10 tips for safe spring cleaning

(NC)—As warmer weather melts the last of the winter snow, thoughts turn to the promise of spring—and the responsibilities of spring cleaning. As you pull the mops, scrub brushes and buckets out of the closet this year, experts tell us to focus on the chores at hand and keep your physical safety top of mind. “While it might not seem a particularly dangerous undertaking, spring cleaning can cause injuries to you or your loved ones,” says James Savage, executive vice president at Western Financial Group. “Slowing down to think about what you’re doing and make some common-sense adjustments can save you trips to the local emergency department.”

Plan ahead for your patio

Savage offers a checklist of spring cleaning safety measures:

A patio adjacent to a home often becomes an extension of its living space and the centre of family life during the summer months. You might say it is really the first room to welcome the spring sunshine. So why not defy the last days of winter and get your patio ready for your family’s outdoor activities.

1. Pace yourself. Accidents are much more likely to happen when you are tired or rushing.

A place to entertain and relax throughout the summer, your patio deserves all your attention. There are plenty of ways to accessorize it before the warm weather arrives. New trends start appearing in shops and specialized boutiques in March, so keep your eyes open for patio sets, planters, and outdoor cooking equipment that will make outdoor living fun and easy. From sunshades to dishes, and from seat cushions to flower pots, match the style of your patio to your own tastes. At this time of year, there’s no chance any items will be out of stock!

2. Be cautious when using a ladder or step stool. Always stay at or below the highest safe standing level. 3. Warn everyone in the house when floors are wet.

For patio furniture, take your time and shop around to compare all the choices available to you. Wood, steel, rattan, and resin are all available. If you need some advice about durability and suitability, springtime is the best moment to get the full attention of the garden furniture expert at your local hardware store or home decorating store.

The patio is a play area for children and it is a place to relax and entertain friends.

If some work needs to be done to improve or update your porch or patio, calling in a professional in the low season can be much more economical. Even though the price of materials doesn’t change much in the summer months, that certainly doesn’t apply to the price of labour!

4. Keep high-traffic areas, stairs and landings free of clutter and cleaning equipment.

7. When carrying loads up or down stairs, make sure you can see over the top of each load and that you have one hand free for the railing. 8. Use nontoxic, environmentally friendly cleaning products whenever possible and always follow the safety guidelines on product labels, including wearing gloves or a mask when advised. Be aware that combining products, such as ammonia and bleach, can create dangerous toxic fumes.

5. Don’t leave buckets of water (a drowning hazard) around the house, especially if you have small children or pets.

9. Go through your cabinets to dispose of unneeded products and to make sure that anything labeled as a poison or danger to children is locked up.

6. Use appropriate lifting technique when moving furniture or other heavy objects. Bend at the knees, lift with your legs and don’t twist as you lift.

10. Remember that this is a great time to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and to replace their batteries.

Time to open the cottage!

Opening a summer cottage or cabin involves a few essential jobs if you want to have a care-free summer. The first step is to start up all your electric appliances. Check over the outside wiring, looking for rodent chew-marks, and activate the main breaker, ensuring first that the secondary breakers are all closed. Switch on the secondary breakers one at a time, checking each one individually before plugging in your appliances. If your cottage is powered with propane, check the state of the tank, the main pipe, and any secondary connections. The idea is to detect any leaks by smelling for gas. If everything appears to be in order, ensure that the vent is not blocked by a bird’s nest before starting your heater. Next, check your water heater. Make sure you fill it with water before making sure it works, otherwise you will burn out the heating element. Do this by turning on the hot water tap at a sink and waiting for the water to run before starting your water heater. The next step is to check the general state of the cottage, from the roof to the foundations. Look for anything that needs to be repaired: roof shingles, gutters, soffits, paint, hinges, door handles, etc. Take this opportunity to check for vermin or small animals that have gotten inside the cottage through the chimney, the basement, or cracks in the walls. Check any outbuildings as well. If you have a swimming pool at your cottage, start it up as soon as possible so that bacteria and algae will not develop when the weather turns hot.

Magenta, fuchsia, Bordeaux... so flattering for the complexion! When looking for the top trends in colour this spring, look no further. Last winter’s palette continues to be all the rage, especially the saturated tones of Bordeaux, burgundy, fuchsia, and magenta. What a magnificent way to flatter the complexion! Tops in these tones are perfectly combined with light coloured skirts, jeans, or black pants.

This summer’s trend: print shoes You probably noticed print shoes in all the shoe store windows last winter. There was no shortage of geometric shapes and showers of shining stars, proof that shoe designers have been taking seriously the task of putting feet in the spotlight! Well, it looks as if they succeeded, because spring styles are showing our thirst for ever more innovative patterns.

Bordeaux suits any hair colour as well. Everyone can wear clothes in this wine-hued red without it taking over their whole look, no matter whether they’re blonde, brunette, or even red-headed. In fact, Bordeaux has a rich, gleaming quality about it that can only add to the voluptuousness of whoever wears it.

Great gifts for green thumbs

(NC)—Almost every one of us knows someone who loves to work in the garden. But buying gifts for gardeners can be difficult, especially if you’re not as horticulturally-inclined as they are. Here are some suggestions that can make any serious gardener happy:

Page 7

How old is your skin?

As the age-old adage says, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. That certainly applies to skincare.

Tools and gadgets If it looks like their gardening spades have seen better days, get them a new set of gardening tools. If you aren’t sure, have someone at the store help you choose the most useful items. Also, kits that help test the soil, meters that help measure soil moisture and other gadgets that make gardening chores easier or more comfortable (think kneeling pads and good gloves) will surely please any avid gardener.

Skin has different needs depending on whether you’re in your twenties, thirties, or on either side of menopause. Although the skin’s main ageing factor is genetic, pollution and unprotected exposure to the sun can prematurely age it. If it hasn’t been cared for properly, your skin can make you look even twenty years older than you really are! Skin is at its best condition around the age of 20. At this age it produces lots of collagen and elastin, and cells are being renewed at a vigorous rate. Thorough cleaning followed by a moisturizer is all the care a young person’s skin requires.

Decorations Every garden needs a few quirky yard decorations. If the gardener in your life has a sense of humour, consider a decoration which reflects that personality trait. Buy decorations made for outdoor use and designed to blend in with different garden themes. A hummingbird feeder is another popular item that all gardeners can appreciate. Just don’t forget the food. Hummingbird feeders are filled with a sugary liquid that keeps these beautiful birds coming back for more. Think outside the box Finding it hard to uncover a special something for the gardener in your life who seems to already have everything under the sun? Consider a gift certificate from their favourite supplier or a local botanical garden. You can also purchase garden essentials through a non-profit organization like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (www.ccfcanada.ca) on behalf of the gardener in your life. Your donation will help equip families living in extreme poverty with tools to grow nutritious fruits and vegetables that can be sold to provide a source of income. It makes an excellent gift and can help save lives.

Small wrinkles caused by facial expressions will creep up on you in your thirties. A wrinkle can take up to 10 years to form, but don’t panic. Just use antioxidants and serums containing vitamins C and E, and exfoliate your skin twice a week to encourage the formation of new cells. Because of fluctuating hormone levels during the forties and fifties, the skin tends to become thinner. It is advisable to combine a polyphenoland collagen- based day cream, which will encourage cell renewal, with a liposome-based night cream that will nourish and hydrate the skin. At this stage an eye cream is also useful in the fight against wrinkles. No matter what your age, it goes without saying that a healthy diet and at least two litres of water per day will help you to maintain a glowing complexion. Most important of all, be sure to protect facial skin from sun exposure. Use sunscreen before going outdoors in any season.

See what it says about the effects of chemicals.

Maybe that’s why Mom has so many mood swings!

Nature didn’t intend your hair to be stripped of its natural beauty.

The Benefits of Eliminating Harsh Chemicals: * Healthier Environment * Longer Lasting Colour * No Scalp Discomfort or Staining * Any Result You Could Possibly Imagine

* Superior Grey Coverage * Greater Shine * Healthier Hair * No Chemical Odors

Sparkling clean from top to bottom Spring is the season of renewal. It’s also the time when we’re most likely to feel like scouring our homes from top to bottom. We all love to have a clean and sparkling home to welcome the beautiful, sunny days of summer. The spring clean is an annual rite of passage to chase away all the dirt hidden away in a home’s nooks and crannies, so after putting away cool-weather boots and parka and ice scraper for the car window, get ready to wash, dust, and polish. Do you hate spring cleaning? Then call on the services of house cleaning experts who have turned dusting and mopping into a fine art. Ventilation ducts, walls, floors, baseboards, mouldings, windows, carpets, rugs: nothing can escape the keen eyes of these professionals. Entrust a specialist with all your cleaning jobs, from attic to basement via the garage and even the outside of the house. And don’t forget that your pets could probably do with a good grooming session as well! For a quick version of the spring clean, fresh air is the key word. It eliminates all traces of fall and winter, including irritants such as dust and allergens. So open your windows wide and let the wonderful scents of spring freshen up your entire house. While the windows are open, why not grab the mop and a pail of water to give the floor a quick swish; it will dry fast and bring a sparkle to your space. Spring will definitely be in the air after a little bit of hard work!

Renovations inspired by spring

photos: jupiterimages / thinkstock

Because our mood is often influenced by the season, it’s common to get the sudden urge to redecorate when the colours of spring start to emerge after the winter. Beautifying our surroundings is akin to carrying nature’s awakening into our decor, to the renewal of life, especially as it centres around the pleasure of entertaining and living comfortably in our homes. This year’s design trends are influenced by four key factors: cute, raw, refined, and a mix of these. All these influences are inspired by the 1950s, meaning they are a combination of kitsch and contemporary. The cute element is found in carefully designed small objects, the raw in natural materials such as various types of wood and natural fabrics, and the refined is represented in the care

brought to elegant decors and in the choice of accessories. Once again this year, the colours of walls, accessories, and floor coverings create a lively atmosphere, springing from all these latest trends. Our decor becomes a tonic to draw us away from the winter blues. Among this year’s colours, candy pink and lemon yellow are definitely at the top of the list, along with turquoise blue, apple green, and all the acid tones. Neutral shades inspired by nature keep their role as a base colour to contrast with brighter shades. They are available in warm, cold, or metallic tones.

This year’s decorating trends are inspired by the 1950s and combine lively colours with natural materials.

Finding the perfect shorts The cool look of shorts is back with a bang this year. They’re arriving in the stores in a wide range of styles, shapes, and cuts. All you have to do is find the right pair for your shape and style in order to look and feel great. If some fashion trends are flattering for certain body types, others only emphasize flaws you’d love to hide. Errors can be avoided by not becoming a slave to fashion trends. Many people often ignore elements that would suit their body shape for the sake of looking “in”. Unfortunately, the result can be far from flattering. When searching for the perfect pair of shorts, identify your strong points and emphasize them. Decide whether your figure looks better with shorts featuring a high or below-the-navel waist, long or short legs, and fitted or baggy style. Keep in mind that the elegance of high cut waists is the basis for a striking summer style, while hip huggers are suitable for trim figures and stiff fabric, such as denim. If you like the nautical look, complete your outfit with a little top held close to the body with a braided leather belt. Or add a sequined camisole and a pair of sandals to create a totally different look, one that is absolutely perfect for an evening out. Another great idea is to create a “Lolita” retro look by Find the right shorts to show off your figure combining a short, gauzy this spring. peasant top with high(Photos www.garage.ca) waisted shorts.

Transform your home with spring décor

Page 11

(NC)—With the chilly winds of winter behind us, it’s time to welcome sunny days, green grass and first flowers. This spring, infuse your home with vibrant colours, fresh floral touches and breezy fabrics. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to transform your home – simply update pieces you already own to create a brand new look for spring. Lighten up Do you have velvet drapes or a sofa covered in heavy fabric? Start by removing the drapes and replace them with airy sheets. Slipcover the sofa and other furniture with paler tones. Remember that sheer curtains, bedskirts, tablecloths and pillows all say ‘spring’ louder than any other element. Look for designs that complement your lifestyle and interiors. Rethink the rugs Spring is a good time to have heavy rugs cleaned or repaired. Be sure to replace cozy area rugs with inexpensive cotton alternatives in vibrant, pastel colours. De-clutter now Look for organizing solutions for your home. Any spot that is overcrowded can drain your energies and fill your life with clutter. Donate clothes, books or toys to charity. You can also auction off any unwanted items online and donate a portion of the proceeds to a non-profit organization. The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada, for example, (www.ccfcanada.ca) works to improve the lives of children living in poverty around the world. Accessorize Spring is all about rebirth, making it a wonderful time to reboot your home décor. Bring out your floral china, fresh plants, flowering pots or plant elegant orchids in your own backyard. These lively touches can breathe new life into your home, just in time for Spring.

Spring is the perfect time to think of your upcoming events and projects. Plan ahead and book Portable toilets for weddings, family reunions, house parties, renovations etc. Save time running to the landfill site by renting GarbaGe bins for renovations, roofing and clean up projects. sePtic tanks are recommended to be on a 3 to 4 year cleaning schedule. Save future problems by having yours pumped regularly.

Are you ready for strong colours?

Time to sow your seeds Even if it’s not quite warm enough for outdoor planting just yet, from March until May many flower, vegetable, and herb seeds can be sown indoors. Here are a few basic rules for successful planting.

photo: Creatas / Thinkstock

Choose your seeds carefully. There are hundreds of seeds available on the market, so it’s very important to take your time choosing. Decide which are the most suitable for you depending on what you like, what you need, and the amount of space you have at your disposal. Always

read the growing recommendations on the packet very carefully. Clean your containers thoroughly before use. Containers specifically designed for seeds (trays, individual pots, containers made of fibre, peat, and plastic) are readily available in stores. You could also use small yogurt pots, for example, as long as they’re completely sterilized. Ensure that all the containers have drainage holes and that you have plastic dome lids to cover them. Choose a light, porous potting soil. Commercial potting soils are excellent, as they retain good moisture levels. Always use room-temperature water for your seeds and seedlings. Light is another important factor in seed cultivation. Seeds don’t need a lot of light to germinate, but as soon as the seedlings appear they will need bright light for 12 to 14 hours a day. Fluorescent tubes (40 watts) positioned 15 to 30 cm over the containers will give ideal lighting. If this arrangement isn’t possible, place the containers on windowsills facing south or southwest.

From March until May many flower, vegetable, and herb seeds can be sown indoors.

If you’re a novice gardener, start with just four or five varieties. When you have more experience you can gradually add different varieties for more of a challenge.

This summer, acid colours will be all over the place. Watch out, because these are the colours that are so dazzling you need sunglasses to look at them! For all you daring men out there, this will definitely be the way to make a fashion statement this season. Keep in mind that mastering the art of wearing these strong colours requires a certain talent.

Learn how to combine them with neutral shades in order to tone down the overall effect. To give flair to any outfit, think primary colours, especially warm shades such as red and orange. Ocean colours, particularly cyan and indigo, are also popular this summer. Some brave souls will dare to sport extra-bright versions of these colours — we might even call them fluorescent. Once again, as long as they’re used with discretion, all these shades are acceptable. The combining of the traditional dark spring raincoat with bright orange pants, as proposed by Soïa & Kyo, is a marvellous interpretation of this trend towards vibrant colours. Embrace the style by wearing just one touch of it in any outfit. This hint of vibrant colour will dominate the ensemble while highlighting a sleek style and the lines of the body. One final word of warning: this trend should only be adopted if you love being classified as unconventional. A striking style is great, as long as it’s not taken too seriously by the wearer. And don’t forget: once fall arrives, these colours will have to be stored away for another summer. Touches of vibrant colour are all the rage this summer. (Photo Soïa & Kyo/Jimmy Hamelin)

Has harsh winter weather damaged your home? Has snow clearing ruined your flowerbeds? Has the wind torn off some of your roof shingles? Spring brings lots of little fix-ups that need your attention, but for most of them you don’t need to be an expert in renovations.

12-03-09 1:39 PM

The exterior of a home usually needs some preventive maintenance in the spring, once all risk of freezing has passed. A few simple tasks will be sufficient to improve the appearance and the value of your residence. Foundations Check to ensure that no new cracks have appeared and that existing ones have not increased in size. Call in an expert to fill the cracks and solve the problem once and for all. Windows If the paint on windows, outside cladding, or the patio has peeled, the wood is probably damp. Any rotten wood should be replaced before repainting. Driveway Examine your driveway and other paved surfaces, including those of indoor garages. Identify all the potholes and cracks in the asphalt that will have to be repaired. Stepping stones in walkways that have broken, chipped, lifted, or sunk over the winter will also need repairing. Gutters Once the blossoms from spring-flowering trees have fallen, clean the gutters even if you did them in the fall. Take advantage of this extra cleaning to make sure the anchors aren’t loose and that your gutters are draining efficiently. Use a garden hose to detect any leaks and ensure that water drains freely through the downspouts and away from the house.

Top 21 car care tips

(NC)—Owning a car is a big investment. It requires vate existing scratches or cause new ones. regular maintenance to keep its value and to ensure your safety. To make sure you have a winning hand 4. Rinse your car before washing to remove grit parwhen it comes to caring for your vehicle, here are 21 ticles, which could scratch paintwork as you wash. of the best – and easiest – tips:

5. Use two buckets – one for soap, one for clean water for rinsing – when washing your vehicle. 6. Use a water blade not a towel, to remove most of the water, followed by a synthetic chamois to remove the excess. 7. Wax your car twice a year to protect its paint and help maintain its value. Polish the car in between waxes to clean, protect and maintain shine. 8. Check for UV damage on your headlights. If yellowed or cloudy, a Restoration Kit can completely restore them to gain up to 4 seconds of reaction time. 9. Remove bird droppings as soon as possible. Soak a cloth in hot water and put it over the area for 5 minutes, then wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

1. Examine your paint for new scratches frequently.

10. Lighten your load. If you have more than a dozen keys and other knick-knacks hanging from your keychain, it’s time to lighten up. The weight can wear down the tumblers in your ignition and eventually lead to ignition switch failure.

2. Repair scratches as soon as possible. Taking care of them quickly prevents rust and prevents more costly removal later. To remove light scratches, look for quality, do-it-yourself products when you shop. Most popular is their High Performance Paint Scratch Remover. Deep scratches may require professional sanding. 3. Never use dish soap to wash your car. It will aggra-

11. “E” does not mean “Enough.” Don’t let your car’s gas tank get to empty. Not only is it dangerous to drive with low fuel levels, it is also damaging to your car. Sediment from gasoline settles at the bottom of every gas tank. When your gas level is low, you force your car to use the dirtiest gas in its tank for fuel and risk this dirt getting into your car’s fuel line and engine.

12. Park indoors or in the shade as much as possible to protect your car’s paint from damaging UV rays, bird droppings, falling branches and other environmental elements. 13.. Replace wiper blades every 6 to 12 months, as they become cracked, brittle and worn due to ozone, contaminants, exposure to sunlight and temperature changes. This action could save your windshield, and your life. 14. Get more mileage out of your tires. Use the PSI (pounds per square inch) recommendation on the door jam of your car, instead of the one on your tires to keep them properly inflated. 15. Check the battery. Once per year, a car care professional should make sure it is working properly and holding its charge. 16. Check tire tread for wear. 17. Never, ever text and drive. 18. Vacuum the car’s interior regularly, especially in areas where road salt is used. Salt can go through carpets and rust the car from the inside out. 19. Wipe away spills immediately, Soft drinks in particular can be corrosive. 20. Keep up with oil changes. The frequency depends on the make and model of your car, so check with your manufacturer. 21. Always wear a seatbelt.
