THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING:
Teleflora is all about offering customers two gifts in one: handcrafted bouquets in keepsake containers. So, when designing vases, bowls, pitchers, mugs, and more, we keep second use in mind, especially at Christmastime! Help customers deck the halls year after year!
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON INSPIRING CUSTOMERS IN YOUR SHOP WITH YOUR CONTAINERS’ SECOND USE:
LIGHT IT UP
Let your light shine through with transparent containers, mosaics, and cut-outs. Try popping in a yuletide-scented candle or even a batterypowered flickering LED votive.

SPRUCE UP YOUR SLEIGH
Fill Santa’s sleigh with fragrant greens, cinnamon-scented pinecones, or both, for sweet smells all season long! Add a few sprigs of berries for a pop of color.

MIKE HOLLENBECK, FLORAL ARTISTRY, LEWISTON, IDHow do you stay top of mind with customers during a major holiday season when business are competing for attention?
Social media is a great way maximize exposure with local customers. We feature bouquet offerings to show what we have on hand and to drive last minute purchases. Facebook works great for our shop, but we’re expanding on Instagram knowing it’s an area of opportunity. We post 3x per week to stay connected to our followers and then increase to 3-5x per week during holiday periods. We also purchase Google ads to reach customers that aren’t on social media.
In addition, we invested in a photobooth backdrop kit in order to create better images with cleaner backgrounds that highlight our arrangements beautifully. It’s a small investment, but has really improved our overall content while driving higher engagement.
Lastly, we take advantage of the holiday email marketing templates from Teleflora. They help us push reminder messaging to our email database to ensure customers remember to place orders earlier.
How do you prepare for seasonal staffing in order to maximize business?
This is another area where social media has helped. We create dedicated posts on social to help recruit seasonal talent. In addition, we’ve found that connecting with youth and sports clubs that usually fundraising for their programs has been a positive way to stay connected to the community. We donate to their fundraisers in exchange for their time with seasonal staffing needs. Youth are the future of the floral industry so by creating this synergy, we help instill a sense of value in the community.
How are you addressing inflation and labor shortages and how has that impacted your business?
When invoices come in, review the itemized charges and know your margins. Proper markups by type of inventory are essential to maintaining profit and cost of business.
Adjust prices weekly if you need to and don’t be afraid of strict delivery policies. For example, for all re-deliveries, we only allow them to go out on the next available route to save on costs and we let customers know what’s feasible.
We also offer priority deliveries for additional fees. This helps address a rising generation that’s accustomed to an on-demand approach so by providing this service, we attract those customers without sacrificing cost of business.
Regarding labor shortages, we’ve found success tapping into the Department of Labor Apprentice Program, available nationally. We created an apprentice program through the state that allows us to offer new employees a paid apprenticeship where they learn design techniques preparing them for certification needs. As an employer, we can apply for grants to help subsidize the cost of training while coaching up and coming talent.
TELEFLORA’S FESTIVE
A SIMPLE 6-STEP DESIGN TUTORIAL
Year after year, holiday trees remain one of the best-selling Christmas bouquets on Teleflora’s website.
This year, we again partnered with Education Specialist and Owner of Farrell’s Florist, Tim Farrell AIFD, AAF, PFCI, to create a simple stepby-step guide on designing the premium version of the projected 2022 bestseller, Teleflora’s Festive Snowflake Tree bouquet.
Start by placing a 1/3 block of fully saturated floral foam in the container. Place your first stem of oregonia in the center of the design making sure it establishes a straight and vertical line.
Continue to add additional stems of oregonia to create the conical form of the miniature tree. Carefully insert stems into a radial pattern that closely resembles the branch structure of an actual tree.
Cut apart a stem of cedar and place the clippings throughout the tree to add textural interest and a wonderful holiday fragrance to the composition.

Evenly disperse the blooms of the red spray roses throughout the design.
Place the green spray chrysanthemums through the design and fill in the largest remaining gaps with the clusters of white gypsophilia.
Add the frosted pine cones, an additional element of interest, and finish the tree with accents of red berry sprays.
