STRIVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Temple Members Care
In our Strive to Make a Difference feature we will highlight member involvement in causes near and dear to their hearts. If you have a connection to a charity and would like to share it with us, please email Hub@tebh.org. We feel deeply connected to the values of Temple Emanuel for many reasons. Inspired by the words of Micah which are inscribed outside of our sanctuary, “Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your G-d”, our family is committed to and deeply proud of our synagogue’s core principle of Tikkun Olam. While there are many organizations deserving of our time and support, we are particularly drawn to the mission of The Maple Counseling Center (TMCC). Offering low-cost, high-quality comprehensive mental health counseling to all individuals regardless of their ability to pay, TMCC also provides excellent training and supervision for interns and counselors who are working toward their licenses in mental health professions.
local schools includes professional help, peer counseling and weekly “community circle” group sessions for elementary students which offer a safe space to discuss concerns, encourage respectful problem solving and prevent bullying. Mental health issues are a serious, pervasive problem which affect every demographic. They jeopardize the lives and wellbeing of the impacted individual, as well as family and loved ones. Mental illness may be difficult to acknowledge. It can be expensive to address. It may be accompanied by a stigma that makes seeking help even more challenging. The Maple Counseling Center is there to support those in need. Learn more at tmcc.org.
TMCC was formed in the early 1970’s by a visionary group of community members, including our beloved late mother/mother-in-law Sooky Goldman, in order to bring awareness and resources to a community that was just beginning to acknowledge the growing drug problem among its own children. Since that time, the scope and reach of the Center’s services have grown tremendously, drawing clients from all parts of Los Angeles County and providing counseling for individuals, couples, families, groups, seniors and children. Programming offered at
Myra Lurie and her family, have been proud members of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills for over 12 years. Temple Topics

Religious School This past January, 16 teens from our Religious School joined Rabbi Lutz and Rabbi Bassin on a trip to Washington D.C. for the L’Taken teen seminar with the Relgious Action Center for Reform Judaism. After spending the school year learning about their chosen issue of gun violence prevention, these students lobbied Senators Feinstein and Harris, Representatives Bass, Lieu, and Gomez to close existing loopholes in background checks. In direct response to their lobbying, Representative Bass became a cosponsor to the bill—showing our students the power of speaking up. As the spotlight on gun violence prevention is increasing in the wake of the school shooting in Florida, we are seeing students provide extraordinary moral leadership. We are proud of our Temple Emanuel students for doing the same. Summer Quinn, a four-time participant in the L’Taken, wrote a reflection as a call to all of us to follow the lead of our students. May we as a society heed their call. To read Summer’s reflection visit tebh.org/LTaken.

ChaiVillageLA: A Very Unique Village What’s A Village? Heard about the Village Movement? 15 years ago, Boston neighbors sought a way to help each other stay in their homes as they grew older. Little did they know they were starting a movement when they formed the first village—where neighbors help neighbors, strengthening social connections. Today there are over 200 villages across the country, providing adults with a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. Why Is Our Village Different From All Other Villages? In 2015 congregants from Temple Emanuel and Temple Isaiah joined together to create ChaiVillageLA, the first ever synagogue-based village.
Joyous celebrants at 2017 ChaiVillageLA Seder. All Temple Emanuel members are welcome to attend this year’s Seder on April 5.
What are our happy 215 villagers doing? Many are attending memberled programs like museum trips, walks with a rabbi, and film discussions. Many have been trained to help other members, providing rides to doctor appointments, bringing meals for homebound members or chicken soup for the sick, assisting with household repairs, and providing computer help.
When ChaiVillageLA started, our mission was to help older adults to “age in place.” But it’s turned into much more. According to one member, “I can’t say enough about the role that ChaiVillageLA is playing in my life and my husband’s as we happily age in this embracing community.” ChaiVillageLA is open to all temple members. For information, visit us at ChaiVillageLA.org or contact Devorah Servi at (310) 592-0321 or Devorah@ChaiVillageLA.org. Temple Topics
