All Around Town By: Sonny Jaramillo, Scott & White Healthcare Foundation
Have
you driven around town lately and observed some new construction or should I say demolition and asked yourself….”What is going on there?” We will now have the answers to those types of questions. Beginning this month, I will be writing this article about what is going on around our town. Those of you out there who know of something going on or a new business coming to town or just have a question about some new construction, you can contact me at rjaramillo@sw.org Let me start with some exciting news! Wal-Mart has purchased 30 acres of land on W. Adams across from the BaylorScott &White Pediatric Clinic and will begin construction of a new WalMart store in the near future. Now that may be exciting for lots of folks who live in that area, but I also bet there will be some traffic issues; so be prepared and slow down. Another great benefit for Temple in the way of new employment opportunities and sales tax revenue! Traffic congestion has been challenging along the elevated portion of IH35 and from Salado to Waco, but wait till the real demolition and road construction begins in Temple. In the long run this interstate renewal plan will be great for Temple, but in the meantime be prepared for detours, slower traffic and accidents. The Temple Police Department and Fire Department have been preparing for these events for months working with the Texas Department of Transportation
in anticipation of the construction timetables. The Veterans Administration has opened some new offices in the old headquarters office building of CEFCO on Scott Blvd. A local developer purchased the building and remodeled it specifically for the VA who has been looking to make a long term lease arrangement of some administrative offices for several months. A new restaurant is coming to West Temple, called The Good Life Bakery Café, which will be located next to Painting with a Twist on West Adams and will open in a few weeks. The café will be offering fresh sandwiches, breads, salads, pizza and soups and salads. Wilson Art LLC has recently completed the purchase of Durcon in Taylor TX. Durcon makes high performance work surfaces and sinks used for labs and research facilities. Adorn, a new home décor store just opened in the Tuscan Square shopping center which is owned and operated by Jenny Arnold. And, as reported last month at the Temple Chamber Breakfast Networking event, The Regional Center for Innovation and Commercialization (RCIC) Help Project has been formed and is the primary broker in luring companies and promoting economic development in the region comprising of Temple, Bryan College Station and the Waco areas. The RCIC has been funded for 2 years with an investment from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund. Temple’s representatives to the RCIS will be Charlette Stallworth from BaylorScott& White Health, Gregg Strasburger and Wendell Williams from the Temple Health & Bio Science District. It’s really fun to see the changes that continue to come to our community and I will do my best to keep everyone informed of the latest and greatest things that are happening in Temple! “Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”

*Gym-X and Titan Total Training are not new to Temple, but both centers are expanding and changing to offer more new equipment and special programs to help you reach your fitness goals. Gym X is under new ownership and is planning a grand opening of the all-new fitness club on Dec. 13. Paul Crane, the new owner, described Gym X Temple as “a clean, friendly, and affordable results oriented fitness establishment for the
whole family. Open all day, every day.” The 20,000 square foot facility has been completely re-done and features more than 65 pieces of cardio equipment, including the Precor AMT. There are two separate cardio areas. One is a cardio theater where clients can watch movies while doing cardio, and the other is a dim-lit cardio room with 65 inch televisions. The ROC-IT Hoist and Technogym circuts are two of the many circuts for full body workouts in the facility. Other features include a functional area, a strength training area, two full sets of dumbbells, and full VIP tanning rooms with top-of-theline HEX tanning beds and a kid zone with staff. *Titan Total Training Wellness Center, located just next door to Gym X, is undergoing a huge expansion which should be complete in January. Ike Shaw started the business as an all-out-
door workout in a parking lot. After experiencing a broken neck and an extremely hot summer, he moved the business inside, offering one-on-one and group training classes. Known as T3 Boot Camp, the program provides 50-minute classes which incorporate exercises to work the entire body. Classes include conditioning, toning, strength training, and increased agility and flexibility. The business has shown continued growth and last year purchased the Extreme Performance fitness center. When the two businesses are fully merged the workout area will increase from 5,000 to 13,000 square feet. In addition to Boot Camp, Titan offers Body Pump, RPM Spin, TRX Training, Yoga and Hot Yoga, Zumba, Personal Training Studio and a Smoothie Bar. Titan is open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closing early on Friday. Weekend classes also are available. By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas
The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas (TEC) is a non-profit economic Development program designed to grow and support the entrepreneurial spirit in the Central Texas region.
It is a collaborative effort and sponsored by the City of Temple, Temple Economic Development Corporation, the Temple College Foundation and the Temple Chamber of Commerce. The mission of The Entrepreneur Center is “to foster and facilitate the creation and development of new businesses and growth of existing businesses in order to enrich the communities’ economic health within these eight counties of Central Texas: Bell, Burnet, Coryell, Falls, Lampasas, McLennan Milam and Williamson.” If you are thinking about starting a business, The Entrepreneur Center should be your first step. TEC provides free initial consultation for prospective business startups. Following this initial assessment, you may elect to become a client and enjoy the affordable help to set guidelines, goals and objectives to get your business growing quickly. Once you have a firm direction and an established business structure you may elect to get some help to avoid some of the growing pains and expedite the process. You may have heard the term
Business Incubator or Business Accelerator. The difference is in name, not function. Both are a type of educational institution, teaching hands-on entrepreneurial skills to individual business owners, in a very precise method rather than generalized knowl-
The Entrepreneur Center offers standard and customizable programs for: • Helping prospective new business owners decide if the Entrepreneur lifestyle is a good fit • Helping develop possible new ventures • Evaluating whether to buy an existing business • Getting a new business started • Managing your new or existing business • Growing your existing business edge. The methodology only trains skills and knowledge areas that the
business owner doesn’t already, in a customized way. Incubators/Accelerators “quick start” businesses and “accelerate” their growth by maintaining an inventory of business experts, consultants, advisors, procedures, methodologies, state-ofthe-art technologies and business resources that companies are likely to require in the growth process.TEC provides that service to our clients. Located in historic downtown Temple,TEC provides affordable services to on-site tenants, and to “virtual” tenants who do not office on the property. The Entrepreneur Center offers a quality business environment and features furnished offices quipped with full technology capabilities, conference rooms, a community area and a kitchen. Services in many business categories are available to clients. For example, a satellite office of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is located on the premises with a full-time counselor, who provides assessments and intensive one-on-one counseling to both existing business owners and prospective new entrepreneurs, along with information and guidance for Small Business Administration loans.
Upon acceptance into the TEC program, clients are assisted with the development and evaluation of their business and strategic plans. Regular meetings are scheduled with clients to help identify barriers as they arise and develop solutions. Dependent upon its business plan, each company will “graduate” in 1-3 years as they stabilize and grow to become a self-sufficient part of the local business community. Let The Entrepreneur Center help you turn your dream into a plan with action steps, to take you to where you want to be in your business.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this program or would like to know more, please contact us at 254598-7400 or visit www.TECcentex.com.
