Rod Henry, the new President of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, is a veteran of developing business/community relationships. He has more than 30 years of chamber experience and spent 21 of them as Chamber President for Terre Haute, IN . Carol Mouché (Chisholm Trail Chorus, Sweet Adelines International) caught up with Rod between meetings to learn what he hopes to accomplish here. Chamber members? Q: What attracted you to Temple? To arrange for a date, simply call Sheila at the Chamber of Commerce office. Q: Tell us some of your goals for the coming year. A : My initial focus will be on 5 essential strategies to provide for successful leadership, management and planning: (1) Membership retention/expansion: define the Chamber’s value and outline why we deserve support. (2) Strategic direction: what are our short- and long-term plans? (3) Resource development: do we have the staff and financial capabilities? (4) Constituency outreach: where have we been, where are we now and where do we want to go? (5) Partnership development. (cont. on pg. 5)
“Vote Yes” For Our Kids With the Tax Ratification Election With the hope of growing our schools in Temple, the Board of Directors of the Temple Chamber of Commerce joined many others in endorsing the passage of the Tax Ratification Election (TRE). We encourage you to do the same and “Vote Yes” on September 21. The TRE is needed to continue the transformation of Temple schools that is part of the ten-year strategic plan that began with passage of the school bonds in 2007 and 2011. A bond can only pay for long-term capital projects
like new and renovated facilities, furniture, and major repairs. Funds from the TRE will be used to fill the new buildings with computers and ipads for our children, security officers, new buses and enhanced educational and library resources. The TRE will continue the transformation of Temple schools by ensuring our children have the best possible 21st Century educational programs to go along with the new facilities. (cont. on pg. 6)

and the fact that it has yielded such a fan base that I am able to grow the business in just a little over a year has been awesome. What’s been the most challenging aspect of being a business owner? It can be difficult to balance all aspects of your life, especially as a sole proprietor. I always strive to do and be the best I can. The hardest lesson to learn is that you cannot please everyone. What have you learned about yourself ? I learned I am more capable than I have given myself credit in the past, but I have also learned that I cannot do everything. It is important to train people and trust they will do what is best for your company. Hire well and your business will thrive. Brigadier General Clark W. LeMasters, Jr., Commanding General of the 13th Sustainment Command, the Fort Hood partner unit to the City of Temple, will be the guest speaker for the 2013 Military Appreciation Luncheon on Sept. 17. The Military Affairs Committee was fortunate to secure Brig. Gen. LeMasters as the guest speaker for this year’s luncheon and kick off for the Chamber’s Military Toy Drive. Fort Hood is known as the Great Place. This is largely due to the work of the Soldiers and their families and the communities surrounding Fort Hood. Temple is a great place for Soldiers and their families to call home.
“The Military Affairs Luncheon is an outstanding opportunity to show our respect and gratitude for our neighbors from Fort Hood who lay their lives on the line for all of us,” Jim Granfor, Military Affairs Committee chair, said. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased via the Temple Chamber of Commerce website at www.TempleTX.org, by calling (254) 7732105 or stopping by the office at 2 N. 5th Street in downtown Temple. Tickets may also be bought and donated to Fort Hood soldiers for them to enjoy the luncheon. Marketing opportunities are also available by calling Judy Covington at the Chamber office. Prior to his arrival at Fort Hood in July 2012, Brig. Gen. LeMasters was Chief of Ordnance and Commandant of the U.S. Army Ordnance School. His military career began with commission as a 2nd Lt. in 1982 from the ROTC program at Marion Military Institute, Marion, Alabama. He completed his Bachelors degree in Chemistry at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland and holds Masters Degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology and the Army War College. In addition to his assignments throughout the U.S., he has served overseas in Germany, Iraq, Qatar and Afghanistan.

Chamber President Launches “Listening Tour” To Help Plan Organization’s Future Q: How do you envision the Chamber working to promote a more integrated regional approach to business support and development? A: By design, chambers of commerce must be involved in taking a broader look at what it takes to advance a community. We truly do live in a global economy and can no longer isolate ourselves to just what’s within our jurisdictional boundaries. To accomplish this task, you must build relationships and a common understanding of what each participant brings to the table, and what all hope to take away from their involvement … whether it is joint promotion for jobs, consistent message on legislative issues or partnership on efforts to advance the regional economy or quality of place. Q: What specific steps will the Chamber take to support the starting of new businesses in Temple? A: We have excellent organizations already functioning in this arena. We will develop partnerships and support their efforts. At the same time, it is incumbent upon the Chamber to look at the “quality of place” initiatives and incorporate what we can into our business plan to improve the attractiveness of our community as the ideal location for economic investment and new jobs! Q: Regarding Chamber promotion and marketing: do you have any thoughts on fund-raising and sponsorships?
(cont. from pg. 1)
A: When I interviewed for the Temple opportunity, I discussed my approach when considering a new initiative, event or activity, as well as reevaluating an existing program. I ask two very simple questions. First: does it add value to our purpose as a chamber of commerce? Second: will it drive non-dues revenue for the organization? Those that can be answered yes for both will rank high. I do not believe in nickel & diming our customers, but to fairly price our product and service to meet the growing needs we have as an organization. We must look at every avenue available to generate non-dues revenue as a tool to attract additional financial support and to keep our membership investment structure at a reasonable level. Q: Please tell us a little more about you and your family. A: My wife, Benita, is an outstanding professional educator. Because of all of the change that has occurred in our lives the past two months, she is going to take some time off, support me in my new role with the Temple Chamber, get the house organized and volunteer in various roles in the community. My son Rick and his wife Emily live in Oregon. My daughter Katie and her husband Jared live in Indianapolis. We also have an 18-month-old Great Dane, Isabella, and a tiger cat, Einstein. My hobbies include traveling, all things Disney (especially Mickey Mouse), reading, history and wine.

“Flowers mean love and at the Ronald McDonald House we are all about love and families, so the event is a great fit for us,” said Susan Bolton, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House of Temple. “Everyone is always so happy when they stop by. Benefits of Volunteering By: Tanya Gray, Keep Temple Beautiful At a time when many non-profits are struggling to make ends meet, volunteers continue to be our most important resource. Just a few hours can make a huge difference in the community ... your community. Such a selfless act demonstrates the impact we can make as individuals. One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network and boost your social skills. Not many people realize that volunteering has a happiness affect. Helping others, kindles happiness as many studies have demonstrated. When researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness in a large group of American adults, they found the more people volunteered, the happier they were, according to a study in Social Science and Medicine. Compared with people who never volunteered, the odds of being
“very happy” rose 7% among those who volunteer monthly and 12% for people who volunteer every two to four weeks. Among weekly volunteers, 16% felt very happy—a hike in happiness comparable to having an income of $75,000–$100,000 versus $20,000, say the researchers. Keep Temple Beautiful (KTB) has numerous initiatives seeking enthusiastic volunteers. On September 13th as part of National Day of Service & Day of Caring we are requesting volunteers to assist in painting, landscaping, removing brush and debris, etc. This project will be conducted in two phases. The other will take place for Make A Difference Day in October, so we are requesting volunteers to help out on both projects. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Keep Temple Beautiful and we appreciate all that you do. For that reason, we would like to commend A New Day Fellowship Church on the adoption of North 23rd Street as part of KTB's AdoptA-Street program. The congregation has taken part in two clean-ups in the last several months and we applaud their efforts. Because we have such diverse volunteer opportunities, volunteering with us can also help you build upon skills you already have while using them to benefit the greater community. To learn more about the many programs and projects that KTB offers, become a volunteer or member call (254) 493-4000 or www.keeptemplebeautiful.org. Hard Work Pays Off With the Central Texas Bark Park By: Kristi Sykora, Temple Parks and Leisure Services Temple’s first public dog park, the Central Texas Bark Park, opened August 10, 2013. The Bark Park was made possible by the Leadership Temple Class of 2012 bringing community support and donations together to make this park a reality. The Central Texas Bark Park is located in Lions Park (4320 Lions Park Road) across from the Temple Rotary South All Access Playground and softball fields. The park is free to enter and open daily from
dark to dusk. It consists of a fenced one-acre section for large dogs and a half-acre section for small dogs. Each side has green grass, agility equipment, benches, a water fountain and clean up stations. “We wanted to give back to the community and provide something new to the area. Dog parks provide a great place for outdoor recreation and socialization for both people and their pets”, said Leadership Temple 2012 Class Member, Ashley Williams. “The park is a vision that
was long in coming and certainly adds to Temple’s quality of place. I think we have something to really be proud of,” said Leadership Temple Member 2012 Class Member, Stan Giles. “We are very thankful for the donations and support from Mars Petcare, iZone, Temple Founder Lions Club, Terrell Granite, Earthstones Granite, Belton Small Animal Clinic, Sit Means Sit, Hilton Garden Inn, BBVA Compass, Extraco Banks, Almost Home Pet Resort, Temple Chamber of Commerce, Temple Parks Foundation, Cultural Activities Center,Temple Parks
and Leisure Services and the many other individuals that supported our fundraising events,” said Williams. “This project is just another example of how the community comes together to build great facilities in our park system. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated organizations and individuals to help make Temple an even better place to live,” said Parks and Leisure Services Director, Ken Cicora. Keys to Winning Arguments By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas
Life would be great, if only everyone else agreed with you! That is not reality. The reality is that people have different opinions. These opinions are based on the environment in which one grew up, including parents, friends and teachers; coupled with what that person studied in school and life experiences gained along the way. People’s opinions are influences by media, religion, books, movies and a bunch of other stuff. It is inevitable that in the course of our business and personal lives, we will encounter people with wildly different values and opinions based on those values. So, how do we win them over to our way of thinking? Lots of people use the “Shouting Match” method. This usually winds up without a positive result and usually both parties go away mad. Not conducive to doing business. We need to find a smarter way. When we hear something that doesn’t align with our beliefs, the initial impulse and what you learned in debate (or law school), is to deliver your counterpoint. Then you
give evidence to back it up. Then you conclude, summarizing why the other person is wrong. This sets the stage for Win-Lose at best and often results in a Lose-Lose situation. There is no longer a way to cooperate to produce a positive result. Dale Carnegie said, “The best way to win an argument is to avoid it.” Here is a technique that will help you do that. Listening & Thinking 1. When you hear the other person’s opinion and your jaw tightens, resist the urge to speak. 2. Think about what you feel and why you feel that way. 3. Give the other person a look to show you are considering their point of view. Nod your head slightly. 4. In your head, collect the facts that support your feeling. 5. Think about what your beliefs have in common with the other person. Speaking & Convincing 6. Begin with, “I appreciate your point of view.” OR “I understand why you would think that way.” 7. Then give a statement of agreement like, “I think we may both want the same result.” 8. Now is the time to give your facts in the form of a question, “Did you know that…?” This opens the other person’s mind to hear your evidence. 9. After all the facts are shared, conclude with, Therefore, I think that … (state your opinion)!
For example, the conversation on gun control might go something like this; Other person: Our world is so dangerous because so many idiots are out there with guns, shooting innocent people!!! We need strong gun control laws! You: (speaking calmly, after pausing to consider and think) “I think we both agree that innocent people getting hurt or killed by guns, is terrible.” Now for the facts, “Did you know that the United States is third among all countries in murder?” Though, when you remove the statistics from only the four cities of Detroit, Chicago, Washington, DC and New Orleans, the murder rate drops to fourth from the bottom. Interestingly, all four cities have the toughest gun control laws in our nation.” Now you conclude,
“Vote Yes” For Our Kids With the Tax Ratification Election
“Therefore, I am not convinced that gun control is the answer to keeping innocent people from being killed.” The situation has been defused and the other person realizes they don’t have a fact-based opinion. If they want to continue to believe in their point of view, they will have to discount the facts. This technique effectively reframes the encounter from a debate or argument into a conversation that addresses a mutual concern. It may seem a little awkward at first, but the more you practice these steps, the better you will get at finding mutual ground and building a fact-based position around your point of view. Here is a local resource for in-depth training on this technique and many other personal relationship building techniques. The Dale Carnegie Course is taught a couple of time a year in Temple. Passage of the TRE will continue the transformation of the Temple ISD to a higher level of excellence. The process began with successful bond issues in 2007 and 2011 that were focused, on budget, and on time. Support of the TRE will ... • Allow continuation of the highly successful ACE program, an after-school initiative that serves over 3,000 students per year with tutoring, robotics and college visits. Previously funded with a state grant, ACE will expire without the support of the TRE • Prepare today's students for the global workplace with modern equipment and cutting edge curriculum. TRE funds will purchase mini-laptops and IPADS for K-12, upgrade Science labs, expand the Career & Technology Health Science program, expand library collections, and provide band and orchestra instruments to those who cannot afford them • Make Temple Elementary Schools safer by adding more safety personnel to patrol campuses, lead anti-drug programs, anti-bullying programs, provide counseling for students, organize emergency response plans, and lead student safety drills • Provide funds to purchase new school buses and put the district back on track in its replacement plan. Some buses have been in service since 1992! One-half the district's 79 buses are coming to the end of their 15-year replacement cycle and will soon need to be replaced.
