Business Showcase Re-cap By: Kelsey Teal, Charter Real Estate, Photographs by: Skeebo Reichert
BUSINESS ESS AFTER S HOURS August 23rd: Sponsored by Precious Memories, hosted at Wildflower Country Club
Each year more and more new faces enter the Scott and White medical facilities. These new residents come from all over the United States to begin their career in the medical industry. With a new career also comes a new home town. The Temple Chamber wanted to welcome all of the new faces by introducing them to businesses around Bell County at the “We’re Temple” Business Showcase. The event was held at the Hilton Ballroom and an array of businesses displayed their services and products. The variety of business included restaurants, real estate companies, dentist offices, health and fitness clubs and gift/boutique shops. The residents received goody bags, raffle gifts and prizes. The evening was complete with refreshments and hors d’ourves. The sentiments were consistent throughout the room; the residents were thrilled with the event. Due to their busy schedules, very few are able to get out and explore the various businesses in Temple. One resident moved from New Orleans over a year ago, and was not aware of the services and businesses available throughout the city. Others said they were grateful for the event to help familiarize them with local businesses. But if you’re also new to the area, don’t worry, we have something just for you! On Saturday, September 22, the Chamber will host “We’re Central Texas”,

Clarence Martin Gym to Receive Historic Marker By: Kristi Sykora, Temple Parks and Leisure Servicees (Temple) – The Temple Historic Preservation Committee will hold a reception honoring Clarence Martin Gym as the latest recipient of a Temple Historic Marker. The reception will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. at Clarence Martin Gym (102 West Elm Avenue). The Clarence Martin Gym was originally constructed in 1935. The gym was used by the Temple School District until around 1964 as the high school gymnasium. In 1965, the high school was demolished and the City of Temple Parks and Leisure Services Department acquired the gymnasium. The department offices were housed there until the mid 1980’s when new offices were constructed at Wilson Park. Currently, the building is being used for a variety of recreation programs and recently received a new
floor. For more information about the gym’s activities and rental information, please contact Tracy Klusacek at 298-5582. The Historic Marker Program was designed to recognize historically significant structures within the city, while encouraging preservation and restoration. In order for a property to be considered for a Temple Historic Marker, the property owner must fill out an application and submit it with supporting documentation to the Historic Preservation Committee. There is a small application fee, which is currently half-off for the summer months. After an application is submitted the committee will review the pending application and make a decision. Anyone interested in learning more about Clarence Martin Gym or the
Temple Historic Marker Program is encouraged to attend. Please RSVP by calling the Temple Visitor Center at 298-5900.

Military Affairs Committee Connects With ‘The Great Place’ By: Susan Howe, Friends of the Temple Public Library Building a good strong relationship with our military neighbors at Fort Hood is the focus of the Temple Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee. The committee works throughout the year to support the military and welcome the soldiers and their families to Central Texas by attending events and ceremonies and participating in special events. Jim Granfor serves as chairman and Gary Janicek is co-chair.
Known as “The Great Place,” Fort Hood is home to almost 65,000 soldiers and family members. Although many live on base or in Killeen, thousands more live in nearby communities including Temple and are very much a part of life in Central Texas. On Aug. 9 Chamber representatives will travel to Fort Hood to participate in Hood Howdy, a welcome event to introduce incoming military families to businesses, resources and
communities in the Central Texas area. About 3,000 soldiers and family members are expected to attend this event. The annual Military Affairs Luncheon on Sept. 11 will bring military guests from Fort Hood to Temple to show appreciation for their service to our community and our nation. The committee also coordinates the Adopt-A-Unit program which matches schools, community organizations and businesses with military
units. The Chamber’s adopted units are the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and the 1st Medical Brigade.
New Members Support Military Community By: Susan Howe, Friends of the Temple Public Library
The National Mounted Warfare Foundation and The Army Marathon are new Chamber members supporting the military and connecting the military and civilian communities. The National Mounted Warfare Foundation is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of building the National Museum of Mounted Warfare and Soldier Center to be located adjacent to Fort Hood, just outside of the installation’s security perimeter for easy access for military and civilian visitors. The proposed museum will provide a unique educational experience designed to preserve and interpret the stories of mounted warfare soldiers and units that have serve Fort Hood and worldwide, and to promote the history, values and heritage of
Killeen and Central Texas. The main building will be an 85,000 – 100,000- square-foot structure with outdoor areas including vintage military vehicle walking trails, children’s play area, park, memorials and monuments. Now it its initial phase to raise the estimated $130 million needed to complete the project, the projected timeline calls for construction to begin in 2016, with completion and opening of the museum in 2019. Forecasters predict 265,000 visitors per year. The project will have a huge economic impact in Central Texas with an estimated 550 construction jobs and $49 million in construction costs; 60 permanent new jobs with $4.5 million sustained economic
impact after opening. The National Mounted Warfare Foundation offices are located in downtown Killeen at 215 W. Ave. D. Operations are managed by four full-time staff of retired members of the military along with a growing number of volunteers. For information or to donate call (254) 213-5014 or visit www.MountedWarfareFoundation.org. The Army Marathon is a new non-profit organization planning the first ever Army Marathon to raise money for qualified veterans’ charities. The inaugural event to honor soldiers and national guardsmen is scheduled for April 19, 2013. The 26.2 mile run from Killeen to Temple will attract thousands of military and civil-
ian runners from across the country. Future events will be held on the weekend nearest to April 19 which is the date of the battle of Lexington and Concord which started the American Revolution. Local advisors include LTG Don Jones and LTG Dave Palmer. For additional information go to www.thearmymarathon.com or contact Ed Bandas at 210-632-2800 or ed@edbandas.com.
