Join Leadership Temple 2013! By: Melissa Davis, Charter The Chamber of Commerce will be soon begin seeking community to leaders to join the Leadership Temple 2013 program. Leadership Temple is a structured program, comprising nine months of organized, educational activities, team building and volunteerism. The class gets the opportunity to learn more about our community through monthly class days where members have the chance to see varied aspects of our community from behind the scenes. These trips teach participants more about the local government, culture, community service and local industry. The purpose of the program, as stated on the Chamber website, is to seek out the finest leaders and potential leaders from all aspects of the Temple community and prepare
Real Estate them to participate in communityoriented decision-making activities and positions. Leadership Temple is about much more than networking. “A key component to leadership is relationships, our interaction with others and to our environment. Leadership Temple does more than just simply orientate you to the community it really provides you with an opportunity to build relationships. That network within the community that will provide resource and support for you both professionally and personally,” said class member Charley Ayres, Temple Economic Development. One of the most significant components of the program is the coordination and completion of an outside project that benefits the community. This
year’s class chose to initiate the process of building a dog park in Temple in an effort to add to the ‘quality of place’ residents have in the community. After deciding on the project, the class pooled their talents to raise funds and awareness. Aside from drawings, fundraising dinners and corporate sponsorships, the group has entered the City of Temple in an internet contest to win $100,000 for the park. Citizens can vote twice daily for our city to receive funds from Petsafe, Inc. to complete the dog park. The contest ends on June 14th. Area residents are encouraged to vote daily at www.petsafe.net/barkforyourpark. With $45,000 left to raise, every vote helps!

Fresh Produce Ripe For Picking At Local Farmers Markets By: Kristen Reichert, Photo by Skeebo Buying fresh, organic food has caused a rise in farmers market for Bell County. With so many new markets open, residents have more opportunities than ever to find locally grown fruits, vegetables and more. Water Street Farmers Market, located behind The Gin at Nolan Creek in Belton, features a variety of booths including Yard Bird Jerky and Soggy Bottom Goat Farms. Created by retired restaurant owner, Preston Reichert, Yard Bird Jerky is a tender chicken jerky available in original spice or the gluten-free mild spice blend. Soggy Bottom Goat Farms provide several different flavors of goat cheese, such as the popular Texican Blend. This market is open on Saturdays from 8:00 am to noon, and more informa-
tion is available on their Facebook page. Another market located in Belton as part of the Bell Farmers Market Association is located at the corner of Central and Penelope Street. This market is also open on the third Saturday of the month from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, and they are a certified farmers market through the Texas Department of Agriculture. The Temple Farmers Market on 212 S. Main is also part of this association, and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Both of these markets are open in May through September or October, depending on the season. More information on certified farmers markets in the state can be found at www.gotexan.org. Scott and White is also sponsoring a market from
9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesdays, May 16th through August 29th, located in the shady lawn area north of the Vasicek Cancer Treatment Center at the Temple Clinic campus. Besides farm-fresh produce, market-goers can find jams, cheeses and pickled goods. Glorified Granola, Texas Cheese House and Walker Honey Farm are a few of the specialty items found here. Attendees receive free recipes and chances to enter drawings through Scott and White. With a market open almost every day of the week, Bell County residents can easily skip the supermarket crowds and buy local.
Temple is Attracting Many Regional, State & National Conventions By: Nancy Glover, Temple Convention Temple may be considered a small town by many standards, but it is appealing to many regional, state and national conventions. Last September, Temple was host to the Texas Education Extension Association State Convention, which united more than 400 women from around the state to learn about a variety of topics from women’s health to quilting. Temple’s successful bid to host that convention was placed in late 2008, with competing cities vying to host this large group. Today, the Texas Brazos Trail, a regional tourism organization, will be holding their 1st Annual Heritage Tourism Conference, History in the Making, Using the “New” to Promote the “Old”, at the Hilton Garden Inn. The conference aims to educate tourism industry professionals on heritage tourism issues and the importance of technology
& Visitors Bureau and social media in the industry. Conference organizers hope to see upwards of 100 people in attendance. In mid June, the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society will hold its National Convention in Temple at the Mayborn Convention Center. This is an independent non-profit corporation devoted to preserving, studying and sharing information about all aspects of the former Santa Fe Railway, from its rich history and fascinating operations to its distinctive equipment and facilities. The four day convention will feature workshops, field trips and seminars designed to further this mission. With a very convenient location, more than 150,000 square feet of meeting space and 1800 guest rooms, Temple is very attractive to meeting and convention planners. Next year, Temple will
host the Eastern Louisiana Northern Texas Synod of the Lutheran Church State Convention, and in 2013 the Texas Taxidermy Association State Convention will be held here. Many more bids are currently in the works. The CVB has worked diligently to address issues and overcome objections in order to compete with larger “destination” cities. Tourism is the 3rd largest industry in Texas, and in Bell County the tourism industry provides over 4,400 jobs, brings in $7 million in local tax revenue and exceeds $393 million in direct spending. In Temple, overnight tourists spend $88 per day. The positive impact on the local economy will help sustain economic growth in the future, and the Temple CVB will continue to work hard to bring more events like these to Temple!
