Tara books Founded back in 1994 by a group of writers and designers committed to feminist and egalitarian principles, we’re now a worker-owned cooperative based in Chennai, India. Our books are largely visual, spanning a range of genres: from children’s literature and picture books for all ages, to titles for adults featuring popular culture, photography and art. We are interested in the physical form of the book, the quirky pleasures of reading, and with genuinely changing the perspective from which stories are told. Collaborating with unusual talent from unlikely places – often bringing them into the form of the book for the first time – we ensure that our books reflect the richness and breadth of India in a very particular way. Our books are not generic, but very located, yet universally accessible. Universality to us is not a global sameness but a genuine connection with difference. This year marks an exciting new chapter in our history, with the opening of our Book Building in Chennai. A space that is at once a bookshop, a workshop space, a gallery and an office, we hope it will further our conversations around the book as a unique cultural object. We’ve also added an entire range of stationery to our creative output. For more details see our stationery catalogue.
handmade In 1996 we created our first handmade book, and began refining a process of bookmaking that is still going strong. Our print workshop here in Chennai now employs 17 artisans who are expert printers, binders and bookmakers. The workshop runs on fair trade practices, with the workers living together as a community. We use handmade paper and non-toxic inks, and misprints are recycled into Flukebooks, our ‘one-off’ notebooks. The statistics are astonishing: over the years, our handmade book unit has created over 200,000 books, which require 12.5 million impressions, or individual ‘pulls’ in the silkscreen printing process for each colour. As far as we know, we’re the only publishing house in the world that produces handmade books in these numbers. In effect, what we do is make artists’ books in enough numbers so that they become affordable for the average book buyer. It’s our way of nurturing the physical form of the book in an age that is busy writing its obituary.

tribal & FOLK ART Tara’s ongoing dialogue with the incredibly rich and varied forms of indigenous tribal and folk art in India goes back over a decade. We’re privileged that in India, unlike in many parts of the world, these artists are our active contemporaries, ready to engage with us. Our books are not ‘about’ such traditions in the conventional sense – we’d like to enable our artists to be authors: active creative voices in the space that a contemporary book provides. Many of them come from very remote and marginalised communities, but as is evident from the books themselves, their talent, intelligence and imagination is astonishing. The art traditions that we have worked with include Patua, Gond, Warli, Mata Ni Pachedi, Meena, Mithila, Kalamkari and Patachitra.

design Experimenting with the physical form of the book is a Tara trademark. The narrative, the art, the artisanship and the object are all part of this process. In pushing the boundaries of the book form, we’re fascinated by its resilience. We’re ready to experiment with cuttingedge design, but insist that it communicates. Design for us is not an embellishment, but an integral part of how a book works: the final voice in the dialogue between text, image and production.

‘I’m the fastest animal in the forest!’ boasts Kanchil the mouse deer. ‘And I challenge any animal to race me!’ Who will step forward to accept this challenge, and can Kanchil be beaten…?
This Indian retelling of the great flood story is illustrated in the Patua style of scroll painting from West Bengal, India, offering a universal perspective on an ancient tale.
The Great Race is an exciting retelling of an Indonesian folktale, featuring the popular trickster Kanchil. Illustrated using the exquisite Mata Ni Pachedi style of ritual textile painting from Gujarat, this is the first time that this rare form of traditional art has been used to illustrate a children’s book. This is the third story in our Kanchil series, which includes the much-loved Mangoes & Bananas and The Sacred Banana Leaf, (see page 33).

The Patua is a folk form that combines performance, storytelling and art. In this book, the traditional essence of the style is retained, but the vertical Patua scroll has become horizontal, nudging the art tradition in an entirely new direction. Designed in accordion folds, and encased in a colourful slipcase, each flowing fold of the accordion takes the reader from a deluge of water to a rainbow of hope.
The red-and-black illustrations are striking, & the brisk story compelling — Kirkus Reviews A lovely way to enhance children’s sensibilities to the rich and diverse folk arts of India. — Young India Books

Bhajju Shyam – a brilliant artist from the Gond tribe in central India – was commissioned to paint the walls of an Indian restaurant in London, and spent two months in the city.
Special Mention, White Ravens Catalogue, 2011 This graphic novel version of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement is an exciting dialogue between two very different storytelling traditions. That’s How I See Things
Gita Wolf, Ramesh Hengadi Shantaram Dhadpe
Bhajju Shyam, Sirish Rao
Winner of the BolognaRagazzi Award, New Horizons, 2010
IBBY Honour List, 2010
An introduction to basic verbs, aided by the elegantly minimalist pictograms of Warli art, which is practised by a tribal community from Maharashtra, in western India. Do! is screen printed onto recycled kraft paper, recreating the mud walls of the village homes where the art has its origins.
A happy artist, with an extremely weird and wonderful way of seeing the world, paints a bizarre set of animals. He gets into trouble though when suddenly the pictures he paints begin to come to life. A fable on the power of art and imagination, brought to life by renowned Gond tribal artist Bhajju Shyam.
Children relate immediately to this art style, and the book can be used in many ways – as a picture book, to learn about verbs, to discover new stories on each page, to talk about village life or to learn how to draw in the Warli style.
