STRIVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Temple Members Care

In our Strive to Make a Difference feature we will highlight member involvement in causes near and dear to their hearts. If you have a connection to a charity and would like to share it with us, please email Hub@tebh.org. As my four children left the house, I found myself looking for a way to both fill my time, but more importantly to fill my soul. The answer for me was volunteer work. As far back as I can remember my parents were involved with the community, so I always felt it was the right thing to do. I like hands-on work, so I volunteered for Jewish Family Service, working weekly with Holocaust survivors, visiting seniors, and helping with all their needs. It was perfect for me; a “no-frills, roll up your sleeves and get the work done” organization that serves over 100,000 of the most vulnerable people in Los Angeles, whether they are Jewish or not.

Additionally, for the last twenty plus years, I have been on the board of a camp for underprivileged children, Camp Harmony, and for over ten years, on the board of trustees of Pitzer College. And I'm thrilled that my son Josh is on the JFS board with me, and my son Jordan is on the Camp Harmony board. My sons Danny and David are actively involved in other charities. I have truly found a way to nurture my soul, and would welcome anyone interested in helping in any way, no matter how small. You can find us at: www.jfsla.org. Shana Passman and her husband, Don, have been proud members of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills for 35 years.

We have two food banks (SOVA,) two family violence shelters, many senior programs, programs for developmentally disabled, new mothers, and much more. For the past year and a half, I’m honored to be serving as Chairman of the organization. Temple Topics

Temple Topics

Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills strives to connect with the larger Jewish community and engage with the broader world. Tikkun Olam is a centerpiece of what we do at Temple Emanuel and a pillar value held by our congregation. Here are some of the ways we as a temple help make a difference in the community. ∙∙ Our Na’aseh V’Nishmah social justice group works towards raising awareness and funds for global humanitarian projects in critical areas, supporting refugee families, alleviating poverty, improving healthcare, and much more. To learn about our partnership organizations – ONE LA-IAF, Imagine LA, Tiyya, Jewish World Watch, and The MAJOR Fund, visit tebh.org/SocialJustice. ∙∙ On #GivingTuesday, when many organizations ask to donate directly to them, we use the day as an opportunity to bolster our support for our partnership organizations listed above. ∙∙ During the High Holy Days this year, our congregation donated 5,000 pounds of non-perishable foods to SOVA’s food pantry, and collected 50,000 diapers for Tiyya, dubbed by the organization as “the largest donation ever received.” ∙∙ Temple congregants started a Team Emanuel 5K group that supports local Jewish organizations through their 5K Fun Runs. In December we helped support the Westside JCC, and in March we are lacing up for the Matzo Ball Run in support of Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. ∙∙ During Purim, our Mishloach Manot program each year supports a community partner like last year’s MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. This year we are working with Beit T’Shuvah’s new initiative Baked T’Shuvah, where with Temple Emanuel’s support will be providing sandwiches for the homeless, made out of their delicious freshly baked challah. Additionally during Purim, our Religious School students at Temple Emanuel surprise our neighbors at the Beverly Hills Carmel Assisted Living Community with Mishloach Manot gifts. As we celebrate Temple Emanuel’s 80th year, let us continue our proud tradition of Tikkun Olam with the Los Angeles community and regions around the world.

Religious School

Students in our PASSPORT program are invited to learn the ins and outs of being a community leader with a Jewish lens. Each year, teens select an issue that engages their intellect and passion. They learn from experts in the field, lobby policy makers, and engage in non-profit advocacy and philanthropy. This year's topic is gun violence. In mid-January we are sending 15 students to Washington, D.C. to meet and learn with over two thousand teens from across the country, through the Religious Action Center's L'Taken Social Justice seminar. We're excited for our PASSPORT students to put social justice into action.

Union for Reform Judaism Biennial Recap Last month, from December 6–10, six thousand Reform Jews (including eleven from TEBH) convened in Boston for the URJ Biennial. It was a moving and inspirational time, featuring dynamic speakers, new music and technology, and innovative prayer experiences. Throughout the week, there were over 100 learning sessions with meaningful discussions on topics such as the future of Reform Judaism, the relationship between Israel and American Jews, philanthropy in the Jewish community, and sharing best practices. Highlights from the plenary sessions included Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II, and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Each of them offered inspiring words for us to go back to our congregations and make a difference in the world. We were so proud of our clergy, Rabbi Sarah Bassin and Rabbi Laura Geller, who led dynamic sessions around teen social justice, Reform Judaism’s future, Jewish/Muslim relations, and engaging Baby Boomers. Additionally, we are very proud of Cantor Lizzie Weiss, who performed on the Biennial stage as both singer and actress. What became so clear from all of the sessions, plenaries, and services we attended was that Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, as a synagogue and community, represents the best of Reform Judaism. We can be proud of our synagogue and the work that we are doing to ensure that Judaism remains relevant in the 21st century. Temple Topics
