Smiles What’s one of the things you do every day before you leave your home for work? If you are like me, you take one last look in the mirror, flash those pearly whites, smile and tell yourself to make it a great day. Now, this has nothing to do with vanity or conceit. It has everything to do with giving yourself that last boost of confidence to face the day, whatever may come your way. Have you ever contemplated what it might be like to have the simple advantage of a beautiful smile? What if every time you looked in a mirror, you were reminded that society looked at you as an outcast or, even worse, society thought it was a sign of evil that you had a deformity not allowing you to shine through an incredible smile. For some children, both in the United States and countries abroad, their reality is just that. They have the misfortune of being born with cleft lip or palate. This is not their choosing, it’s just a fact. In the March issue, we are dedicating our pages to the PPA Charities alll new promotion, “Day of Smiles.” Here, you can discover a miraculous and affordable way that you can help children all around the world show their inner beauty and soul with that gorgeous smile. Be sure to check out the video links and sign up to participate. Your heart will thank you and so will the children.

RICK GIBBONS
Any Day, Any Week It could have been any day of the week and any week in the year. The phone rings. We talk to a mom about photographing her son, five years old, about to go to school for the first time. Clothing consultation, discuss backgrounds choices, find out the final will be a traditional oil painting. Same conversation, different day, different week. His name is Connor. Blond hair, sparkling eyes. A little shy at first but warming up… responding to us and the toys. Before we finish the session he is all smiles and his mom is thrilled with the possibilities. We discuss a return visit to see the projected images (wow, that Photovix is soooo cool… we’ll never stop using that to project negatives). Same session, different day, different week. Mom returns the following week and selects the image for the oil painting. We discuss the expression and she wants to make sure the smile is just right. Can she speak with the artist who will paint the 20x24? We begin to wonder how this is going to go. Then she brings out the baby pictures and tells us about Connor. Amazing story, life changing day, life changing week.
The first image stops us in mid sentence. Blinking back the tears, we listen as she details the first days of the life of her first child. Born with bi-lateral cleft palate and lip, the worst possible, she cradled Connor as only a new mother can. Although he had no discernable mouth and nose in the photo, her protective instincts kicked in when they told her he wouldn’t be able to nurse, breathing would be a problem and speech would probably never be intelligible. Nothing could be done until he was about 6 months old…if he survived malnutrition and sinus infections.
BLONDE HAIR SPARKLING EYES 18
Connor had three things in his favor:
His mom is a fighter; no is not in her vocabulary, he was born in the US where medical help was readily available, he was covered under his parents insurance. His mom mobilized immediately to find the care he needed. It was realized in the form of Dr. Bill Magee, plastic surgeon and dentist in Virginia and, along with his wife Kathy, co-founder of Operation Smile. In a matter of days, Connor was in Norfolk. Surgery was prioritized and the initial results were not only promising, they were astounding. Although Connor was not officially an Operation Smile patient, a bond was created between Dr Magee and Connor’s family. He endured 11 more surgeries as he grew before he came to see us at age five. His mom wanted to make sure the smile was just right. No other day photographing a child has compared, not before, not since. v
Connor and his brother were so thrilled to be a part of the SEPPA calendar project they inspired in 20042005. With the support of Bill Camacho and Marathon, SEPPA produced a beautiful calendar showcasing the artistry of award winning photographs from the 2004 SEPPA print competition, representing every SEPPA state. SEPPA presented Operation Smile a check for $15,000 at the awards banquet. Connor’s family drove to Atlanta to be a part of the festivities. Dr Magee came to accept, along with the NC chapter director from Greensboro, just a few miles from Connor’s home. Dr Magee’s talk was so moving Buddy Stewart could barely continue with the awards presentation, stopping repeatedly to gather his emotions. Ann Monteith, PPA president, scheduled lunch with Dr Magee the next day and unfolded her vision of PPA Charities and a partnership with Operation Smile that would give hundreds of children the same opportunity Connor had. She must not have slept a minute that night. Due to the generosity of PPA members, half a million dollars have been donated since that day in 2005. Over 2000 children and their families given a new life; the gift of a smile. PPA studios continue to support this partnership. April 21 is the day of Celebration of Smiles. PPA Charities and Marathon have done all the work for you to make it easy to participate. Visit the PPA Charities website and register as a Celebration of Smiles Studio and you will be sent everything you need. The phone rings. It’s Connor’s mom. He has had more surgeries and is now a teen. He is speaking at civic clubs, telling Rotarians his story. It’s an amazing day…an amazing week.
