With over 3,000 military children’s wishes to fulfill, Santa’s elves are hard at work in Fort Hood’s Santa’s Workshop this holiday season. Temple Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee is working to make this program a success through our local Toy Drive. The toy drive benefits the workshop by donating gifts to Fort Hood so that children of military members, who have financial need regardless of their income level, can have gifts to help celebrate the holiday. Primary consideration is given to active duty military stationed at Ft. Hood. At Santa’s Workshop, parents can browse the well-stocked shelves and select gifts for their children from a large selection of donated new toys, games and books. Last year, over 3,400 children were able to enjoy a happier holiday through this program and the generosity of donors. The Chamber collects new unwrapped toys, games and books throughout the holiday. If you drive by 5th street on Central, you can see a large POD sitting in the back of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. If you asked any of the ladies there, they would be more

than willing to accept toy donations to fill it. But PODS offered more than a place to store the toys. They also donated a $500 check that the Chamber can use to buy more gifts to go to Santa’s Workshop at Fort Hood. Celebrate Texas Recycles Day All Month! By: Tanya Gray, Keep Temple Beautiful

Texas Recycles Day (TRD) is fast approaching. It is held on November 15 of each year. This is the only recognized day dedicated to recycling. Texans should be very proud to know that TRD served as the model for the National America Recycles Day. What was once a statewide campaign that aimed to educate Texans on the environmental and economic benefits of waste reduction and recycling is now nationally recognized. This year, in an effort of celebrating this beneficial day, Keep Temple Beautiful (KTB) is offering several ways for the public to get involved. In honor of Texas Recycles Day, schools, colleges and businesses in the

area can be a part of “Operation Clean Sweep” by maintaining the image of their properties/campuses or by showcasing an environmental effort throughout the month of November. Tell us what you’re doing and document it by sending pictures to Keep Temple Beautiful at ktb@templetx.org. Participants will be showcased on our facebook site at www.facebook.com/keeptemplebeautiful. On Friday, November 16, starting at 9am-12 noon at the recycling center, Keep Temple Beautiful and the City’s Solid Waste Department will celebrate Texas Recycles Day (TRD) by providing reusable grocery totes to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to pick-up a reusable grocery bag con-

taining a variety of educational materials on recycling including information on water recycling, lawn care and material on the benefits of not using plastic bags. The recycling center is located at 602 Jack Baskin Drive. KTB is requesting volunteers to join us on Saturday, November 17th to participate in planting 63 native trees on Blackland Road from 9am11pm. We will kick-off the event with a small ceremony at 720 East Blackland Road. This is a family friendly event so everyone is invited! Last but not least, in an effort to encourage the reuse of items in our everyday lives, Keep Temple Beautiful is sponsoring a holiday EcoLunch & Learn. On Wednesday, November 28th we have invited Marilyn Garber with Silo Christmas Tree Farms to show us how to make

t i n t g u C E v n o e n b b ts i R

recycled Christmas ornaments and wreaths from boughs. Mrs. Garber will also discuss the benefits of having a live Christmas tree and how to take care of it. This event will be held at the Temple Chamber of Commerce from 12pm-1pm. Please RSVP to tanya@keeptemplebeautiful.org or call Keep Temple Beautiful. KTB is asking everyone to make an effort to recycle especially during Texas Recycles Day. More importantly, together let’s educate others on the importance of recycling and encourage them to make it a part of their everyday lives. This citywide recycling campaign aims to educate on the environmental and economic benefits of recycling. For more information concerning these projects and more, please contact Keep Temple Beautiful at (254) 493-4000.

Bell County Government offers Community Cohesive Leadership By: Elaine Ewing, David Wesson, Susan Hagen & Jeremy Shroeder, Leadership Temple

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, the Leadership Temple Class of 2012-2013 set out to experience many aspects of county government

They first received education from the County Judge, Jon Burrows. He informed the class that Bell County is the 17th largest in the state of Texas. Bell County has experienced 50% growth in the past 20 years. Leadership Temple then heard from the county commissioners. In their words they are “Where the rubber meets the road”. Leadership Temple then set out on foot accompanied by Stephanie Turnham, director of the Bell County Museum. The group was immediately drawn to the “Up the Chisholm Trail sculpture, which consists on 17 bronze panels, three longhorn, barbed wire, and a Texas star that represent various aspects of the history of the trail. The next destination was the 911 call center. Dalton Cross informed the group that the center receives anywhere from 400-900 calls per day. The afternoon offered additional education at the Bell County

Justice Center. A wealth of information was provided by the Bell County Sheriff and the District Attorney. In the fiscal year 2011, the Patrol Division answered 39,164 calls; filed 10,083 reports, and made 280 arrests. The Leadership Temple group wrapped up their day with a tour of the Bell County Jail. The final portion of the tour took place in the watch tower room, which has monitors for every area of the facility, including large windows that look down on inmates. Collectively, Bell County leaders provide all of the services to make ordinary life successful. We are fortunate to have a county government where each department is pushing the same wagon down the same road.

The Temple Dog Park is very close to becoming a reality! By: Kristi Sykora, Temple Parks and Leisurev

In December 2011, the Leadership Temple Class of 2012 began designing plans and raising funds to build a dog park for the Temple community. The class chose to build a dog park for their class project as a means of giving back to the community and improving the city’s overall quality of life. A dog park will provide a central location, safe for canine friends and their owners, to come together and enjoy the outdoors. It will provide great off-leash exercise opportunities for our canine companions and possible opportunities for public canine events. “It is something the community has been missing and we wanted to assist Temple with a dog park for the citizens to enjoy,” said Stan Giles, LT

Class member. After much research, planning and fundraising, the class is very close to construction. “There has been a tremendous amount of support and encouragement from Temple residents and we would not have reached this point if it was not for the generosity of our donors and corporate sponsors. This project is solely reliant upon donations” said Jackie Basile, LT class member.

sion, as need and funds arise. There will be designated small and large dog fenced in area, gated for safety and security. The trees within Lions Park will provide great shade and new trees are available to be sponsored and planted by anyone interested. The entry way to the park will serve as a beautiful gateway, complete with an engraved brick area for anyone interested in sponsoring a brick.

The dog park has a 5 acre tract of land, designated by the Temple Parks & Leisure Services, located within Lions Park. The dog park will begin as a 1.5 acre park, with room for expan-

Every penny counts and donations are still being accepted; everyone is welcome to donate or become a sponsor. It will be your donation that will take us to the next level and allow us to begin construction! Legislative Luncheons, from Congress to the Classroom

TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM / 7

By: Katie Smith, Temple Chamber of Commerce It was a packed house for Congressman John R. Carter’s State of the Nation Legislative Luncheon. The Hilton Garden Inn hosted the event on October 11th, and is part of a series of luncheons organized by the Legislative Affairs Committee under the Temple Chamber of Commerce. Rep. Carter warned of tough times during Congress’ next session, but expressed full confidence in getting through looming spending cuts or higher taxes. He even made it evident

through the title of his speech, “What

Rep. John R. Carter answering questions with Dan Posey after his speech during the State of the Nation Legislative Luncheon

makes America and Americans great!”. Carter is in his 5th term on the Appropiations Committee, and goes into Congress’ next session on November 13th. The next Legislative Luncheon covers the State of Temple ISD, and will be held at Wildflower Country Club on Tuesday,

Nov. 6th at 11:30am. Dr. Robin Battershell, Superintendent of Schools for Temple ISD, is the guest speaker. Tickets are $25 each and table sponsorships are still available. For more information or to register, please visit the events tab at www.TempleTx.org, or call (254) 773-2105.

Paul Salos, Sinatra & the Temple Jazz Orchestra America’s Got Talent finalist Paul Salos will appear with The Temple Jazz Orchestra (TJO) in a program featuring the music of Frank Sinatra at Temple College on Saturday, November 10 at 7:30 pm in the auditorium of the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center. The concert is sponsored by Scott & White Healthcare and KCEN-TV. Tickets for the performance are $25 for adults, $10 for students and are available for advance purchase at the Temple College Division of Fine Arts office, Johnnie’s Cleaners, HEB and the Band Room stores in Belton and Harker Heights. Tickets also may be purchased online at http://templesymphony.frontgatetickets.com. The show will unite one of the hottest big bands in Texas with one of the top singers of the music of Frank

Sinatra. Back from its second successful tour of Europe last summer, TJO will bring many of Nelson Riddle’s original arrangements to life. Music to be performed in this concert includes New York New York, Fly me to the moon, I’ve got you under my skin, Night and Day, Come fly with me, Summer wind, For once in my life, The Way you look tonight, My way, The Lady is a tramp, It was a very Good Year, Luck be a lady, That’s life, and All or nothing at all. “I fell in love with Frank Sinatra’s singing as a teenager,” says TJO director Tom Fairlie. “As I’ve gotten older I’ve gravitated more and more to his music. I’ve wanted to do a Sinatra concert in Temple for many years and this concert is the fruition of that idea.” Paul Salos has been said to be “the best Sinatra singer in the business” by Las Vegas music critic Steve Honneycutt.

“He is the most complete copy from the voice to the uncanny mannerisms this reporter has ever seen.” Salos amazing ability to reproduce a Sinatra show brought him all the way to the finals on “America’s Got Talent.” He has since performed his show to audiences throughout the world including Paris, the French Riviera, Spain’s Costa Del Sol, Greece and the world’s most exclusive resort, Dubai, UAE. He also has performed at the palatial Crown Jewels of Las Vegas, Caesar’s Palace, the Palazzo, the Bellagio, MGM Grand and the very exclusive Society Venues in New York. By: Erin Spencer, Temple College

More than 58 vendors participated in the 2012 Temple Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase, sponsored by Scott & White Healthcare, BBVA Compass and KCEN-TV. “The event was a great opportunity for our sponsors and vendors,” said Dan Jones, chair of the Temple Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and owner of Kwik Kopy Business Center. “All the vendors seemed to be pleased with the opportunity to network and promote their goods and services.” The Showcase kicked off on Thursday, Oct. 25, with attendees being greeted

by music performed by the Temple High School Jazz Orchestra and food from McAlister’s Deli, Jason’s Deli, Fuddruckers, the Mayborn Convention Center, Classic Catering and Schlotzsky’s. On Friday, Oct. 26, the Business Showcase opened at 10 a.m. and offered two chances to hear a seminar presented by Skip Carruth entitled “Technology is Awesome: Are We Willing to Pay the Price?,” which covered the advantages, as well as the pitfalls, of technology and social media. In addition to the seminar, attendees were treated to gifts and goodies as many vendors had samples for all to try. “The Business Showcase was a great experience for Expo Catering and Concessions. It allowed us to highlight part of our business that the public and fellow chamber members were not aware of,” said Ashley Bland,
