Our New Home on the Web...
We love keeping things fresh and exciting at Temple Emanuel and are delighted with the launch of our new website! Please visit the new site at tebh.org and explore the new look and some fantastic new functions. Here are three features that we think you’ll really enjoy: In the header section, this icon will take you to a new blog filled with insightful messages, articles, and updates—including messages from the clergy and posts from our B’nai Mitzvah. If you look toward the right of your screen, you’ll see a handy purple calendar widget. Click on that and out pops a quick and easy way to discover upcoming events.
As you scroll down our homepage you will see a purple shaded carousel of our Shabbat services. If you are curious as to what’s happening on a Friday night or Saturday morning, check out this section.
We are always working towards keeping the look of our temple communications modern and engaging, respecting time-honored traditions while looking toward the future. We hope you enjoy the new website.

Generating the Jewish Community of Tomorrow, Today with Rabbi Adam Lutz
Two decades ago, McTighe and Wiggins introduced the world of education to the term “backward design”. The revolutionary idea was to start educational planning, not from the activity, but with the desired outcomes. In other words, rather than beginning with the question, “What activities should students participate in today?” educators should first ask, “After my students have moved through the lesson, what outcomes do I want from their learning? And how will the students display their learning through authentic assessment?” And authentic assessment is no easy task. Authentic assessment is real world application to learning. So, then for Jewish education, we need to ask ourselves the following question: “What outcomes do we want from our students’ learning so that it can be authentically assessed as part of a real world Jewish experience?” As it turns out, no one yet knows what a twenty-first century Jewish experience looks like. But, what we do know is that an adult who has a meaningful relationship with their Jewish identity knows how to integrate their Judaism into the rest of their lived adult experience. These are lawyers and doctors who use Jewish morality to frame their practices, adults who fight for social justice as part time jobs, actors and musicians who find meaning within music and story, and engineers and physicists who not only explore the far reaches of the universe, but also love to dive deep into theology and philosophy. We can generate this twenty-first century Jewish community by teaching students how to explore their Judaism authentically in our classrooms today. By guiding students in an exploration of real-world experience with a Jewish framework, students can actually experience the practice and challenge of integrating their Judaism into the rest of their life. Sure, Jewish content, like prayers, bible stories, and the four questions are important, they are integral to participating in the Jewish community, but the authentic assessment of students' Jewish education is how well they can integrate their Judaism into their real life experience. This coming year, TEBH’s educational program will focus on the practice of integrating Judaism into the real world, because at the end of the day we want Jewish adults who know how to integrate Judaism meaningfully into their lives. 4

Our Social Justice Partner Helping Syrian Refugees
Since last year’s High Holy Days diaper drive for resettling refugee families, Temple Emanuel has built a strong partnership with Tiyya, the organization serving these families. We helped Tiyya expand the services they provide from Orange County to right here in our own backyard. By handing over an empty office, we have helped Tiyya identify dozens of families in need of support nearby. Our congregants are getting trained to help these families with everything from strengthening their English skills, to opening checking accounts, moving, and babysitting. This kind of hands-on action not only makes a direct difference in the lives of these families, but it also keeps us connected to the story of immigration that so many of us have in the not-too-distant past in our own families—or maybe even have ourselves. In May, our partners at Tiyya were recognized by Mayor Garcetti for the extraordinary work they do. When executive director Meymuna Hussein-Cattan gave her acceptance speech, she proudly described their partnership with Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. The two hundred people in attendance erupted in applause. People are looking for religious communities to take on the mantle of moral leadership and to act. The amazing leaders of our synagogue’s justice group, Na’aseh V’nishmah, have done just that. We take our group’s name from the response the Israelites gave when we first received Torah: “Na’aseh V’nishmah”—“We will do and we will listen.” Our philosophy is action first. And that has set this community apart in a way in which we can all take pride. –Rabbi Sarah Bassin Temple Topics
