Overthelasttwoyears,aglobalpandemichasmadeonlineclassesthenorm. ChangebegantohappenwhentheFall2021semesterstartedandin-person classesreturned.Forsome,itwastheirfirsttimeoncampusandnotstaring atascreen.Forothers,itwasareturntosomethingfamiliar.Asmanyreturn tocampus,weareseeingnewfacesandmeetingnewpeople.
Forthe13theditionofIMPACT,wewantedtofocusonthepeoplethatmake PalomarCollege,whichincludestudents,athletes,professors,staff,and coaches.Thosefeaturedhereshowthedifferenttypesofpeoplewhoarea partofPalomar,andtelltheirstories.TheIMPACTteamhasbeenworking tobringyouthesestories.
ThestudentsandstaffarewhatmakePalomarCollegewhatitis,andweat IMPACTwanttohighlightthesepeople.

Anaveragedayforher startsat5a.m.,andshe usuallydoesnâtreturn homeuntilitâsdark outside.Soloriosaidthat thelabhasbeenhectic withthestudentsrushing tocompletetheir designs,butitâsalsoaveryfocusedand collaborativeenvironment.Atthelong tablessurroundedbydressformsand sewingmachines,youâdbeabletosee herintheafternoonworkingon colorfulgarmentswhilesharingtips withherclassmates.
Thisisherlastsemesterafterfour yearsatPalomarCollege,andshe hopestotransfertotheFashion InstituteofTechnologyinNewYorkor theIstitutoMarangoniinParisor London.Thisfieldisnâtthemost secure,anditexplainswhyoneof Solorioâsproudestmomentshasbeen herfull-timededicationtofashion.
âIfeellikethiswasahardthingtoget intoatfirstâŚbecauseIâmalwaysthat personwhereitneedstobesafeandI havetomakemoney,âsaidSolorio. However,shefeelsthatthisfieldhas openedheruptonumerous opportunitiesandworkingonher collectionhasallowedhertolearn usefulskills.
AlthoughSolorioworksinhealthcare, herultimateaspirationistobecomea

Comingtocampus wasnâtalwaysan option.WhenSoloriofirststartedher classes,shelovedcomingtoschool andexperiencingthe(essential)handsonsideofdesigning.Thenthe pandemichit.
Sinceeverythinghadtobe donefromhome,she expressedthatitwashard enoughtodelayher learningprocess.Shesaid thattheteachershavebeen flexibleandwereableto catchthestudentsup,but sheacknowledgedthat âthereâsalwaysgoingtobe challengesinthefashion industryjustbecauseitâs notsomethingthatâssafe.â

ByChristopherGallegosDr.LisetteOrdoricaLasaterhaschangedmany livesinonlyafewyearsatPalomarCollege whereherowncollegecareerstarted.Sheisthe daughterofMexicanimmigrantsandafirstgenerationcollegestudent.AfterattendingPalomar, shewenttoCaliforniaStateUniversityofSan Marcostogetherbachelorâsdegreeandthenearned hermasterâsandPh.D.degreesattheUniversityof CaliforniaRiverside.
Lasateristheyoungestofsixchildrenandgrewup inSanJose,California,whereherfamilymigratedin the1960s.Lifewasnâteasyforherandherfamily, butthatdidnâtstopherfrommakingachange.
âMydad workedinafactory,andmymomstayedhome andtookcareofus,âLasatersaid.âMychildhood definitelyhadalotoffinancialchallenges,wewerenot wealthypeople,butmyparentsjustworkedsohardto createareallysafehomeforus.Theyverystrongly believedineducationandthepowerforeducationfor oneself,andoneâscommunity.â
Lasaterdidnâtmindthatherparentswerestrictabout schoolandeducation.Whilesheneverreallylikedsports, shefellinlovewithreading.Growingup,alibraryof bookswasalwayspresentatherhome.Whenherolder siblingsmovedoutwhileshewasstillyoung,theylefta lotofbooksforher.Shewouldreadfordayandnight.
âButIneverreadanybooksthatwereaboutpeoplelike me,orpeoplelikemyfamilyandcommunity,âshesaid. âIftherewaseveraLatinocharacteritwasalwaysaside character,theywereneverthefocusofthestory.â
ThelackofdiversityinclassicAmericannovelslike âLittleHouseonThePrairieâcarriedonintoher educationandhelpedherbecomethepersonsheistoday. ItwasnâtuntilattendingPalomarCollegewhereshetook aChicanostudiesclassthatsherealizedChicano literaturewasactuallyoutthere.âWhenIfirst encountereditwassoshockinganditcompletelyopened upmyworld.Ithenrealizedthatwecanbethesubjectof astory,âshesaid.
Althoughittookhersolongin herlifetorealizethatLatino peopleandcommunitiescould bethemainpieceofastory,she thoughtitwasablessingin disguise.Chicanoliteraturewas almostnonexistenttoLasater beforegettingtoPalomar College.âItbecamemymission tobecomeaneducator,andto exposestudentstothepowerof Chicano/Latinoliteratureand alongwiththatjustthepowerof writing,âLasatersaid.
CalebBocanegra,aformer studentofLasater,thinksthat peopleshouldknowhow passionatesheisabouthelping othersandmakingpeoplefeel represented.âSheismiles beyondtheaverageprofessor andreallytakestheeffortto createaverypersonal experience,âBocanegrasaidin aninterviewonInstagram.

âLasaterisoneofthemostkind-hearted,warmpeopleat PalomarCollege,âDylanDavidsonsaidinanemail interview,whoisthePrideCenterAssistantatPalomar. âSheisafantasticallytoallminoritygroupsandmakes surethateveryoneistreatedequally.Iâveneverhadthe privilegeoftakingoneofherclasses,butshehastaughtme alotduringourtime,andIcanonlyimaginethatshe wouldteachstudentsthesameasshetaughtme,withan openmind,heart,andspirit.â
LifewasnâtalwaysasmoothsailingforLasater.Whenshe startedheracademicjourneyatPalomar,herdreamwasto becomeaneducator,butdeepdownsheknewshewanted tobeaprofessor.Becauseshewasattendingacommunity college,shethoughtthatdreamwastoobigandfar.
âIdidnâtreallyknowhowtobeagoodstudent,Ididnât havegreatstudyskills,IevenstruggledinmyEnglish classessometimes,âLasatersaid.âIrarelysawacounselor,
Ireallystruggledwithmathandnevergothelp,neverwent toofficehours,solearninghowtobeaneffectivestudent wasanotherchallenge.â
Whenshewasgoingthroughthetoughtimesduringher educationaljourney,hermomwouldseetheamountof stressandanxietythatLasaterhadandalwayssaid,âMÄła relax,relaxmÄła!âBackthen,shedidnâtliketohearthis fromhermom.âButnowthatIamolderandIrecognize everythingsheendorsedtomakeithere,andhowour challengesmayhavebeenverydifferent,andwelivedvery differentlives,âLasatersaid.âIthinkwhenshewastelling metorelaxshetrulymeanttohavefaith,andthat everythingisgoingtoworkoutandbefine.Evennow whenIfindmyselfstressingoutaboutthefuture,thatvery simpleâMÄłarelaxâissomethingthatIreturnto.â

ByHayleyLawsonItisimportanttohighlightthepeoplewhowork everydaytokeepussafeandtheirimpacton ourdailylives.Since2016,PalomarCollegePolice ChiefChrisMoorehasremainedthefaceofthe PalomarCollegePoliceDepartment.Heoutlines hiscommitmenttohisjobandstaffinhismessage availableonthePalomarCollegePolice Departmentwebsite.
âTheofficersofourdepartmentrepresentour diversityoncampus,youknow,weâreprobably over50%Latino/Latinadominant,andsoIâmvery proudofthatbecauseitrepresentsthecollege,andI thinkpeopleshouldknowthat,âChiefMooresaid inanafternooninterviewinthePCPD.

Montesoffered astronghandshakeandwelcomesmeinto aconferenceroom,locatedwithinthePalomarCollege PoliceDepartment.Theroomfits10to12tableswitha chairateachoneandapodiumatthefront.Palomar proceduresandpoliceprotocolposterscoverthewalls.
MontesgrewupintheOceanside/Carlsbadareawherehe wasbornatTri-CityMedicalCenterandattendedthe CarlsbadUnifiedSchoolDistrictsystemuntil2005when hegraduatedfromCarlsbadHighSchool.Hegrewupwith histwoyoungersistersandparentsinasmallhomeand recallsfondmemoriesofhispetchihuahua.Hechuckled asherecalledthetimehebroughtthedogtoschoolfor showandtell.
âItwasaveryspecialdog,âhesaidsmiling,almostasifhe waswatchingthememoriesplayinhishead.
Rightafterhighschool,Montesbeganhisjourneywith PalomarCollegeatage18whenhefirstenrolledinclasses andremainedunsureofexactlywhathewantedtopursue. HefoundhimselfinProfessorBarrettâscriminaljustice classandbecamemoreinterestedinthetopicwithevery classhetook.HerecallsProfessorPeterson,another
criminaljusticeprofessor,beinganinfluentialfigureinthe earlystepsofhiscareer.
âAndthenIrememberonetime,um,Mr,Barrettsaidthat PalomarCollegepolicewashiringfordispatch,andI thoughtyeahokaywell,thatwasprobablythethird semesterIwashere,âMontesshrugged.âSoIthoughtwhy not.âHeappliedforthejobshortlyafter.
Adispatchjobentailsconnectingandtransferringcalls fromstudents,professors,andvisitorstothecorrect location.Whetheritbeanemergencyorevenjustaperson lookingforacertainclassroomorbuildingoncampus. Monteswaitedoversevenmonthsbeforehereceivedacall fromthedispatchcoordinator.
HerecallshisdaysofworkingatBoomersinVistaasa kitchenmanagerandatDiscountTire,nowknownas AmericaâsTire.âIrememberIwascomingoutofDiscount Tire,itwasaFriday,whenIseemyphonestartedringing soIpickedupand,um,itwasthedispatchcoordinator whowascallingmeâŚsoyeahIwas18whenIstarted workinghere.â
DuringhistimeatPalomar,Monteswasable toobtainhisassociateâsdegreeinCriminal JusticeandwouldlatertransfertoSanDiego StateUniversitytocompletehisbachelorâs degreeinthesamemajor.AtSDSU,Montessecuredan internshipthatgavehimreal-world,federal-level experiencewiththeU.S.Marshall.
âIwasassignedwiththefugitivetaskforce,whichwas prettyinteresting.Wewouldgototheborder,sometimes evencrossthebordertopickupthewantedperson,and thentheofficersfromherewouldcommunicatewith officersinMexico,âMontesrecalledhisexperiences workinginthatenvironmentatage24.
BeforehegraduatedfromSanDiegoState,Monteswas offeredafull-timepositionasacommunityserviceofficer, orCSO,atPalomarCollegeandhasworkedforthe departmentsincehewas18yearsold:fiveyearson dispatch,sevenasaCSO,andthelasttwotothreeyearsas areservepoliceofficer.
Montesâlistofaccomplishmentsdoesnâtstopthere.He recentlycompletedPalomarCollegeâsPoliceAcademy program,consistingoftrainingincriminallaws,searchand seizurelaws,drivingtacticsandeverythinginbetween.He explainstherigorousscheduleofwakingupatdawn, preparingfortheacademyandbeinginformationby6a.m.
âSaturdayswereverylongdays,from5to5,âMontessaid.
ThePoliceAcademypridesitselfoncreating âProfessionalismbyTrainingâandoffersathree-module coursethatpreparestraineestoentertheworkforce. Montes,apre-existingemployeeofthepolicedepartment, gainedfirsthandexperienceasasadispatchforthePCPD beforebeinghiredonasanofficer.
OfficerGerardPerez,anotherPalomarPoliceAcademy alumniwhograduatedin1989,wasthefirstofficerhiredat PalomarCollegeattheinceptionofitspolicedepartmentin 1991.Hehasworkedonanumberofcommunityoutreach eventsalongsideMontesincludingâCoffeewithaCopâ,an eventthatbeganin2016topromotethedepartmentâs ârelationship-basedpolicingâtactics.
Relationship-basedpolicing,accordingtothePCPD website,followssixkeypillars:buildingtrustand legitimacy,policyandoversight,technologyandsocial media,communitypolicingandcrimereduction,training andeducation,andofficerwellnessandsafety.

Withcampussafetybeingoftheutmostconcern,thePCPD isresponsibleforprotectingandservingstudents,thestaff, andtheadministration.AlthoughPalomarCollegewas establishedin1946,thePCPDcametofruitionasurprising 45yearslaterin1991.
ApolicedepartmentcanbefoundoneveryPalomar campuswith11peaceofficerspatrollingthecommunities ofeachareaânotonlyensuringthesafetyofthe community,butactivelyreducingcrimethrough communitypartnershipsandevents.
PerezrecalledthedayswhenhefirstmetMontesin1997. âHewasaveryin-tuneindividual,andsoIthoughtwehad averyspecialguyinhim,âhecontinued.âBecausehe wouldcomeandaskdoyouneedmetohelp,hewouldjust jumpinandhelp.â
PerezexplainsMontesâwillingnesstohelpinanysituation thatwaspresented,whetheritmeantchangingaflattire,to settingupequipment,toeventuallyassistingPerezin conductingfieldinterviewsinhislateryearsontheteam.
AlongwiththePCPDâsowncommunityoutreachevents, PerezandMonteshavepartneredonaspecialcollaboration withEnglishSpanishLanguageinstructorGarySosato provideopendiscussionstointernationalstudentsfromall overtheworld,includingJamaica,Hondurasand Guatemala.Inanemailinterview,Sosaexplainedhowthe programbegansixyearsagowhenPerezcontactedSosato lookforawaytocreateamoreapproachableandless stigmatizedpolicedepartmentpresenceoncampusandto educatestudentswhomaylackexposuretolaw enforcement.

WithprogramsliketheseatPalomar,policeofficersare practicingrelationship-basedpolicingandmakinga differenceinmanylivesaroundthem.Montesrecalleda studentwhomadesuchadifference.
âAcoupleyearsbacktherewasaparent,aHispanicparent, thatcameandhekindofwantedhisteenageboytofollow
thesamepath(becomeanofficer),buthe(thestudent) couldrelatemoretomebecausehehadalanguagebarrier,â hecontinued.âThatkiddidreachouttomeatonepoint, youknow,Iâmhopinghewenttherightwayandachieved hisdreams.â
WhenaskedaboutwhetherornotMontesbelievesthereis amisconceptionsurroundingtheofficersofPalomar College,hementionedthatsomepeopleoncampusgive himâlooks.âHebelievesitisbecauseoftheuniform.With policeofficersandtheirpracticesoftenunderscrutiny, MontesbelievesthatthePCPDremainstransparentin everythingtheydo.

Domingo hasplayedsoftballsinceshewas6yearsoldand âwasnotverygood,âsheremarked.Butshelovedthe environmentandvarietyofthegame.Whenshewas11,her dadpushedhertobecomeapitcher.âForsoftball,itwas kindofhardonmeasapitcherbecauseIâmsmallerand usuallypitchersaretallandfast.ButIâmsmallerandIdonât pitchasfast,soIhadtofigureoutwaystosetmyselfapart fromeveryoneelse,âsaidDomingo,whoworkedhardon beinganaccuratepitchertomakeupforhersize.

Throughoutmiddleschooland highschool,Domingoplayed travelball,butoncethehigh schoolseasonstarted,shewas outthereonvarsity.Shewasa varsityplayerinallfouryears ofherhighschoolcareerat WestviewHighSchoolnearRanchoPenasquitosandwasa startingpitcherandcenterfielder.
âSenioryearofhighschoolIwastheteamcaptain.Wedidn't gofarinCIFbuteachyearwasalwaysafunexperience,â shesaid.
Afterhersenioryear,shecontinuedtoplaytravelball,trying tofindacollegetocommitto.Theissue,however,wasthat manyoftheschoolsinterestedinherwereontheEastCoast, andDomingowantedtostayinCalifornia.ThenPalomarâs headsoftballcoachLaceyCraftcontactedher.
CrafthasbeencoachingatPalomarsincethespringof2006 andbecametheheadcoachin2010.âAlyssacametous fromWestviewHighschoolandsheplayedonateamwhere shehadtopitch,hitandplaydefenseeveryinningofevery game,âCraftsaid.âWhenshecametoPalomar,shewasable todevelopasapitcherandrefineherskillssinceshecould focussolelyonherpitcher.â

CraftnotedthateventhoughDomingoonlystartedeight gamesherfreshmanyear,shebecametheteamâsnumberone pitcherasatruefreshman.âSheworkedreallyhardto developagreatoffspeedpitchinthefall,shehadgood commandofherpitchesandwasveryeffectiveinthecircle.â
DomingopraisedCraftfordoingsomuchfor herandtheteamâssuccess.âSheisdedicated, encouraging,andinspirational.Shepays attentiontoeverydetail,andmakessure everyoneisonthesamepage,âshesaid.âShe comestopracticewithaspecificplansothere isalwayssomethingtobeworkingon.She hasaveryhighsoftballIQ.Shealso emphasizeshowweactonandoffthefieldto positivelyrepresentPalomar.Eventhoughshe isourcoach,sheisalsosomeonewecan alwaystrustandlooktoaboutourpersonal issues.NotenoughcanbesaidaboutCoach Lacey,butsheisoneofthebestcoachesI've everhad.â
Palomarâssoftballteamhasarichhistory. FormerHeadCoachandcurrentAssistant Coach,MarkEldridge,begantheprogramin 1978andledtheteamto28conference championshipsandthreestatecommunity collegetitles.UnderCraft,theteamhaswon twostatetitles,2013and2015,andwasa runner-upin2018atthestatetournament.
âIknewIwantedtoplayonadedicated,hardworking teamlikePalomar'ssoftballteam,âDomingosaid,which ledhertojoinPalomarâsprogram.
Domingoplayedherfreshmanyearin2020,andtheteam wasgoingstrongwitha16-3record.Thatseason,Domingo had13appearanceswithfivewinsandtwolossesineight starts.Pitchingalittleover48inningswithanERAof2.01, Domingowasdoingwell.However,theCOVID-19 pandemicwasjuststartingandeventuallyendedtheir seasonearly.

LikeallPalomarstudentsduringtheCOVIDlockdown, Domingowasstuckathome,takingclassesonline.She alsodidteamworkoutsoverZoom.âItwassuchaweird experience.Butwenevergaveup,inhopestogetafinal yeartoplay.Myteamhasgrownsomuch,especiallyoutof theCovidsituation.Wearealldedicatedanddrivengirls thatwanttoshowoffourtalentandskillstoplaythegame welove,âsaidDomingo.
WiththepossibilityofthelumpinDomingoâsbeing cancerous,surgeryhadtobedonetoremoveit.âButthe firstsurgerydidnâtremoveallofit,soIhadtogoinagain likefivedayslater.âAftertwosurgeries,Domingohadto takeafewweeksofffromsoftballtorecover.
âIwaskindoflikestressedoutbecausethisismythird yearanditâsmylastfinalyeartoplaysoftballhere.â DomingoismajoringinNursingandplanstotransferafter thissemesterwithplansoneitherattendingCalStateSan MarcosorSanDiegoStateUniversity.Hergoalistowork asanoutpatient.
âRecoveryisgoingverysmoothlyandIamslowlygetting backintocompetitiveactivity.Iamextremelythankfulmy tumorscarecamebackbenign.âDomingocannowfocus ongettingbackintothegame.Recoveredfromhersurgery, Domingowantstofocusonherpitching.âIjustwanttobe abletohitmyspotsandbeabletoperformformyteam,â shesaid.

LegrewupintheMidwest,just outsideofAnnArbor,Michigan. Growingupinasmaller,close-knit community,ithadanimpactonher. WhenshemovedtoCaliforniaatage 13,itwasabitofacultureshock. Eventhoughmostpeopleseethe Midwestasfarmsandfields,itwas sociallyliberalandinclusive.In Michigan,sheknewallofher neighbors,andkidsinthe neighborhoodwouldgooutsideand playtogetheruntilitgotdark.Going
offandplayingontheirownwithout acareintheworld,shehadan enjoyablechildhood,fullofno worriesorresponsibilitieswhichis verydifferentfromherlifenow.
Atschool,however,shewasoneof theveryfewstudentsofEastAsian descent.HerfatherisVietnameseand hermotherisBelarusian.Withboth herparentsbeingimmigrants,itwas difficulttobesurroundedbykids whocouldnâtrelatetoher.Shedealt withracism,butshedidnâtrealizeit wasracismuntilmuchlater.
ShemovedtoRanchoBernardofive yearsagoandattendedRancho BernardoHigh,whichwasmuch morediversewithasignificantAsian population.Shehadfriendswho lookedlikeherandcouldmostly
relateto.Evenbeingaroundother Asianpeopleinhighschool,shestill feltinferiortothembecauseshe wasnâthighlyinvolvedinherown Vietnameseculture.
âIalwaysfeltreallywhitein comparisonbecauseIwasnâtsuper affluentinmyowncommunity,but therewerestillthingsweconnected on,âsaidLe.
Whileinhighschool,shewasableto startexpandingherhorizonsandgot alotofopportunitiesbasedonthe thingsshewaspassionateabout.She wasinvolvedinthecommunityatthe school,includingtheASBtobean activepartinherpeersâhighschool experience.
Lealsopaintedvariousmuralsonand offcampusbecauseartissomething Lehasalwaysbeenpassionateabout andholdsanattachmenttoallher work.Duringhersophomoreyear, herEnglishteacherrecommendedher todoaTEDTalkataneventthehigh schoolwashosting:aTEDx conference.Shedidhertalkon communityempathywhichwasabig partofthehighschoolâsdiversity.

âIrememberpeople remarkingthat everythingGabbydid wouldlookgreatoncollege applications,butGabbynevercared aboutthat.Sheparticipatedinallof theseimpactfulactivitiesbecauseshe genuinelycared.Shewantedtomake

Theyhopetochangetheoverall conversationaboutmenstruationand dismantlingthestigmasaboutit. Periodsareoftenseenasunsanitary, whichmakesyoungwomenfeel uncomfortablebeinginpublicwhen theyaregoingthroughthem.Thereis alsoalackofeducationofwhat actuallyoccurstoawomanduring menstruation,whichalsoaddstoa lackofavailabilityoffeminine products.
âTheproblemisnobetteroutsideof thehome,aspublicbathroom facilities(oftendesignedbymen)can beunfitforpurposewhenitcomesto womenandgirlsontheirperiods. Manyofusmighttakeforgrantedthe rolewhichpublicfacilitiesplayin goingaboutourday-to-daylives,but noteveryoneisfortunateenoughto experiencethisâluxuryâ,âaccording toanarticleontheInternational PlannedParenthoodFederation.
organizationcalledFarawayFriends wheretheysetupdonationdrivesfor menstrualproductsthatwerethen donatedtoUganda,whichallowed theclubtohaveaglobalimpact,not justalocalone.Sincetheyknew peoplewhoattendedPowayHighand Mt.CarmelHigh,LeandWuspread theirworktootherschoolsandwere abletopersuadethose administrationstostarttheclubs thereaswell.Allthreeschoolshave clubsthatcontinuetowork independently.

âItâschallengingbutifyoustudyandyouâreputtingthe effortin,youcandoit.ItâsalotofworkanddedicationâŚI justhatewhenpeoplesaytheycanâtbecausetheythink theyârenotsmartenough.Itâslike,youneverknowwhat youcandountilyoutryit.â

Effortsarebeingmade toencourageequality,diversityandinclusion intheworkplace.HarveyMuddCollegeinClaremont, Calif.,forexample,increaseditsfemalegraduationrate from12to40percentinaspanoffiveyears.Thecollege madeadjustmentstoitscomputingcoursesandbrought studentstotheGraceHopperCelebrationofWomenin Computingconference.
WomeninSTEMisamovementthatwasfoundedin 2017attheUniversityofChicagolabschools.
Consistingof78chaptersaroundtheworldand1,400 members,itsmissionistoadvocateforgenderequality inSTEMandprovidemorelearningopportunitiesfor youngwomen.TheNationalGirlsCollaborativeProject isalargenetworkoforganizationsthatareseekingto educateandinspireyoungwomentopursuecareersin STEM.Itprovidestoolsandresourcestostrengthen developingprograms.
âSohowcanyouadvocateforawomanifyouârenot aware,right,sojustbringingattentiontoit,you know,andmakingmenouralliesandnotfocusingon whattheyâredoingwrongbutfocusingonwhattheyâre doingrightandmakingthemouroutlets,âsaysEhle, whoalsorunsPalomarâsWomeninSTEMNetworkin associationwiththeSTEMcoreprogram.Ithosts workshopsandguestpresentationsandgivesstudentsa chancetosharetheirexperienceswithoneanother.
Outsideofworkandschool,Rappaportisapublished musician.Sheâsbeenwritingmusicsincefirstgradeand hasnointentionsofstopping.ShereleasedherfirstEP album,âLostAgainâin2019.âIwrotemostofthesongs whenIwaslike,14,soitâsalittlefunnylisteningto themnowâŚIwasactuallysupposedtorecordanother onerightbeforeCOVIDhit.Andthenatthispoint,now Iâmlike,IdonâtevenlikethosesongsanymorebecauseI wrotethoseyearsago.â
Shehopestowritemoremusicsoon,butfindingthe timeisachallengewithherbusyschedule.âSpecifically lastsemester,whichwasthe20-unitsemesterbecauseI hadlikezerotimeandIhadtoturndownmodeling opportunitiesandmusicopportunities.Andthatwas reallydifficultbecauseitâslike,musichasbeenmy passionmywholelife.â
WhenIaskedaboutherproudest accomplishments,sheletoutabigsighand jokinglyreplied.âStayingsane.âAfterreflecting foramoment,sheadded,âIknowIâveworked reallyhardinspiteoffactorsthatareagainstme. AndIâmproudofcontinuingandnotlettingthat determefromthefieldthatIâminâŚIâmproud thatIhavesomuchonmyplateandIâvemanaged tobesuccessfulinmostofthem.â

OnSept.14,2010,LeighMarshallwashiredtobe Palomarâswomen'sbasketballteamâs11thheadcoach withonlytwomonthsawayfromtheseasontostart.
MarshallhasearnedanassociateâsdegreefromOrange CoastCollege,abachelorâsinkinesiologyfromCalState Fullertonandamasterâsinkinesiologywithanemphasis incoachingfromCalStateLongBeach.Beforeshewasa coach,Marshallfeltlikeanonlychildbecauseherolder sisterwas11yearsolderandhadbeenoutofthehouse duringherchildhood.Beinginvolvedwithsportsata youngagemadeanimpactonherandkeptherbusy.
âCominghomebymyselfafterschoolandthingslike that,youknow,andthenendedupjustgettingwiththe kidsintheneighborhood,gointotheparkplayingsports, andIhadagreatchildhood,âsaidMarshall.
Basketball wasintroducedtoMarshallwhenshepicked upaballandstartedshootingatayoungageandstarted playingforherschoolâsteam.Shecamefromawinning culturebackhomeasaplayerandassistantcoachatCosta MesaHigh.AtOrangeCoastCollege,shewasatwo-guard player,ashootingguardandapointguard.
InhertwoyearsatOrangeCoast,Marshallâsteamhada combinedwin-lossrecordof55-15,andinhersecondyear whereshehelpedherteamwinachampionship,finishing theseason30-6.âIwantedtocontinuetogoonandbea coach,âsaidMarshall,andsheknewthatsheneeded coachingexperience,whichshegotfromcoachingat OrangeCoastforfiveyearsandatElModenaHighSchool basketballfortwoyearsasaheadcoach.
âIappliedforthisjob[atPalomar]andIdidnâtevengetan interviewandsothenSeptembercomesaround,andIgeta phonecallfromthethenathleticdirectorScottCathcart andheâslike,âAreyoustillinterestedintheposition?â Marshallsaid.âOfcourseIam,youknow,socomedown here,Iâdliketotalkwithyou.Iâmthinking,youknow,I knewthejobhadopenedbackup,butIthoughtIwas goingthroughtheinterviewprocess.IthinkprettymuchI wastheonlyonethatwouldtakeitatthatlateofatime.â
Shewastoldbyalotofherclosefriendsandfamilytonot takethejobsinceitwasinitsrebuildingstages,anditwas goingtobeamess.âIknewitwasmyonechancetoget intowhereIwantedtobeandbeaheadcoach,âsaid Marshall.Sheadmittedthatherfirsttwoseasonsat Palomarwereastruggle.Withtwomonthsuntilthestartof herfirstseason,sheneededtobuildateamsincetherewas norecruitingclass.
âWefoundkidsaround.Weliterallysatinthequadand talkedtoeveryfemalestudentthatwouldwalkbyandask themiftheyplayedsportsbefore,pulledacouplekidsthat wayandendeduphavingateam,âsaidMarshall.
Inher12yearsofcoaching,Marshallhasbeennamed CaliforniaCommunityCollegeAthleticAssociation (CCCAA)CaliforniaStateCoachoftheyearin2015,2017 and2018.OnNov.19,2021,Marshallwonher200th careerwinwiththeComets.Sheknewthatwin200was comingbutwasnotexpectingitthatnight.Whenshe foundoutthatshehadwon,shewassurprisedandfeltcool aboutit.Marshallhasbeenafamiliarfacewhengoinginto theplayoffs.Shehasmadeappearancesinthesweet sixteenseventimes,eliteeightfivetimes,andonefinal fourappearance.
Marshalllikestoprepareeachteamplayerwhetheritis watchingopponentsorpreviousgamesonfilm,orlearning andpracticingcertainstylesofdefense.Shelikestokeep herheadbusybywatchingpreviousgamesonemoretime beforeshetakesofftothecourt.âIdonâtlikejusthanging out,âsaidMarshall.
BiancaLittleton,aformerCometwhoplayedunderthe wingsofMarshallandiscurrentlyPalomarâsAssistant AthleticDirector,describedcoachMarshallviaemailasa âLIONESS!!!,âbecauseofherfearlessness,courage,and empoweringleadership.LittletonplayedatPalomarfor
twoyearsfrom2012to2014whereshewaspartofthe teamthatwoncoachMarshallâsfirstPacificCoastAthletic Conferencetitle.âPlayingunderherwasoneofthebest experiencesinmylife!âsaidLittleton.âIwaspushedboth mentallyandphysically;however,tobeapartofComet historyiswhatmademyexperiencewithLeighMarshall bothfulfillingandrewardingthisday.â

âShehasalwayskeptitrealwithmeintermsofwhatIcan becomeasaplayer,âTerrezasaid.
Someteamsâsuccessisnotonlyfromallthesweatand workdoneonthecourt;itcanalsocomefromthatonefan whotakesthetimeoutoftheirdaytosupporttheteam: SusanLopez,Marshallâsmother.âIamsoproudbecause shehasworkedsohardatthePalomarprogramandearned everyaccoladethroughsweatandthathardwork,also said,Icouldnâtbeanyprouderofthecaringwomanshe hasbecome.IfIcouldhavepickedachild,itwouldbe her,âsaidLopez.
âShewasnâtabigsportsfan.Iloveditherandmydad cametoeverysinglegamelikestilltothisday,theydrive outhereanhourtocometoeveryhomegame.Theyâre hugelikesupportersandfans,âsaidMarshall.
OutsideoftheDome,Marshallcoachesa16Uboysâ basketballteaminthesameprogramherassistantcoach directs:theCoastalEliteclub.Shehasbeenworkingwith thesamegroupofboyssincetheywereeightyearsold.

âShecaresdeeplyforthoseshecoachesanddoeswhatever shecantohelpthembesuccessfulinallaspectsoflife,â Koreschsaid.âHerpassionforherprofessionandthose shecoachesshinesthrough.â
Marshallsometimesgoesbackhometovisitherfamily andfriendsinCostaMesa.Shespendsmostofhertime withhertwodogs:Harley,a9-year-oldRottweiler,and BullythePitbull,whowasarescuefromThePits,an animalrescueinSanDiego.Shewillbegettingmarriedin Junewithherpartnerofnineyearswhoisalsoa basketballcoach.
âIthinkalotoftimesitâseasytogiveinandquitwhen thingsgetdifficultandyouârerightabouttosucceed,â Marshallsaid.âYouârerightabouttohitthatturningpoint. SoIwouldjustsaylike,keepgettingbackupandkeep pushingforward.â P

Opportunitiesarerare,sohemadethem limitless.
ByDezareLozanoIntheearly2000s,opportunitiesstartedtoarisefor educationalleadersacrosstheNorthCountyregion.
MarkEvilsizer,aTrusteefortheGoverningBoardat PalomarCollege,wasoneoftheleadersdestinedtomake achangeforbettereducation.Hewasresponsibleforthe manychangesthatPalomarwentthrough.
Now,Evilsizerpreferstostayhomewithhiswifeandcat, planningfortravelingtripstocelebratehisretirement.
After20yearsofworkingasaGoverningBoardTrustee, heisreadytopassthebaton,bothatPalomarandthe non-profitorganizationhehelpedfound:Encuentros.
In2003,TheNorthCountyTimessentoutinvitationsto superintendentsfromcolleges,K-12districts,andmore.The invitationwastoameetingtodiscusseducationalmattersinthe NorthCountydistrict.Evilsizertookuptheofferandattended themeetinglocatedinOceanside.
"Thetopicofconversationwasthehighdropoutrateamong Latinostudents,"saidEvilsizer,whoreflectedaswebothstared atourlaptopscreensviaZoom.Hedressedcomfortably,his clothingmirroringhisrelaxedpostureandnostalgicmood. Evilsizersmiledtheentiretimehespoke,rememberingthe eventthatchangedhislifeforthebetter19yearsago.
WhilediscussingtherateofLatinossufferingintheireducation, Evilsizerandhiscolleaguesdecideditwastimetomakea change.âWesaid,âYouknowwhat?Thatâsjustatrainwreck waitingtohappen,andoursocietywillnotbenefitbynot engagingallofourcitizensingettingagoodeducationand preventingthemfromdroppingoutofeithermiddleschoolor highschool.ââ
Themeetingwasfilledwithharmoniousagreements.Itwas thenthatthenonprofitEncuentroswasborn,avolunteer-driven groupthatwouldchangethelivesofLatinomalesforthebest. Theirgoal:âTocreateLatinoleadersthrougheducation.â
Thiswouldboosttheeducationgamebythehundreds.Latino studentsdonothavemuchsuccessinCaliforniastatistically,but thatdoesnâtmakethemanylessvaluablethantheyare. Unfortunately,âThenationaldropoutrateforLatinostudentsis substantiallyhigherthanforothersâŚâaccordingtotheNational CenterforEducationStatistics2002.Evilsizerknewhehadto workwiththestudentstohavethembecomesuccessful.
Latinoswerereferredandallowedtocontinuetheir education,startingatPalomarCollege,andworkingtheir wayuptoaUCorotherfour-yearinstitutes.With campusesreopeningtoaccommodatein-personclasses,it isaperfecttimetopromotenewbeginnings.
âThisyear,weârebackintoplanningonhavingaTeachers AcademyatCalStateSanMarcosandhavingEngineering AcademiesatbothUCSanDiegoandatCalStateSan Marcos,âsaidEvilsizer.âWeâregoingtohavethree academiesthisyear,maybefour,becausewewantto resurrecttheLeadershipAcademy.â
ConsideringthatbarelyafifthoftheLatinopopulationin Americadecidetocompleteafour-yeardegree,Evilsizer knewhehadsomeworktodo.LisaGarciaBedolla,a politicalscientistandLatinoscholaratBerkeley Universitysaidthatfewerthan20percentofLatinos completeafour-yeardegreeâalthoughmorethan40 percentofLatinosentersomesortofpostsecondary educationalprogram.â
ThatwasnochallengefortheEncuentrosleader.This passionforbettermentintheLatinocommunitycamefrom Evilsizerâsfluctuatingchildhood.âMydadworkedfora savingsandloaninstitutionâŚandabouteverytwoorthree yearsIandthefamilywouldmovetodifferentcitiesup anddownthestateofCalifornia,âhesaid.âIgrewup beingexposedtoalotofpoliticaldiscourseandwantingto changethestatusquoandtobemoreawareoftheneedsof people.âHemarriedhishighschoolsweetheartand bouncedaroundseveraldifferentjobsfromagasstation workertoawaiteratBobâsBigBoy.âIgotajobatTWA washingdishesandIworkedatachemicalplant.â
Eventually,in1973duringcollege,Evilsizerlandedhis
firstlong-termjobatNorthropGrumman,anaerospace companyinHawthorne,California.Itwasperfectsince Northropcouldhelppayfortuitionexpensesandclasses. However,therewasoneproblemfortheyoung undergraduate:Northropdidnâtacceptzoologyasoneof themajorstheywouldcover.âNorthropatthetimesaidwe donâtpayforzoologymajors,butweâllmakesurewewill payforyoureducationthough,âsaidEvilsizer.Previously, heplannedtomajorinbiology,sayingthatbeingawildlife biologistoraveterinarianwashisfirstgoal.Considering thatwasnâtgoingtohappenwithoutdrowningindebt, Evilsizerdecidedtochangepaths.
âYouhavetobetakingeitherabusinesscourseofstudy,or anengineeringcourseofstudyâŚSoItookupbusiness administrationandultimatelygotmybachelorâsdegreein businessandthenamasterâsdegreeinmanagement.â
EvilsizerfinishedwithamasterâsdegreeinManagementat ClaremontGraduateUniversityandabachelorâsdegreein BusinessattheUniversityofRedlandswhileworkingat Northrop.Hisnewprofessionalcareerwasnowinthe

EvilsizerwasworkingwiththeX-47Bdrone,an unmannedaircraftthateventuallyjoinedtheNavyto surveyareaswithoutapilot.Healsoworkedonnumerous fighterjets,commercialaircraftwork,andmuchmore fromthe1970stothe1980s.Hesighedandsmiled contagiously,shakinghishead,âYeah,computerized electromechanicalsystemsonthatthing.Itwasmore accurate,andtheyfinallythought:Youknowwhat?You provedyourpoint.â
OneofEvilsizerâsgoodfriends,PhilDiTrapani,who workedwithhimatNorthropin2005.âHeâsaverycaring person,especiallywiththeLatinocommunity,âTrapani saidoverthephone.âBut,hisworstquality?Someofhis jokesareprettybad.âTrapanilaughed.
ButNorthropwouldnâtbeEvilsizerâsmainworksource anymore.HewaslaidoffafterNorthropdecidedtoclose theplantheworkedatandmoveoutofSanDiego.Not wantingtomovetonorthernCalifornia,Evilsizerstayed andlookedaroundforjobs.Thankfully,PalomarCollege openeditsarmsout,andEvilsizergladlytookthe opportunity.
âOneofthethingsIdidwasItaughtpart-timeatPalomar College,âEvilsizersaid.âItaughtcoursesinsupervision andcoursesinthebusinessdepartment.Organizational theory,youknow,businesscommunication.Yeah,things likethat.âHeworkedforfiveyearsasapart-time instructor.Duringthattime,Evilsizernoticedhowunfairly Palomarwastreatingtheirfacultyâespeciallytheparttimers.âTheydidnothaveanyunionatPalomar,itwasa meetandconfer.Itwasreallyjustforthefull-time faculty,âhesaid.
ForPalomarCollegetobecomesuccessful,hebecame activelyengagedwiththeAmericanandCalifornia FederationofTeachers.âIandseveralothersdecidedto petitionthepart-timeinstructorsatPalomarCollegeto beginaunionforpart-timersâŚWeworkedwithawoman whowasafull-timeAFTperson.Thatkindofhelped secureavoteforaunionandthenformaUnion.â
ItwasthenthatEvilsizerâscolleagueslookeduptohim andgavehimmoreopportunitiestochangePalomarfor thebetter.âSomefacultymembersaskedme,âHey,Mark, wouldyoubeinterestedinrunningforoneofthethree
seatsthataregoingtobeopenonourgoverning
board?â...SoIjuststartedgoingtosomeoftheirmeetings. ThenIsawthattheyweremakingimportantdecisions aboutemployeesandpoliciesandfiscalmatters.SoIsaid, yeah,Icanprobablydothat.â
TheroleofaGoverningBoardmemberrequiresapassion forchangeandagoodvoice,thequalitiesEvilsizerhad. AccordingtotheTertiaryEducationandManagement, âTheGoverningBoardcanbeviewedasanimportant arenaforinstitutionalchangeandisalsoresponsiblefor qualityassurance,efficiency,andeffectiveness.â Evilsizerâscolleaguesagreed:Hewasthekeytochange.
In2002,theGoverningBoardelectedEvilsizertobecome theirTrustee,andchangesatPalomarCollegewere startingtobecomenoticeable.Therewardsofbeinga Trusteewerenothingmorethanbeingabletohearthe successstoriesofstudentsaround,andforEvilsizer,that waswhatheneededtokeepgoing.
âFromthesinglemomthatwasstruggling,youknow,who cameandstudiedforthenursingprogram,gotsupport fromaparenttowatchtheirchildsucceedintheirgoal.Or aMarineCorpsveteran,youknow,wastransitioningfrom themilitarytocivilianlifeandwantedtobecomea policemanoractuallyworkedasamilitarypoliceman.â Evilsizerâseyessparkledashespoke,excitedtorelive thosememoriesofpaststudentsandspeakoftheirchange. âSo,thereâsalotofrewardsseeingthosesuccesses.â
EvilsizerexpandedhisandPalomarCollegeâssuccessover theyears.HebecametheChairoftheGoverningBoardfor thefirsttimein2008,hehasworkedwiththeCalifornia CommunityCollegeTrusteesAssociation,andhehas workedstatewidethroughtheCommunityCollegesystem toimprovethingsindifferentcolleges.Heusedhis platformtoopenanonprofitorganizationforLatino studentsinCalifornia,goingtomeetingsattheCounty OfficeofEducationtomakenoiseoftheLatinoAdvisory Committee.
Dr.JohnHalcĂłn,aretiredProfessorandTrusteeofthe GoverningBoard,whohadworkedwithEvilizer,saidthat hewasâpatientâduringourbriefphonecall.âItendtobea littlebitmorenon-patientasheis.Usually,hewould frustrateme,but,yâknow,nineoutoftentimesheâsright. Heâsafantasticguy.âHalcĂłnsaidwithabitof nostalgia.âThereisnâtaparticularincidentor storythatstandsout[aboutEvilsizer],heâsa verywell-respectedpersonstatewide⌠Everyoneknewwhenwewereintown. Theywouldcomeandgreetus,andwe wouldgreetpeople.Heknows everybody.âEventhoughEvilsizeris fiveyearsintohisretirement,thiswillbe thelastyearofhistimeatPalomar CollegeandasaGoverningBoard Trustee.Hehastravelplansandhas startedalreadywhenhevisitedVegas inthelastcoupleofmonths.Hehas createdchangefortheworld,and nowitistimefortheworld togivebacktohim.
âItâstimetopassthebatontosomeotherperson,â Evilsizersaidaswewerefinishingourinterview.I rememberlookingathimonmyscreen,notwantinghis storytoend.However,noteverythinglastsforever,andit seemsheâsawareofthat.Hetooknotethattherewill alwaysbesomeonethereafterhim,looking overtheGoverningBoardashedid.
âItâsimportantforboardmembersto keepfirstandforemostandallof theirdeliberationsandalltheir decisionsthat,youknow,weâre theretoservetheeducational needsofourstudentsandthe needsofourcommunitiesinterms ofwhatkindsofjobstheyneed workersfor,âhesaid,noddinghis head.âItâsimportantthatwekeep thatinmindandnotgettoobogged downinunionstuffandcollective bargainingstuff.Imean,thatâsall importantbutfirstandforemost thateveryonekeepsthestudent focusandthefactthatweâre theretoserveeducational goalsIthinkthat'stheone thingIwouldurgeanyof mypredecessorstokeep inmind.â P

âIwasabitworriedgoingbackinpersonbecauseIsaw throughsocialmediathatmanyAsianswerebecoming victimsofbeingbeateninpublicforâcausingâCOVIDand bringingittoAmericaâ,shesaidwithanagonizedlookon herface.âManypeopleonlinetoowerebeingracistand beingxenophobicthroughoutthisentirepandemicsoit worriedmehavingtoattendclassesknowinghowmuch myracewasbeinghatedonforsomethingwedidnotdoor causewhilebeinghereinAmerica.â
Yeungnotonlyhadtofearforherself,butalsoforher familybecausenewscoveragehadreportedmanyAsian businessesbeingdestroyedortormentedduetotheblame. Unfortunately,anyAsianinfluencers,whopostedonsocial mediaespeciallythepopularandgrowingapp namedTikTokwaswheremostxenophobiais experienced.TheseAsianinfluencers experiencedimmensehatejustforbeing Asian,wherecommentswereblamingthe personforcausingCOVIDandsayingracial commentsabouttheirlooks.Manypeople commentedontheirentirecultureonwhat theyeatbecauseofhowdifferentitwasto Americanfood.
Inthearticle,âStopthecoronavirusstigma nowâ,theNatureResearchJournaldiscusses howpoliticianswhocontinuouslyblame Chinaforthepandemicareatfaultbecause âpandemicsleadtocommunitiesbeing stigmatized,whichiswhyweallneedto exercisemorecare.âIfwecontinueto increasethestigmabyassociatingthe

Yeungwascorrectinthesuddenchangeofhatetolovefor Asians.Manypeoplehadhoppedonthebandwagonon socialmediawhereAsianswerethecauseofawhole pandemic,butthensoonforgotaboutitoncethesituation ofthepandemicsimmereddown.Peoplethenbegan accustomingtheirlifetoonlineandfollowingdifferent trendsthatmostoriginatedfromAsia.
Onecommontrendisfashion.YeungfollowedJapanese fashionforalongtime,especiallytheirstreetwearandhow popularâharajukuâwasinJapan.Peoplebeganbecoming awareofthisandpostingitonTikTokwherepeoplebegan praisingAsiansforhowtheydressandcomparingitto Americanswheremanydidnotknowhowtodressordo fashion.ThisisthesortofpraiseAsiansweregettingnearlya yearbeforeCOVID.
Yeungwassurprisedtoseesomanypeoplelovingthe streetwearAsianswerewearing.âBecauseayearagowe weregettingthemosthatearoundtheentireworldbutnow weâregettingsomuchloveonsocialmediaâ,shesaid,âit kindabothersmethewaypeopleswitchuplikethatandthe waypeopleforgetthehatewegotandtheabusewehadto endurewhenwewerenotthecauseofthispandemic.â

ithherboldredlocks,CedarCovington poursherlifeexperiencesintoherart, creatingpiecesfullofcolorandpositive affirmations.Heavilyinspiredbynature,film,music, andR&Bandsoul,Covingtoncombinesmultiple mediumstoformhermixedmediacreations.
Beingopentomanymediums,Covingtonwillgive almostanythingatry.Sheusesanykindofpaint whetheritbewatercolor,acrylic,oil,orspraypaint. Othermediumsshehasusedincludeembroidery, linoleumblocks,papercollage,paintpens,markers, andgouache.Acrylicpaintandpapercollagesare herfavoritetoworkwithasyoucanseewhen flippingthroughpagesofherartjournal.
âIwanted thesoundwhenyouopenittocrackleand crisp.Iwantedittobeoverflowinglikeabouttoripapart andithasrippedapartmultipletimesandIhadtosuper gluethepagesbackin,âsaidCovington.
MuchofCovingtonâsartcomesfromtimesofherlifethat bringherthemostdiscomfort.Herartjournal,forone, beganafteraheartbreak.Althoughthesemomentsdocome fromuncomfortablemomentsofherlife,Covingtonseeks comfortindiscomfort.
Shealsomentionedsomeexperiencesthatremindherof herchildhoodassomeonewhogrewupwithasingle mother.âIthinkwhenyouâreafraidofsomethinglike whenIdonâtwanttowatchacertainmovie,what discomfortamIafraidisthatthatâsgoingtomakemefeel andthenpickatthatdiscomfortuntilIfigureoutwhatis actuallywrong,âCovingtonsaid.âIdonâtwanttowatcha movieaboutheartbreak.WhatdiscomfortamIavoidingto feel?Idonâtwanttofeelthefeelingofbeingheartbroken againandfeelthatfearofabandonment.Watchingamovie likeGlassCastle,amovieaboutadadwhoâsnotpresent, likewhatdiscordamItryingnottofeel?Trytofeelthat likereally,reallyfeelitandthenturnitintosomething.â
SpendingherearlyyearsoffthegridonPalomarMountain withherfamilygaveCovingtonanupbringingwherethey hadageneratorforelectricity,twomoviesonVHS,and wherehermotherchangedherdiapersbycandlelight.This lifestylehadCovingtoneagerlyturningtotheoutdoorsand toartasarelease.AfterthePoomachaFirein2007, Covingtonandherfamilylivedinapartmentsandcondos. ThePoomachaFireatPalomarMountainStatePark burneddown138homesandmorethan49,000acrestotal, accordingtoparks.ca.gov.Asalow-incomefamilymoving fromclosequarterstoclosequarters,Covingtonâsphysical spacewaslimitedbuthercreativity roamedfree.
âAsachild,Ifeltoutof controlofmy circumstances.Withthe kindofchildhoodI grewupin,thereisnot muchyoucandoabout it.Ithinkatruehobby orinterestissomethingthat takesyouawayfromrealityfor alittlebit.Andmakesyoutravel withoutactuallyhavingto leave,âsaidCovington.
Hermother,Sabrina,sharesasimilarpointofview, acknowledgingthatartwassomethingherdaughterturned to.âCedardidnothavetheeasiestchildhoodandartwas theperfectoutlet,âSabrinasaid.âLivingwithanartist makeseverydayfun.ArttrulylightsCedarupandit makesherhappyinthepurestway.â
Havingtonavigateadifficultpaternalrelationshipata youngagecausedCovingtontocometotermswithpeople inherlifeaswell.âWithmyfather,itâsjustoneofthose thingswhereIwasnâtawareofalotofthebadthingsthat happenedinmychildhood,âshesaid.âIjustknewitwas badandthenwhenIgrewupandIbecamefifteenor sixteenIbecameawareofallthebadthingsthathappened whenIwasyoungerandthatthereforeIhadtocutoffthat relationship.â
Covingtonâsreligiousupbringingalsohadherquestioning thingsshewastaughtandexperiencedgrowingup. AlthoughCovingtonsaysthatreligioncanbebeautifulasa childandgavehermoralsandvalues,shestrongly disagreedwithwhatwasbeingtaughtaboutsexualpurity.
âIamaveryconfrontationalperson.Iamnotsureifthat wasbecauseofmychildhoodorbecauseIwasalways meanttobelikethat,butIâmveryconfrontational.Idonât shyawayfromuncomfortabletopics.Iseekcomfortin
beinguncomfortable becauseIhavealwaysfelt alittleuncomfortableI think,âsaidCovington.
AsCovingtonmovedon fromCatholicschooland beganattendingacharter schoolandpublicschool,she stillrejectedthenorms.Shepointed outthatthepeoplewhoweretypically praisedwerehighachievingscholarsandathleteswhich leftheranoutcastamongstherpeersagain.
InadditiontobeingagraphicdesignstudentatPalomar, Covingtonputsherartupondisplayatgalleries,coffee shops,andsellsherartatlocalshopssuchasDayDream inEscondido.Asabusiness-mindedperson,shetriesto priceherpiecesaccordinglywhilealsomakingthemas accessibleaspossible.Covingtonhasworkedjobsoutside ofbeinganartist,butshesuggeststhateveryartistsave moneyandtakesometimeofftoactontheirinspiration.
âIthinkbeingveryantinine-to-fiveandshamingpeople forhavinganinetofiveisclassist.Peoplehavetowork, peoplehavetofeedtheirfamiliesandnoteveryonegota collegeeducation.IdoagreethatIdonâtwantanine-to-
five.WhenIwouldgointowork,Ifeltlikesomeoneputa plugintomeanddrainedallofmybatteryandwas completelydead,nofeelingsjustcompletelynumband thenifIpaintalldayIamexhaustedbutIâmenergized,â saidCovington.
Accordingtoarts.gov,itis3.6 timesaslikelyforanartisttobe self-employedascomparedto otherworkers.Although Covingtonacknowledgesthe practicalityofadayjob,itcan stiflethecreativityoftheartist. Withthis,however,comesthe backlashofhowartistswillmake aliving,butCovington discouragestheseattitudesabout artists.
âPeoplewouldalwayssayhow areyougoingtomakemoney? Thatisthenumberonequestion. Youhavetofigurethatoutthatâs important,butalsothesame peoplewhodiscourageartists frompursuingacareerinartor donâtseethepurposeortheneed foritarethesamepeoplethatconsumemusicfilm.People consumearteverysingleday,âshesaid.
Makingherartaccessibletopeopleissomethingimportant toher.However,withabusiness-mindset,sheensuresthat shereceivesthecompensationsheworkedfor.Withjust underathirdofartistsgettingcompensationfortheart, accordingtoartradarjournal.com,Covingtonseemstobe aheadofthecurve.Shealsoadmitsthatthebusinessside ofitallcanbediscouragingwhensomethingdoesnotsell, butshereassuresherselfwiththethoughtthattheright personwillseeitattherighttime.Shealsoseesthisasan areaofgrowthinherart.
âIthinkmyartrightnowisalittletooonthenoseandI wanttomakeitmoremurkyandweirder.IthinkIam transitioningintomakingartforotherpeopleintomaking artformyself.Iâmcreative,butIhaveabusinessmindset. Iâmalwaysthinkingaboutwhatpeoplewouldbuyand whatpeoplewouldwant.Theartjournalhelpedmemake stuffthatwasreallyunhingedandreallyweirdfor absolutelynoreason.Evenifnoonewouldevenwantit orlookatit,itâsforme.Istartedtorealizethatpeopledo likemyartmorewhenIdonâtthinkaboutotherpeople,â saidCovington.
AsCovingtonsaid,lettinggoofshameand peopleâsperceptionofyouiskeywhile makingarttosell.Shealsoadvises everybodytoevaluatehowyouwanttobe heardandhowtoexpressthattotheworld.
âEverybodywantstofeelheard.Whetheran introvertandextrovert,anartistandathlete, whateveryouwanttobe,everybodywantstofeelheard,â shesaid.âItdoesnâtmatterwhoyouare,evenifyounever talk.Youwanttofeelvalidatedinsomewayandtosaythat youdonâtisalieandtheminuteyourealizethatyoucan findyourpowerandrealizewhatyouwantpeopletohear fromyou.Howyouwantpeopletofeelandwhatdoyou wantthemtotakeawayfromtheirexperiencewithyou.â
WhileCovingtonistransitioningfromcreatingartfor otherpeopletocreatingartforherself,shereminisceson whatherarthasdoneforher.
âInowhavememorializedthatmoment.Nowlooking backatmyartjournal,myfirstcoupleentriesthatImade lastyeararoundMay,Iwasinsuchadifferentmindset.Itâs almostlikelisteningtoasongduringacertainperiodof timeandittakesyouback.Ireallyrememberthatmoment nowthatIamlisteningtothatsongsmellingthatscent,or eatingthatfoodorwhateveritis.Lookingatthatartislike puttingmyselfinthatmoment,âsaidCovington.
