between formats. Appreciators of the artist won’t want to miss her new solo exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, “Michele Oka Doner: How I Caught a Swallow in Mid-Air,” a survey spanning the arc of her career that will run through September 11. “There has been a philosophic underpinning to my work,” says Oka Doner, who has also been commissioned create artwork for Louver House, the 12-unit luxury residence in Miami’s South of Fifth neighbor

hood being sold exclusively by ONE Sotheby’s International Realty. “The fact that the works take different forms, but they all relate.” The title piece of the show is one of the first images Oka Doner ever created, back in 1964—and yes, she really did “catch a swallow,” albeit with her camera. The beautifully eerie moment captured on film embodies Oka Doner’s approach to art. “Chance is a major theme in all of my work,” she says. “I caught that image and put it away, and years later I discovered it and it was such a nice surprise. I loved the poetic nature of just capturing the moment, and that’s really what that piece means.” —Jane Moore

JOY RIDE

You have the dream house and the amazing artwork hanging on the walls, but what’s in your driveway? Now Sotheby’s can help with that too. With a long history of bringing the very finest to consumers, Sotheby’s has expanded its reach through a partnership with RM Auctions, the world’s foremost auctioneer of collector cars. Last year, RM Sotheby’s secured 15 of the 25 most valuable automotive auction sales globally, including a 1956 Scaglietti Ferrari 290 MM built for Argentine racecar driver Juan Manuel Fangio that sold in December for $28.05 million, ranking it as the top automotive auction sale of 2015. Also in December, Janis Joplin’s

psychedelic 1964 Porsche 356 went for $1.76 million. “The partnership that has been formed between RM Auctions and Sotheby’s is undoubtedly the most effective way for us to reach the ever-growing, worldwide audience of collector cars,” says Rob Myers, chairman and founder of RM Auctions. Upcoming RM Sotheby’s auctions include events in Plymouth, Michigan July 30; Monterey, California August 19–20; and London in September. —J.M.

Ontario transit-planning agency Metrolinx recently launched Toronto’s Union Pearson Express (UP Express), a $456 million high-speed commuter train that takes riders between downtown Toronto’s Union Station and Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport, with stops at Bloor and Weston stations. In an effort to create something fresh and stylish, Metrolinx turned to Canadian ex-pat Tyler Brûlé. Founder of the magazines Wallpaper and Monocle, Brûlé now heads the design firm Winkreative, best known for designing elegant, comfortable furnishings for British Airways’ Club World re-launch in 2006.

For the UP Express project, Brûlé took inspiration from the landscape, incorporating colors of Ontario’s natural world— shades of sage green and burnt orange—into the train’s design. The 1940s-style uniforms, designed by Matt Robinson of Klaxon Howl, mimic these colors and are emblazoned with pine trees and Ontario’s trillium flower. The stations are also thoughtful and fun, with touches that include faux-oak ceiling slats, intended to mimic the experience of walking through a Canadian forest. The entire experience is intended to encapsulate the best of artisanal Canada: Union Station, for instance, houses an outpost of Balzac’s Coffee Roasters, the Ontario-based chain named after nineteenth century novelist and coffee lover Honoré de Balzac. Passengers can also browse for fun collectables at an outpost of the Drake General Store, a Canadian chain known for such clever selections as the O Canada Music Box. By the end of the brief journey, the UP Express provides a smart and highly curated snapshot of Canada. upexpress.com —Tom Austin 18

MUSEUM BOOM

NEW YORK The big design story this spring is, of course, the Met Breuer. The beautiful, Marcel Breuer– designed building at Madison and 75th is now home to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s modern and contemporary collections. The Met is flexing its design muscles in other ways as well: At the main museum building on Fifth Avenue, architect David Chipperfield—the man behind Mexico City’s Museo Jumex—has been picked to create a new design for the Southwest Wing, which will also house modern and contemporary works. metmuseum.org

IWAN BAAN

BERKELEY, CA Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the new 83,000-square-foot home of The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive opened in January. Merging the former 1930s UC Berkeley printing plant with new structures that include two indoor theaters and an exterior LED screen for outdoor viewings, the museum is a study in the art of repurposing. The original saw-tooth roof of the printing plant provides natural light, while a kind of architectural spine runs the length of the building, from a cantilevered café on one end to an indoor theater on the other. The theater space comments on the original 1930s Art Deco style, implementing contemporary ruled surfaces and stainless steel, while Canary Island pine from the old building was used to build seating in the performance area. The opening exhibition, “Architecture of Life” (through May 29), explores how architecture sheds light on the human experience. Says BAMPFA Director Lawrence Rinder: “Our new downtown Berkeley home gives a tremendous boost to our mission to inspire the imagination and ignite critical dialogue through art and film.” bampfa.berkeley.edu

The United States is in the midst of a museum boom, with new openings—and makeovers of existing institutions—happening from coast to coast.

LOS ANGELES Adding to the city’s already-solid museum cache that includes the MoCA, LACMA, the Hammer Museum at UCLA, and the Huntington Museum, the new Broad Museum has opened its doors in L.A. Founded by collectors Eli and Edythe Broad, the 120,000-square-foot space houses more than 2,000 works of contemporary art. Designed by New York–based Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, the museum has two floors of exhibition space. The architectural conceit is the “veil and the vault,” intended to unite the exhibition and storage areas of the collection. The “vault,” or collection storage space, is essential to the aesthetic experience; the windowed walls of the vault allow visitors glimpses of the stored collection. Both the vault and gallery spaces are wrapped in an architectural “veil,” a honeycombstyle structure that filters natural daylight. Says Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad: “Engaging and enlivening pedestrian life along Grand Avenue has been a longtime goal for the Broads, and DS+R’s design spoke to that dynamic in a very practical yet poetic way.” thebroad.org

MIAMI In late 2016, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science), designed by Grimshaw Architects, will open in Miami’s Museum Park. Known for the acclaimed Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) in New York, as well as the AIA National Honor Award-winning Museo del Acero in Mexico, Grimshaw has created four singular and interconnected buildings (the Living Core Aquarium, Exploration Center, Frost Planetarium, and Innovation Center) for the museum. The indoor/outdoor Living Core Aquarium echoes the Gulf Stream and entails some 500,000 gallons of salt water. The stunning aquarium will house a permanent interactive exhibit called “The River of Grass,” which explores the natural world of the Everglades. For Gillian Thomas, president and CEO of the Frost, the museum is all about inspiration. “The museum and its science exhibits will inspire many generations to come, encouraging them to appreciate the immense impact that science and technology have on every aspect of our world,” she says. frostscience.org —T.A. 20

REVOLUTION

With the refurbishment of its famous chimneys complete and the first phase of a grand plan to redevelop its surroundings opening this year, the Battersea Power Station in London is garnering a fresh burst of attention not seen since the Art Deco building appeared on the cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals album almost 40 years ago. After several failed attempts to improve the abandoned industrial site on the South Bank of the Thames, a Malaysian-backed development consortium kick-started a new vision for the riverside terrain with a master plan by Uruguayan visionary Rafael Viñoly that aims to push London’s staid urban fabric into a bold new era. “The idea was precisely to create a setting for the Power Station—not with towers but with a series of long, articulated laminar buildings—to frame it and create recognizable urban spaces that would be unique in shape and scale to the traditional medieval or Victorian texture of the city,” says Viñoly.

The Gehry-designed luxury residential tower at Battersea, dubbed the Flower (above); a rooftop swimming pool with extraordinary views (below left)

rooftop garden stretching almost a quarter mile in length and offering breathtaking views of the Power Station and the city beyond. The first phase of the project, Circus West, is scheduled to launch this summer. Designed by London-based firms SimpsonHaugh and Partners and de Rijke Marsh Morgan, the two buildings comprise offices, shops, and leisure and hospitality spaces as well as a mix of residential units offering incredible views of the city’s iconic skyline. Overlooking the Thames, the residential building provides amenities like private dining rooms, the Resident’s Bar, a gym, a swimming pool, a library, and a cinema. Linley—the firm of Viscount David Linley, the bespoke furniture maker and nephew of the Queen—designed the interiors, referencing aspects of the original Art Deco structure in the triple-height lobby staircase and the luxe materials and detailing of fixtures and fittings in the kitchens and baths. When completed in its totality in 2025, the Battersea development promises to link London’s rich heritage to a bright future. French Twist The new Hermès boutique in Miami’s Design District combines Parisian flair and a little South Florida flavor.

When French designer Hermès decided to open a boutique in Miami’s Design District, the paradoxical setting of urban and tropical— and the city’s reputation as the world’s playground for new ideas—inspired the design. The modern, 13,000-square-foot, threestory building incorporates the concepts of nature and vibration, movement and shadow, marrying stone, wood, and metal topped with a tree-filled rooftop garden. The space exhibits playful geometric shadows from every imaginable angle. “It was about how to create protection from the sun, while also playing with movement,” explains architect Denis Montel of Parisbased RDAI. “We almost wanted to create an installation instead of just a building.” Montel says for this location (only the third in the States, after Manhattan and Beverly Hills), he was focused on creating a boutique where visitors could have a “true experience.” An open-air courtyard surrounds a tropical Guiana chestnut tree ringed with a bench for quiet contemplation. “You really feel like you’re coming into a beautiful home,” says Robert Chavez, president and CEO of Hermès USA. “We don’t rubber-stamp our boutiques anywhere in the world, and what was designed for Miami really fits right into the local culture, the local community. It has a lightness and fluidity to it that is both beautiful and very fitting for the city.” 24

Behind the cobblestone courtyard is a dedicated entrance to Cristalleries de Saint-Louis, Hermès’ sister store filled with a full range of crystal tableware, barware, lighting, decorative pieces, and collectibles, all hand-blown by some of the world’s most talented designers. The second floor is home to silk and scarves—like the new commemorative Flamingo Party scarf, created in honor of the Miami opening. The third floor houses womenswear and equestrian offerings. The boutique, which opened in November, has plans to integrate artwork and other features that will carry this location beyond a mere shopping experience—and seamlessly meld the Hermès brand into the Miami lifestyle. “Miami is in many ways at the crossroads of the world,” says Chavez. “The light, color, and brio of this dynamic city are what make it irresistible to so many, Hermès among them.” ◗ 162 NE 39th Street, Miami, 305.868.0118, hermes.com.

BOULEVARD OF DREAMS A look at the spectacular new residential community in the city’s charming MiMo district: Boulevard 57

There is a prime stretch of Biscayne Boulevard between NE 57th and NE 58th Streets that is infused with the whimsy of the surrounding Miami Modernism architecture. This area of the MiMo/Biscayne Boulevard Historic District, as it’s called, is rich with possibility. It is here that Unitas Devlopment Group decided to build a brand-new mixed-use project, Boulevard 57. “We’re at the center of the culinary arts, close to 55th Street Station, a block of great shops and restaurants pioneered by Mark Soyka years ago,” Unitas COO Hector Torres says of the location. “The historic homes of the Upper East Side all around us make this area a truly residential community with a wholly different culture than Miami Beach or Brickell Avenue. It’s more family-oriented and much less congested.” Unitas Development Group is an emerging real estate group whose name is derived from the collaborative mind-set used to achieve major global success through an innovative, sustainable, and precisionbased approach to revitalizing areas. For this project, the team was inspired by the low-scale charm of the MiMo district (which extends from 50th to 77th Street) and looked to Sieger Suarez Architects to 26

design a building that fits perfectly into its surroundings. “We wanted to integrate the post-war themes of the surrounding MiMo architecture—the glamour, the fun, and the sheer stylishness—into the design of Boulevard 57,” says Torres. The result is an eight-story tower with 105 residential units and 45,000 square feet of retail space that, when completed in summer 2018, Torres says will be a “central gathering point for the neighborhood, a mini-community that hasn’t existed before in this area.” The ground-floor space will house sophisticated tenants like juice bars, cafés, innovative boutiques, organic grocery stores, and an ecofriendly dry cleaner, says Torres. “It will be a place where you can bring a baby carriage or just meet friends, a true community with a focus on health and wellness.” The private, one- to four-bedroom residences are intended to be “singlefamily homes in the sky.” Up to 4,700 square feet in size, many units have private elevators that open to the unit’s foyer. Ten- to 12-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows create an airy, open feeling and offer unobstructed views, while some boast 500-square-foot terraces. “MiMo is post-war Modernism, but a playful kind of Modernism,” says Charles Sieger of his design inspiration. “There is very much a playfulness at Boulevard 57, with sweeping lines and rounded corners.”

Sieger worked with several other designers on the project, including Juan Poggi and Michael Wolk. “Michael’s genre of furniture design fits well with the architecture we do,” he says. “His work really completes the public areas.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows open units to the outdoors (above); the pool deck (below) Opposite page: The ground floor offers upscale cafés, boutiques, and more (left); sweeping lines and rounded corners give Boulevard 57 a playful Modernist feel (right)

“We also use a lot of greenery in our work,” he adds. “William Eager, who heads the landscape design firm EGS2, has done wonderful work at Boulevard 57 with green walls and a beautiful tropical environment around the pool deck. There is a huge variety of plant coloration, and that vocabulary of color really complements the outdoor sculpture of Manolo Valdés.” Sieger is talking about the Spanish artist’s beautiful sculptures around the property. For Unitas, Valdes’ artwork is the icing on the grand cake. “Manolo’s work is tactile and tied into our concern for a feeling of wellness,” says Torres. “And he’s conscious of art history, as we’re conscious of the history of architecture, particularly the MiMo district.” For a project that is so inspired by the past, however, Boulevard 57 is ultimately about the future. Says Sieger: “The future is new urbanism, and at Boulevard 57, there are so many advantages in being able to pop downstairs and socialize with other people. I’m excited for Boulevard 57 to influence the character of the neighborhood—in a good way.” ◗ 5700 Biscayne Blvd., 786.953.8448, blvd57.com

FOODIE’S GUIDE TO PARIS A CLASSIC FRENCH STYLE OF COOKING IS MAKING A MOUTHWATERING COMEBACK IN THE CITY OF LIGHT.

Chef Rathgeber’s house cassoulet features duck confit, sausage, ribs, lamb, pork belly, and Mogette de Vendée beans

In Paris, la cuisine bourgeoise, the classic French cuisine Julia Child first popularized in the United States 55 years ago, is suddenly back in fashion. Characterized by rich sauces and elaborate cooking techniques, the cuisine is being resurrected—and revised—by a new generation of young chefs for whom Antonin Carême and Auguste Escoffier, the chefs who originally created la cuisine bourgeoise, are heroes. For years, the refined dishes were beloved by affluent, food-loving Gauls, who came to the table with no fear of butter and cream and avid appetites. But everything changed in the 1970s, when a new approach to cooking dubbed la nouvelle cuisine (“the new cooking”) took hold, championing simpler, shorter cooking times. Eventually, la cuisine bourgeoise began to disappear, as many of the Parisian restaurants specializing in the traditional cooking method closed their doors. Now, more than a generation later, la cuisine bourgeoise is back—with a host of talented chefs leading the revival. Here, a selection of the best places to sample la cuisine bourgeoise on your next visit to Paris. 28

L’ASSIETTE

Tucked away in Montparnasse on the Left Bank, this charming old-fashioned bistro is where former President Francois Mitterand used to indulge his famous appetites for both good food and female company. Chef David Rathgeber took it over in 2008 and quickly became one of the first chefs of his generation to express an interest in la cuisine bourgeoise. “I’ve always loved this style of cooking, but I do it in my own way,” he says. Rathgeber serves up a combination of contemporary classics like shrimp tartare and roasted hake with saffron-flavored shellfish risotto as well as la cuisine bourgeoise throwbacks including quenelle de merlan sauce Nantua (fluffy whiting dumplings in a crayfish sauce) and one of the most delectable cassoulets in the country. Don’t miss the profiteroles for dessert. 181 rue du Château, 14th Arrondissement, +33 01 43 22 64 86, restaurant-lassiette.com

PIERRE MONETTA

If you are searching for the picture-perfect Parisian bistro, enter this delightful century-old establishment with engraved glass windows, red velvet banquettes, and a distinctly French tiled floor. In 2005, the great Alain Ducasse took over the much-loved, former family-owned table in historic Les Marais and deftly modernized its selection of bourgeoise classics. “The main reason la cuisine bourgeoise became rare in restaurants is that it’s expensive and time-consuming to cook,” says Ducasse. “Buying Benoit was sort of an act of gastronomic preservation. I have a special affection for this cooking style.” Running the kitchen since 2015, Chef Fabienne Eymard oversees a menu that features rarely seen dishes like la langue de veau, a specialty of the northern French city of Valenciennes made from think layers of veal tongue and foie gras; salmon with béarnaise sauce; filet mignon with bordelaise sauce; and iced pistachio and passion fruit nougat. 20 rue Saint-Martin, 4th Arrondissement, +33 01 58 00 22 05, benoit-paris.com

Such is the reputation of Chef Bertrand Grébaut’s five-yearold Michelin-starred restaurant that everyone from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to Hollywood power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z have angled for one of the bare wooden tables. Located in an arty neighborhood in an off-the-beaten path part of eastern Paris, Septime’s decor is stunningly modern, with a loft-like dining room, factory lamps with Edison bulbs, and a cement floor. But much of the cuisine evokes a Paris of the past. The short menu, which changes regularly according to the seasons and the chef’s inspiration, features many dishes inspired by the canon of la cuisine bourgeoise, including his superb version of blanquette de veau (veal, mushrooms, and baby onions in a cream sauce). Grébaut’s trick is to marinate the mushrooms in vinegar before cooking. “A touch of acidity makes a great traditional dish like this modern,” he says. Other standout dishes to try include oeufs en meurette (coddled eggs in a red wine with shallots, bacon, and a garnish of croutons) and roasted endive with Beaufort cream and Bigorre black-pork lardo. Reservations (far in advance) are essential. 80 rue de Charonne, 11th Arrondissement, +33 01 43 67 38 29, septime-charonne.fr

LA BOURSE ET LA VIE Curiously enough, one of the chefs leading this French culinary comeback is an American. “I’ve always loved the profoundly satisfying and deeply comforting strata of la cuisine bourgeoise,” says Chef Daniel Rose, a Chicago native who has lived in Paris for 15 years. Rose just opened La Bourse et La Vie, a tiny bistro on the Right Bank. Inside, the intimate dining room—walls coated in battleship-gray paint, delicately restored mirrors and moldings, a charming frieze, and globe sconces designed by Italian designer Gina Sarfati—offers a warm atmosphere in which to enjoy Rose’s stellar cuisine. The menu evolves with the seasons and markets but regularly proposes such classics as artichoke hearts stuffed with foie gras, frog’s legs sautéed in garlic, and an elegant, modern version of pot au feu (beef cooked in bouillon with vegetables). Rose lists grilled sole in cider sauce and duck a l’orange among his favorite bourgeoise dishes but says he makes them a little bit differently. “My version of these dishes preserves their taste while making them lighter,” he says. The crème caramel here just might be the best in the French capital, and the short wine list is excellent. 12 rue Vivienne, 2nd Arrondissement, +33 01 42 60 08 83, labourselavie.com Mackerel filets in white wine

London Calling

STEP INSIDE ONE OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE NIGHTCLUBS IN THE WORLD: LOULOU’S.

On a relatively quiet side street in Mayfair’s Shepherd Market neighborhood, gaslight lamps cast deep shadows on old cobblestone. A mysterious heartbeat endures in this part of the city at night, evoking the aura of nineteenth-century London. It’s here, at 5 Hertford Street, that Robin Birley built one of the world’s most exclusive private clubs—the “it” spot for new sophisticates with a waiting list numbering in the thousands. Welcome to Loulou’s. Birley, an aristocrat of his own accord, is the son of Lady Annabel Goldsmith and Sir Mark Birley—and heir-apparent to his late father’s empire of London nightclubs, including Annabel’s, Mark’s Club, and Harry’s Bar. In 2012, he ventured into the family business on his own, sparing no expense to create Loulou’s and quickly proving that he, like his father before him, has a knack for attracting the attention of the elite. Membership here is coveted—and not to be messed with. With a waiting list a mile long, even Hollywood A-listers have no clout here: When Cameron Diaz’s manager tried to use a friend’s membership to gain access for his client, he came up empty. Miss Diaz, too, must get on the list.

Those who do gain access walk through an intimate hedge-lined garden and down a cobblestone pathway to approach the brick façade of 5 Hertford Street—a threestory, 23,000-square-foot space encompassing restaurants, bars, and lounges. Once inside, guests fall down a rabbit hole of elegance and decadence of the highest order, a luxurious yet quirky $43 million design on which Birley admits he will never see a return. Created by notable designer Rifat Özbek, the interior is a fantasy unlike anything in existence, a riot of colors, textures, and patterns, with an enormous stuffed giraffe welcoming guests to Loulous’ ever-changing safari. On paper, such a seemingly haphazard design concept could never work. Yet somehow it does, sensory overload and all.

From top: The ambience at 5 Hertford Street includes intimate lighting and whimsical decor like a giant stuffed giraffe; private dining at Loulou’s

violinist and the face of Dior. Past the voluminous dining rooms of Loulou’s are arched bungalows too rich and opulent to be called “booths.” The archways have a Barnum and Bailey–esque quality, while black and white movies of winter landscapes scroll on the back wall, casting an eerie and mysterious pall over dinner.

There is no place better—or quieter—to observe and gather intel than The Whiskey Bar, an essential first stop at the club before descending to dinner at Loulou’s (which is the name of the space downstairs). The Whiskey Bar has a British hunting lodge vibe, with light wood, stuffed pheasants perched on a woodsy incline, an Old World map hanging on the wall, and a smattering of antique wooden boomerangs. When Birley’s two blue whippets come bounding in, the bartender gives them each a bread stick, which they graciously accept. These hounds are above slobbering or pawing, although they will accept a cuddle and pat on the head if one insists. Downstairs in Loulou’s restaurant, the decibel level ensures privacy among tables. “It’s really too loud and too dark for anything significant to be discussed,” notes member Charlie Siem, the handsome virtuoso

Everyone here is handsomely dressed in the effortless devilmay-care style distinctive of London. Men are in jackets and pants; women in dresses, skirts, and elegant pantsuits. It’s all quite conservative for such a young, hip clientele. But then again, the look is just right for London society, which prides itself on understated elegance. Even fashion designer Zac Posen, who pops in with friends on this night, adheres to the code. Another code of conduct here that everyone is fully aware of: No photos. An errant mishap by a snap-happy guest can have the member banned from the club for life. It’s likely one of the reasons so many celebrities—including Sienna Miller, Victoria and David Beckham, Tom Ford, George Clooney, and Kate Moss—are members. That and the maze of passageways with hidden nooks and intimate alcoves that ensure privacy not easily found elsewhere. And with not a window or a clock in sight, the world inside Loulou’s becomes an escape, even for just a moment in time. ◗ ONELIFE

THE SOFFER FAMILY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING MUCH OF THE SOUTH FLORIDA WE KNOW TODAY. NEXT UP, JEFFREY SOFFER INTRODUCES HIS NEWEST PROJECT: TURNBERRY OCEAN CLUB RESIDENCES

Jeffrey Soffer was just 2 years old when his father moved the family from Pittsburgh to Miami. At the time, Sunny Isles Beach was filled with sleepy motels, and Aventura was nothing more than undeveloped land. But his father, Donald, had a vision for the northeast corner of Miami-Dade County. He purchased 785 acres of land and put his stamp on the area developing commercial successes like the Aventura Mall and Turnberry Isle Miami, in addition to countless luxury condominiums and office spaces. “The number-one lesson I learned from my father was never to be afraid and to take the leap of faith,” says 48-yearold Soffer, the man behind South Florida’s latest luxury-residence showstopper, Turnberry Ocean Club Residences in Sunny Isles Beach. For more than 25 years, Soffer has been leading the company his father built as cochairman of Turnberry Associates, alongside his sister, Jackie. Perhaps Turnberry’s most impressive project 42

Soffer’s latest endeavor, Turnberry Ocean Club Residences in Sunny Isles Beach, might just be his biggest undertaking yet. With this development, he hopes to carry on the company vision in what he considers to be a prime location. “Turnberry Associates is known for transforming parcels of land into iconic masterpieces,” he says. “Sunny Isles Beach, in my eyes, has always been the perfect two-mile stretch to for prestigious developments.” ONELIFE 43

public spaces), as well as local landscape architect EDSA, on the project. “Miami is a cosmopolitan and tropical city,” he continues. “The building puts a special emphasis on responding to its tropical location by providing an extraordinary indoor-outdoor experience.” Off-site, residents have membership priviliges and access to the Turnberry Isle Resort & Country Club, located less than a mile away in Aventura. The country club offers two 18-hole golf courses recently redesigned by Raymond Floyd, a water park, a spa, a deep-water marina, the Cañas tennis facility, and newly added restaurants Bourbon Steak by Chef Michael Mina and Coursair. The idea behind all of the ameni-

ties, says Soffer, is to allow residents to live as though they are always on vacation. “We pride ourselves on being able to find innovative ways to offer the ultimate in luxury resort lifestyle”, he says of his company. The development is Soffer’s main focus right now—and one that is close to his heart. “Over the years, I have decided to home in on what truly drives me, and that is to focus on the residential side of the business,” he says. “I learned that it’s best to focus only on a couple of projects at a time in order to deliver a true masterpiece.” ◗ Residences start at $4 million (Collection residences, $19.5 million; penthouses, $35 million); turnberryoceanclub.com ONELIFE 45

RIO RISING THE SITE OF THIS SUMMER’S OLYMPIC GAMES, RIO DE JANEIRO IS A CITY TO BEHOLD. HERE, A LOOK AT SOME OF THE FASCINATING ARCHITECTURE THAT SHAPES THE NATION’S CULTURAL CAPITAL—AND WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR BRAZIL’S “CIDADE MARAVILHOSA.” BY SUZANNE GANNON 46

ONELIFE

Home to a concentrated 6 million of Brazil’s mammoth 200 million population, Rio de Janeiro is the swirling epicenter of a cultural legacy as rich in art, music, and dance as it is lush in the biodiversity of its indigenous forests. With its spectacular natural splendor, the city lends itself to a voluptuous, statementmaking architectural tradition that has spanned five centuries. From the air, Rio appears as a cache of jewels nestled in velvet peaks. The sparkling city by the sea—named Rio de Janeiro (“River of January”) by explorers who arrived in winter and mistook the harbor for the mouth of a river—is hemmed in on the Atlantic side by a ribbon of white sand beloved by volleyballers and sun worshippers alike. It is here on the eastern seaboard that Cristo Redentor literally welcomes visitors with open arms. While much of the city’s architecture hints at its Colonial past—balconied palaces with ornate cornices and churches with gilded Baroque interiors—by the 1920s, Art Deco began to arrive from faraway ports. Perched atop Corcovado Mountain, more than 2,000 feet above ground in the Tijuca National Forest, the 700-ton Art

Deco monolith is perhaps the most visible icon in the city. Completed in 1931, the statue—sculpted from soapstone and concrete by Frenchman Paul Landowski with a face chiseled by Romanian artist Gheorghe Leonida and erected by Brazilian and French engineers Heitor da Silva Costa and Albert Caquot—echoes the Catholicism brought to Brazil by Portuguese settlers in the early 1500s. Beginning in the 1930s, a wave of Modernist design began washing over the coastal cityscape. This new urbanism, which valued socioeconomic progress, coincided with the dictatorial reign of President Getulio Vargas, a man intent on making a mark upon his country’s civic projects. A key inspiration for this new look was the work of Le Corbusier. The Swiss-French architect was hired to oversee the design of what is widely considered to be the first Modernist public building in all of the Americas: the Ministry of Education and Health (or Gustavo Capanema Palace, named for Brazil’s first Minister of Health), in Rio’s downtown (or Centro) area of Castelo. From 1936 to 1943, Le Corbusier oversaw a dream team of Brazilian designers that included Lúcio Costa, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Jorge Machado Moreira, Ernani Vasconcelos, Carlos Leão, Roberto Burle Marx, and a young intern who 48

would go on to become one of the country’s top architects, Oscar Niemeyer. Each would secure his name in the country’s architectural archives by participating in the creation of a sleek, vertical box on stilts that glows at night like an illuminated grid. Threading through the concrete cylinders at its base are fresh open public spaces planted with gardens and embellished with murals of glazed blue and white tiles (azulejos) reminiscent of the Portuguese motherland. It wasn’t long before these progressive thinkers stepped out on their own. With the economic growth of the late 1940s and early 1950s, government workers migrated from the countryside into the city for new jobs in droves. Earning modest incomes, these municipal workers needed an inexpensive place to live. In response, Reidy developed one of the city’s first amenity-rich residential complexes known as Conjunto Residencial Prefeito Mendes de Moraes, familiarly known as Pedregulho. Located in Benfica, in the northern part of the city, and comprising more than 300 apartments, a school with a gymnasium and swimming pool, a health center, a daycare center, and open green space, the serpentine buildings follow the site’s topography and are elevated structurally and conceptually to afford views of Guanabara Bay.

Reidy left his mark on Rio in other areas as well, namely the cultural sector. In the early 1950s, he embarked upon a new project, a contemporary art museum in the Centro’s Flamengo Park area, Museu de Arte Moderna. Completed in 1955, the MAM, with its angled concrete ribs, is regarded by some as Reidy’s most distinctive concept—and the first example of Brutalism in Rio. The MAM’s breathtaking centerpiece is an interior spiral staircase that dangles from above like a twisted accordion. Also in the Centro, a 15-minute walk west from the Ministry of Education and Health, is the Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião. Named for the city’s patron saint, the building was commissioned by Archbishop Jaime de Barros Câmara in the 1960s and designed by Edgar Fonseca to replace a Rococo cathedral. Weighty and faceted, the structure evokes a Mayan pyramid but with a circular base to denote equidistant proximity to God for all worshippers. Soaring skyward to a height of 200 feet, the structure marries an Avant Garde form with 40,000 square feet of Old World stained glass. Admired for the contrast between its earthy concrete exterior and an exuberant interior splashed with light, the cathedral is best visited in daylight to enjoy the stained glass in its entirety. In the last two decades, Rio’s international reputation for envelope-pushing architecture has continued to endure. Perhaps one of the most well known contributors to the city’s skyline is Rio native Oscar Niemeyer. Widely credited with developing much of Brasilia’s skyline—including the Cathedral of Brasilia, for which he won a Pritzker Prize in 1988— ONELIFE 49

ing, Portzamparc’s Cidade das Artes, on the south side of town, finally opened its doors to the public in 2013 and now serves as a dramatic landmark amidst the many freeways looping around it. Envisioned as an oasis of culture in a relatively barren part of town called Barra da Tijuca, the cultural hub capitalizes on the subway routes and pedestrian ramps being expanded in preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics and includes spaces for exhibitions and performances in dance, music, theater, and the visual arts. With an assemblage of contoured concrete slabs called “sails,” a slanted roof, and interior caverns bathed in sunlight, the structure boasts superb acoustical quality thanks to high, hollow volumes of space enclosed in their own cocoons.

Rio continues its Modernist movement in the residential sector as well. This summer, construction will begin on Casa Atlântica, a waterfront tower in historic Copacabana Beach designed by the late Zaha Hadid, the Pritzker-winning architect behind some of the world’s most impressive residential spaces, including Miami’s One Thousand Museum. Renderings of Casa Atlântica show 11 stories of curvaceous private balconies stacked like the spine of a bonecolored fish. Mirroring the lapping tide on the shoreline it overlooks,

Niemeyer embarked upon one of his most striking modern designs toward the end of his career, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Nieterói. Located across Guanabara Bay, about 17 miles from the city center in the chic enclave of Niteroi, MAC is perched on the edge of a cliff, hovering over the water like a flying saucer. The museum, which opened in 1996, serves as the centerpiece of Niemeyer Way, a cultural parkland that includes the whimsical performance space Teatro Popular.

Just this past December, a new cultural staple opened in Rio: Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow). Built on a pier on the western shore of Guanabara Bay, the museum was part of the city’s plans to revitalize the impoverished Porto Maravilha area in advance of the Olympics. Santiago Calatrava’s structure challenges visitors to contemplate their relationship with the natural world, both beneficial and destructive. The multimillion-dollar, energy-efficient building’s most salient flourish is the cantilevered roof with mobile wings that extends out over the water, juxtaposing a man-made marvel with a natural one. A reflecting pool, visible through glass, enhances the view of the mountains, the bay, and the machinery of a busy port that includes tanker ships, warships, and airplanes landing at Santos Dumont Airport, as well as the bridge to Niterói.

If the initiation of high-profile projects by increasing numbers of globally renowned architects is not proof enough of Rio’s place as a superpower of sophistication on the world stage, then its continued inroads into global sporting events certainly is. In 2014, Rio proved its mettle as a host city with the FIFA World Cup. Now, just two years later, the city will host the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games. Of course, along with hosting the Olympics comes a slew of preparations including new structures that will serve as venues for the games as well as permanent fixtures for the city’s use long after the games have closed.

Rio’s thoughtful architecture, both past and present, celebrates its rich cultural heritage. And with a new focus on social revitalization through major productions like the 2016 Summer Olympics— and a commitment to legacy and sustainability—it’s a winning combination worthy of gold. ◗

Barra di Tijuca, one of nine areas of the city where Olympic events will take place, is the domain of international architecture and engineering giant AECOM. The AECOM team has brought to life a mini-city, all navigable by sinuous paths illuminated after dark in the Olympic colors. The Velodrome, a stunning, 5,000-seat space that will host the cycling competition, is topped with a roof that mimics the helmets of cyclists who will compete on the tracks inside. The Tennis Centre wows with metallic louvers that change colors. The Aquatics Stadium for swimming and water polo will be adorned with azulejos by renowned Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão, blue and white curling waves evoking the country’s history. ONELIFE

A REMOTE RESORT IN THE FORESTS OF SOUTHWESTERN JAPAN IS A MODERN RETREAT BUILT AROUND AN ANCIENT WELLNESS RITUAL. BY GISELA WILLIAMS

52

ONELIFE

Humans have been soaking their tired and weary bones in thermal pools for thousands of years. But, as with everything they do, the Japanese have turned the tradition into a highly evolved art form. The ancient ritual of onsen—bathing in the mineral-rich, steaming waters of Japan’s many geothermal springs—is carried out like an ageless, graceful dance. In the world of luxury hotels, Aman—which has 30 resorts, hotels, and private resorts in 20 countries—tends to do something similar. The Aman architects manage to distill a country, from its landscape to its history, down to its most attractive and meaningful components to create an experience that is both perfectly classical and powerfully reflective of place.

So when Aman creates a Japanese onsen, you get something as exceptional and jaw-dropping as the just-opened Amanemu. Set within a forested region in the south of Japan, near a sawtoothed coastline and not far from the Shinto Ise Grand Shrine temple, Amanemu opened to the public in March. Aman’s second

property in Japan (the first sits at the top of a dramatic skyscraper in Tokyo) is built around the area’s natural springs, allowing guests to take part in modern onsen in its serene, 21,500-square-foot spa. The spa complex is a sight to behold. Pools of water lined with black local stone are like artfully placed mirrors reflecting the sky amidst lush forestland. Anchored by two communal hot-spring pools within a private garden, the spa also includes a pair of onsen pavilions set in an adjacent maple-tree grove. Facing Ago Bay is a 100-foot-long outdoor swimming pool, while a yoga pavilion made almost entirely of glass completes the picture. The mineral-rich waters are said to have both healing and relaxing powers, helping to ease muscle, joint, and nerve pain as well as heal skin ailments. Amanemu therapists often inject additional antioxidants through local algae, a process called kampo. Benefits are realized through holistic treatments such as aquatic bodywork, a type of massage in which a client floats in water as a therapist maneuvers AN AMANEMU SUITE (LEFT) DRAWS NATURE INSIDE WITH FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS AND BAMBOO TOUCHES; EVERY ACCOMMODATION ALSO OFFERS A PRIVATE ONSEN BATH (BELOW) FOR RELAXING IN SOLITUDE OPPOSITE PAGE: AMANEMU’S MINERAL SPA INCLUDES AN ALFRESCO RELAXATION AREA OUTFITTED WITH DAYBEDS

the body into a series of yoga-like postures, creating a feeling of weightlessness that is meditative and profoundly relaxing.

villas all have private onsen water baths, while the villas also offer 270-square-foot onsen areas that feel like private spas.

The rest of the resort is equally Zen-like. Arriving at the property, a long driveway curves up a small hill through lawns shaded by maple and cherry trees and ends at the arrival pavilion, where guests are greeted with hot tea. From this perch, one first glimpses the gardens and beyond to Ago Bay, also called the Bay of Pearls, a jagged coastline of pearl farms and rocky islets. Acclaimed Singapore-based architect Kerry Hill designed Amanemu in the style of a historical Japanese village with 24 spacious suites and four twobedroom villas housed in traditional Minka buildings—simple but modern structures of dark-stained timber and black-tile clay roofs that extend to cover terraces.

While it’s tempting to spend time in complete idyll at Amanemu, guests should plan for at least a day or two to explore the region. Just outside the resort, Ise Shima National Park is carved with hiking trails worth exploring in every season. More than 650 feet off the ground, the Yokoyama Observatory provides expansive views of the surrounding islets and beyond. Many of the pearl rafts visible from the resort are the source of the legendary Mikimoto pearls from nearby Mikimoto Pearl Island. Visitors to the island can buy a strand of the famous pearls, as well as meet native amas—the female divers who would collect the pearl oysters and then return them following the insertion procedure. Today, this is all done mechanically, but the amas who remain often still dive for shellfish.

Airy and filled with light, each accommodation captures the essence of the local culture through touches like bamboo basket–like lanterns and screen walls. Dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding forest, garden, or sea views, drawing gazes outward to the surrounding nature. There are modern amenities like stateof-the-art flat-screen TVs, but they remain hidden in wooden consoles so as not to distract from the breathtaking environs. Suites and

Guests may also want to make the pilgrimage to the Ishigami San in Osatsu, which has been worshiped for centuries by the amas. It is said that the spirit that resides there grants women one wish. By then, most will know what to ask for: a return to Amanemu. ◗ 2165 Hazako Hamajima-cho, Shima-shi, Mie 517-0403 Japan, aman.com/resorts/amanemu, 754.216.7830 (Aman reservations) ONELIFE

Imagine a seaside palace fit for a king. Such was the vision of Joseph Leone when, in 2007, he was invited to design a grand home on close to 5 acres of exclusive waterfront property in South Florida’s Hillsboro Beach, with 465 feet of unobstructed beachfront and 492 feet of Intracoastal frontage. Nearly a decade later, his dream has materialized as Le Palais Royal, an extraordinary 60,000-square-foot, 11-bedroom, 22-bath château flanked by the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. “Everything I do is ultra-luxurious,” says Leone, an Italian-born multidisciplinary designer who started his career creating jewelry for Parisian fashion houses such as Jean Patou, Rochas, Céline, Annick Goutal, and Lancel. “Here, I wanted to do something that has never been built in America—something like a European castle that would be constructed with quality and last for hundreds of years for future generations to appreciate.” Inspired by the Palace of Versailles and Buckingham Palace, Le Palais Royal was originally designed as a residence for Massachusetts-based construction mogul Robert Pereira. Pereira decided to sell the property before moving in, putting the château on the market for $159 million. The property is the only structure of its kind in the country, a modern palace that boasts the dichotomy of Old World craftsmanship and contemporary technologies. “It is built like a fortress on 1,700 piles that reach 45 feet into the ground to the bedrock, and its walls are made of 12-inch-thick poured concrete,” Leone says. The sprawling castle is fitted with energy-efficient, hurricane-resistant custom windows; acoustical treatments in interior walls; a pre-programmed heating and cooling system with integral solar and blackout shading; a built-in sound system; and high-end security features. It also houses an array of entertainment options, including a 3D television, a 1,300-gallon aquarium wall, and the world’s first IMAX home theater. “It’s

almost like a NASA system,” Leone says. “Everything is thought out and programmed.” Upon approach, a limestone-paved drive leads to Le Palais Royal’s grand porte cochere. Behind the home’s two double front doors, rooms are defined with lacquered mahogany millwork, South African and Brazilian marble flooring, and more than $6 million in gold leaf finishing details. Every bathroom is outfitted with 22-karat gold-plated French plumbing fixtures. “I love transferring the quality of fine jewelry to construction,” Leone says, pointing to the home’s pièce de résistance: the grand entrance staircase, which sits beneath a 120-yearold Austrian chandelier. “Like the stair in Buckingham Palace, it looks like a beautiful necklace or ring.” Outside, the manicured landscape is a canvas for 13 engaging water features including a 4,500-square-foot heated infinity pool, a 25-foot-tall cascading waterfall, and a gold-leafed choreographed fountain. A summer kitchen, a putting green, and a swim-up bar constitute some of the property’s alfresco entertaining essentials. Separate from the main residence, two 3,000-square-foot VIP guest villas (adding six bedrooms and nine bathrooms) rest atop an underground facility—more than 27,000 square feet that will house a go-kart track, an ice-skating rink, a bowling alley, and a nightclub. Ample vehicle storage is found in a 30-car showroom-style garage; two docks on the Intracoastal accommodate a 200-foot and a 140-foot yacht.

FROM TOP: ONE OF THE 22 BATHS, OVERLOOKING THE ATLANTIC; A LIMESTONEPAVED DRIVE LEADS TO THE GRAND PORTE COCHERE

With all of these remarkable features and more—including a massage room, a gym, and a 3,000-bottle wine cellar—Le Palais Royal sets an unprecedented new standard for modern luxury living. “There’s nothing else like it,” says Mayi de la Vega, CEO and founder of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty. “Unlike other houses here, this one took nine years to build because of the quality of construction and the level of finishes and handmade details.” And for those, like Leone, who are passionate about quality and craftsmanship, a jewel like Le Palais Royal is worth the wait. ◗ Contact ONE Sotheby’s International Realty for more information at 305.901.5003. A Life Less Ordinary In her gorgeous photography tome, Kelly Klein captures the extraordinary beauty of life.

No matter the subject, Kelly Klein (pictured here) manages to find the unique allure and artistry in each. “I’m a very positive person,” she says. “I wake up and see beauty.” In Photographs by Kelly Klein, the normally private artist gives the world a curated glimpse of her vision. The intimate collection of 200 images spans 35 years of her life behind the lens. “I don’t keep a diary; I take pictures,” says Klein, the former design muse of her famous fashion designer ex-husband, Calvin. “These are people, places, and encounters that have shaped me.”

The book showcases a rarely seen portrait of privilege. Flipping through the pages, one can spy Calvin napping on a yacht in Mustique alongside tycoons David Geffen, Barry Diller, and Sandy Gallin; Henry Kissinger and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner lingering after breakfast in Tangier; and Fiat heir Lapo Elkann sunning on a sailboat gliding along the Italian Riviera. Among these candid moments, Klein interjects dazzling, bold fashion images (including a few outtakes) that she has created for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Vanity Fair Italia, and a slew of international Vogue editions. She also exposes the everyday moments of her own private life, like her 8-year-old son enjoying a Popsicle and her mother modeling comic sunglasses. ONELIFE

Klein’s photography career was as unexpected as the subjects of her book. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, she worked as a design assistant at Ralph Lauren and then Calvin Klein, where her all-American look inspired Calvin’s crisp designs and his resulting nickname, “Calvin Clean.” The two fell in love and married in Rome in 1986. When the couple separated 10 years later, Klein left her ex-husband’s business—and was hired to photograph Warren Beatty for the cover of Mirabella. Opportunities snowballed from there. Today, Klein’s schedule revolves around her work and her son, Lukas, whom she and her beau, Australian polo player Nick Manifold, welcomed via surrogate. She largely divides her time among New York, Aspen, and Palm Beach, where she custom built a 3,000-square-foot home overlooking the Intracoastal. Featuring cement, glass, and shades of taupe and sand, the abode is cleanly minimalist—like her style in all aspects of life. “The way I dress, decorate a home, or take a picture is very simple, classic, and effortless,” Klein says. “But I hope it has romance, elegance—and a little edge.” ◗

ONE on One BY TOM AUSTIN

PAMM Director

FRANKLIN SIRMANS Miami’s newest resident is ready to up the ante at the city’s beloved museum.

ONE: What are your ambitions for PAMM, including fundraising? FS: We have so many talented people here, and I just want to enhance our existing programs and bring even more people into the museum. And, of course, we want to continue collaborations with other local institutions. Raising money is definitely part of the gig and part of PAMM’s growth. I’ve met with all of our board members, and I’m laying a foundation for the future. The same friendships that bring in exhibitions with the best possible artists—the kind of exhibitions that attract international attention—will also lead to donations of art and money. ONE: Are there exhibitions you’re particularly looking forward to this year? FS: I’ve been very lucky; our curatorial team put together an amazing lineup of exhibitions well before I started here. Doris Salcedo, for instance, is a very important artist from Colombia. Her exhibition [through July 17] is part of our institutional consciousness that PAMM is an international museum situated in Miami, at the crossroads of North and South America. And the work of Michele Oka Doner [through September 11] should be really interesting. ONE: What are some of your favorite recent acquisitions? FS: Part of PAMM’s ambitions will be accomplished through acquisitions like our new video installation by Stan Douglas, Luanda-Kinshasa. This is a piece that crosses the borders of geography, questioning time and space, art, and reality. His work is a perfect fit for PAMM in that it speaks to both of the audiences that help define the museum: the Miami community and the global art community. Making this a joint acquisition with LACMA [Los Angeles County Museum of Art] heightens its aptness, highlighting PAMM’s growing role in dialogues with major American museums.

Atrabiliarios (detail), Doris Salcedo

ONE: How do you see the future of Miami as a center for the arts? FS: Miami has been a center for dialogue about contemporary art for a long time, and its influence is expanding every day on the international level. At PAMM, especially with all the interactions of Museum Park, we have a chance to be part of Miami’s cultural imagination, 365 days a year. Miami is growing so fast and changing so rapidly. This really is the city of the future. ONE: As a new resident of the city of the future, how do you plan on spending your down time? FS: I’m looking forward to seeing the Marlins and the Miami Heat play—all that good Miami stuff. ◗ 104 ONELIFE
