Each spring, over 100 bright faces enter the city limits of Temple,Texas…and also enter a residency or fellowship program at Baylor Scott & White Health. Some are single, looking for prime shopping and nightlife, while others arrive with families looking for fun water parks and day cares. In every case, the next few years will determine if they choose to make this area home, even after their program has completed. That knowledge was what sparked the idea of a community-wide campaign to “Welcome Our New Doctors” for Rod Henry, who is himself a newcomer to Temple and new president of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. This month, through the combined efforts of various city, business, educational and organizational partners, Temple will roll out a unified message on hundreds of banners and signs across town. The goal is that while these new residents are shopping at Temple Mall, going to a movie at Cinemark or going to church at First Baptist, their first impression of this friendly community will be a lasting one. This city-wide campaign serves to complement the increasingly successful annual Baylor Scott & White Community Showcase. Now in its third year, the Community Showcase

helps residents know where to shop, live, worship or send their kids to school, and it’s not uncommon to hear previous residents say, “I wish they had this when I first came to town!” Scheduled for June 27 at the Cultural Activities Center, booth spaces are nearly sold out and those interested in participating should contact the Chamber immediately. If your business is looking for other ways to cater to these new arrivals, then members of the Temple Chamber of Commerce should take advantage of the complimentary coupon portal on TempleTX.org, which will be promoted during orientation at Baylor Scott and White Health. In addition, submitting events to the “Community Calendar” is available to everyone and a great way to include the residents on what’s happening in our area. All of these efforts follow the mission of the Temple Chamber of Commerce in “preserving, protecting & promoting a business friendly environment, free of obstacles to growth and development,” which as a newcomer to Temple himself, Rod is hopeful will make an impact after entering the city limits.

Baylor Scott & White Community Showcase Friday, June 27 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Cultural Activities Center For more information and to reserve your booth for this exciting event, please contact Mikie Cummings, Director of Programs & Services, at (254) 773-2105 or email mikie@templetx.org.

BUSINESS NETWORKING BREAKFAST Wednesday, May 7 6:45 am Sponsored by:

Join fellow Temple Chamber of Commerce members as they promote their businesses and services to over 400 new and existing Baylor Scott & White Health Residents, Fellows and Senior Staff.

Message From the President “I am looking forward to welcoming the new residents and fellows of Baylor Scott & White Health to Temple. There will be single professionals, couples, and families who will be searching for people, places and businesses to help them settle in and feel at home. They will be buying homes, renting apartments, shopping for clothes, groceries, cars, furniture, looking for schools, parks and recreation. In other words, becoming a part of our community. I remember how scrambled I felt as a new Texan trying to find everything from a veterinarian to a place to have a car inspection done. To my astonishment, people stepped up and helped my wife and me…constantly…expecting nothing in return. That’s the amazing thing about Temple, Texas. You will not find a more welcoming and friendly place. Let’s be sure all of us help out our newcomers. We want them to feel what a real hometown is like! Temple, Texas—a family friendly place to call home!”

Volunteers: Appreciating Those Serving the Community who continually enhance the business community here in Temple through their involvement, because they understand that the Chamber is as strong as the members behind it. Many efforts would not happen without volunteers and I am personally appreciative of all they do!” On Tuesday,April 22, the Chamber will recognize all of its volunteers by inviting them to a come and go reception at the Chamber office. This is just one small way of showing appreciation for all they do because… VOLUNTEERS MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!

The Oxford definition of a volunteer is, “A person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task,” and many would go on to say that a true volunteer believes in the cause they serve…often going unnoticed…because they would do it whether or not anyone was watching. Volunteers play an essential role in helping the Temple Chamber of Commerce succeed, whether they serve on a committee, sponsor a function, or just step in when extra help is needed. As Kenny McCarty, Chair of the 2013 Board of Directors, noted,“Our volunteers are dedicated to enrich the events and membership of the Chamber, and we are grateful of the hours put into making various events run smoothly. As Past Chair, I can look back over 2013 and see many

How Do Job Seekers and Employers Connect Today? By: Jonathan Logue, Temple Parks & Leisure Services

Texas is a leader in job growth nationally and has a lower unemployment rate than the norm. So, where are job seekers and employers connecting in Central Texas? What tools are being used in today’s employment market that result in job seekers finding jobs and employers finding quality employees? The internet and computer technology has transformed how employers and job seekers are intersecting today. Long gone are the days of candidates pounding the pavement with resume in hand, hoping to meet the hiring manager. The entire process has virtually moved online through job boards, online networking and social media. The #1 job site worldwide is www.indeed.com. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are posted to this site weekly. Indeed is very similar to a Google search. Input what type of job you are seeking and desired geographic location, and with a click of a mouse your job listings will populate instantly and allow you to begin the application process. Technological advances have also changed how employers and prospective employees connect with the introduction of online professional networking websites such as LinkedIn. LinkedIn’s mission is to connect the world’s professionals online. When you join LinkedIn, you will create a profile which includes a snapshot of your professional experience, and you gain access to people, jobs, news updates and industry insights. Social Media is also a great tool for employers and job seekers alike. By

using your current network of friends and acquaintances on Facebook or Twitter, a simple post could lead to a friend sharing your message with just the right person. If you need help making your job search more productive, Workforce Solutions of Central Texas is a great local resource. They host many free interactive workshops ranging from resume consultation, interviewing skills, properly completing applications, organizing your job search and navigating the many job boards to find the right position. Additional programs are available for job seekers who qualify, including educational labs to achieve a GED or upgrades in math, language, and typing tutorials. According to Jerry Haisler, Director of Workforce Solutions of Central Texas,

Although technology now plays a part of job searches, we can never forget the tried and true ways that still work today. Employment and staffing agencies are instrumental in placing

A Day Behind Economic Development With Leadership Temple By: Eric Swan & Tara Rowe, Leadership Temple Industrial Park Tour As part of the Leadership Temple program, we had Economic Development Day on March 11, and what better way to start it than with a tour by Lee Peterson, President of the Temple Economic Development Corporation (EDC). Lee guided our Leadership Temple class through the industrialzoned areas of Temple, including Temple Industrial Park, Southeast Industrial Park and various parks at Central Pointe. Many of Temple’s industrial-zoned areas are fortunate to have fully developed utilities, roads, rail lines, and even a fire station. We were also able to drive around the Panda Energy Inc. construction site and learn about the 1,000 megawatt combined-cycle power plant that will utilize the latest in technology and will be able to provide power to approximately 750,000 homes in Texas. Job’s Outlook Presentation The Temple EDC, started in 1988, is a nonprofit corporation serving as the designated economic development entity for the City of Temple. Temple EDC is a one-stop shop for all things business

development and works closely with community partners and The City of Temple seeking growth opportunities (www.choosetemple.com). Charley Ayres, Vice President of Temple EDC, gave an eye-opening presentation on the jobs outlook for our area. One thing is for sure, our area is growing! Temple MSA has a population of 417,123, with an impressive growth rate of 14.2% over the past five years. Temple is a regional employment center with 70% of the workforce commuting from outside the city. In addition to being strategically located along I-35 and easily accessible,Temple has the strong supporting infrastructure and market without the typical problems associated with urban growth and development. Temple EDC holds face-to-face meetings with area businesses to identify their growth plans, potential obstacles and to discuss workforce needs. With 67% of companies reporting an increase in employment needs, it will be important to ensure the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area has an educated and prepared workforce to meet the needs of current and future area businesses. Charley Ayres made a very important point about job skills by stating that, “If you

don’t learn, unlearn, and relearn, you will be left behind.” Small Business Presentation Dr. Ed McCaffrey, owner of Megg’s Café, stopped by our Leadership Temple class for a candid discussion about what it really means to own a small business. Located on Everton Drive in Temple, Megg’s Café opened in 2010 and is operated by the McCaffrey family. Before the McCaffrey family got into the restaurant business, Ed McCaffrey owned and operated a successful medical practice in Temple. Compared to his first business venture, Ed admits that owning a small business today is significantly harder. He talked to the class about pitfalls, business plans, proper forecasting, having adequate financing, finding decent employees, technological advances, paying employee benefits and how small businesses have been negatively impacted by the new health care laws. HEB Distribution Center HEB management was gracious to offer our class an inside-look at their Temple Distribution Center that services Central Texas and surrounding regions. Our tour was guided by a host of shift managers who walked us through the functions of their facility and day-today operations. The mere size of the warehouse was astounding, but more impressive was the efficiency and accuracy in which goods were moved in and out of the facility. The Distribution Center houses and distributes both dry and frozen goods to this region of Texas. A few of our

southern born class members decided to wait outside the frozen section of the warehouse which maintains a frigid 36 degree temperature. The tour offered a fascinating insight of the behind the scenes logistics and planning that is necessary to keep products stocked and fresh. As the City of Temple continues to focus on sustainable efforts, it was encouraging to see HEB’s commitment to recycling and donation of unused goods to regional food banks. Perry Office Plus Our tour of local companies concluded with Perry Office Plus, which services Central Texas with office supplies, furniture and much more. Perry Office Plus began in Temple in 1920 under the name American Printing. In the 1960’s, J.W. Perry purchased the company, changed the name to Perry Office Plus and expanded its reach to Belton and Killeen. Harry and Debbie Macey purchased the company in 1994 and grew the company’s service area into Waco and Bryan-College Station. In 2005, the 50,000 sq ft former Coca-Cola Bottling plant was purchased and revitalized into Perry Office Plus’ new headquarters, warehouse, distribution center, customer call center and offices. Shelli Hellinghausen, Chief Operating Officer, provided us a tour of their facilities, highlighting therestoration of the old Coca-Cola Bottling Plant and use of the space to fit their needs. We learned of the niche Perry Office Plus has found in offering expertise in office décor, office space planning and effective supply usage. Their hometown reputation and stellar service has developed a strong customer base in the region that trusts their consistent service. Perry Office Plus’ support of the local community serves as an example of why to do business locally and speaks volumes of their commitment to the City of Temple.

The Temple Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for Leadership Temple class of 2015 Leadership Temple is a series of 9 classes culminating a final group project and graduation ceremony. A Sold Out Success Story “It cannot be considered anything less than a total success no matter how you evaluate it,” is how Rod Henry, President, Temple Chamber of Commerce described the recent seminar, “How to Supervise People and Lead a Team.” The March 18 event was sold-out “even though we could have squeezed a few more in if necessary,” he said. Comments were overwhelmingly supportive of not only the content, but also the entertaining and engaging presentation from Glenn Shepard, President, Glenn Shepard Seminars, Inc. “We were

so pleased with the results that we have contracted for Glenn to come back to Bell County in March 2015,” explained Henry. “We are reaching out to local chambers to invite them to participate with us in this very worthwhile and relevant seminar.” Participant comments included: “Never been to a better workshop;“ “Like taking a drink of water from a fire hose, good stuff, but need time and opportunity to absorb it, great information and common sense;” “This was wonderful, it helped me under-

stand why people do some of the things they do;” “Glenn’s ‘generations descriptions’ were right on target and explained so much;”“I learned more in such a short amount of time about what I was doing wrong in being an effective manager, and I picked up awesome tips and great information.” Other comments included: “Great advice on how to hire and retain employees, and searching for those with soft skills;” “The information covered was practical and applicable in today’s environment, up-todate material very beneficial;” “I have Glenn Shepard poses between the staff of the Temple Chamber of Commerce after his learned more in 4 seminar at the Hilton Garden Inn. hours that I have in

years, and hope to implement and stand behind my new knowledge and opportunity to raise our company to a new level of accomplishments;” and,“Great seminar, you hit the nail on the head with approaches and generations.”

About Glenn Shepard Shepard self-published his first three books. In 2004, John Wiley & Sons of New York, the world’s largest book publisher, came calling. They published Glenn’s fourth, fifth and sixth books, and took him international. His most recent book, How to Be the Employee Your Company Can’t Live Without, became a #1 national best seller in the U.S. in 2006, and has now been published in Spanish, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Bulgarian and Korean. Shepard’s seminars have been sponsored by 146 colleges and universities in 25 states. He regularly addresses Chamber of Commerce seminars nationwide.

The Competitive Advantage By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas What’s “Competitive Advantage” really mean? Wikipedia says, “Competitive advantage occurs when an organization acquires or develops an attribute or combination of attributes that allows it to outperform its competitors.” Really? That’s not much help. Let’s figure it out! List the things you think would be competitive advantages for your business or proposed business. All those things that could make you better than your competitors fall into one of three categories: • Delivering goods or services at the lowest price • Delivering higher quality goods or services than competitors • Delivering goods or services with superior service

Price, Quality or Service!

Knowing this,

how can we be better competitors? Most small businesses can’t compete on price. Don’t try! Big companies have economy of scale. Walmart can get toothpaste from manufacturer to store for a few pennies a tube and pay the supplier less to start with, because of volume. Since we understand, small businesses cannot be the low price leader, let’s look at Quality and Service as opportunities for competitive advantage. Quality is a relative term, tied to the “Value Proposition.” That’s a big enough topic for another

time. For now, let’s agree, if you sell better products than your competitor, you can charge more; sometimes a lot more and still get the business because the customer sees “value” in the better product. Product selection is often limited by your suppliers, and you may or may not be able to find an advantage in this area. That leaves Service! The best way for a small business to compete is on Service. Why? Because, it doesn’t cost a lot more to give good service than it does to deliver bad service. What it requires is to put the customer viewpoint in your mind and clearly understand and manage the customer’s expectations. Train employees to think constantly about how they’re representing themselves and your business to the customers. It’s a lot more than a smile and asking,“How can I help you?” Understanding the expectations of the customer is critical to delivering exceptional service. When you drop clothes at the cleaners, you expect to get them back clean, fresh smelling, nicely pressed and ready to wear. You don’t expect them to have holes, rips, tears, stains or broken buttons. Later, when you find a broken button, you’re likely mad. Expectations haven’t been met. This could be avoided if employees are trained to think like customers. When accepting clothes, look for garments that might need repair, and recommend that the customer permit you to fix them. Once the cleaning is done, before hanging, reinspect for stains, wear, or

The Bloomin’ Festival, one of Central Texas’ most popular annual events, will be held on May 9th and 10th at 7th street and Avenue A in downtown Temple. The festival has been a part of the Central Texas spring landscape since 2006 and continues to grow and evolve each year. With a huge and exciting line-up of music scheduled, this year is set to be the biggest and best yet for the event. Gates open Friday at 6 pm for the first night of music. Saturday kicks off again at 10 am. The music lineup for this year’s two-day festival features a few BIG changes. The main stage will feature top country music performers on BOTH Friday and Saturday night. Friday night will be a trio of country performances, kicking off with Bri Bagwell followed by Bart Crow. The Friday night headliner will be none other than Texas Country superstar, Kevin Fowler. Performing new hits from his seventh studio album “How Country Are Ya?” set to be released in March, along with fan favorites like “Beer Bait and Ammo,” Fowler’s performance will be one to remember! Saturday night will be jam packed with Country music. The night will kick off with local favorite, Kirk Baxley Band. The Kirk Baxley Band performed and won last year’s local Texaco Country Showdown at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival. We’re excited to wel-

come Kirk Baxley on the main stage this year! Kirk Baxley will be followed by John Slaughter, Josh Grider, and Curtis Grimes. Closing out a huge night of country music will be Kyle Park. Park will be performing his latest hits from his new album “Beggin for More.” 2014 will be the largest lineup of country music ever at Bloomin’ Temple! In addition to a huge country music lineup, we’ll have Tejano performances BOTH Friday and Saturday night on our second stage! The Tejano performances Friday night will be headlined by legend, Jay Perez. The Latin Grammy award nominated artist, has won practically every award for Tejano and Latin music, including “Best Vocalist” and “Best Entertainer.” Perez is a ten time Tejano Music award winner and is sure to blow the crowd away. Saturday night will feature David Lee Garza. Townsquare Media is very excited to keep the Tejano culture and music a part of the Bloomin’ Temple Festival. Bloomin’ Temple has been a highlight of the local spring event calendar in Temple since 2006. In addition to great music performances, the weekend

defects. Note any remaining defects so the clerk can inform the customer, rather than having issues become apparent when the customer is ready to wear the garment again.“I’m sorry Ma’am, did you know this garment is worn at the collar? It’s frayed to the point where it can’t be readily repaired,” is delivering bad news, but exceptional service. You get the point, think like a customer. Many companies are run by highly structured policies and processes. This can inadvertently cause issues with customer expectations and customer service. I went into a national chain specialty store a few months ago. The clerk told me they offered a military discount. Being retired military, I took advantage of the discount. It wasn’t much, though I appreciated the gesture. When I needed something else I knew they stocked, I went back. I didn’t spend much and the discount would have been less than a buck, but when the cashier told me the policy had changed to weekends only for the discount, I was irritated. The company had set an expectation and then failed to deliver. The bottom line: You and your employees can best and most inexpensively make Service your competitive advantage. Keep smiling and if you or your folks need a refresher on customer service skills, call us at The Entrepreneur Center. We’d be delighted to help!

includes family-friendly entertainment, food, vendors, a carnival, and a kid’s zone featuring a petting zoo and pony rides. This year we are adding a Summer Dodgeball Challenge. We’ll be building out a multiple court Dodgeball Arena right in the center of the festival!
