13th Annual College Invitational Opens with Noon Registration President Huber Welcomes Speech Teams On behalf of the faculty and administration of Palomar College, I am pleased to welcome students and faculty from the high schools of San Diego, Imperial, and Riverside Counties to this thirteenth annual Palomar College Novice Inivitational Speech Tournament.

Forensics has been and will continue to be a very strong program at Palomar College. Our students in the program have always done extremely well in both state and national competition. PC Squad Places High at Tournaments; Elects officers 'The Palomar College Forensics squad received 12 awards at the recent San Fernando Valley State College Tourney. MITTIES McDONALD and DARLENE HENDRICKSON won Superior awards in Oral Interpretation. ARMANDO SAENZ was awarded a Superior in Persuasive Speaking and an Excellent in Oral Interpretation. Additional Excellent awards in Persuasive Speaking were gained by KIM MITTERLING, NICOLA KESTER, and SHARON WALDORF. DIANE LANDFEAR received an Excellent award in Oral Interpretation. At our second Tourney, held at San Diego State, Palomar won a total of 14 awards. SHARI MacFARLAND led the squad by capturing a Superior award in Impromptu Speaking. MITTIES McDONALD, NICOLA KESTER and DAVE SULLIVAN received Excellent awards in Extemporaneous Speaking. Excellent awards in Impromptu
Speaking were won by NICOLA KESTER, MARK VIOLET, and MARY TUCKER. Excellent awards were al so won by DARLENE HENDRICKSON, SANDY UDOV, PAM KNOX and KIM MITTERLING in Expository Speaking. The debate teams of DIANE LAND FEAR and MITTIES McDONALD, and ARMANDO SAENZ, TOM WOOD, and TONY CONNELLY won Excellent awards . Phi Rho Pi, the National Honorary Speech Fraternity of Palomar College, e lected their officers. KIM MITTERLING was elected the President. She is also the National Phi Rho Pi Sec. - Treas. MITTIES McDONALD was elected t he Vice President. ARMANDO SAENZ was elected the Secretary and NICOLA KESTER was elected the Treasurer. Our ICC Representative is SHARO~. WALDORF. MR. A minimum day schedule will be observed today as the thirteenth Annual Palomar College Invitational Speech Tournament will be held this weekend. Thirty high schools from San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties with approximately 400 students will be competing in the tournament. Fields of competition include debate, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, original oratory, oratorical analysis, dramatic and humorous interpretation. This year 35 trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each individual event. A Perpetual Sweepstakes Trophy will be presented to the high school totaling the greatest number of points for three consecutive years with the three runners-up for the Sweepstakes Trophy receiving permanent trophies. Defending champion, Grossmont High School, will be attempting to tie the 5-year consecutive record held by Sweetwater High School. Debate rounds 1-4 will beginat 1:00 P . M. ON Friday and end at 5:00 P.M. The quarter- final, semi-final , and championship rounds will be held at 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 respectively. The debate topic this year is--' 'R E S 0 LV E D: T HE FOREIGN AID PROGRAM OF THE UNITED STATES SHOULD BE LIMITED TO NON- MILITARY ASSISTANCE." The debates will be cross-examination type. On Saturday, round one of extemporaneous speaking, oratorical analysis, and humorous interpretation will be held at 9:30 with extemporaneous participants 1st drawing for topics at 8:45. The second round will be at 12:30 with extemporaneou,s speakers beginning to draw for topics at ll:45. The championship round will begin at 3:15 with the drawing for topics at 2:30. Extemporaneous speakers have 45 minutes to prepare their seven minute speeches after they draw a topic. The first round concerns international topics; the second round, national topics; and the third round, general analytical topics. Participants will obtain their information
from the U. S. News and World Report, Time, and Newsweek magazines published within the last four weeks. In humorous interpretation the student presents a ten minute prepared speech, drawing on someone else's ideas. A new field, oratorical analysis, has been added in which the contestantchooses one or m ore selections from published speeches ¡ that were actually delivered. In the introduction the contestant must state the theme of his speech to be analyzed, the author, or the original speaker , and the .source of his selection or selections. The speaker may use more than one selection, but all selections MUST be by the same author. The first round for original oratory, impromptu, and dramatic interpretation will begin at 10:30. The second round will begin at 1:30 with the championship round beginning at 4:15. Original oratory will have the student presenting a ten minute prepared speech, suing his own ideas exclusively. Students competing in impromptu have two minutes to prepare a five minute speech on a chosen topic. The first round topic will be thought- provoking quotations; the second, thoughtprovoking topics of current importance and interest; and the championship round, one-work abstracts. Dramatic interpretation contestants present parts from stories, plays, essays, or poems in a ten- minute speech. The awards assembly will be held at 5:30 P. M. in P- 32. Tournament committee members consist of: Ray Dahlin, tournament director; Susan Shields and Sharon Waldor, tournament co - chairmen; Kim Mitterling and Mary Tucker, dramatic interpretation; Anthony Connelly and Nicky Kester, debate; Andy Saei nz and Tim Chambless, humorous interpretation; Dave Sullivan, Shri McFarland, and Tom Wood, extemporaneous; Mitties McDonald and Pam Knox, oratorical analysis; Diane Landfear and Cheryl Starr, impromptu; Mark Violet and Sandy Udov, oratory.
