Leadership Temple Class of 2013 along with President Christine Parks, Kennedy-Powell Elementary, and Curriculum Co-chairs Jackie Basile, BBVA Compass & Meghan McCaffrey Collins, Megg’s Café & Hamilton Bread Co.

The most recent graduates from the program developed a SNACK PACK program to provide area children in need non-perishable food items that can be taken home each weekend. This program will bring direct benefits to approximately 70 students from lowincome households each week. These students might not otherwise have a meal after leaving school on Friday. School counselors will identify children in need and work with Churches Touching Lives for Christ to distribute SNACK PACKS to the children each week. In addition to their efforts to raise funds and awareness for this cause, the class participated in monthly “class” days in which they were able to gain behind the scenes experience for areas important to our community like local government, education and economic development.

“Leadership Temple has been a great experience for me. It has given me new appreciation for what it takes for a successful city to operate and continue to excel on so many levels from daily operations to civil service to promoting and sustaining a healthy business environment,” said Tyler Johnson, BBVA Compass, of his experience in the

Learn, Discover & Have Fun at Your Local Museum By: Susan Howe, Friends of the Temple Public Library

Central Texans are lucky to have three outstanding museums which preserve our rich history: Bell County Museum, Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum. Plan a summer “staycation” to visit these museums and learn more about our heritage and history. This summer, all of the museums have special exhibits and activities planned for children as well as adults. Established in 1991, the Bell County Museum in Belton is a vital resource for the collection, interpretation and preservation of the historical heritage of Bell County. Located at 201 N. Main Street in downtown Belton, the museum has nine ongoing exhibits as well as special exhibitions throughout the year. This summer’s special exhibit is “Our Favorite Things: Staff Selections from the Collection” which will be open July 2 – Aug. 3. Museum staff members will select some of their favorite objects and write labels on why the piece was chosen. Visitors will have an opportunity to be the curator and write labels for the exhibit.

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is dedicated to fostering educational, cultural, and genealogical opportunities, specifically as it pertains to people of Czech Heritage. It provides genealogical material, sponsors educational programs, and collects, preserves, and exhibits artifacts related to Czech history. The current exhibit “Czech Muzika: Texas Style” includes stories and photos of Czech bands, musical instruments, and phonographs. Winners of Phonebook Recycling Contest Announced By: Tanya Gray, Keep Temple Beautiful Keep Temple Beautiful (KTB) is proud to announce the results of the 2013 Project Redirectory telephone phonebook recycling campaign. As part of KTB and Yellow Pages' (YP) Project ReDirectory recycling program, 8 schools competed to collect the most phone books over a 1 month period. The recycling of outdated phone books brought in cash for several Temple schools and prizes for many students.

Cater Elementary collected the most directories to capture top honors in the 20th annual Project ReDirectory recycling campaign with a total of 4942 phonebooks. Scott Elementary came in second place collecting 2198 and Jefferson Elementary School finished third with 572. Winning schools are determined by the maximum phonebooks collected per student enrolled. Each school was recognized in ceremonies that honored their achievements. Unlike in years past, this year middle school, high school and private school students were able to participate. Due to our new partners at Yellow Pages we were able to award individual prizes to this particular group of students. Grades 6-12th who collected

10 or more phone books were entered into a drawing to win headphones. Any student who collected 100 or more phone books received a "KTB Green Tote" and cool prizes from YP. James Equels the top winning student from Bonham Middle School won a "Skull Candy " headphone. Special recognition goes to elementary student Vivianna Hale from Scott Elementary who collected 736 phonebooks and Cater Elementary students who collect a record breaking number of phonebooks each year!

Keep Temple Beautiful thanks Yellow Pages for partnering with us to provide a valuable opportunity to protect the environment. Through Project ReDirectory we are showing students and their families how to make a life-long positive impact. These eight schools diverted 9,405 phone books which equates to over 31,000 pounds from Temple's landfill. Congratulations to all who participated in the 2013 recycling campaign!

Project ReDirectory is a combined effort of KTB, Yellow Pages and the City of Temple Solid Waste Division through our "Put It Here" initiative. For more information regarding Keep Temple Beautiful, contact us at (254) 493-4000 or "Like Us" on Facebook.

The Entrepreneur Corner Building Your Mastermind Group By: Vane Hugo, The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas

The Entrepreneur Center of Central Texas, located at 19 North Main St., Temple, TX 76501 Photo by Skeebo

to me over two hundred times. I believe that over half my net worth today can be attributed to things I learned and am still learning from the collective experience and expertise of these financial gurus. The same is true in business endeavors, those who will admit they don’t know it all, can find someone who does. Yet, your mentor doesn’t have to be just one person. If one mentor is valuable, multiple mentors are invaluable. Build a mentor group. Napoleon Hill, in his seminal book, Think and Grow Rich, wrote about the importance of a mastermind group. This was not a new idea. Ben Franklin went from being a printer’s apprentice, to owning a publishing company. He was one of America’s most influential founding fathers and the richest man in America. He didn’t do it alone. Ben found inspiration, guidance and nurturing from his mastermind group. Though each mentor can provide significant value, you can benefit more by coupling thoughts from several experts.

Been There! Done That!

When we hear those words, usually something has turned out badly. Wouldn’t it have been better if we could have known their story beforehand, so we could have avoided the poor results? Recall from the literature course, you had to take in school, the English poet John Donne wrote,“No man is an island.” Another great philosopher,Yogi Berra, said, "You can observe a lot by just watching." These sayings point to one overriding truth …

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Get a mentor! When I was younger I managed my investments in the traditional way, let somebody else do it. I did OK, though by the time I helped my kids through college, I was less than broke. Finally I saw the light and began working with a group of wealth building experts. First, through their newsletters. Their writings opened up the thought process behind specific investment opportunities, so I could learn from their expertise, rather than just take “tips”. My results improved dramatically. I soon arranged to meet the people behind the publications and get their experiences directly. The money I spent on this mentoring opportunity was returned

So, how do you build your mastermind group? Go to events that attract people who can help you in your business building.

“...those who will admit they don’t know it all, can find someone who does.

Identify potential mentors. Before you approach someone to invest their time in you, know where you want to go. Without high level goals and a roadmap, you’ll be wasting the mentor’s time and he

won’t work with you very long. To maximize your relationship with each mentor, define what you must learn that this person can best teach? Track your progress. Are you reaching your goals and learning what you need? Making progress is your responsibility not the mentor’s. Your mentor is your coach, not a player! You make the decisions, based on the mentor’s advice and what you’ve learned. Mentors hold the lantern so that others can see the path.

To have a lasting relationship with your mentor, provide reasons for him to continue. Usually, mentors value knowing they’ve helped more than an intrinsic reward. Show him you value his counsel. Tell him, specifically, what you learned. Thank him each time you meet. When you begin to achieve monetary results from mentoring, it is time to offer monetary compensation. When you bring it up, have an idea of how much continued support is worth. Don’t pay more. If the mentor believes that’s not sufficient, then you need to graciously end it. Here are some actionable steps for you: • Use Chamber networking functions to meet local business people • Be a guest at a Rotary, Kiwanis or Lions club meeting, to meet successful, influential people • Learn to think like an entrepreneur – take the Entrepreneurial Mindset Course www.templecollegefoundation.org, click events, scroll to The Entrepreneurial Mindset, register.
