Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” —Thomas Merton
As art lovers from around the globe arrive in Miami hungry to feast their eyes on works by some of the world’s most inspirational, revered, and emerging artists at the spectacular Art Basel, we at ONE Life embark on a journey around the world, exploring art in all forms. Starting here at home, we delve into the design of L’Atelier—the stunning new development nestled in the heart of Miami Beach, which has been blessed by the touch of the talented and remarkable interior design mastermind Holly Hunt. A little farther north, Newgard Development Group has mixed old and new with the Gale Boutique Hotel & Residences in Fort Lauderdale, combining an impeccably restored 1950s landmark with new construction. Just steps from the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach, residents and guests alike will enjoy the luxury amenities and elevated service of Menin Hospitality while basking in the Gale’s nostalgic charm. South Florida has established itself as a destination for art and culture, and we are about to welcome another great addition to our rich cultural fabric: The delightful and talented fashion designer Naeem Khan will be relocating his headquarters from New York to Miami. ONE Life talked to Khan about his new oceanfront pad, and the inspiration he gets from our city’s bright colors and exciting energy. We also peek into the fantastical world of set designer Stefan Beckman. The jet-setter is the creative genius behind some of the most exhilarating fashion shows, parties, art exhibits, magazine editorials, and advertising campaigns. You may have admired his work on the pages of Vanity Fair or Vogue without realizing the creator, but once you meet the man here in ONE Life, he will be hard to forget. As noted on canvases throughout Basel, the world is truly our playground. Follow us as we head to South America to celebrate eight Latin American artists who are trailblazers in their fields. Then cross the ocean and let some of the world’s greatest architects take you on a high with a bird’s-eye view of their intricate, dazzling skyscrapers. The artistry of food is certainly one everyone can appreciate, and inside you’ll meet four Michelin-starred chefs who are taking their talents to a whole new level, experimenting with more casual bites as they open new eateries from San Francisco to Singapore. Enjoy the journey—and I’ll see you at Basel, in my wonderful hometown. There really is no better place to be.

The Wright Stuff A pair of young designers have just been given the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Frank Lloyd Wright and put their stamp on the Guggenheim brand. The Guggenheim has long been synonymous with high art and design, with museums in New York; Bilbao, Spain; and Abu Dhabi all designed by Wright. But the newest addition in Helsinki, Finland will be designed by Paris-based firm Moreau Kusonoki Architectes. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, along with the city of Helsinki, held its first open architectural competition to find just the right design for its new museum in Helsinki’s South Harbor area, near the historic city center. The highly visible site means the project will be an important piece of architectural eye candy for the city, as it immediately comes into view for passengers pulling into the harbor on cruise ships. More than 1,700 firms submitted proposals, with the six ultimately selected as finalists presented during “Guggenheim
Renderings of the winning design for The Guggenheim Helsinki, by architects Nicolas Moreau and Hiroko Kusonoki (left)
Helsinki Now,” an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Helsinki. This summer, a winner was announced: “Art in the City,” a proposal by Moreau Kusunoki Architectes. Founded by Nicolas Moreau and Hiroko Kusonoki in 2001, the firm is known for projects like the plaza at the Paris District Court at Porte de Clichy. For the Guggenheim Helsinki, Moreau Kusunoki began with the traditional waterfront vernacular: A series of linked pavilions with upswept rooftops in different configurations is anchored by a kind of lighthouse—a lit, translucent tower that serves as a beacon for the city at night. A charred-lumber facade is intended to honor the regeneration of the great forests of Finland. Moreau and Kusunoki say the journey has just begun: “The adventure now continues with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the people of Helsinki, and lovers of architecture and art.” —Tom Austin moreaukusunoki.com; designguggenheimhelsinki.org ONELIFE

A booming global market is resulting in recent unprecedented sales in the auction world. In Geneva, Sotheby’s nearly $161 million in sales at Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels shattered the category’s record worldwide. Almost every one of the 484 lots was snapped up, including the top draw: a 25.59-carat Burmese stone known as the Sunrise Ruby. Its final price—$30.3 million—broke records both for a ruby at auction and for any stone by maker Cartier. On the art front, Sigmar Polke’s retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York last year greatly increased his cachet. At a Contemporary Art Evening Auction, his Dschungel (Jungle) set a record for the German artist, fetching $27.13 million. The same night, Christopher Wool’s Riot brought in nearly $30 million—well over the estimated $18 million—breaking the record for any living American artist. Top seller of the night: Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Yellow and Blue), previously owned by Bunny Mellon, sold for $46.5 million. —Rebecca Kleinman

South African Zeitz-geist In 2016, Cape Town—a city that has become increasingly conscious of its artistic heritage—will welcome the nine-story, $46 million Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art. The museum, which is being funded by German art collector and retail tycoon Jochen Zeitz (former CEO of Puma), will be built within an old grain silo in partnership with the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Zeitz will be donating a singular art collection that ranges wildly with all manner of African artists, living in Africa and elsewhere, including: Ethiopian-American Julie Mehretu; Kudzanai Chiurai, a pop talent from Zimbabwe; and Dutch–South African Marlene Dumas. Zeitz MoCAA has been designed by London-based Thomas Heatherwick, whose projects include the U.K. Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and who has also proposed a network of lush islands for New York’s Pier55 plan. Heatherwick has incorporated the historic silo into a modern structure spanning 80 galleries and a rooftop sculpture garden. Cape Town was a 2014 World Design Capital, and next year, it will have a center of design and art that befits a city with international design stature. —TA

Two of Miami’s top showrooms are keeping their A-game strong with new eye-catching acquisitions. Monica James and Co. has become the exclusive Southeastern retailer of Parisian interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot’s capsule collection for British upholsterer George Smith. Among nine styles of neo-classical seating, the customizable spoon-backed Susannah dining chair—shown here in Napoli Granito and Napoli Rubino fabrics with stained wood legs—suits South Florida to a T. Fans of Miami-based designer Luis Pons will want to check out his new Curved Bar at NIBA Home. The piece is part of Pons’ delightfully clever Frames collection and is crafted from chunky picture frames in gold, silver, and black, and a carved wooden top that mirrors every groove. —RK

A Timeless TRIBUTE The Miami Design District will pay tribute to the late, great Frei Otto when a Shigeru Ban–designed replica of one of Otto’s famous designs moves into the neighborhood in December. When German-born Otto passed away before the awards ceremony—held earlier this year in Miami—2014 laureate Shigeru Ban stepped in for one last collaboration with his dear friend. Channeling the circa-1955 tent Otto created as a music pavilion for the Federal Garden Exhibition in Germany, Ban erected a replica outside the New World Center, welcoming guests to the event and celebrating the night’s top honoree. The four-point tensile tent is a prime example of Otto’s use of lightweight materials that make a minimal impact on the environment. Ban’s public installation traveled north for the Chicago Biennial before arriving back in Miami. —RK 20

SHOWTIME
The inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial, “The State of the Art of Architecture,” kicks off in October and runs through January, promising to honor the legacy of a city built by such great architects as Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s a big, bold moment for a big, bold city, intended to make Chicago a laboratory for contemporary architecture. Part of the equation is London-based architect David Adjaye—the man responsible for Washington, D.C.’s upcoming National Museum of African American History and Culture, whose retrospective is also running at the Art Institute of Chicago through January. Adjaye is on the Biennial advisory team and thinking, as ever, about the civic possibilities of architecture. With Chicago-based artist and social activist Theaster Gates, Adjaye is contemplating an architecturemeets-art project for the Biennial. “I’m talking about doing something on the South Side of Chicago with Theaster,” Adjaye said during the Pritzker Architecture Prize awards at the Frank Gehry–designed New World Center in Miami Beach. “I think the Biennial is going to be an important architectural moment for Chicago.” —TA
License to Thrill At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world was introduced to the future of the automobile industry—the F 015 Luxury in Motion autonomous luxury sedan by Mercedes-Benz. The F 015, which can pretty much drive itself, is essentially a living room on wheels: It’s equipped with four swiveling, captain-style chairs, which can be turned to face one another for social engagement. To make sure socializing passengers (and driver, since s/he is not actually driving) don’t miss out on the passing views, images of stunning landscapes can be projected on the car’s windows. The digital landscape in the F 015 is a nicely done array of touch screens, with touch points controlling a series of user interfaces. A mix of carbon fiber and aluminum lightens the weight of the F 015 considerably, and the car can handle a fuel cell and electric drivetrain. For those of an old-school bent, the F 015 can also be driven manually; exterior LED lights announce that a living, breathing, and entirely fallible human has taken the wheel. Given the talents of some all-too-human drivers, that’s a definite bonus. —TA 22

It’s high season for art and design lovers in Miami, as three prominent fairs take over the city. Starting with a preview December 1, Design Miami will set up shop across from the Miami Beach Convention Center through December 6. Just a short distance south, the New Art Dealers Alliance’s annual fair exhibits December 3–5 at the Fontainebleau, its fourth venue in Miami since launching in 2003 with 35 exhibitors. At the same time, the fourteenth annual Art Basel Miami Beach takes over the MBCC with modern and contemporary artworks from 250 galleries worldwide. Its nine sectors spill out into nearby Collins Park with outdoor sculptures curated by Nicholas Baume, director of the Public Art Fund, and SoundScape Park with film screenings organized by Artprojx director David Gryn. Stefan Beckman
SET DESIGNER
When he was a shaggy-haired, blond 6-year-old living in San Francisco, Stefan Beckman loved creating fantastical window displays alongside his father in his Union Street gift shop, The Enchanted Crystal, which still stands today. More than 40 years later, he’s still at it— conjuring up beautiful worlds, that is—only on a much bigger scale. Beckman is the creative genius behind some of the most immersive, surreal backdrops for runway shows, parties, art exhibits, and artistic magazine editorials and advertising campaigns. It was Beckman who dreamed up a Pinocchio workshop with Tim Burton as the wood carver and Amy Adams as his creation for a Vogue spread last December. He also built the sky-high plywood skate ramp that graced the runway at Coach’s first full show in London earlier this year and set Paris on fire with a re-creation of late Vogue editor Diana Vreeland’s living room— which she called her “garden of hell”—for Marc Jacobs. At 48, Beckman is the most in-demand set designer in the world, jetting between London, Shanghai, and his studio in Manhattan to create work for A-list clients like Versace, Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Vanity Fair. “Good design inspires,” says Beckman. “It should be an emotional experience, not a set for a set’s sake.” That emotional experience begins with an initial two-week to threemonth conversation between Beckman and the fashion designer. “It starts with a feeling and a mood,” he says. He then finds inspiration from all around— history, architecture, music, ballet, art.... His vivid visions derive widely and wildly, from Monopoly pieces and American Horror Story to a Bernardo Bertolucci film and an Ed Ruscha painting—and sometimes all at once. “Very Busby Berkeley meets Fellini meets Dalí” is how he describes one particular set he created for a Swarovski art exhibit in Paris.

He likens his process to putting on a play—collaborating with top fashion photographers, lighting specialists, hair and makeup professionals, models, and music producers to create “one world where everything comes together.” It’s a process he became familiar with back in college, making props, building sets, and shooting and editing shorts as a film and theater major at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, he worked in Los Angeles for a while as a film production assistant and television set dresser before moving to New York.
It was there that his career really took off. For a fashion spread in The New York Times Magazine, Beckman created what he calls “an Alien-meetsBlade Runner set built from packing crates.” After seeing it, photographer Steven Meisel hired him for Vogue—which led to a regular gig creating elaborate and memorable sets for Marc Jacobs, which he’s been doing since 2006.
Top to bottom: The Beckman-designed sets for Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2014 collection; Oscar de la Renta Spring 2009; Marc Jacobs Spring 2015
As busy as he is, Beckman can’t help but be consumed by every detail of a project. Whether it’s just the right height (8 feet) to hang the foam-filled Spandex clouds at Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2014 show in Paris, or the right shade of sand (“pebble,” which he still felt was a tad too gray) for a Tom Ford beach set, it has to be perfect. “There’s never enough time, but a deadline is good,” Beckman says. “It makes me focus. I also think, Just go with your gut and you’re probably right.” While he gears up for another year of museum exhibits, ad campaigns, and highly theatrical runway shows, Beckman also has a few other plans. He says he hopes one day to make a movie and maybe design housewares. Most of all, “I’d love to do the Met Ball,” he says of The Costume Institute’s annual fashion party. “There’s so much more I want to see, do, and say that I’m a little angstridden,” he adds. “It’s not about the money. I want to do things that push me and open my mind. I like to be busy.” ◗

Known for their high-end dining experiences, several Michelin-starred chefs around the world are now opening more casual restaurants that are equally satisfying. Leave the black card at home and enjoy a relaxing bite at these four joints from renowned culinary geniuses.
David Thompson
Long Chim, Singapore
Chef David Thompson earned a serious honor nearly 15 years ago when his highly respected Nahm in Bangkok became the first Thai restaurant to win a Michelin star. Now he’s showing diners a different gastronomic side of the capital city with Long Chim, a lively restaurant focused on Thai street food in Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. “It’s mad, eclectic, and full of mayhem—just as the streets of Bangkok,” he says. At Long Chim, which means come and taste in Thai, Thompson has made some adjustments to his usual culinary execution—like keeping in line with Singaporean preferences by using less salt. Authenticity is emphasized in a variety of noodle soups, including a top-notch beef dumpling soup and dishes like khao kluk kapi. Most of all, Thompson is having fun in the kitchen. “It’s a pleasant release just to concentrate on the quality of food rather than the fold, roll, and etiquette around it,” he says. “Here, the expectation is not on fine crockery, cutlery, or polished plates but upon the food and the ease and happiness of service.” 10 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore, +65 6688 7299, longchim.com.sg
Joshua Skenes
Fat Noodle, San Francisco
It costs $398 to experience Joshua Skenes’ daily-changing, 22-course menu at Saison, his San Francisco restaurant that earned three Michelin stars. But a seat at his new concept in the city, a Chinese restaurant in partnership with Umami Burger’s Adam Fleischman, costs $10 or less. Fat Noodle is an homage to the hand-pulled noodles and sauces of Beijing and Shanghai, some of Skenes’ favorite cuisine. “I love the flavors of China as a whole but especially Sichuan,” he says. Ideal for late-night hunger cravings, the casual eatery features made-to-order, customizable bowls of Chinese noodles. Guests choose their own sauces, meats, and vegetables, making their selections as they move down an assembly line. Most importantly, diners familiar with Skenes’ culinary abilities at Saison will discover there’s no sacrifice in quality despite the enormous price difference. “Food is the same, whether it is $800 or $8, in that it is either good or it is not,” Skenes says. “Using the best products you can afford and cooking with care are company-wide values regardless of the location.” 92 2nd Street, San Francisco, fatnoodle.com

Parisian Yannick Alléno is a long-standing denizen of the Michelin three-star rank—first with Le Meurice hotel’s namesake restaurant in 2007 and now at the exquisite Pavillon Ledoyen. While maintaining those standards, Alléno has now ventured into the casual domain with Stay, an eatery featuring classic French fare alongside dishes inspired by his own travels. “I wanted to move away from gastronomic conventions and create modern cuisine—something simple, a place where you can go with friends or kids but that is still French gastronomy,” he says. After opening locations in Dubai, Taipei, and Beijing, Alléno has now brought Stay to Paris. In the hotel Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg, guests can dine on perfectly executed dishes such as poultry terrine on grilled toast, bavette of beef with fleur de sel, marinated beef tataki, and barbecue-style pork belly before choosing a fashionable dessert from the Pastry Library, such as a lemon tart topped with an edible button. 15, rue Boissy d’Anglas, Paris, +33 1 44941414, sofitel-paris-lefaubourg.com

Niño Viejo, Barcelona
Since he and his brother, Ferran, closed their trendsetting temple of molecular gastronomy, El Bulli, in 2011, Albert Adrià has refocused his talents on elBarri, a group of six restaurants in Barcelona, all within walking distance of one another. One of the casual creations under this gastronomic umbrella is Niño Viejo, “an informal concept inspired by the cities of Mexico and its urbanity,” Adrià describes. The menu is dominated by appetizers, tacos, and cakes, along with a Mexican cocktail bar serving, of course, tequila and mezcal. The eatery’s name, Spanish for old child, refers to the innocent joy the owners hope diners feel while sampling their Mexican fare. “We want our guests to experience the happy, simpler state that children and older people are in—and to know all the varieties of dishes that can be found all over the streets, informal places, and corners of urban Mexico,” Adrià says. Calling the area the next “epicenter for fashion,” designer Naeem Khan gets ready to move his life—and his massive fashion empire—to South Florida. By Alice Cavanagh photography by gio alma

t’s 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning in Miami, and Naeem Khan has already been up for a while. He likes to wake up early when he’s in town, sleeping with the curtains open so he will stir when the sun rises, then share a pot of English breakfast tea with his wife, jewelry designer Ranjana Khan. They live in an airy, ultra-modern apartment in the performing arts district of the city with their two miniature Australian shepherds, India and Rajah. Their home is by the ocean—the shimmering siren that has enticed Khan’s gradual relocation from New York. “I bought the apartment here years ago because I love the ocean and the proximity to South America,” he says, noting that he had not originally intended to move to Miami full-time. “The more I’m here, though, the more I realize that it’s a big cultural hub and could be an epicenter for fashion. The colors of the city, the people, and the energy here inspire me so much. I love the openness of Miami as well. I feel like I can breathe.” And so, what was once simply a long-weekend destination and a break from New York for the 57-year-old fashion designer will soon be his permanent home—as well as the official Naeem Khan headquarters, as he relocates his studio and offices to Miami over the next six months. Currently in the early building stages (he acquired the large plot of land on Northwest South River Drive in the Miami River area earlier this year), Khan’s new headquarters are being designed by Arquitectonica—80,000 square feet of space that will serve as much more than an “office space.” Here, Khan will work on his collections, house his haute couture and bridal productions, and also hold fashion shows and various art collaborations. “I want to give back to the country that has given me so much, to bring back high-end design and couture production to the United States,” says the Mumbai, India–born designer. The move is also the culmination of a personal dream for Khan. “The beauty of the space is that it is on the water,” he says. “I had a dream for many years that I would one day be able to zip to my office in a boat…. I so believe in dreams coming true.” When looking over Khan’s remarkable life, prophetic notions are a recurring theme. As a young teenager in India, Khan would pore over fashion magazines. He ended up enrolling in business school in New York—until a chance encounter brought him back to the fashion world. In the late 1970s, Khan’s father worked on fabrics for the iconic designer Roy Halston Frowick, known as Halston. One day, he dragged his son along to one of his meetings to help

translate for him, and the enthusiastic 19-year-old student made an impression. Halston offered him a job on the spot. “I had no idea who [Halston] was, and when I was leaving his office he handed me an issue of Life magazine with him on the cover and told me to read it,” recalls Khan. “I was just a kid whose life was about to change forever.” As the young apprentice of the best in the business, Khan found himself smack in the middle of the New York arts scene, rubbing shoulders with the iconoclasts of the day: Andy Warhol and Keith Haring were collaborators and friends of Halston; Elizabeth Taylor was a regular client. “I had no idea of the vastness of what we were doing or how important those people were,” Khan reflects. “It was the wild time of Studio 54, and there was freedom of sex and drugs and craziness—but looking back, I can see that fashion was so fresh then.” Although he worked alongside Halston for only a year or two, the glamorous style of that epoch clearly made a lasting impression on Khan. Even today, his eveningwear collections are imbued with the color and glitz of the halcyon days of disco and old Hollywood, which has helped make him the go-to designer for red-carpet glamour. But while almost every notable woman with a 40

stylish occasion on the horizon—be it Michelle Obama or Taylor Swift— has Khan on speed dial, he remains remarkably down to earth. “My parents are karmic people, and I was brought up on that philosophy,” he says. “You work hard, you don’t run after money, and if you believe in your dreams, it will work out.” With this approach, Khan has amassed a solid business—his eponymous collection, which he launched in 2003, is now sold in more than 200 stores around the world—standing apart from the pack with his striking, timeless designs. “I do not design clothes that are trendy,” he says. “I just take whatever I think is beautiful and classic and make it relevant for now. We need newness, but we don’t need to make a statement every season. The clothes themselves make a statement.” For Khan, the seed of a collection can come from anywhere—a square of fabric, or something he encounters during his colorful travels, be it in Latin America, India, or right here in Miami. But more often than not, his collections come from a melting pot of influences. “That’s why I find Miami so interesting—because it’s so culturally diverse,” he says. “This is the point where South America meets North America,” adding that there is also something about the city that reminds him of his motherland, India: “There is a connection between the two—the weather, the culture, the flowers are similar…. It makes me feel at home.” ◗

LANDMARK LIVING One of Fort Lauderdale’s long-standing gems, the Escape Hotel is transforming into the new Gale Boutique Hotel & Residences—a fresh concept that will undoubtedly shine in historic North Beach Village. BY Tom Austin
The vision: to transform a 1950s hot spot into a modern-day boutique hotel and residence. The original 96-room building of the Escape Hotel will be restored and merged with a newly constructed 12-story, 128-unit condominium tower featuring one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Renamed the Gale Boutique Hotel & Residences, the $120 million project is slated to open in 2017. “The Gale provides us with a great opportunity to respect the past while defining the future through design, amenities, and services,” says Harvey Hernandez, chairman and CEO of Newgard Development Group, the developer on the project.

When it was built in 1948, the Escape’s intimate scale and mid-century modern design gave the neighborhood an identifying look as other properties followed suit. The Gale team’s objective was to make sure the new residential tower didn’t compete with the original hotel building—or vice versa. “We do not believe either component should dominate the concept,” says project architect Jorge Garcia of Garcia Stromberg. The original structure set the scale for the project, he explains, and the new building reflects the local, mid-century design of the original. Nestled between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal, the Gale takes full advantage of its environs, incorporating open-air breezeways and intimate courtyards housing lush landscapes and comfortable seating areas to enjoy the outdoors. In addition to the residential 44

units, the new structure will house a fitness center, two rooftop pools, a spa, and retail space on the ground floor. Inside the residential units, modern features highlight an openconcept floor plan: Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with impactresistant glass, gourmet kitchens, spacious walk-in closets, and glass shower enclosures feel “upscale yet approachable,” says interior designer Giancarlo Pietri of Urban Robot Associates, who also designed the Kaskades Suites at Gale South Beach. Pietri felt it was important to keep cohesiveness between the residences and the hotel. “Throughout the interiors of both properties, we are using a combination of natural textures and a warm, neutral palette accented by crisp white, chrome metal, and deep cerulean blues,” he says.
On the hotel side—overseen by Menin Hospitality, whose portfolio also includes the Gale South Beach—rooms are appointed with marble baths, steam showers, luxury cotton linens, and modern tech like the iHome docking station and a Control4 automation system, which coordinates elements like entertainment and lighting. While the Gale team says the residential tower and hotel will have two unique atmospheres, they will ultimately complement each other and be linked through some shared uses. For example, residents will have full use of the hotel’s amenities, including turndown service and 24-hour valet. The residential tower’s eighth-floor amenity deck can also be used by hotel guests. The idea, says Pietri, is that “hotel guests and residents can eat, drink, dine, and mingle together” while enjoying a spectacular South Florida sunset. As the sun sets on the Escape Hotel’s remarkable history, the Gale team is excited to shine a light on the future of Fort Lauderdale. “Our aim is to tell a new story that is true to place while representing a new beginning as Fort Lauderdale matures,” says Pietri. ◗ For more information, visit galefll.com.

Damiani transforms found materials into collages, sculptures, videos, and installations that are informed by her interest in geology, archaeology, and cartography. Her materials have an inbuilt narrative, such as public records, which she then deconstructs to strip away the initial context of the work and examine the manipulability of cultural items. One of her best-known pieces, What Once Was (2009) takes the form of a carved book that presents the hypothetical disappearance of Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. Damiani, who studied both architecture and art in college in Lima and earned a master of fine arts from Goldsmiths College at the University of London, designed this piece to portray a critical concern regarding how architecture and landmarks can shape the urban landscape and presents the question of what would happen to a cityscape if a monument of these proportions were to disappear. She began with a book containing a double-spread image of the Gateway Arch and carved out holes in the pages. She then isolated words below the image, leaving random words suggesting the end of the Gateway Arch: “What once was a great hope for a great new period … is in danger of falling….” Born in Lima in 1979, Damiani lives and works in Copenhagen. Her most recent exhibitions include the 2015 Venice Biennale, Baró Galeria in São Paulo, and Marker 2015 in Dubai.
SOUTH AMERICA Jorge Pedro Núñez, Venezuela Born in Caracas, Núñez is an avant-garde artist who uses an unusually wide range of materials in his work. His use of record albums and books encased in galvanized metal, steel, and wire showcases his unique approach to creating mixed-media pieces. The boxes and walls used in much of his work could even be interpreted as architectural models with various sized cubes housing symbolic objects, allowing the viewer to imagine the life or thoughts that are housed within. Núñez

also embraces works on paper and is an avid collage artist. One of the projects that helped put him on the map was his 2007–2008 series Black Mountains in Color, in which he created 50 collages made from the advertising pages of Artforum magazine. Núñez used the colors, patterns, and texts from the periodical to reproduce images recalling masterpieces of modern and contemporary art history. The exhibition ended with the projection of photos of the magazine pages cut and manipulated as geometric shapes—placed upon the original magazine pages, these shapes distorted the original message and created a new colorful installation. Núñez, 39, studied art in Paris, where he now lives and works. He exhibited at Art Basel Miami 2013 and last year had solo exhibitions at KaBe Contemporary in Miami and Ignacio Liprandi in Buenos Aires.

Tonico Lemos Auad, Brazil Lemos Auad’s sculptures and installations investigate materiality, sensuality, process, and relationships between the audience and their environment. Using a wide range of materials, he creates lyrical forms, from the ephemeral and fleeting to the precious and enduring. Notions of luck, chance, and the supernatural pervade his work. But beyond playfulness, his art resonates with a darker underbelly of existence—an awareness of death and the shortness of life are always at hand. His diverse work focuses on the easily overlooked details of everyday life: A series of furry creatures sculpted from carpet lint look like stuffed animals a child would want to pick up and cuddle—but in all actuality, they would disintegrate and fall apart in the grasp of a child’s hands. Lemos Auad, 37, who lives and works in London, studied architecture in Brazil and received a master of fine art from Goldsmiths College at the University of London. His most recent exhibits include Pivô in São Paulo and the Drawing Biennial in London.

Eduardo Basualdo, Argentina Buenos Aires–based artist Basualdo often reflects on the reaction of the human body to the pressure of architectural restrictions, which he considers part of a broader investigation into how we live within cultural limits. His sculptural installations, often daunting in scale and gloomy in color, are exercises in realizing the finitude of the human body and the space it inhabits. For example, an installation for the nonprofit Frieze Projects New York last year featured two soccer goals erected in a park that mimicked a real soccer field yet was impossible to use, as the goals were blocked with glass. Basualdo’s early training as an actor and puppeteer, with a degree from the Teatro General San Martín, Buenos Aires, forms the basis of his desire to master built environments that serve as a framework in cultural systems and the ways in which they frame and control the world around us. The 38-year-old also studied fine arts at the Instituto Nacional de Artes Visuales in Buenos Aires and continues to work and live in his hometown. In 2015, he exhibited at the Venice Biennale, XII Bienal de La Habana in Cuba, and My Buenos Aires at La Maison Rouge in Paris.

São Paulo–based artist Komatsu’s sculptures and installations use architectural and design forms to critique prevalent social orders. The artist describes his work as “a reflection of a series of perceptions born by the meeting of streets and urban spaces,” where he observes the logic of construction and evolution. His work—such as a wall of bricks or giant concrete blocks balanced on crystal glassware—represent demolitions, abandoned objects, and destroyed walls and evoke the idea of reconstruction, searching for new models of existence and coexistence. The fragile crystal glasses and heavy building components are designed to support each other while at the same time are at risk of breaking into pieces. Komatsu’s work lingers on the relationship between divergent sculpture materials and art, but it also has a social intention: representing the possibilities for survival and the inevitable transformation of time. His art deals with themes of regeneration, focusing on the physical redevelopment of urban space as a wider metaphor for man, nature, or architecture in a continuous process of change. Komatsu, 37, showed his work last year at the Brazilian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and at Art Basel Miami.
Gabriel Sierra, Colombia Sierra was born in San Juan Nepomuceno, Colombia in 1975 and studied industrial design in Bogotá. Employing the languages of design and architecture, Sierra’s wood sculptures challenge the rules of functionality and explore ideas of community, habitat, and urbanism. He combines the use of wood with organic materials, such as a grid of wooden rulers woven into a simple bowl of apples or a sculpture still life of apples on shelves, which viewers are encouraged to pull out and help themselves to a snack. Another theme in his work is the use of columns and wood cubes of varying dimensions. Sierra is intrigued by the language of man-made objects and the dimensions of the spaces in which we live, work, and think. He employs a variety of techniques—from sculpture and spatial interventions to performance and texts—to examine how the human body functions in relation to its environment. Originally trained in architecture and design, Sierra draws on the history of Latin American clockwise from above: untitled (pocket square), 2011; hang it all, 2006; cuasi-cuadrado, 2011–2012; untitled at the 2013 carnegie international in pittsburgh; sierra

Marina Rheingantz, Brazil Rheingantz, 32, lives and works in São Paulo—a definite influence seen in her landscape paintings. Born in Araraquara, the native Brazilian depicts dark and odd landscapes in an almost abstract format. Rheingantz draws inspiration from memories and images from her travels, her life, and photographic works. Her large-scale canvases showcase movement as well as an organic sensibility that offers a connection to the wildly diverse countryside and people of Brazil. Rheingantz’s paintings focus on the geometry of the landscape, highlighting elements such as a fence, a house, or an awning. She pays special attention to the edges of her paintings, which are highlighted through the use of irregularly applied paint, thin lines, or lateral edges painted in contrasting colors. Adrián Villar Rojas, Argentina Villar Rojas’s representational work is a message about the fate of the planet. His material of choice: clay, one of the most ancient of art materials. Using a potter’s wheel, Villar Rojas creates enormous vases that look like vessels from ancient times. The difference is those vessels that have survived thousands of years were fired in an oven, making the clay hard. Villar Rojas takes it in a more tragic direction: Nothing he makes is fired, so all of it is doomed to disintegrate in a kind of ironic pessimism. His large-scale works embody his interest in ecosystems, decay, and man’s interference in nature—themes inspired by his childhood spent in Rosario, Argentina. One of Villar Rojas’s most prominent works was a commission for the High Line in New York. For his installation, The Evolution of God, Villar Rojas chose to use organic matter for its propensity to crack, decay, and change shape over the seasons.
clockwise from above: villar rojas; a detail from fantasma; the eternal butterflies, 2010; planetarium, 2015; fantasma, 2015
He created the sculptures at the site, which itself changed over the months that he worked. He used clay and cement as the main structural materials in large cubes, then added elements like seeds and vegetable matter strategically placed to sprout from within the sculptures themselves. The materials were mixed in wooden boxes, the supports removed once the sculptures dried. Villar Rojas also incorporated synthetic components such as old sneakers, shirts, and even an iPod to add a human element to the artwork—a commentary on our complex relationship with the natural world. Villar Rojas, 35, lives and works in Rosario. His most recent solo exhibition, Fantasma, runs at Moderna Museet in Stockholm through October 25. ◗

L’Atelier. It’s the French term for workshop or studio, particularly of an artist or designer working with apprentices to produce works of fine or decorative art. The word conjures images of haute design, masterful craftsmanship, and exquisite quality. Of course, that’s exactly what the developers of a new boutique condominium development in Miami Beach had in mind when they named it—and enlisted a top team of talent to create it. Located on a beautiful stretch of the Atlantic in the heart of bustling North Beach, L’Atelier—a sculptural 20-story structure—promises to stand as a shining jewel in the crown of new developments emerging on the beach. The project will combine stunning form by the Miamibased international architecture firm Revuelta, engaging gardens and grounds by landscape superstar Enzo Enea, and timelessly beautiful interiors by design impresario Holly Hunt.

this page: floor-to-ceiling glass separates the living space from the private balconies. opposite page: the gorgeous double-height lobby (top); the clean lines of l’atelier (bottom)
Inspired by the geometry and dramatic swooping lines of the historic hotel that once thrived on the site, L’Atelier’s spectacular new architecture will recall the best of Miami Beach’s mid-century modern design. At the same time, the layout, extraordinary finishes, and fine furnishings of the public spaces and residences inside will bring a new dimension to Miami modernism. L’Atelier’s porte cochere and street-level retail shops will be housed in the preserved historic portion of the complex— the former Bombay Hotel (later known as the Golden Sands). Designed by Norman M. Giller in 1951, the Bombay Hotel was central to Miami Beach’s high-life scene of the time. These spaces will ease into the dramatic double-height lobby, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the endless blue waters of the ocean. Here, the new structure begins— and Hunt will set an understated yet glamorous tone with luxe materials and a mix of classic modern and custom furnishings and accents. Since establishing her first showroom in Chicago more than 30 years ago, Hunt has been recognized as a leader in topquality residential furnishings, accessories, and finishes. Culling the crème de la crème of designers from around the globe— 64

including contemporary masters like Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Ralph Rucci, John Hutton, and Christian Astuguevieille—Hunt exclusively represents their work in her showrooms across America and internationally in London and Brazil. “Our designs always have the common thread of quality, classic lines, and generous scale and proportions—they are more tailored than frilly, timeless, on trend but not trendy, and a little eccentric,” says Hunt of her approach to interior design. Citing the work of mid-century French masters Jean-Michel Frank and Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and American designer Karl Springer as particularly influential touchstones that shape her point of view, she says there’s a cleanliness and simplicity to their work that enables it to stand the test of time. Given the international vantage point that influences her aesthetic, it isn’t surprising that she and her team would bring interior design to an entirely new level here. All-white spaces, characteristic of Miami Beach interiors, mix with honed marble and nickel accents, infusing the lobby with rich character; while a sumptuous custom sofa exclusive to L’Atelier and Jett lounge chairs of her own design will anchor a seating area with panache. River Rock cocktail tables by Lorna Lee John Muller Designs and a Helios chandelier by Stefan Gulassa set an internationally inspired modern tone that consistently flows throughout the interior.
The same classic, modern aesthetic will also define other public spaces, such as the library, spa, and hammock garden. All 21 limitededition flow-through residences—from the half- and full-floor units to the double-height penthouse—will feature open layouts with 10-foot ceilings, rich materials (such as gray wood stone floors), and fine fixtures and finishes (Gaggenau appliances and Poliform cabinetry in the kitchens and white Venus marble in the baths). The lofty influences that Hunt and the other stellar designers on the team have brought to L’Atelier are poised to coalesce into a masterful building that aptly reflects its name and will surely elevate the spirit of North Beach to a whole new level. The project is expected to be completed in 2017. “A guiding principal for us is to never let best get in the way of better,” says Hunt. “There’s always something pulling us forward.” ◗ For more information, visit lateliermiamibeach.com.

Dubai may have the tallest (Burj Khalifa), while Paris and New York have arguably the most famous (Eiffel Tower and Empire State Building). Seljord Watchtower Seljord, Norway Design Architect: Rintala Eggertsson Architects Year Completed: 2008 By the Numbers: 40 feet high; made of 100% wood Form and Function: For centuries, locals have spread the myth of a sea creature, Selma, residing in beautiful Lake Seljord. The city decided to build a watchtower from which curious tourists could truly appreciate the beauty of Selma’s home and its surroundings. Located at the southwest end of the lake, the watchtower is the main element of a project that also includes three smaller installations at the mid and southeast points of the lake. The goal was to anchor manmade installations to the landscape without dominating it. Good to Know: Before taking in the view from the top, bird-watchers will want to stop at the lower-level viewing platform, which faces a major nesting area in the trees.

JURMALA OBSERVATION TOWER Jurmala, Latvia Design Architect: ARHIS Year Completed: 2010 By the Numbers: 110 feet high; 12 viewing balconies Form and Function: Originally planned to be erected in nearby Raga Kapa Nature Park in 2005, the city decided later to move the tower to Dzintaru Mezaparks. Architect Arnis Kleinbergs adjusted his design accordingly—making some changes to the color and dimensions to fit the new environment—and the tower finally opened in 2010. Kleinbergs’ heavy use of wood makes the tower barely distinguishable from the trees at a distance, the slim design blending seamlessly into the landscape. And the use of metal grates at each landing allows climbers to see trees all around, including beneath them, as they ascend. At the highest observation platform, views extend beyond the treetops and the Baltic Sea, all the way to the capital city of Riga, 30 miles away. Good to Know: If you’re thinking of visiting, plan on making a day of it (and bring the kids). The tower is located in Dzintaru Mezaparks, a 32-acre mega-park set among 200-year-old pine tree forests. The park contains one of the most progressive playgrounds in Eastern Europe, an inlineskating track, a skateboard arena, a streetball field, and cafés. Many of the facilities are connected by raised wooden paths to reduce the impact of foot traffic on the natural grounds. 68

ATOMIUM Brussels, Belgium Design Architects: André and Jean Polak Year Completed: 1958 By the Numbers: 335 feet high; 9 spheres, each 60 feet in diameter; 5,511,557 pounds; 600,000 visitors a year Form and Function: Atomium was modeled after a basic unit of iron (which comprises 9 atoms), as a testament to the culture of scientific progress prevalent in the world at the time. Engineered by André Waterkeyn and originally built as a temporary monument for Expo 58, the tower and its panoramic view became so popular that the city decided to make it a permanent landmark. In addition to the observation sphere on level 7, Atomium houses permanent and temporary exhibitions, a restaurant, and a Kid’s Sphere offering workshops. Good to Know: The structure was built to be flexible in order to withstand heavy winds, so don’t panic if you feel it move.

MURTURM NATURE OBSERVATION TOWER Gosdorf, Austria Design Architect: Terrain Year Completed: 2010 By the Numbers: 89 feet high; 168 steps Form and Function: Rising from the banks of the River Mur, Murturm’s basic form is a double helix, twisting through the trees and creating a unique spatial atmosphere. While the view from the top is undoubtedly spectacular, Murturm is more about the journey than the destination. As visitors ascend, they pass through the various levels of the floodplain forest landscape—experiencing different sections of ecological forest with rich vegetation and fauna—before a separate staircase leads them back down into the wilderness of the European Green Belt nature preserve below. Good to Know: Architects Klaus Loenhart and Christoph Mayr got their inspiration for Murturm’s double helix from the staircase at the nearby Graz Castle, built in 1500. 70

SKYPARK OBSERVATION TOWER Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Design Architect: Moshe Safdie Year Completed: 2010 By the Numbers: 656 feet high; 107,000 square feet (read: large enough to fit 4.5 A380 jumbo jets); 250 trees and 650 plants Form and Function: SkyPark is the crown jewel of the 10 millionsquare-foot urban district Marina Bay Sands, designed by Safdie, which includes: three hotel towers, a casino, a convention center, two theaters, an event plaza, nightclubs, ArtScience Museum, an infinity pool, restaurants, jogging paths, and public gardens and art. The SkyPark deck itself sits atop the property, spanning the three towers like a giant surfboard in the sky. Good to Know: Everyone is welcome to enjoy the panoramic view and dine in the sky. But if you want to cool off in the breathtaking 15,000-square-foot infinity pool in the clouds, get a room—it’s open to hotel guests only. 72

SKYRISE Miami, United States Design Architect: Arquitectonica Year Completed: TBD (updates at skyrisemiami.com) By the Numbers: 1,000 feet high; 40-mile views; 300,000 tons of steel Form and Function: Last December, voters approved the $430 million project, which is being developed by Jeff Berkowitz. If all goes according to plan, the city will soon see its tallest building yet, on the shore of Biscayne Bay, offering unparalleled views of the city. But SkyRise has a patriotic purpose as well: Designed to clearly face the Caribbean and South America, the tower is meant to welcome visitors from the south to Miami—“an abstract version of the Statue of Liberty,” according to the developers. Good to Know: Plans also call for a swanky nightclub, a restaurant, and a ballroom. Looking for something a little more adventurous? An on-site attraction called Sky Plunge will let visitors jump from the tower bungee-style—or free-fall 650 feet at 95 mph in an amusement park–like ride called Sky Drop.

The always-witty potter, designer, and author talks about what inspires him in the world of design.
ONE: What does “good design” mean to you? JA: Good design looks like it should just be that way. It looks like it was uncovered rather than created. And it makes you feel even more glamorous than you already are. ONE: What surprises you today in the area of design? JA: That people still think there are rules. We live in an anything-goes world where people mix prices, styles, and eras, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Love what you love unapologetically. ONE: You’ve moved from pottery to pillows to sofas—and even design men’s accessories now. Is there anything you haven’t yet touched that you would like to? JA: I’d love to design a car, inside and out. ONE: What top three qualities do you think make a good designer? JA: Patience, an eye for silhouette and proportion, and an inability to successfully do anything else in life. ONE: Do you have a favorite artist? JA: Right now, it’s Ed Paschke.
En Bon E’tat, 1985, Ed Paschke
ONE: Which city do you find the most inspiring? JA: New York is the most stimulating and creative city on Earth. There is inspiration around every corner. I grew up in a tiny farm town, but New York has made me me. ONE: What’s your favorite piece in your home? JA: My new Aries table. It’s a pared-down interpretation of the classic ram’s head table but done in purple Lucite. It makes me feel like an eccentric glamourpuss. ONE: If you were to make up your own job title for yourself, what would it be? JA: Call me anything. But call me “impossibly young and handsome” and I’ll like that even better.
