Director's Message This spring we are proud to present a diverse lineup of exhibitions that feature works of many different media and time periods. The annual PULSE: Art and Technology Festival will bring some of the most cutting-edge 21st-century artists to Savannah to create installations and performances that blur the boundaries between art and technology. Very different-though equally exciting-will be two chair shows, The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design, a traveling exhibition, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, in collaboration with the Jacobsen Collection of American Art and toured by International Arts and Artists, Washington, DC, and our in-house exhibition Sitting in Savannah: Telfair Chairs and Sofas.

Happy New Year! This month marks my one year anniversary as Director of Telfair Museums. It has been a whirlwind year of learning about the history of the Telfair, our three significant buildings, our wonderful permanent collection of fine and decorative arts, and the important educational outreach activities we offer to the Savannah community. I have also enjoyed getting to meet so many of you whose support makes it possible for us to present world-class exhibitions and education programs that bring the arts to thousands of people each year. Thank you! I hope you have had a chance to visit the incredible exhibition Offering of the Angels: Paintings and Tapestries from the Uffizi Gallery on view at the Jepson Center. Including works by Botticelli, the workshop of Titian, and other Italian masters, this exhibition offers the Savannah community the first opportunity to view Renaissance paintings since the 1930s. Telfair Museums is honored to be one of only four museums in the United States to present this exhibition-a real testament to the museum’s international reputation-and we are thrilled to be a partner with the Italian government in celebrating 2013 as the Year of Italian Culture in the United States! Thanks to the generosity of the Telfair Academy Guild (TAG), we are able to present three additional lectures to enhance your understanding of the exhibition. The show will remain on view through March 30, so I hope you will visit it again and again!

ART + HISTORY + ARCHITECTURE

We are also pleased to highlight several major additions to our permanent collection that will be on view for the first time this spring, including the extensive collection of important American and English silver from Dr. Frank Rizza and family and several very significant portfolios of contemporary photography from Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Rappaport, and Joel and Zoe Dictrow. Building a worldclass permanent collection is at the very core of a museum’s mission, and we are so grateful to these and the many other donors who have generously contributed works of art to the Telfair. These gifts of art, as well as the many generous financial bequests to the Mary Telfair Legacy Society, create a real and lasting legacy for the museum that will make it possible for us to continue sharing the joy of art with generations to come. Finally, we have several wonderful special events coming up, including TAG’s The Art of Great Fashion, the Telfair Silent Art Auction, the Telfair Ball & Bash, and TAG’s The Artful Table. The Telfair is so grateful to have such dedicated event chairs and committees who work tirelessly to raise funds that directly support our mission to develop awareness, understanding and appreciation of the arts. I hope to see you at one or more of these events!

Ciao, Lisa Grove, Director/CEO

Unfamiliar Behavior: Works by Hye Yeon Nam January 31-April 28, 2013 / Jepson Center For PULSE 2013, Telfair presents the first solo museum exhibition by Hye Yeon Nam, a digital media artist working in performance video, experimental interaction design and games, and robotic installations. Her work reflects the complexity of social relationships by making the familiar strange, and by interpreting everyday behaviors in performative ways. The exhibition includes the interactive robotic installation, Please Smile, in which five skeleton arms follow the viewer and point accusingly. Face tracking software changes this accusatory gesture to a friendly wave if the viewer smiles. Other works react to the viewer’s behavior, such as the miniature bowing figures that make up the interactive sculpture Hooray, or the experimental Kiss Controller, which allows a kissing couple to control a videogame via a headset and their mouths. The exhibition also includes performance videos which speak to the Korean-born artist’s initial feelings of displacement in the U.S. Hye Yeon Nam is a Ph.D. candidate at the Georgia Institute of Technology and holds an M.F.A. in digital media from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her art has been exhibited in The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. (2011-2012), and has been screened in New York’s Times Square. Her work has appeared in venues including New York’s Eyebeam and at electronic art festivals and conferences worldwide including Conflux (New York, 2010), FILE festival (Brazil, 2011, 2012), SIGGRAPH (Los Angeles, 2008, 2010), ISEA (Istanbul, 2011), and others in China, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Australia, Denmark, and Switzerland. Her work has appeared in print and broadcast media including the Discovery Channel (Canada), Leonardo Journal, Wired, We Make Money Not Art, Makezine, Business Insider and Engadget. The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design March 1-May 19, 2013 / Telfair Academy The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design tells an American story of one of the most common furnishing items found in the home, the workplace, and any sort of public setting, both interior and exterior. Using 40 chairs which span more than two centuries of design and manufacture, The Art of Seating captures a slice of Americana that parallels the arc of United States history. Handmade chairs such as Ladderback Doll’s Chair (c. 1800-25), Shaker Rocking Chair (c. 1840), and the Appalachian Bent Willow Arm Chair (c. 1890) demonstrate America’s utilitarian method of creation, whether pre- or post-industry. Other examples illustrate the variety of revival movements of the 19th century, including Egyptian, Gothic, and Rococo. Twentieth-century examples display a shift to simpler, less decorative design such as Oxbow Arm Chair (c. 1903) designed by David Robertson Smith and manufactured by Stickley Brothers in Michigan, LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) (c. 1952), designed by Charles and Ray Eames and manufactured by Herman Miller Furniture Company in Michigan, and Sol-

March 9-October 27, 2013 / Telfair Academy & Owens-Thomas House This exhibition highlights Telfair Museums’ significant collection of seated forms. Originally from the collections of 19th-century Savannahians and other collectors, this exhibition will showcase chairs and sofas as both functional objects, as well as sculptural forms. The Telfair’s furniture collection represents one of the museum’s strongest holdings. Within this category, objects created for seating indicate a variety of tastes with origins of construction mostly in the Northeastern United States, especially New York and Philadelphia. Sitting in Savannah will be the first exhibition to feature this area of the collection since the 1995 exhibition Classical Savannah: Fine and Decorative Arts, 1800-1840. Other examples represent the imaginative eye of architects, including the Johnson Wax Company Chair (c. 1938) designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and manufactured by Steelcase Corporation in Michigan, the Grasshopper Arm Chair (1946) designed by Eero Saarinen, architect of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, and manufactured by Knoll Associates of New York, and High Stool (1971), a bar chair made of corrugated cardboard, masonite and wood designed by Frank Gehry and manufactured by Easy Edges, Inc., in California. Early 21st-century examples represent work by Vivian Beer as designer and manufacturer with Current (2004), and Laurie Beckerman’s Ionic Bench (2010), fabricated by Heritage Woodshop in New York. The Art of Seating is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville in collaboration with the Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen Ph.D. Foundation and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. All chairs in this exhibition have been loaned by the Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen Ph.D. Foundation. in-depth look at a variety of collections within a short period of time, this exhibit will only focus on one aspect of furniture—seating. The Telfair Academy’s Drawing Room will serve as the hub of the show, but chairs and sofas will also be identified throughout the museum in all period rooms at the Academy and Owens-Thomas House. For example, the entire suite of the Telfair family’s Philadelphia-made curly maple furniture will be on view in the Owens-Thomas House Drawing Room. The set includes fifteen chairs, two Recamier sofas, and a center table. Created in the 1820s and likely housed in the Telfair mansion’s Drawing Room, this suite of furniture has not been on display in one room since the 1980s. Other objects on view will include fancy chairs, klismos chairs, chairs with oak, rush and upholstered seating, as well as recent acquisitions never before seen on view, including a side chair, c. 1835, attributed to Anthony Gabriel Quervelle of Philadelphia, and an 1810 sofa by J. S. Taylor of New York. Sponsored in part by the Telfair Academy Guild. Opposite: 5 Side Chair (Philadelphia), one of fifteen, c.1820-30. Other noteworthy items include a chocolate pot with cover inscribed “M. Telfair” by Samuel Kirk & Son of Baltimore, a silver spoon by the famed American patriot and silversmith Paul Revere, an early 19th century solid silver epergne made by the English silversmith Matthew Boulton, as well as a number of objects made in England by important silversmiths including Paul Storr, the Batemans, and Paul De Lamerie. Many of these pieces were included in the successful 2010 exhibition The Story of Silver in Savannah: Creating and Collecting since the 18th Century. The Rizza donation increases the Telfair’s silver holdings by approximately 20% and significantly enhances the stature of the collection. Beginning on March 23, silver and decorative arts lovers will have the opportunity to view the fine Rizza collection, which includes over 150 lots, at the Jepson Center.

Born and raised in Savannah, Dr. Frank Rizza graduated from Benedictine Military School, Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia. He served two years in a MASH hospital in Korea for the U. S. Army Medical Corps. Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Rizza completed his general and pediatric surgery residencies and embarked upon a 36-year private practice in New Orleans. From 19681996, Dr. Rizza also owned and operated St. Charles Antiques, Limited, an antiques store that specialized in English furniture, oriental porcelain, and silver in New Orleans. He and his family have collected silver for decades and are pleased to place their silver treasures with the Telfair where they can be enjoyed now and in the future by Savannahians and visitors to the community.

Facing South: Portraits of Southern Artists, Photographs by Jerry Siegel April 16 – September 15, 2013/ Jepson Center Jerry Siegel’s photographic portraits of southern visual artists compose a highly personal survey of some of the most interesting inhabitants of our region. An Alabama native, Siegel has spent the last 17 years traveling the area to capture the likenesses of both well-known and emerging artists in their familiar settings. Facing South assembles approximately 50 blackand-white and color portraits of Siegel’s subjects, including Benny Andrews, Radcliffe Bailey, William Christenberry, Lamar Dodd, Ida Kohlmeyer, Charlie Lucas, Charles Shannon, and Kathryn Windham. Expressive, intimate, and evocative, Siegel’s body of work offers sensitive insights into the region’s creative soul. Jerry Siegel, a highly-regarded photographer from Selma, Alabama, has worked as a fine art, advertising, and corporate photographer for the last two decades. Like many artists, Siegel is continuously drawn to his roots; he considers his photography to be “a journey to [his] beginning.” Siegel attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile and later graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta. His work has been exhibited in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, the Jule Collins Smith Museum in Auburn, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. This exhibition is organized by the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art of Auburn University. It is accompanied by a 232-page hardcover catalogue published by the University of Alabama Press.

Sarah Frost: Arsenal April 26-September 22, 2013 / Jepson Center

Telfair Museums will present a solo installation by Sarah Frost, entitled Arsenal. Originally created for the Great Rivers Biennial 2010 exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Arsenal is an installation comprised of hundreds of hand-made paper “guns” suspended from the ceiling that envelop the visitor and create an environment that is both beautiful and haunting. The project was inspired by Frost’s discovery of a community of boys who self-publish instructional YouTube videos for making elaborate and highly realistic paper guns, replicas of assault rifles, bazooka shells, pistols, and guns, out of copy paper and Scotch tape. Learning this craft from the videos, Frost methodically created hundreds of these paper gun forms to create a massive arsenal. Initially, Frost was attracted to the ingenuity of the homemade videos and guns but simultaneously stunned by the knowledge the boys had about the workings of the guns. She responded to the idiosyncrasy of the videos, such as an account of shooting Grandpa's snub-nosed revolver or using 1,400 sheets of paper to make a M134 Vulcan with tripod, and to the inventiveness of the gun forms. Their simple materials, paper and tape, belied their sophistication, as most shot paper darts through blow tubes, and many had moving parts: spinning chambers, folding or extendable stocks, and pumpaction barrels. For Frost, this simultaneous attraction

to the workmanship and discomfort with the subject matter was fascinating. Like an anthropologist, in Arsenal she re-presents found forms; because they are found, they are inherently reflective of their context and society. The installation evokes question-of meaning, politics, fragility, the need to communicate and so forth-above all it is a distillation of form, construction and the placement of objects within a space. Sarah Frost was born in 1967 in Detroit and lives and works in St. Louis. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and painting from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Washington University in St. Louis. Frost has exhibited her work in St. Louis, New York, Miami and Palm Springs, California. As this issue was going to print, the country was shocked by the terribly violent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Given the subject matter of this exhibition, we considered whether we should cancel or postpone it. However, upon reflection, we decided that the installation is particularly resonant in light of the recent tragedies in Connecticut, Oregon, Colorado–as well as the ongoing gun violence here in Savannah–and decided that this is exactly the right time to present it. The installation is not intended to posit any particular political point of view. We simply hope it will, in some small way, help the community deal with recent events through conversation and reflection. We are working to create an appropriate and sensitive series of programs to accompany this exhibition, including a panel discussion on the pervasive presence of guns in our culture, the impact of gun violence on our community and strategies for healing and prevention. Please check our website for program updates. Please contact our Senior Curator of Education, Harry DeLorme at delormeh@telfair. org for more information.

Pietro Liberi; Annunciation, ca. 1670 (detail); Oil on canvas.

Fabrizio Boschi (1572-1642); The Fall of Manna, c. 1594-97 (detail).

Stunning works by masters of the Italian Renaissance, including Botticelli, Tintoretto, Titian, Lorenzo Monaco, and Parmigianino, will continue to be on view this winter. The Uffizi Gallery, located in Florence, Italy, is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned art museums, and the 45 works in this exhibition have never before been on view in the United States. The exhibition includes Biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments, each hand-selected by the director of the Uffizi Gallery, Antonio Natali, to provide a compelling overview of the role of religious art during the Renaissance. Offering of the Angels also demonstrates the powerful Medici family’s impact on art patronage, which helped to create a climate that allowed these master artists to flourish during what is now regarded as one of the greatest periods of artistic achievement in the history of Western civilization. This exhibition is organized by Contemporanea Progetti, Florence, and curated by Antonio Natali, director of the Uffizi Gallery.

James Langley is a professor of Drawing at the Savannah College of Art Design who creates contemporary figurative work in the classical tradition. His client based work includes an Altar Triptych for the Opus Dei headquarters in Midtown Manhattan and decorative mural painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A solo exhibition of Langley work made possible in part by a Presidential Fellowship at SCAD is scheduled for May 2013 at Chateau de FontaineHenry in Normandy, France. In this one-day workshop participants will tour the exhibit, Offering of the Angels, and discuss the relationship of Form and Content in the old masters. The techniques and processes discovered will be further explored in the studio as the instructor leads participants in the creation of a complete portrait sketch in the classical mode. The aim of the workshop is to give participants a clear sequential methodology in moving from drawing into painting and a heightened appreciation for the art of portraiture. Beginning to advanced artists welcome. Telfair membership affords a unique opportunity to enhance your artistic skills against the backdrop of the Telfair's permanent collection and visiting exhibitions, all at a discounted price. Living History Tours: A Visit from Lafayette March 7, 8, & 9, 2013 Performances at 6 pm & 7pm

The Owens-Thomas House proudly presents a repeat of our popular living history program, “A Visit from Lafayette.” Featuring artist Alexandro Santana as the Marquis de Lafayette, the program—performed by Owens-Thomas House interpreters and volunteers—brings to life the famous visit of America’s first superstar, and his two-night stay in Mrs. Maxwell’s boarding house (today’s Owens-Thomas House.) In March 1825, Lafayette, a Frenchman and American Revolutionary hero, toured the country from 1824-1825 with considerable fanfare. His visit to the southern states was a fusion of elation and trepidation, as city and state officials prepared to welcome the Nation’s Guest and at the same time worried of offending Lafayette, because of his outspoken sympathies to the enslaved population. Admission: Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members, $25 will include the Living History performance plus a Telfair Pass to enjoy a visit to the Telfair Academy and Jepson Center. Tickets available at the door, but space is limited, please email or call Cyndi Sommers to reserve your space, at sommersc@telfair.org or 912.790.8880.

TRAVEL

Sojourn in Spain: Telfair Travels September 22-29, 2013 American artist Robert Henri (1865-1929) traveled to Spain seven times, often staying for extended visits. He found tremendous inspiration in Spanish history, culture, and in the colorful characters he encountered on his trips: bullfighters, dancers, gypsies, and others. Join other members of Telfair Museums and follow Henri’s footsteps in Spain. Spend four nights in Madrid at the Hotel Ritz, then take the high speed train to Seville for three nights at the Hotel Alfonso XIII, with day trips to Toledo and Jerez. The group will visit the Prado and other world-class museums, enjoy private lectures, receptions in exclusive clubs and private homes, and experience Spain as Henri did. The trip will be the perfect introduction to Telfair’s own Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain exhibition. A leading proponent of American realism in the early 20th century, Robert Henri was one of the most influential artists of his generation. He is represented in the collection of Telfair Museums by the stunning painting La Madrileñita, one of over fifty works created during Henri’s numerous trips to Spain. In October of 2013, Telfair Museums will present the major exhibition Spanish Sojourns, the first museum show to examine this important aspect of Henri’s oeuvre. For more information on this exclusive travel opportunity, please contact Linda McWhorter at 912.236.2840 or l.mcwhorter@comcast.net.

Trip to the Hudson River Valley In conjunction with the upcoming exhibition connecting the Telfair and New York, the Friends of the OwensThomas House are hosting a trip to the Hudson River Valley the week of June 10, 2013. The trip will include visits to public and private homes, including early neoclassical houses such as Boscobel, known for its fantastic furniture collection; and, Montgomery Place, a Federal home later altered by Alexander Jackson Davis.

ARN

Other houses on the tour will include Wilderstein, a Queen Anne-style country house decorated in the aesthetic movement style using materials such as mahogany, leather, and stained glass; Olana, the Moorish-style home of artist Frederick Edwin Church with 360 degree views of the Hudson River Valley; the Rockefellor’s Kykuit Complex; Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival country house on the river designed by A. J. Davis; and Cedar Grove, the home of artist Thomas Cole. Please contact Cyndi Sommers, Owens-Thomas House Administrative Assistant, for further details, 912.790.8880 or sommersc@telfair.org.
