Established by The Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness, this program encourages Temple residents to stay healthy with fun events that promote regular exercise and balanced nutrition. Besides increasing awareness on how to achieve a healthy lifestyle, Get Fit Temple also cooperates with local businesses and employers to sponsor events. The Temple Police Department and the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System are a few of the local businesses hosting events during the summer. In recognition of the Texas travel industry and its important contribution to the economy of Texas, Gov. Rick Perry has proclaimed May 5-13 Texas Tourism Week. He is urging Texas cities to promote tourism awareness in their respective communities. Temple will join in this celebration with a variety of activities designed to promote the wonderful treasures of this community. • The Seventh Annual Discover the Visitor Center Open House will be held on Friday, May 11. All Temple visitors and residents will be invited to the Visitor Center for refreshments throughout the day. • Specials and discounts for area attractions will be offered through the Temple CVB Facebook page. • The Totally Temple Photo Challenge will be held all week. This contest invites Temple residents and visitors to capture the unique sites that make Temple special. The Leadership Temple Class of 2012 had Public Safety Day on April 10th. The day began at the new Fire Station 8/Training Center with an overview of Temple Fire and Rescue’s services and operations. City of Temple Parks Foundation and Parks and Leisure Services Department are gearing up for another fun filled, family summer. The Parks Foundation will once again offer their Movies in the Park series at local parks. This free series takes place in various city’s parks and offers a great opportunity for community members to escape the summer heat with an outdoor, evening screening of family friendly movies. The event is completely free and open to the public. The 2012 summer movie lineup includes recent releases Puss in Boots, The Muppets and The Adventures of Tin Tin. Each showing takes place in a different park and showcases the great facilities our parks department has to offer. Bring your lawn chair and picnic and enjoy the show. Hot Summer Sounds is another great way to escape the summer doldrums. This free concert series, sponsored by Scott and White Health Plan, has
entertained Temple citizens for over a decade and always proves to be a fun event. The concerts kick off Friday, June 8th and run each week from 7:30 to 9:30 at Miller Park. Some of this summer’s artists include Pride and Joy, Hedley Grange, Mike and the Moonpies and Grupo Zistema to name a few. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the atmosphere as you listen to some great live music under the starry Texas sky. The Leadership Temple 2011-2012 Class has entered the city of Temple in a contest to win $100,000 to go towards building a dog park! Now it is up to the community of Temple to cast your vote. Create an account: This involves you entering your email address and creating a simple password. 3. Click “Vote Now!” twice every day. You can vote once on the website above and once on their facebook page, PetSafe. Follow these three easy steps through June 14th and you have just gotten yourself one step closer to getting you and your canine friend a fabulous dog park. The Leadership Temple Dog Park, in partnership with the City of Temple,
Temple Parks & Leisure, and Temple Parks Foundation, they are trying to create a fenced-in, off-leash dog park where well behaved canine citizens can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering people, property or wildlife. Located in the Lion’s Park ecreational area, there will be two separate locations for the park areas to accommodate large and small dogs. Planned amenities include shade and water for dogs and owners, covered waste receptacles, parking and benches and tables. If you would like to give more than just your votes on the PetSafe website, you can also give monetary dona-
tions. The Leadership Temple class is in dire need of funding for this incredible project. They need your help to make this come to fruition. All levels of sponsorships are available. For $50,000 you would get the naming rights to the Temple Dog Park. $3,000 will get you a stone bench in your name. For $2,000 a canine silhouette will be made in your name and placed along the fence line. For $1,000, a tree will be planted in honor or memory of your choosing; and for $250 you will receive an engraved brick that will be placed on the paved walkway. Program Encourages Residents to Identify Outstanding Trees in Temple By: Kristi Sykora, City of Temple Parks and Leisure
The Legacy Tree program is designed to identify and promote outstanding trees in Temple. Trees are very beneficial to the community. They remove pollutants from the air, they help reduce run off after rain storms, when planted or growing in the right spots they can reduce electric consumption by helping to keep your home or office cooler during the summer months, and they beautify our city. A Legacy Tree is defined as a tree or stand of trees that due to its age, size, species, quality or historic association is of landmark importance and its retention as such will not unreasonably interfere with the use of the property on which it is located. “The Legacy Tree program was started three years ago by the City’s Tree Advisory Board as a way to recognize outstanding trees in Temple. The history of the importance of trees to Temple goes back to when W. Goodrich Jones convinced the state of Texas to begin its annual Arbor Day recognition,” said Val Roming, Parks and Leisure Services Arborist. “There are several categories that a person
can choose to nominate his or her tree – or another person’s tree.” Legacy Tree applications must fit into one of five categories: Heritage Tree, Landmark Tree, Parkway Resource Trees, Champion Tree, or Preservation Grove. Heritage Tree – Trees that are 50 years or older or have a connection to some historic event, building, district, or were planted by a historically significant individual. Landmark Tree – Trees that are unusual or have a very high aesthetic quality. They can be unusual due to: large size for that species, special and intact aesthetic form, unusual shape not normally seen in most trees, very interesting flower and/or branching patterns, or a species of tree that rarely occurs in Temple. Parkway Resource Tree – Planted groups of trees in public rights-ofway, public parking lots or trail with a consistent design theme. Champion Tree – This category will identify and recognize the largest living tree of its species located within the city limits of Temple. The trees
will be measured for height, circumference of the trunk, and the average width of the crown spread. Preservation Grove – naturally occurring trees in a grove consisting of at least six trees grouped in close proximity (within a ¼ acre area) with trunks closer together than 100 feet that are of the same species or are very similar in form. The trees shall be native or naturalized or endemic and surviving without intervention or supplemental watering. “We only have six Champion Trees identified – Live Oak, Pecan, Bald Cypress, American Elm, Mulberry, and Magnolia. That means there are a lot of species of trees not represented such as Red Oak, Sycamore, Bur Oak, Sweetgum, Red Bud, Chinquapin Oak, Chinaberry, Soapberry, Cedar Elm, and even Hackberry – so the door is wide open for nominations,” said Roming. reviewed by the City of Temple Tree Advisory Board. “I think there is a misconception that there are not any noteworthy trees located in Temple and that is far from the truth. Just driving around and knowing where to look, I have seen many trees that fit our Legacy Tree categories. By nominating trees it allows us to make these trees known to our citizens and bring a bit of recognition to the owners of these trees,” said Roming.
