The Deal FESTIVAL TIPS We are so glad you are here. Take some tips from the staff and have a blast!
Welcome to the show Welcome to the show indeed! Here we are again 24 years into what was once just a little old beer festival on Telluride’s main street. We have grown quite a bit since then and it has been a pleasure to have you grow along with us. Many people recall our first festival with one tent, two porta-potties, myself and a few friends helping out. Today, we have over 100 paid employees and 400 volunteers, not to mention a lot of porta-potties! This a great opportunity for me to thank everyone who has made Telluride Blues & Brews such an amazing success, my staff, my volunteers and most importantly you! We are lucky to have such a faithful following and words cannot express how fortunate we all feel to have you be a part of our festival family. Read our program guide, embrace the helpful tips, get in some yoga, drink some of the world’s best craft beers and don’t miss a show – you can rest on Monday. Enjoy the show!
Steve Gumble Festival Director
Drink lots of water and take it easy on the alcohol ‘til you adjust to the altitude. Wear plenty of sunblock, bring a raincoat & warm clothes for the evening. Pack out your garbage and recycle. Stay on the trails, respect the environment and leave gates as they are. Nothing beats a tarp to sit on when things are looking wet. TRANSIT A free shuttle bus makes downtown loops daily. It starts running at 7 a.m. Hours that the bus stops running vary. Thursday it runs until 12 a.m., Friday and Saturday night it runs until 2 a.m. and Sunday it runs until 1 a.m. (look for the Galloping Goose signs on Colorado and Pacific Avenues). The Gondola is a free ride to Mountain Village, daily from 7 a.m. to midnight. The Gondola runs until midnight on Thursday, until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and until 1:00 a.m. on Sunday during the festival. CONNECT WITH US

Well here is our shout out - we are having a dance party on Thursday, September 14th to open the Festival, spread the word! THURSDAY 9 PM OPERA HOUSE

BLISTERS & BREWS 5K RACE TASP FUNDRAISER: REMEMBERING FELIX SNOW
The 2nd Annual Blisters & Brews 5k Fundraiser Race returns on the morning of Saturday, September 16, 2017. The 5k Race, sponsored by BootDoctors™ Paragon Outdoors, raises money for the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program in remembrance of honored festival friend Felix Snow. The race highlights the natural beauty of Telluride as racers climb up the town’s River Trail and take in unobstructed views of the iconic Ingram Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Through registration fees, donations and the generous support of the Telluride community, we proudly raised over $1,750 for the Telluride Adap-
tive Ski Program in the inaugural year. We’re eagerly looking forward to another amazing year of community support. Course begins at Elks Park and climbs up the bike path to Pandora Mine and returns along the same route. Racers will follow Colorado Avenue east and pick up the river trail, climbing to the Pandora mine. Racers will turn around and enjoy cruising down to the finish at Elks Park.
Two aid stations will provide water electrolytes and snacks. Don’t like to run, but want to support? Non-athletic support donations are also available. THE ARTIST
DARYL PRICE
The artist behind the 2017 Telluride Blues & Brews Festival poster is Daryl Price. Daryl is a self-taught painter whose work consists mainly of American Jazz and Blues musicians from the 1930’s and 40’s. He has created a unique, signature style emphasizing bright colors and movement. Believe it or not, Daryl uses no references when he paints, even though it is mostly realism. His long career as a competitive bodybuilder gave him the knowledge of human anatomy that he draws upon when painting. Check out Daryl’s artwork in person during the festival weekend from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. daily at the festival merchandise tent. MITCH WOODS CLUB 88 FREE AFTER HOURS JAM As host of the after hours Piano Bar on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise for 12 years, the extraordinary boogie-woogie/jump blues piano master Mitch Woods has created a beloved tradition. One night, after a particularly inspiring all-night session, a hand-painted sign appeared declaring “Mitch Woods’ Club 88”, and so began the stuff of legend. Mitch still hosts the late night sessions in his pajamas,
and musicians come to sit in after they finish playing their sets on the main stage. He’s even performed an improbable duet with an Alphorn player. (Who cruises with a 12-foot long Alphorn, anyway?) Now Mitch brings his Club 88 to the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival for the same late night party! All musicians are invited, so bring your axe for some late night jammin’ at the piano above the mile high limit! Expect some surprise guests and lots of great music in an intimate soulful setting. BRIAN KEITH WALLEN
STEVE ITTERLY Mr. Itterly is the Telluride Blues and Brews 2016 Telluride Blues Challenge winner, and one of the perks of grabbing that honor has landed him on the stage this year. The Telluride Blues Challenge is an annual competition hosted by the Telluride Blues Society and the Colorado Blues Society. The competition showcases talented musicians who excel in the Blues genre and is open to any solo performer(s), acoustic and electric, who are not currently signed to a major record label or publishing deal. With influences and styles ranging from ragtime, western swing, country blues and Jimmy Page’s acoustic fingerpicking style, Steve writes his own material. His songs reflect a myriad of American music traditions, as well as his own personal reflections. Congratulations, Steve! FRIDAY 1 PM BLUES STAGE 20 | tellurideblues.com
What will strike you first about seeing Brian Keith Wallen perform is the focused energy he brings in buckets full. Next is the way you’re mesmerized by his guitar work – at once shambolic and precise. The rhythm he stomps out is feral and true. The first time we saw this gent play, we knew he’d be perfect for the rolling intimacy of our Durango Blues Train summer series. He’s a crowd favorite and this year in Telluride, he’ll be performing not once but thrice. You have zero excuse to miss him. The son of Indiana has traveled the world playing everything from house concerts to rock clubs, from cities of renown to scenes of his familiar farmland home. Check out
his blog about the life of a traveling musician. It’s insightful, filled with gratitude, and downright poetic at times. His blues come from that place. Treat yourself. THURSDAY 5:00 PM, FREE SUNSET BLUES CONCERT MOUNTAIN VILLAGE SUNSET PLAZA SATURDAY 10 PM OPERA HOUSE SUNDAY 9 AM ELKS LODGE
TERESA JAMES & THE RHYTHM TRAMPS
What a voice! Sensuous, mighty, heaven-sent, emotive. What a band! Studded with the best of the best players in the blues-rock music world – tight, cool and steady and deep in the groove. Teresa is a Houston native who now makes her home in Los Angeles. This hard-working blues woman has released a slew of well-received records and has lent her voice to the recordings of artists like Eric Burdon, Randy Newman and Tommy Castro. She knew she wanted to perform for a living when she and her father won a talent show when she was
a young girl in Texas. Through high school and college, she sang in folk and rock bands, but when blues music found her, she knew she’d landed where she belonged. We agree with The Band’s late drummer, Levon Helm, who said, “When she sings, you can feel it in your bones.” FRIDAY 10 PM ELKS LODGE

He’s fresh from winning the 2017 International Blues Challenge for Best Self-Produced, CD, High Temperature, The Rolling Stones’ keyboardist, Chuck Leavell digs him, and George Thorogood, Buddy Guy and Canned Heat have all asked him to be an opener for them on the road. Finally, it must be said he’s got a glowing seal of approval from blues guitar great, Hubert Sumlin, who said of JW, “JW’s got it down! So much soul, and nice material. You can’t beat it. I am telling the truth.” Well then. SUNDAY 2:30 PM BLUES STAGE
woogie confabs have sealed his reputation as one of the best jump blues piano players working today. Fans dubbed those at-sea, sweaty sessions Mitch Woods’ Club 88. His infectious energy and incredible showmanship make sitting still an impossible proposition. Going to a Mitch Woods set means you are dancing. End of story. Mr. Woods delivers a sound that hearkens back to the great jump blues bands of the 1940s and 50s. He calls his style “rock-a-boogie.” We call it straight-up fun. FRIDAY 11:30 PM THE LIBERTY SATURDAY 11:30 PM THE LIBERTY SUNDAY 1 PM BLUES STAGE
We’re proud to say we’ve been hip to this young man since the first time we heard him play. With his superb finger-picking and bottleneck slide work, soulful vocals that seem to be coming from a much older cat, and songs that get deep inside, A.J. Fullerton – who grew up just up the highway from Telluride in Montrose, Colorado – holds the future of the blues in his capable hands. This year, he’s playing with two fine musicians in their own right. Nic Clark’s beautiful harmonica playing is a melodic dance that uplifts every song he plays. Drummer Stud Ford is the grandson of the late, great T-Model Ford (TBB 2010), and he plays in intenses Hill Country blues drumming style that demands both stamina and precision. Youthful energy, fresh ideas and reverence for tradition are embodied in these three young musicians. MONKEY JUNK Monkey Junk is Steve Marriner (vocals, harmonica, baritone guitar and Hammond organ),
Matt Sobb (drums and percussion), and Tony D (lead guitar), a swampy, funky trio from our great neighbor to the north, Canada. This oft-decorated band took its name from a Son
House interview, in which the great bluesman, describing how the blues is about love, reportedly said, “I’m talking about the blues. I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout no monkey junk.” The Ottowabased trio is a fixture on the blues scene in their native Canada, and have racked up numerous Maple Blues Awards, as well as Juno Awards and nominations, winning in 2012 for Blues Album of the Year, To Behold. Marriner has a gritty, old soul voice, and Sobb’s rock solid platform pins down their swampy groove over which Tony D’s guitar work soars. Is Canada a great country or what? He dove into the cool, blue pool left by the greatest blues pioneers – Son House, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Elmore James – and has emerged with an adroit understanding that he’s an honored bearer of the blues standard. authenticity that’s hard to find in today’s auto-tune world. His songwriting demonstrates a melodic gift that reflects another of his influences, none other than Tom Petty. Those old blues mas-

The music, performed by Pascal Danae, guitar and vocals, Rafgee on the sousaphone and Baptiste Brondy on drums and vocals, is a mystical, swampy blend of Mississippi Delta blues, Caribbean rhythms and Big Easy funk and drive. Born in Paris to Caribbean parents, Pascal has searched for the link between his love of the blues, and his ancestral home of Guadeloupe. This captivating trio

JOHN NÉMETH AND THE BLUE DREAMERS The first time he heard “Hoodoo Man” by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Németh knew the blues would be his path in life. And what a path. The Boise, Idaho native has roamed from Idaho to San Francisco to Memphis, a city rich in musical history that he now calls home. He’s a proud recipient of two Blues Music Awards; a 2014 nod for Soul Blues Male Artist, and in 2015, his record, Memphis Grease, took the prize for Soul Blues Album. This year, he’s on the Feelin’ Freaky tour
in support of his latest record by the same name, produced by Luther Dickinson. This new collection of original songs – always punctuated and informed by his incredible harp playing – run the gamut of songs that address societal concerns, to the sheer pleasure of dancing and weed. His band, The
Blue Dreamers, give Németh’s songs the drive and energy they deserve. He’s a monster in the blues world, but he’s impossible to categorize. Let’s just say he’s an amazing performer. And you should buy his latest record, Feelin’ Freaky. It’s really good.

ROBERT FINLEY
“WORKING WITH ROBERT FINLEY WAS INCREDIBLE. HE’S THE GREATEST LIVING SOUL SINGER AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED.” – DAN AUERBACH OF THE BLACK KEYS Robert Finley chose the blues when he was just 11 years old. The Bernice, Louisiana native
needed new shoes and his father sent to town with money to get a new pair. He returned home
wearing his old shoes, but the proud owner of a guitar. Inspired by his love of the ladies to learn his craft, Robert worked hard at it and succeeded. While in the Army, he led a band that wowed both the troops and European audiences with deep soul and R&B hits of the day. Back home, keeping a band together was harder, so he made his living at carpentry, picking up solo gigs when he could. Today, now legally blind, he no longer has to bang nails for a living but, with the help of the Music Maker Relief Foundation, keeps busy touring and working at what he does best – steamy blues, imaginative lyrics and a show that just won’t quit. He’s all about “making magic happen.” SUNDAY 12:30 PM MAIN STAGE

Folks, if you don’t know zydeco, you will after Dwayne Dopsie’s set. Son of zydeco legend Rockin’ Dopsie, (it’s pronounced doopsee), Dwayne and his Zydeco Hellraisers take the tradition to new energetic, youthful heights. This music puts you squarely in the heart of New Orleans, where the genre’s roots grew from French Creole musical tra-
ditions, blending blues, rhythm and blues, and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native people of Louisiana. Dwayne was born for this music and picked up the accordion at the age of 7, when it was immediately apparent he had “it.”

BEN MILLER BAND The Ben Miller Band is a band that sets up on the front porch on a hot summer night and plays until the moths have all beaten themselves senseless on the light bulb. Their feral, rootsy sound is made with a collection of instruments both traditional and fabricated from the stuff some people call junk. As an opening act for ZZ Top, members of the Top found themselves mesmerized, unable to look away, while Miller and company whipped the crowd into a dust-raising, footstomping frenzy. They call their sound Ozark Stomp and in it there are elements of rock, bluegrass, and Appalachian mountain music. The blend is oddly mystical, impossible to keep still to, and completely engaging. won our hearts in a huge way. One song in, she kicked off her red high heels (“I’m high enough without these.”), and absolutely electrified the Sunday afternoon crowd with her
sizzling guitar work, soaring vocals and a red-hot band that knew no other gear than overdrive. It was nothing short of amazing and we knew without a doubt we had to invite her back to the mountains. For the uninitiated, Samantha’s rock and roll roots are in plain sight, and her sound fuses blues and soul into one steamy pot. He latest record, Chills & Fever, finds her in cahoots with members of the Detroit Cobras, an elbows-up, fierce punk blues outfit that suits her insurgent proclivities and elevates her playing to the stratosphere. THE REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND The Reverend’s live shows are bodacious, rollicking affairs, and the Big Damn Band (the Rev on guitar, Breezy Peyton on washboard, and Maxwell Senteney on drums) leaves everything on the stage. Their corn-fed brand of blues is a hot funnel cake of country blues, a dusting of punk energy, and a deep fried reverence for acoustic blues legends like T-Model Ford and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. The new record, The Front Porch Sessions, was recorded in an old church with vintage instruments, giving it a homey feel. 32 | tellurideblues.com
Dotted with originals, covers and instrumentals that show off the Rev’s deft guitar work, you can fairly hear the wood creaking underfoot - as the Reverend intended. It’s music that’s real and intimate and honest. “I’m interested in making hand-

THE MAGPIE SALUTE This band is for those of us who speak Rock and Roll. Though The Magpie Salute was only formed late last year, they are old musical compadres with thousands of miles, a musical history, and many stories between them. The brainchild of The Black Crowes co-founder, Rich Robinson, the band features former Crowes guitarist and bassist, respectively, Marc Ford and Sven Pipien, with drummer Joe Magistro and Matt Slocum on keys. The Magpie Salute vocal contingent is mighty – John Hogg handles lead vocals and former Crowes singer Charity White and background
singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen add power to the Salute’s not-kidding-around rock and roll show. They shine new light on Crowes classics and cover songs by War and Delaney and Bonnie, just to hint at what to expect. Response to The Magpie Salute has been fantastic. Sold-out shows (many added on due to popular
demand) speak to the reverberating adoration fans have for The Black Crowes and for real rock and roll. As Rich says, it’s even more than that. “It’s freedom, it’s love, it’s loss, it’s pure joy. It’s misery, it’s simultaneously arrogance and vulnerability. It is life.”
has made them one of the most lauded and respected gospel vocal group to have ever worked. Grammy awards for their recorded work, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame, as well as
performances in the White House for three different presidents are all indications that staying true to gospel – the music they love – was a fine decision indeed. Testify!

His dedication is unwavering and his spirit is strong. “What inspires me most about my career is that I’ve been able to make a living playing the music that I always loved and wanted to play since the early 50s,” he says. “And the fact that I still am involved in enjoying an exciting career at this point in time is truly priceless.”
In 2014 he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement for Performance Award at the 13th Annual Americana Honors and Awards, a recognition he said, “means the world to me.” Keb’ Mo’, who along with Taj, has appeared on the Blues and Brews stage before, is no less a revered figure in the blues music world. Kevin Moore became Keb’ Mo’ in the 1994 with the release of his eponymous

SING A SONG, PLAY GUITAR, MAKE IT SNAPPY. WHEN YOU HEAR THE NAME STEVE WINWOOD, WHERE DO YOU GO? BACK TO BLIND FAITH? ON THE ARC OF A DIVER? DO YOU PLAY TRAFFIC IN YOUR HEAD? OR DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE KID WHO WAS THE DRIVING FORCE OF THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP?
STEVE WINWOOD Wherever Steve Winwood’s impressive output takes you, it’s pure gold. Creatively restless and curious, the hallmark of Steve’s musical journey has been one of exploration and testing boundaries. The albums he’s made with Blind Faith and Traffic set him apart as a musician who reaches out to other, equally adventurous souls – Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Rick Grech, Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood – to make records that remain as fresh and exciting as the first time you dropped the needle in the groove. Then as now, there’ve been no other recordings quite like John Barleycorn Must Die, or Blind Faith’s sole eponymous record. Musical conventions of the day were challenged by the sheer audacity of their compositions, range of influences, and stellar musicianship. What remains are classic records that reside in every serious listener’s collection. His solo records unleashed the Grammy tide – in the late 70s and 1980s, his melodic songs were radio staples and a career that at that time was already 20 years on, exploded. A wickedly talented multi-instrumentalist, Steve might be best known for his distinctive Hammond organ sound, a sound he has lent to Jimi Hendrix on “Voodoo Chile,” and as recently as on Miranda Lambert’s hit, “Baggage Claim.” You hear it and just know it’s Mr. Winwood. In Steve Winwood’s music there is a vast range of influences and styles. He’s explored Delta blues, English folk, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and melds them into his own inventive songs. Chances are, you know the words to all of them. We’re honored to have Steve Winwood play for you. SUNDAY 7 PM MAIN STAGE tellurideblues.com | 45

BONNIE RAITT PLAYS THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES. HER HONESTY, HER WARMTH, HER BEENTHERE, FELT-THAT SONGS SEEM TO BE RIPPED FROM THE PAGES OF OUR OWN DIARIES.
BONNIE RAITT Listening to her music feels like sitting down with an old friend when the blues hit hard, but the company we’re in is the best medicine. Twenty albums, 10 Grammys, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, countless gigs and other recognition … Bonnie’s life has been a life of music. Since she was given her first guitar at the age of eight, her path was made evident. Encouraged by her parents, the Broadway star John Raitt and her pianist mother, Marge Goddard, Bonnie dove into the blues, folk and protest scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she was attending college. Honing her remarkable vocals and nuanced slide guitar work in area coffeehouses, she was blessed to be able to open for and learn from some of the giants in the blues world – she counts Sippie Wallace, John Lee Hooker, Son House and Muddy Waters as mentors in music and in life. Her dedication and passion is not only the blues, but to the art of the song. Her covers of songs by the likes of John Hiatt, Michael Hutchence, T-Bone Burnett, Sippie Wallace and John Prine are often viewed as definitive versions. Her slide work has earned her inclusion in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and her own self-penned tunes reach deep with their honesty and emotional impact. A dedicated activist, Bonnie’s interests include the anti-nuclear movement, and a program that connects young people with their musical roots. Additionally, she is a co-founder of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, which works to improve royalties and the alleviate financial hardship for soul and R&B artists whose work – and deserved remuneration - too often gets swept under the carpet. Her newest album, Digging In Deep, is a celebration of new songs – originals and covers – and the amazing alchemy she loves about playing with her touring band. Ricky Fataar, George Marinelli, James “Hutch” Hutcherson, and Mike Finnegan play with intuition, finesse and an undeniably funky groove. With this record, Bonnie has, once again, told the stories of our lives with songs that dance us through our blues. Welcome back to mountains, Bonnie. FRIDAY 8 PM MAIN STAGE 46 | tellurideblues.com

You may also have seen him as the host of ABC’s “Oscar Roadtrip” featured during the Pre-show of the 85th Academy Awards, as the star of the NBC primetime hidden camera series “The Real Wedding Crashers,” his memorable guest star on the E! scripted series “After Lately,” or from his recent webseries “Cinedopes” available for free on Youtube. Esquire once called Ben Gleib one of “six comedians who could be comedy’s next big thing.” The other 5 were Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Demetri Martin, and Flight of the Conchords. It came true for each of them, and it now seems to be Gleib’s time.

REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE + COMPOST

When you arrive at the Festival, you’ll find six recycling and compost centers located throughout the Festival grounds and one in the campground. Blues & Brews is teaming up with Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. LNT teaches people of all ages how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, and is the most widely accepted outdoor ethics program used on public lands. As a proud partner of Leave No Trace, the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival is pleased to be able to do our part to pass our nation’s heritage of outdoor recreation on to future generations. WIN PRIZES: Stop by the LNT booth near the entrance to the Festival and find out all of their initiative based contests to win all kinds of cool swag!

REFILL & REHYDRATE
Bottled water is not available for purchase at Blues & Brews. We offer FREE water stations to keep you hydrated. Bring your bottle and refill throughout the day at our Filling Stations on the west end of the park and in VIP. Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that’s not even including the oil for transportation.

Heralded as SBG Productions’ live music event unlike any other in the country, this “moving” experience places passengers intimately next to six Blues, Rock and Zydeco acts each night of its run through the canyons of Colorado’s San Juan National Forest. Inspired artists fill vintage coach cars with their lively music as passengers dance and enjoy award-winning craft beer plus select wines, and are free to move between rail cars to catch all the performers! Held during two weekends in June and August, this is a “must do” for any dedicated audiophile and train enthusiast with an adventurous bucket list.
