President Obama Appoints Marc Morial To Advisory Council Today, President Obama announced the appointment of Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, to a key Administration post: Member, President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. In this capacity, Morial will serve an important role in advising the President and the Secretary of the Treasury on how to promote the financial capability of young people in our country, work toward our future financial stability and increase upward economic mobility. He joins a distinguished list of other appointees announced today as well. Everything I tell you is a lie... I’m lying to you now By Bryan Cobaris If a car dealer sold an automobile to you for one price, but sold the exact same type of vehicle to one of your relatives for $10,000 less, would you ever buy from that dealer again? If a childhood friend borrowed money from you every time you received your income tax refund, and never paid you back, would you continue to loan them money? If your doctor told you that you need a small medical procedure that was very routine and had a 100% success rate, how would you react if you woke up after surgery to find that one of your limbs had to be amputated due to negligence on the part of your doctor? Lies come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Lies can come in the form of sociopathic con-artist who can knowingly lie to you for profit, or they come in the form of people who take advantage of your relationship or affection for them. They can even come from people who don’t have the courage to acknowledge that a situation may be beyond their range of abilities. It would be at this point, where you say, “Cobaris…what does any of this have to do with the title?” Well I’m glad you asked. The title was paraphrased from the “I,Mudd” episode of the original Star Trek series where the main characters were attempting to confuse an android by making it overthink. If everything I tell you is a lie, then I tell you that I’m lying, you won’t know what to believe. This is the state that we find ourselves living in here in 2014. As human beings, we have spent so much time lying and being lied to, we don’t know what to believe anymore. Don’t believe me? Stop reading this article for a few seconds, and just look around you. Go ahead. I’ll wait....................welcome back. Do you want to talk about what you saw? More importantly let’s talk about what you don’t see. Even though we’re in a technological age where we can instantaneously connect to more people than ever before, did you see people laughing and talking and enjoying each other’s company or did you see people more focused on their phones. With all of the educational resources available both in school, and on the Internet you should see intelligence as a byproduct of time spent on both within our young people, but you most likely see an outpouring of ignorance and stupidity that reflects carelessness, naivety, that lacks any concern for or awareness of the world in which they live. Did you see Christians using practical applications from the Bible or did you see confirmations of the hypocrisy that the world has claimed that Christianity has become?

Whether racially, physically, fiscally, or spiritually: we’re living in a world of lies. The Haitian community is looked down upon by the Black community, which is stereotyped by the White community which is marginalized by China and the more affluent countries around the globe. The cosmetic surgery profession has built a new mansion on Happy Street due to the explosion of implants, injections, and various augmentations which are hysterically priced to make people feel better about the way they look. Our own community have passed on extremely warped values to our young people creating a sense of entitlement that trumps anything else of value. I have worked with young people for over 20 years and have watched them value the price of their hair, brands on their clothes, and functions of their electronic devices over their ability to read and maintain any appropriate social decorum in the public. I have seen the lyrics of their favorite songs/raps become the gospel to the kids, as common sense dies a slow death. Luxury cars, or expensive custom fittings, continue to take precedence over purchasing homes or investing in sound business ventures. Prom, sporting events and baby showers have garnered more attention for our school-aged children then PTA meetings, tutoring and graduations. In the churches, the leaders lie to the congregations, the congregations lie to themselves, and misguided members of the Christian community have lied to the world. Well with all of the lying...whose benefiting the most? If you’re keeping score, the liars are becoming wealthy and commercially successful from the lies that we are willing to believe and adopt. Whose gaining the most? Is it the politicians that quietly design laws to re-establish the Black community as an underclass? Is it the fashion industry, entertainment industry, cosmetic industry, the rental industries, and every other industry that are making billions while we consciously and happily make contributions to our own demise? With all of the lying, we have loss sight of the source: the father of lies. A famous quote has been changed over the years, but one version has never rang truer. It states: “The greatest lie ever told, was when the devil convinced the world that he doesn’t exist”. If you remember the first three questions I asked at the beginning of the article, I’m pretty sure you immediately came up with three answers to them which centered around not allowing that situation never happening to you again. That’s the key. When you know the intentions, agenda, and abilities of one who lies to you, you become that much harder to fall victim to them. The devil wants your gifts, your time, your loved ones, your peace of mind, your potential, your reputation and your soul. God has allowed us this knowledge and our obedience and allegiance to Him generates a shield of wisdom and peace that allows us to prosper in this world of deception. But it’s not enough for you to just know the truth and be set free by yourself. You are appointed to share this knowledge. There are people that God assigned to you that won’t listen to anyone else. That makes you highly important to the Kingdom of God. Don’t quit! Don’t give up! With this brand new surge of empowerment you go out there, help others and become who God made you to be…now’s the time. Stay encouraged! NAACP Statement of Voting Rights to UN Human Rights Committee (GENEVA, Switzerland) – The NAACP issued the following statement read before a hearing of the United Nations Human Rights Committee ahead of the US ICCPR review: This statement is made on behalf of The ACLU of Florida, The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, The Navajo Nation, FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, and The NAACP. As detailed in the shadow reports submitted by numerous U.S.-based organizations, we are deeply concerned by continuing efforts across the country to restrict access to the ballot. As a result of the 2013 Supreme Court Decision in Shelby County vs. Holder – Today there remains no protection for millions of citizens whose voting rights have come under attack as a result of local and state laws. For example, last month in Ohio, “Golden Week” was eliminated – this was a week during the early voting period when the state permitted same-day voter registration. Moral Monday Florida Social Justice Campaign Launches At The Florida State Capitol 8

“The assembly here this morning shows not only just Florida, but the country, how important it is for Americans to lift their voices and for those voices to be heard. You are beauticians and barbershop owners, you are state government workers, you are low wage workers looking for better wages, you are Florida, you are America, and you deserve the right to petition your government,” stated Lorraine Miller, NAACP Interim President and CEO, during remarks at the State Capitol. NAACP Statement on the Michael Dunn Verdict: There Are No Winners in this Case (BALTIMORE)—On Saturday, the jury in the trial of Michael Dunn, a Florida man who shot a teenager to death in a parking lot, found Dunn guilty of second-degree attempted murder for getting out of his car and firing 10 times at the Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle in which Jordan Davis was killed. The judge declared a mistrial on the count of first-degree murder; which applied in the death of Jordan Davis. The NAACP released the following statements in response to the verdict: Adora Obi Nweze, President of the Florida State NAACP: “The State of Florida has spoken and 47-year old Michael Dunn will have to answer for some of his crimes relating to having opened fire on an SUV filled with unarmed black teenagers. Today a jury convicted Dunn on three counts for the attempted murder of Tevin Thompson, Leland Brunson, and Tommy Storns, the three teens in the car with Jordan.

The judge declared mistrial on the count of first-degree murder that applied to the death of Jordan Davis. While prosecutors have stated they will retry Michael Dunn for the murder of Jordan Davis, there are no winners in this case. Two parents will forever remain without their only son; three other young men had their lives changed forever and the State of Florida and the country as a whole is left to deal with yet another senseless murder of an innocent young man whose life was cut short for no other reason than the color of his skin. Young, black men are not thugs or suspicious by definition; and this important verdict reconfirms that those who commit crimes based on those misplaced preconceptions will not go unpunished. The NAACP will continue to push for a change in the laws that make these types of crimes more prevalent and the punishment for their commission, less likely. Stand Your Ground laws create an environment that places far too many people, especially young African-American men, at risk of losing their lives as a result of nothing more than the perception that someone "feels" threatened. The only possible result of assigning life and death decision-making authority to anyone with a gun is the unnecessary loss of innocent lives. The NAACP will continue to work with the State of Florida and the other 33 states across the country who currently maintain some form of stand your ground law to repeal these inherently discriminatory laws. People should be allowed to live without constant fear that their lives are at risk just because of someone's offensive- often racebased—perception. NAACP Applauds Attorney General Holder for Speaking Out Against Felony Disenfranchisement (Washington, DC)-- The NAACP commends Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder for speaking out against laws prohibiting people with felony convictions from voting even after they have served the terms of their sentences. The NAACP has been actively engaged in campaigns in Florida, Iowa, Virginia, Delaware and other states to bring the practice to an end. "By perpetuating the stigma and isolation imposed on formerly incarcerated individuals, these laws increase the likelihood they will commit future crimes," Holder said at a Washington, DC, symposium on sentencing laws. Florida, Iowa, and Kentucky are the only states that continue to disenfranchise persons convicted of felonies even after they have completed all of the terms of their sentences. Marches & Rallies Are Good, But… By Temia Brinson On Monday, March 10, 2014, hundreds came to a march and rally held by Rev. Al Sharpton in an effort to protest against Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' laws. In attendance were radio host Tom Joyner, Attorney Benjamin Crump, Congresswoman Corrine Brown, State Rep. Alan Williams, State Sen. Chris Smith, State Sen. Geraldine Thompson, Rev. Jamal Bryant, the parents of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, and family members of Emmett Till. There were several speakers at the rally, including Rev. Al Sharpton. "To have laws that tell people that they can shoot first and then ask questions later is a violation of our civil rights," said Sharpton. Rev. Jamal Bryant stated he was giving a 'warning shot' to companies such as Tropicana and Disney. Bryant provided a telephone number for both companies and instructed the audience to call and ask the companies to support a repeal of Florida's stand your ground law. I honestly don’t think this was a wise decision on the part of Rev. Bryant, as it would have been more fruitful to allow corporations an opportunity to weighin on a conversation prior to any negotiations or any kind of public “outing”. Rev. Bryant and those who support him, shouldn’t expect a check from these companies any time soon. And speaking of “checks”, it is also worth noting that Rev. Bryant failed to disclose which organization he’d like these corporations to send contributions – his church, Crump, or Sharpton’s, but I digress... I find it interesting that after Rev. Bryant spoke, Rev. Sharpton didn’t say anything in regards to this plan, so I’m not sure if Sharpton is a fan on this master plan. If he is, then he’s being unusually quiet about it. Davis for a dispute over loud music. However, Michael Dunn was not convicted of first degree murder, as it was a hung jury on the charge. Since the verdict, the outcry from several organizations has grown against the stand your ground law. Congresswoman Corrine Brown encouraged people to become more involved in the process and attend the Senate Criminal Justice Committee meeting after the rally. It seems her advice was taken, as the committee room was at capacity and two additional rooms were opened for people to watch on closed circuit tv. However, the number of people that could testify was limited, as stand your ground was not on the agenda. The parents of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis testified, as they were invited by State Sen. Chris Smith. Sen. Smith is the Vice Chair of the committee and is currently working on a fix to the stand your ground law. Rev. Jamal Bryant stated during his speech at the rally, that he was advised if he was allowed to speak before the committee, they would have to let the NRA speak as well. Although Rev. Bryant did not testify before the committee, he was in attendance along with Congresswoman Corrine Brown, Attorney Benjamin Crump and others who traveled to participate in the rally. Rev. Al Sharpton was not in attendance. Maybe he had to get back to New York, but I find it quite interesting to have the time to organize a march and a rally, but there’s no time or effort to put forth real work with the legislatures and organizations to make an amendment or repeal of the stand your ground law possible. Significant changes to the stand your ground law doesn't seem likely when looking at the recent happenings from the Florida legislative body. Recently, a bill to repeal the law, sponsored by State Rep. Alan Williams, was defeated. State Sen. Jeff Brandes filed a bill to give immunity to those who carry a concealed weapon or firearm during a declared state of emergency. State Rep. Matt Gaetz, Chair of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, previously stated that he will not change "one dam- comma" of the stand your ground law. It is evident that the Republicans will not budge easily. Congresswoman Corrine Brown is the voice of reason when encouraging people to become more involved. Although marches and rallies are excellent tools to bring awareness to problems, change will never happen without real work. 11

Keep Attention On Stand Your Ground, But Shift Focus To Other Bills By Jason Henry

Since the unfortunate death of Trayvon Martin, many have trained their focus on repealing Florida’s selfdefense law labeled ‘stand your ground.’ From Reverend Al Sharpton to radio host Tom Joyner, there have been marches, rallies, protests, boycotts and everything in between to bring attention to Florida’s backwards way of defining self-defense. This past Monday in Tallahassee, Sharpton and Reverend Jamal Bryant led a march and rally to, once again, bring attention to ‘stand your ground.’ They continued to call for its repeal and talked of Florida lawmakers facing consequences at the polls if their demands were not met. That type of rhetoric may be good in spirit, it’s just wrong in execution. I can appreciate those who want to change a law that looks as if it disproportionately impacts AfricanAmericans. Working together to change anything for the greater good should be celebrated and not demonized, but that’s where my line ends. Many lawmakers who are in favor of SYG, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, the chairman of the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee, has already committed to protecting ‘stand your ground.’

There are many things floating around the Florida Legislature that deserve our attention besides a bill that will die in committee. When the day arrives that the political environment is more inviting to change SYG, your focus may pivot back to that issue. Until then, find something else to proactively change so that we aren’t reacting to a bad law five years down the road. Vision should be the guiding principle, not blind emotion. Orville Lee Wollard, a Davenport father who fired a shot in selfdefense to fend off his daughters abusive boyfriend, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the trial, the judge stated that the sentence was “…obviously excessive…” and if not for the mandatory minimums enacted by the legislature, he would have used discretion in sentencing. Invoked in this case was Florida’s 10-20-Life statute, a controversial mandatory minimum sentencing law that requires courts to impose a minimum sentence of 10 years, 20 years, or 25 years to life for certain felony convictions involving the use or attempted use of a firearms or destructive device during the commission of a violent felony. Representative Edwards believes that House Bill 89 will reform 1020-Life to allow necessary judicial discretion in certain cases, and passage of the legislation will create a political climate that could allow for a grant of clemency to people like Orville Wollard. “It is time we fix the flaws in Florida's mandatory minimum sentencing laws,” said Representative Edwards. “For too long, these laws have been costly to Florida taxpayers and are robbing us of the resources we need to address the root causes of violence.
