ON TAP

HOUSE OF BREWS

OFFICIAL BEER SPONSOR On our search for the perfect warm weather beer, we wanted something light bodied and thirst quenching, yet filled with complex and interesting flavors. Back Porch Lager was created by the Blues & Brews staff at a unique ‘one-ofa-kind’ Beer Camp weekend, this lager is available exclusively at the festival. Torpedo Extra IPA, featuring our “Hop Torpedo,” is an aggressive yet balanced beer with massive hop aromas of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit. Inspired by traditional Bavarian techniques. With a full, fruity aroma and notes of spicy clove and banana bread, Kellerweis is a truly unique brew. Pale Ale’s unique piney and grapefruit aromas from the use of whole-cone American hops have fascinated beer drinkers for decades. Hop Hunter IPA harnesses the complex flavors of just-picked hops through an allnew method of steam distilling wet hops before they even leave the fields. Octoberfest: Each year, we partner with a different German brewer to explore a different approach to the style. This year it’s Bamberg, Germany’s Mahrs Bräu.

Along with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. the House of Brews features 5 additional breweries - be sure to stop in and check out the different flavors being poured throughout the weekend.

FESTIVAL ART GALLERY > Telluride Blues & Brews Festival’s Official Art Gallery for the weekend is at Arroyo Wine Bar, located at 220 E Colorado Ave! The artist KATIE LIN

Born in Taiwan in 1972, Ya-Li ‘Katie’ Lin had an appreciation of art from a young age. As a child, she examined comic books, wondering how drawings were made and teaching herself by copying the images. After moving to the United States as a teenager and her high school career coming to an end, she realized that she wanted to study the thing she felt she was best at: art. But it was difficult to convince her parents, who wanted her to study business, that an art degree was worthwhile. So Lin hatched a plan. She took an entrance exam for a competitive high school art program although it was too late for her to actually enroll, she thought if she passed the test she might be able to convince her parents, she was a capable enough artist to study fine art in college. The plan worked. Lin passed the test, and her parents changed their minds. POSTER SIGNING DAILY AT FESTIVAL STORE FROM 2:00 - 4:00 PM 14 | tellurideblues.com

BLISTERS & BREWS 5K RACE TASP FUNDRAISER: REMEMBERING FELIX SNOW

Felix Snow’s life was lemonade. He had plenty of lemons – likely more than most of us could have handled. He lost the use of his legs after a car crash, but rather than bemoan the hand he was dealt, he faced his changed life with courage, humor, and passionate engagement. When he passed away earlier this year, the Telluride community reeled with sorrow. Felix was a fixture at many of Telluride’s festivals and Blues and Brews was no different. He served with TBB Communications Director, Luci Reeve, who admired him for his intelligence and charisma. “Felix was such a people person. He helped people. He also kept people in line. You cannot argue with a man in a wheelchair.” TBB Festival Director Steve Gumble calls Felix “larger than

life,” and few would argue with that assessment. He was wicked smart, bitingly funny, and that voice! Oh, that voice. His resonant baritone got him work in voice acting, and when he laughed the world laughed with him. This year, Telluride Blues and Brews has partnered with Bootdoctors Paragon Outdoors for the first-ever Blisters & Brews 5K Fundraiser Race on Saturday, September 17, beginning and ending in Elks Park, in the heart of Telluride. The race will raise money for the Telluride Adaptive

THE MUSIC

REVEREND DEADEYE >

The good Reverend really is a Reverend. In fact, he’s from a family line of Reverends that could be found at tent revivals, handling snakes and preaching the word on the Navajo reservation when he was a lad. He and his brother, Backslider, took to music together, getting into metal, the blues, country – anything they could get their hands on. In the capable hands of the Reverend and his partner keeping time – Alex “Brother Al” Hebert on drums – the blues becomes a garage-y, trance blues, fire and

MORELAND & ARBUCKLE They’re baaaaaack! Guitarist Aaron Moreland, harmonicist/ vocalist Dustin Arbuckle and drummer Kendall Newby made their TBB debut some years back in the Juke Joints, making the ceiling drip sweat and blues lovers howl. On the main stage, they’re gonna tear the roof off the big joint. Electrified Delta, Mississippi Hill Country and folk blues are dished up with feral energy and punk attitude. blood boiling harmonica and slice-and-dice electric guitar make for a fiery live show. Their Alligator Records debut, Promised Land or Bust, blends traditional blues motifs – bad women, love gone wrong, and loneliness – with the trio’s relentless drive and ferocity. To attest to the many miles these gents have traveled to deliver the goods, they recently replaced their van at more than 400,000 miles on the odometer. So what are you doing still sitting down? CAMPGROUND, SATURDAY, 4 PM BLUES STAGE, SATURDAY, 6:30 PM THE MOON, SATURDAY, 10 PM

George Kilby Jr.’s sound has been called everything from New Orleans R&B to Alternative Country. Kilby doesn’t mess around when it comes to his music. “I play roughcut American roots music. It’s about writing great songs, not keeping up great traditions.” He doesn’t do it for the blues, he does it for the music. Phil Wiggins was half of the internationally acclaimed acoustic blues duo “Cephas and Wiggins” for 30 years. Wiggins’ plays the harmonica better than any blues-man around. No one can make this pocket-sized instrument sound as big as Wiggins. Phil met George Kilby Jr not long after the passing of their respective musical partners. This new partnership combines Wiggins’ masterful harmonica playing and Kilby’s unique songwriting to create an immersive bluesy, folksy new sound. BLUES STAGE, SUNDAY, 1 PM CAMPGROUND, SUNDAY, 4 PM

ISAAC ARAGON & THE HEALING NATIVE NEW MEXICAN

ISAAC ARAGON IS A YOUNG MUSICIAN DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE SACRED TRADITION OF BLUES AND SOUL MUSIC. A strong advocate for the use of “music as medicine”, he’s dedicated to alleviating the aches and ailments within both the body and the soul. His authentically soulful vocals helped him to be crowned winner of the 2015 Telluride Blues Challenge. A true soul man, Isaac’s politically charged musical message promotes love, peace, and social

justice. Open up your heart, free your mind...and allow The Healing to begin. “Passing the torch” to the next music generation - Telluride Blues & Brews Festival is excited to announce its partnership with Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation (KTBA) to support talented,

up and coming artists like Isaac Aragon. Founded in 2011, KTBA aims to preserve the blue music genre as well as music education as a whole through music projects and scholarships across 50 states, reaching over 32,000 students. BLUES STAGE, FRIDAY, 1:00 PM

His energetic brand of boogiewoogie and jump blues always results in packed dance floors and his sound will take you back to the 1940s and ‘50s, when this style of music reigned supreme. Thank goodness this immensely talented master of the 88s has kept it alive and contemporized. It’s a classic sound, and by classic, we mean it’s never truly gone out of style. Woods originally studied jazz and classical piano, but once he moved to San Francisco, he got into rhythm and blues and Louis Jordan and never looked back. He’s terrific and a guaranteed good time, which is why we’re here, right? BLUES STAGE, FRIDAY, 2:30 PM ARROYO, FRIDAY, 11:30 PM ARROYO, SATURDAY, 11:30 PM

THE RUSTY WRIGHT BAND

COLIN LAKE

Like so many before him and likely many in the future, Colin Lake was irresistibly attracted to the great music city that is New Orleans. Just 19 and visiting the city for a lacrosse tournament, he not only met his future wife at the airport, but sensed there was something decidedly different about the place. It didn’t hurt that his parents were dedicated attendees of the storied New Orleans Jazz of Heritage Festival, an influence that proved instrumental in his making the move to the Crescent City. There he nurtured his rootsy, blues-laced

music in that city’s welcoming atmosphere, busking and absorbing the sights, smells and sounds. It didn’t take long for him to become a beloved fixture on the festival circuit where his impassioned vocals are the perfect compliment for his seamless guitar work. His newest record, One Thing That’s For Sure, is a heaping platter of 11 heartfelt, intimate originals that stand alongside the work of those he’s had the pleasure of opening for – folks like Gary Clark Jr. and Dr. John.

Southern rock, Detroit muscle and a profound passion for vintage blues are hallmarks of the Rusty Wright Band. Wright is recognized as a Master Blues Artist in the International Blues Hall of Fame, and rightly so. His stinging guitar work and the sheer joy he and the band exhibit on stage makes them a must-see. With his wife, singer-guitarist Linda Wright and their new rhythm section of Mark Bumgarner on bass, and drummer Robert Vines, the RWB tours tirelessly, resulting in a well-oiled, blues-dishing machine. It’s work the band undertakes with pleasure. As Rusty says, “Art gives life its real color and it’s that joy that makes it more than just a day-to-day drudge.”

in his molten voice, one that sounds like lonesome prairies and whiskey-soaked juke joints. You can hear it in the warm wash of his guitar, which he plays solely off the fret board, pulling and hammering each fuzzy lick. You can hear it in his songs, self-penned tunes that are redolent of blues-infused rock – think ZZ Top, Junior Kimbrough or Jimmy Reed.

And when he’s finally played his last note, you’ll want more. OPERA HOUSE, FRIDAY, 10 PM

A.J. FULLERTON

JONATHON “BOOGIE” LONG

Oh, mama, what is it about the electric guitar? If you’re here for smoking guitar played by accomplished blues roots players, let’s start with Jonathon “Boogie” Long. The Baton Rouge native emerged on top of a field of more than 4,000 contestants for Guitar Center’s “King of the Blues” in the competition for #1 Unsigned Blues Guitarist in America. In 2013, he got the nod from B.B. King to join

that blues icon on tour, and he’s featured in “Boogie Blues Magic,” a triple DVD set that shows aspiring guitarists how it’s done. Long taught himself gospel tunes on guitar as a youth and by the time he was a teen he was gigging in blues clubs and touring. A passionate champion of blues and its deep history, he walks the talk. If you grew up on the East Coast in the 1970s and 80s, chances are good you saw Washington, D.C.’s terrific blues-rock band, The Nighthawks, tear it up in a sweaty little club. If you are lucky enough to say yes to that, you were fortunate to have witnessed Jimmy Thackery as an up and coming axe-slinger, already adept and fierce and more than hold-

ing his own with a band of blues veterans. When he left the group in search of expanded artistic horizons, everything bloomed – especially his songwriting. With his ace band, The Drivers, expect a show crackling with energy and chops. But first and foremost, he’s a guitarist whose playing is practically supernatural. As he says, “I put all my senses on hold and find the zone and follow what’s inside. There’s an electricity from your mind to your heart to your fingers. You just try and remember to breathe.”

This young man seems to have been born with the blues steeped into his bones. With a voice that belies his youth and a finger-picking style he could have learned from any of the greats from the Mississippi Delta, Fullerton absolutely channels when he performs. With just his voice, a stompbox and his guitar, everything old becomes new again. He travels and plays, making do on what he earns. It’s the most authentic way to learn the blues – meet people, see the country, watch, listen and maybe, sometimes, even be a little hungry. Fullerton comes from right around the corner in rural Montrose, Colorado, and has gotten recognition for his talent from Westword magazine, the Colorado Blues Society, and the Mile High Blues Society and from this festival, as well. We think he’s the future of the blues. BLISTERS & BREWS 5K RACE AFTER RACE, SATURDAY MORNING AT ELKS PARK BLUES FOR BREAKFAST ELKS, SUNDAY, 9 AM

Spontaneity and energy are hallmarks of their live show. They’re determined that they don’t sound “just like the record.” When they met, the pair each had their own solid solo careers

JOE WALSH JOE WALSH IS THE BEST KIND OF ROCK AND ROLL STAR. HE’S A GUY WHO SEEMS LIKE THE REST OF US. HE’S EXPERIENCED LOVE AND LOSS, HEARTACHE AND JOY, STRUGGLE AND HONOR.

The difference being, unlike most of us, he also wrote songs about all of that human life stuff, always with honesty, humility and a terrific sense of humor. And who among us can churn out the iconic riffs that have flowed from him for decades? From his first cannonball into the pool with James Gangs’ “Funk #49” and “Walk Away,” Walsh has taken his work – if not himself – seriously. From the time he picked up a guitar, he’s made his mark on the soundtrack of our lives. Fans of his distinctive playing style include Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and The Who’s Pete Townshend, who called him a 46 | tellurideblues.com

“fluid and intelligent player.” Walsh’s launch into the public eye began when half of James Gang quit on the way to a gig. Reduced to a trio and knowing that getting paid would be the only way they could gas up and get home, they unexpectedly found their sound. With their first record, “Yer’ Album,” they became radio staples. After James Gang, Walsh embarked on a series of fruitful collaborations, and a hit-generating solo career. Ever resourceful and musically adventurous, he jumped at the chance to join The Eagles, where his contributions were immediately evident on the first record he made with the

band, Hotel California. Already successful, The Eagles soared with Walsh in the line-up. With them, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. While wrestling with his drug and alcohol demons, he never stopped working, churning out solo records, playing with Ringo Starr, and contributing to numerous records by Steve Winwood, Warren Zevon, Bob Seger, and a host of others. Today, the analog man is sober and as productive and busy as ever. Bottom line, it’s all about that guitar and how it can carry him – and us – into another realm. “I’ll be playing and I open my eyes and I think, ‘Oh shit. I’m on stage and there’s people here!’” Walsh says. “That feeling is why we do this.” We’re proud to host Joe Walsh for the 23rd Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. Hang on for a Rocky Mountain high! THERE MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE WATER IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. IT’S FERTILE GROUND FOR MUSICIANS AND FROM THAT RICH SOIL OF TRADITION, LEGEND AND CAMARADERIE AROSE AUSTIN NATIVE, GARY CLARK, JR.

GARY CLARK, JR. He was no stranger to smoke-filled juke joints and honky tonks as a teenager, playing with grizzled vets of the music scene, his prodigy-level skills on guitar making him welcome on Austin’s storied stages. He was drifting a bit when he received an invitation to play Eric Clapton’s 2010 Crossroads guitarist showcase. When the PA cut out during Clark’s homage to Jimmy Reed, “Bright Lights,” he soldiered on until power was restored. He called the gig the lowest and the highest he’s ever felt on stage, and the resulting video footage puts on full display his confidence, prowess, and an otherworldly performance. Clapton sent him a note thanking him. “You make me want to play again,” Clapton wrote. But don’t try to pigeonhole Clark as just an amazing blues-rock guitarist. There is no doubt that he is, but when one considers the wide range of songs and musical ideas he presents, there’s something larger, and not so simple to define. The Bright Lights, Big City EP places him in the bluesrock arena, yes, but the diversity of song styles on Blak and Blue, his 2012 release, opens the door to his musical explorations. His 2015 double album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, is a tip of the hat to his Southern musical roots and also embraces the character he played in John Sayles’ film “Honeydrippers.” That character is a young musician who transformed the blues and R&B into rock and roll. Sound familiar? He’s a mind-blowing guitarist, diverse songwriter, and a singer with power and soul. We’re proud to welcome Gary Clark, Jr. back to the mountains. The BLUES

FLEETWOOD MAC’S HISTORY IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE RADIO-OWNING, RECORDBREAKING SUPERNOVA THAT WAS ITS POP SHINY MID-1970S-1980S CHAPTER.

THE MICK FLEETWOOD BLUES BAND FEATURING RICK VITO

In the beginning, it was all about the blues. Founding member and drummer Mick Fleetwood is bringing it back to basics with this terrific band featuring former Mac vocalist, Rick Vito. (Not to worry, Mac fans, you’ll also get the hits you know and love.) England in the 1960s was mad about American blues. Countless musicians formed bands around the genre they loved, including gifted guitarist, Peter Green, who, with Fleetwood and Jeremy Spencer, would lure bassist John McVie from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to form the first and probably the bluesiest iteration of the Mac. Pianist, vocalist and songwriter, Christine McVie came on board early on, and thus began Fleetwood Mac’s long and storied history. The band’s revolving cast of characters includes Green, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, and of course, the duo that helped take the band to dizzying heights, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. Fleetwood is the band’s sole, original member, the others seeming to rotate around his gravitational force. But blues music has kept calling him back. “Over my career I’ve been called a pop star and a rock star, yet in my inner heart, I will always be part bluesman,” Fleetwood says. “On my journey from blues to a life of rock ‘n’ roll, I’ve always remembered where I started.” In 2008 he teamed with Vito and Lenny Castellanos and Mark Johnstone to record Blue Again!, a live outing that garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. Considered one of the more colorful characters in rock and roll, Mick Fleetwood’s drumming is known for its unshakable beat and ability to ground whatever musical personalities swirl around him on stage. We’re grateful this tall and elegant gentleman is keeping the roots of his musical journey alive. This will be one very special performance. MAIN STAGE, SUNDAY, 6:30 PM 50 | tellurideblues.com

non-profit, to contribute to their endeavors to preserve the musical traditions of the South by directly supporting

the musicians who make it, ensuring their voices will not be silenced by poverty and time. Music Maker will give future generations access to their heritage through documentation and performance programs that build knowledge and appreciation of America’s musical traditions. Little Freddie King became part of the Music Maker family in 1998. Since becoming a Music Maker artist, Little Freddie has received glasses and dentures, help with evacuating from New Orleans after Katrina and moving back later, and grants for prescription medicine. Little Freddie was assisted by the New Orleans Musicians Fund. Music Maker has also helped him issue his record “At Home in the New Orleans Musician’s Village”, and featured him on compilation CDs. Since their founding in 1994, the Foundation has assisted and partnered with over 300 artists, issued over 150 albums and reached over a million people with live performances in over 40 states and 17 countries around the globe. We are honored to work alongside this compassionate organization in an effort to ensure the continuity of some of the purest and most honest forms of music in American history. We look forward to working with more of the Music Maker Foundation artists in the future. Want to get involved?
