♦ ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 ♦

TEMPLE FANS,

Before we turn the page on 2017-18, let’s take a look back on another successful year for Temple Athletics. Our athletic teams had tremendous success on the field, highlighted by All-Americans, Championships and national rankings. In the classroom, our student-athletes continued to raise the bar, setting records where it truly matters. I am also very proud of the way our young men and women have given back to the community, setting new marks for projects and hours in service to others. Here is a list of some of our major accomplishments this year: ♦♦ Temple’s single-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) ranked second in NCAA Division I among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions, and is tied for ninth in multi-year APR. ♦♦ Temple led the AAC with seven programs earning NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) Public Recognition, which honors the top 10 percent of Division I teams across the nation for their multi-year academic performance. ♦♦ Owl student-athletes earned a cumulative GPA of 3.19 for the spring semester, marking the 13th straight semester that Temple student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 GPA. ♦♦ Overall, 16 programs earned a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0, led by women’s cross country (3.74) and men’s cross country (3.51). ♦♦ Temple student-athletes posted an 88 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which ties the school record set in 2016. It also marks the eighth straight year of either tying or setting a new mark in this all-important area. ♦♦ Dr. Stephany Coakley joined our athletics staff becoming the University’s first full-time mental health specialist strictly for student-athletes. ♦♦ Over 3,000 community service hours were logged by our selfless Owls. ♦♦ Under first-year coach Geoff Collins, Football earned its record third straight Bowl bid and defeated FIU, 28-3, in the Gasparilla Bowl. Two Football players were selected in the 2018 NFL Draft with an additional seven Owls signing free agent contracts. ♦♦ Men’s Crew’s Varsity 8 won the Dad Vail Regatta for the first time since 2004 to earn a berth in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta for the first time since 1994. ♦♦ Fencing won its 22nd straight NIWFA championship and ended its season ranked 10th nationally. Kennedy Lovelace earned All-America honors and Malia Hee was named the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award recipient for academic and athletic excellence. ♦♦ Men’s Cross Country won its first IC4A Championship with Marc Steinsberger winning the individual title. ♦♦ Volleyball posted another 20-win season and advanced to postseason play for first time in 15 years, advancing to the round of 16 in the NIVC. ♦♦ Men’s Basketball defeated a nationally ranked team (#16 Wichita State) for the 11th straight season and earned its 19th trip to the NIT. These accomplishments have been made, in part, due to the generosity of our donors who continued to increase their investment in Temple Athletics; impacting facilities, programs, and opportunities for our student-athletes. Our overall fundraising had another record-breaking year with a total increase of 24 percent from the previous fiscal year. On behalf of Temple Athletics, I thank you for your support, and look forward to seeing you during the 2018-19 athletic year. GREATNESS DOESN’T QUIT.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

STUDENT-ATHLETE CAREER SERVICES

NANCY & DONALD RESNICK ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES

Student-athletes at Temple face unique pressures and demanding schedules as they represent Temple in the classroom, on the field, on the court and across the country. Not only do they matriculate at an extremely diverse comprehensive learning environment, but they also compete in some of the nation’s top athletic conferences. They enjoy an active lifestyle in the world-famous city of Philadelphia. And they have the enthusiastic and dedicated support of the Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes, better known as the Resnick Center. From admission through graduation, the Resnick Center provides advising, tutoring, specialized services, assistive technology and more to all Temple University student-athletes. Every step of the way, we do everything we can to help our Temple Owls be the best students-and the best athletes- they can be.

MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES

Continuing to expand on an already successful program implemented in recent years, Temple Athletics took the next step in its mental health resources by hiring Dr. Stephany Coakley, the first full-time mental health specialist solely for the athletic department. Dr. Coakley's areas of expertise include: mental skills training and mastery, personal player development, sport career transitions (SCT), injury and rehabilitation, positive youth development through sport, parenting well-rounded athletes, managing anxiety and other emotions, coping with pressure, building confidence, maintaining motivation, attention control, and military performance enhancement.

STUDENT-ATHLETE WELFARE

The development of Temple’s student-athletes transcends the classroom and training facilities. Temple Athletics takes a holistic approach to student-athlete welfare. From career services to programming and services addressing mental health concerns, Temple University has demonstrated a commitment to providing exceptional resources to ensure a comprehensive student-athlete experience.

In 2017-18, staff in the Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes worked to establish and innovate career services, engaging our student-athlete population with on-campus resources, career development off-campus excursions, open houses, and workshops. The Resnick Center welcomed new in-house specialist, Coordinator for Leadership and Professional Development, Alyssa Drachslin. With a specialized position as an additional resource, students will have supplemental support in preparing for life after college. While running programs, like VERIFIED, this position will allow for innovative career development initiatives. Partnering with the Career Center and their Employer Partnership Team, the Resnick Center hosted a collection of career development events including the following: FBI Open House ♦♦ Students participants were able to have an intimate look into life as a FBI Agent in the Philadelphia Offices. Temple University Career Talk ♦♦ Hosted (in collaboration with the Career Center) a panel followed by networking, that featured leadership from the following companies and organizations: Manestreem, Foresters Financial, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cow & the Curd, and Fox CSPD. Career In Sports Forum ♦♦ Temple’s own Career in Sports Forum offered student-athletes the opportunity to hear from individuals of Temple Athletic Administration share their stories and their growth into a career in sports. This event was designed specifically for students interested in sports as a professional field, and allowed these students to ask detailed questions to the panel of administrators. Tailored to a particular career interest, this experience offered an in-depth look into starting a career in this field, and what it takes to succeed. Frank Recruitment Group ♦♦ The Frank Recruitment group is a global recruitment firm that provides boutique and specialized recruiting for six different career opportunities. Companies partnered with the Frank Group offer employment opportunities in niche technology markets. This was an excellent opportunity for students from a variety of backgrounds and provides excellent experience for students with interpersonal skills, communication, time management, prioritization, accountability and teamwork.

Owls in Studio ♦♦ Resnick Center took a select group of student-athletes to tour the ABC 6 Action News studio and network with executives. Student-Athlete Networking ♦♦ This event invites all student-athletes to come and spend a night networking with a variety of different companies spanning across many different fields. This type of event is designed to allow students to be exposed to many options encouraging them to think outside the box when it comes to their careers. The following companies were present at the networking night: IBX (Independence Blue Cross), PA State Police, Teach for America, City Year, Verizon, Enterprise, AXA Advisors, Mass-Mutual Financial Group, USGA, Ross Stores Freedom Mortgage, Philadelphia Union, and FBI. Life After Athletics- Northwestern Mutual ♦♦ The Resnick Center and the Career Center hosted Northwestern Mutual, to present on Life After Athletics, and how to use improve your brand and utilize it to make professional connections. Owls Take Manhattan ♦♦ The Resnick Center organized an event, selecting approximately 50 students for a career development day in New York City, NY. This exciting experience began at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. with a panel of industry leading individuals. Students heard meaningful messages about each panelists’ path toward their current success in specific industries, including hardships of entering new career fields, and overcoming multiple failures to reach succes. The session was followed by a short networking session that allowed students to approach the panelists with individual questions, helping students initiate potential relationships. Panelists include: IBM Global Sales, VP Roc Nation, Senior VP T&M Protection Resources, Finance VP New York Giants, Senior Advisor Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., President of Amy Larovere Consulting, and Senior Manager at CBS Interactive. ♦♦ The second session was a Temple Alumni Networking Event. The location was held in a more informal atmosphere, in contrast to the earlier panel, allowing students to direct and initiate impactful conversations with Temple University Alumni-- receiving advice varying from industry growth to the transition from collegiate athletics to life after sports. Recognizing that many Owls opt to continue their education after earning their undergraduate degrees, Temple Athletics continued its partnership with KAPLAN, the leader in graduate test preparation resources, to allow student-athletes to apply for test prep courses at no cost. Fifteen student-athletes participated in GRE, GMAT, MCAT or LSAT prep courses throughout the spring semester.

VERIFIED AT THE RESNICK CENTER

The VERIFIED program was designed in partnership with Temple’s Career Center to provide concrete steps for student-athletes in their professional growth. After student-athletes opt in to the VERIFIED program, they are directed to complete five tasks towards their verification, in which after complete, they are afforded access to events, receive a VERIFIED-branded t-shirt, business kit, and participation in the exciting “Pro Owls” social media campaign. The students are required to fulfill the following: 1. SPORTS MEDICINE

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

VISION STATEMENT All student-athletes are entitled to the state-ofthe-art care that can be provided while here at Temple University. The Sports Medicine Team and the Team Physician collaborate in order to coordinate, provide and deliver the appropriate preventative services, rehabilitative services, and treatment options to each student-athlete in a professional setting. The NCAA, affiliated conferences and the University have specific guidelines that must be followed by the Athletics Department, team physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, and student-athletes. It is the goal of the Sports Medicine Team to keep each student-athlete safe, healthy, and injury-free. In the event of an injury or illness, the Sports Medicine Team will provide quality medical care that enables the student-athlete to return to full participation in not only the sports world but also the classroom.

MISSION STATEMENT To provide a combination of Strength & Speed disciplines in a safe manner that will enable Temple University to possess the strongest, fastest, and most explosive college athletes in the nation - PERIOD.

MISSION STATEMENT As a highly motivated team of professionals, we strive to provide an excellent standard of care to all our Temple student-athletes, who compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletic competition, and in doing so aid in developing outstanding leadership experiences for our Temple Owls. Through sound medical and rehabilitative principles, excellent care, and proper consideration given to both the personal and team goals of each student-athlete, this goal can be achieved.

METHODOLOGY Temple University Strength & Conditioning Department’s goal is to enhance athletic performance through 6 components: strength training, power and explosion development, flexibility, speed & agility training, core training, and nutrition; combined with injury prevention, increased confidence and a positive self image. Our purpose is to train athletes for their maximal performance in athletic competition. The role of this department is to put to action the highest level of education and resources needed to maintain the optimal level of competition for each individual athlete. The foundation of Owl Strength & Conditioning is based on the tenets of Accountability, Consistency, Organi-zation, Competition, Education, and Atttitude. We utilize Team-Based Training because having teams lift together provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills, and a competitive environment that will carry over to the field of play. We want to cultivate an atmosphere where the athlete is constantly provided feedback and can evaluate him/herself for weaknesses and able to put in the extra work to correct or modify any deficiencies in order to develop better athleticism for their particular sport.

POWERPONG

For the second year, Temple SAAC hosted the PowerPong tournament, an event combining an educational experience with the opportunity to support the local community while promoting safe and smart decisions in the college environment. In addition to a fundraising tournament, Temple welcomed a special guest from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving. Proceeds from the event were donated to Mother’s Against Drunk Driving.

WALK TU

Temple student-athletes and coaches joined in the second annual "WalkTU" event to raise awareness around sexual violence on Wednesday. WalkTU evolved from thoughtful conversations around a popular awareness-raising event, Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. "Walk A Mile," as it came to be known, was an opportunity for male-identified allies to participate in an event that was intended to draw attention to violence against women. The event initiated important dialogue around allyship, inclusion, and representation. WalkTU emerged from that dialogue as a Temple-specific event intentionally designed to include everyone within our campus community and create space for all survivors of sexual violence.

FLOWERS FOR KATIE’S MOM

Track and field senior Katie Pinson gathered together with members of the Temple community on to hold the second-annual planting ceremony in honor of her mother, who passed away in Spring 2015. Pinson spearheaded a campaign to raise money for Women in Transition, through the purchase and planting of flowers at Temple Sports Complex. Pinson’s mother was an avid gardener and it is Pinson’s hope that the flowers are a reminder of the importance of philanthropy and making a difference in your local community. Pinson chose to donate the profits to Women in Transition because it is within our local community and because the organization is dedicated to assisting women and children who have been victims of domestic violent, substance abuse, and poverty.

In an era when colleges and universities strive to recruit elite student-athletes and coaches, facilities have become a critical component of success. Building and maintaining outstanding facilities is integral to attracting and retaining top-tier talent. Facility improvements within Temple Athletics have been substantial over the last few years, including our recent completion of The NYC Angels student-athlete lounge, located within McGonigle Hall. Temple Athletics regularly assesses Temple’s facilities in order to provide the best venues for our students to train and compete. Private giving through the Temple Owl Club is pivotal for success of all future projects. To learn more about supporting a specific project, please contact the Temple Owl Club at 215-204-CLUB (2582).

2017-18 OWL CLUB MOMENTS OF IMPACT The Temple Owl Club held its annual Angels of Diamonds dinners in Philadelphia and NYC this year—generating over $200,000 in support toward student-athlete welfare initiatives.

Donations from the NYC Angels group in fiscal year 2017 allowed for the opening of the new student-athlete lounge, unveiled in January 2018 as a place for Temple Owls to rest and study in, in between classes, training, practices and student activities. The 33rd Annual Temple Owl Club Golf Classic brought together Temple Athletics supporters at the official home of Temple Golf, the 1912 Club, for a day of golf and Temple pride. Net proceeds each year support student-athlete initiatives through the Owl Club.

ENDOWMENTS Endowments are gifts that keep on giving. Endowments are permanently invested by Temple University and generate earnings and interest for the purpose you choose to support; scholarships, coaches, facility maintenance, sport-specific program support, and much more. A gift to the endowment program is invested into a pool of funds managed by the University. A portion of the earnings from the investment provides annual support to the designated area. The remaining earnings are reinvested to grow the endowment to provide support in perpetuity. To learn more about establishing an Endowment Fund or supporting an existing fund, please contact the Temple Owl Club at 215-204-CLUB (2582).

FOREVER OWLS/GIFT PLANNING Forever Owls and gift planning provides the opportunity to establish an enduring legacy through long-term philanthropic support of Temple Athletics. Remembering Temple Athletics in a will or living trust is an accessible and easy way to express your support. Special arrangements may enable you to plan a gift that will reduce taxes on your estate, provide capital support, or establish an endowment in your name or in memory of a loved one. Whichever option you choose, a bequest costs nothing now and yet gives the immediate satisfaction of achieving your philanthropic goals, while providing critical financial support to Temple Athletics. If you have included Temple Athletics in your estate plans or to learn more about leaving a legacy, please contact the Temple Owl Club at 215-204-CLUB (2582).

T-CLUB MISSION

The mission of the T-Club is to provide letterwinners and former student-athletes the opportunity to foster and maintain a lifetime relationship with the Temple Athletics community, including their teammates, coaches and the University as a whole. T-Club initiatives aim to strengthen the bond between Temple letterwinners, enhance the history and traditions of Temple University, and create a culture where members feel inspired to return and contribute to the success of Temple Athletics. A T-Club relaunch is planned for Fall 2018.
