With Glenn Shepard

On January 24, the Temple Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2014 Salute to Business at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. In the words of Kenny McCarty, 2013 Chair of the Board, “This is an opportunity for the business community, for members of the Temple Chamber to join together to celebrate our rich heritage, past accomplishments, present endeavors and exciting plans for growth and development.” These present endeavors and plans were further encouraged by Drayton McLane, Jr., the guest speaker for the evening. Drayton challenged the audience, as business owners, residents and leaders in the community, to make 2014 through 2025 years of growth and development for Temple. The highlight of the 2014 Salute to Business was when

A new feature of the Salute to Business, this award recognizes an individual who truly exemplifies servant leadership in the Temple community, who gives without regard to receiving, and who has provided guidance and leadership to advance the community we all call home. From the new addition of the Reception Sponsors to those working behind the scenes, each contribution allows the Chamber to carry out its mission of “Serving the business community by preserving, protecting and promoting a business friendly environment, free of obstacles to growth and development.” There is much about 2013 to look back on with pride, but as Drayton reminded us, we are never more vulnerable than when we're successful. May we take that to heart and continue the hard work and commitment in making Temple,Texas a great place to live, work, play, pray and call home!

Local Entrepreneur Center Brings Powerful New Business Mindset Training Program to Central Texas By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas introduces this revolutionary new learning program designed to inspire and engage you in the fundamental concepts of an entrepreneurial mindset and the unlimited opportunities it can provide. This is a timely reminder that entrepreneurship can empower ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, while reminding us that building new companies and creating new jobs will lead to a brighter future and a stronger Central Texas economy. This course and its groundbreaking curriculum are major shifts in the way we learn about Entrepreneuring and business building. You may not consider yourself an entrepreneur, yet if you are the principle leader or decision maker in any business or department within a business, you must be an entrepreneur in order to continue to grow your business. If you aspire to a leadership role in your company, you can also benefit by thinking like an entrepreneur or owner rather than an employee. And finally, if you are thinking about branching out on your own, you must have the entrepreneurial mindset and business building skills to succeed. Entrepreneurship is NOT management. It is a process of discovering opportunities in other people’s problems, building a solution and a company to deliver that solution. It requires a different mind-

set than managing an established business. This course is designed specifically to teach you to think like an entrepreneur and execute a defined process to discover, develop and profit from an opportunity. This course has changed people’s lives and it will change yours if you attend. The prestigious Kauffman Foundation, an entrepreneurial center located in Kansas City, has heralded this course. The Kauffman Vice President of Entrepreneurship, Thom Ruhe said, “The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program is changing the way entrepreneurship is being taught in classrooms and communities throughout the world.” In just two years, the program has been introduced in many colleges and universities throughout the United States and in 11 countries.

So what makes this course so special? The course introduces the trainee to a way of thinking that is different than most people. It teaches an Entrepreneurial Mindset. The course is based on key business and character traits, experienced by

Clifton Taulbert, who was born into the environment of small town, cotton farming in pre-integration Mississippi. Starting from this complete lack of advantages, Clifton is now a major owner of the Bank of Oklahoma and speaks to audiences large and small throughout the country. He attributes it to learning eight life lessons. These eight lessons are brought to you during the course by meeting, through video, 14 real world people who started with less than a few thousand dollars, some with nothing, and all now own multimillion dollar companies. After viewing the video assignments each week, you will come to class for a guided discussion and mentoring. The life lessons will be discussed with the class and with local entrepreneurs who own successful local businesses. During the course you will also discover and practice the Opportunity Discovery Process. This is a way of examining your business ideas to see if they are financially suitable for investing your time. This process alone could save you from wasting countless dollars. The classes meet at The Entrepreneur Center each Tuesday for 10 weeks beginning Feb. 18th. Seating is limited. Don’t miss out! Seats are confirmed by getting your check to The Entrepreneur Center at 19 North Main St. in Temple. You may also register at www.tec-centex.com or call 254-598-7400.

Shop Local: Unique Gift Ideas For Valentine Friends And Lovers By: Carol Mouché, Chisholm Trail Chorus, Sweet Adelines International Candy and flowers are traditional gifts for Valentine’s Day, but if you’re looking for something unique for sweethearts of all ages, here are a couple ideas some of the local Temple Chamber members are offering…

“Dance lessons are a wonderful surprise for any woman – women love to dance,” says Karen Gonzales, co-owner of In The Mood Ballroom/Dance Studio at 13 & 15 S. Main Street in downtown Temple.“Dancing is a great activity to do together, and everything about it is good for you – emotionally and physically.” Gift certificates are available for private lessons and group classes. Two great events are scheduled at the Ballroom over Valentine’s weekend – February 14 is a DJ country western dance night, and on Feb 15, the Ballroom hosts Gary Hobbs, a well-known Tejano personality. More information about gift certificates and scheduled events is available at www.inthemoodballroom.com or call 254-773-7088. (cont. on pg. 3)

(cont. from pg. 2) If you’d like to spend

Valentine’s Day in the city of romance, but don’t have the budget for a flight to France, consider purchasing a “See You in Paris” couples package at Invisions Day Spa, located at 3411 Market Loop in south Temple. This package includes two 1hour Chocolate Soufflé Swedish relaxation massages in their Private Couples Royal Room along with a Champagne Toast by candlelight, says Phyllis Dunlap, spa owner. Do you have a friend or loved one who is expecting a baby? Then you might want to purchase the “Be My Baby” treat, which includes a 1-hour prenatal massage, massaging facial, chocolates and nonalcoholic champagne. Dunlap says the “Romancing the Stone” package is especially popular in the colder months for both men and women, with a 1-hour hot stone massage followed by a 30-minute foot reflexology treatment. And of course, no Valentine’s Day is complete without chocolate – their “Chocolate Truffle” special includes chocolate and sour cherry rejuvenating masques as well as chocolate paraffin hand and feet treatment. For more information about these and other holiday specials, visit www.invisionsdayspa.com or call 254-773-2662. Gifts & Goodies is a locally owned store at Temple Mall that carries a wide array of gifts for all budgets, says Linda Goodenough, coowner.“We have ‘perpetual’ red and yellow roses, made of porcelain, which are gorgeous to give, and they last forever instead of drying up in a week. We also have

jeweled perfume bottles, which look wonderful on a woman’s dresser, as well as plush stuffed animals. And for something completely unique to Temple, we have 6-foot sock monkeys for your favorite monkey.” Other popular gifts this year are ‘chalkboard’ items – things you can write on with chalk – such as mugs, wine glasses and gift tags. Purchasers can write their own sentiment or name on them and easily erase it for the next party. For a little humor, the store also carries red boxer shorts with creative sayings such as “honey buns.” Find Gifts & Goodies on Facebook or call 254-774-6868 for more information. For that special man in your life, Dianna Sargent, independent beauty consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics, says wellpriced cologne is a great choice. In addition, two popular Mary Kay products for both men and women during the winter months are Satin Lips (an exfoliating mask for the lips, followed by a moisturizing lip balm) and Satin Hands (3 separate products to make them “nice and smooth.”) She also offers a Valentine basket with a stuffed animal and perfume, as well as gift certificates for all skin care products, cosmetics, perfume and cologne. “Christmas and Valentine’s Day are my best-selling times of the year, because people want to buy something a little different for their loved ones,” she says. Sargent provides free delivery to purchasers and gift recipients in the Temple-

To satisfy your sweetheart’s sweet tooth, “There’s nothing wrong with a Valentine kolache!” says Kirk Lammert, owner of Teddy Bear Bakery at 115 W. French Ave. in downtown Temple. The bakery is at French & Third Streets and is connected to the Czech Heritage Museum. For the uninitiated, a kolache is a rich Czech pastry with a fruit or cream cheese filling. “We can always bake a cake for that special someone, such as dark chocolate with a strawberry filling – we just need 72 hours’ notice,” he says.“Or for something a little different, consider giving a homemade cookie bouquet.” All items can be ordered and picked up at the bakery. For hours and other details, find the bakery on Facebook, website www.teddybearbakery.com or call 254-231-1926.

A Day Behind Social Services With Leadership Temple By: Sharon Sapp, Chris Peal & Erik Ray, Leadership Temple On Tuesday, January 28, 2014, the Leadership Temple 2013 – 2014 class had their Social Services Day. We visited Feed My Sheep located at 112 West Avenue G, to assist with preparation and serving lunch to those in need. Feed My Sheep daily prepares and distributes sack lunches and one hot meal to any individual who comes to the

kitchen needing something to eat. In 2013, food and monetary donations from various individuals, businesses and churches in the community provided all the necessary items to pre-

pare meals for 365 days, without the kitchen having to purchase any food items. Feed My Sheep also serves as a warming shelter from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. for men when the temperatures outside are frigid. Feed My Sheep was organized when a group of concerned citizens from Temple saw the need to feed the homeless and had strong community support. Feed My Sheep has received assistance from Churches Touching Lives Through Christ regarding a 501 c(3) status and will eventually be a stand alone ministry in the community. Visiting Feed My Sheep gave the class of Leadership Temple the opportunity to see a side of Temple that we normally would not in our daily routines. We were greeted by Ms. Ellen and given a tour of the facility. Feed My Sheep is extremely short-staffed, and our morning visit there was a great opportunity for us to see not only how difficult it is for those at Feed My

Sheep to put together and feed nearly 160 people daily, but for us to see just how many people are in need of help. Our visit to Feed My Sheep gave this 2013-14 class of Leadership Temple our first chance to come together and work as one team in a group setting. It was great to see the class taking charge of the situation and helping in all facets of the Feed My Sheep daily meal. Once all the duties of feeding those in need were completed, we assisted with cleaning the food preparation areas. Our next stop was the Chamber where we participated in a working lunch, while Ann Thompson from the United Way spoke to us regarding the services that the United Way provides to the community and also the various community agencies who receive United Way funding. Thirteen different social service community partners participated in the afternoon event by giving a brief overview of the services their agency provides. The Leadership team was divided into five different groups with a possible case scenario. Each group was to determine which of the social service agencies could assist with the

needs presented in each scenario, by visiting with the agency representatives. The scenarios provided us with a good understanding of the services available regarding various needs in the community such as housing, child care, job training and job assistance, utility assistance and educational. The Temple/Belton social service agencies work very closely with one another when it comes to sharing resources and assisting the needy in this community. Networking is a vital component to each of us as we collaborate together to meet those needs. Temple Leadership enjoyed our Social Services Day as we were able to meet many of the agencies that make a difference in so many lives. Temple is truly a great place to live and work!

The Extra Mile By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas

Almost everyone says they go the Extra Mile. Many even believe they do. Some, who actually go there, find it is like the Sahara Desert. Almost no one else is there. Others don’t really go the extra mile. They think, why am I doing this, no one else is, this is nuts! So, they stop going the extra mile. For those who keep going, the rewards are great! Show up early, stay late, do extra work, engage more people, help a coworker, help your boss, go the extra mile with a customer. Be attentive rather than just taking up space. Offer to help. Offer to train employees. Let your initiative shine. Don’t wait for an invitation, just do stuff that moves the company or is just the right thing to do. Lead from the front! Do the dirty little jobs and show other employees how to do things. There is a corollary to Murphy’s Law that goes, “In order to get any-

thing done, you have to do something else first.” Instead of complaining about those things, decide that you like to do what the people who pay you want you to do and do those little pop up tasks that come along. It often takes less time than bringing them to someone else’s attention for resolution or a decision. Like the Nike line, “Just Do It!” As a decision maker, you need to find ways to go the extra mile with your customers. Often customers will tell you exactly how you can

go the extra mile, if you are listening. I had a friend who planned and executed events for adults. He had a niche, was focused and was doing fairly well. One of his clients asked him to do a birthday party for her pre-teen daughter. He said, “No.” because it wasn’t in his view of what his company was all about. He was asked a similar question soon after and still he said, “No.” He was probably asked about 6 times over the course of a few months from his existing customers for this new service. Finally the light bulb came on. Today, he has a thriving pre-teen girl’s birthday party company, in addition to his other com-

Anything a customer will pay you a profitable price to do, as long as it isn't illegal or unethical, you should
