In June of 2016, I began the pursuit of a lifelong dream of mine – Flying. Since I was a baby, aviation has been a huge passion of mine. Between you and me, it’s been more of an obsession – posters on my walls, model airplanes on my dresser, a bed in the shape of an airplane, and countless trips to LAX with my father Sunday morning to watch planes land since the age of two – but let’s just stick with calling it a passion. Since starting flight training I earned my private pilot’s certificate, my instrument rating and my commercial pilot’s certificate in both single and multi-engine aircraft. However, what was I to do with a commercial license when flying has always been meant to be a hobby rather than a profession. What could I do to bring more gravitas and meaning to my hobby?

in Phoenix to a loving foster home in Carlsbad just hours before the dog would have been euthanized. Pilots n Paws has brought so much purpose to my life in aviation. Prior to working with Pilots n Paws, flying was very self-serving. I was incredibly happy to be able to fly, fulfill a lifelong dream of mine, and to continue to explore new destinations and find new challenges in the skies; however, there is something inherently dissatisfying about something when it is entirely self-serving. Now, when I start my engine with an innocent animal in the back seat, I feel like I am doing something purely good. Learn more at PilotsnPaws.org.

I stumbled upon Pilots n Paws, an organization that focuses on bringing together willing pilots with animals in need. I was elated when I found this organization because I knew they would provide me the opportunity to marry my love of animals with my love for aviation. To date, I have rescued 17 animals. My rescue flights have ranged from transporting a broken cat to a special needs vet in Santa Rosa, to bringing a mutt from a kill shelter

with Rabbi Adam Lutz

Escape Rooms are the new fad activity in which to participate with three to four of your best friends. The goal is to escape from a locked room by solving a series of clues, with no direction what-soever, within an hour. I am proud to say that I am two for two in escaping from these rooms and I found each experience filled me with excitement, wonder, and joy. Of course all of this is intentional and planned by the designers who are experts in "gamification." These game designers purposefully design games to include what Dr. Jan McGonigal calls an "epic win." She defines an "epic win" as, "an outcome that is so extraordinarily positive you had no idea it was even possible until you achieved it…it was almost beyond the threshold of imagination and when you get there you are shocked to discover what you are truly capable of." I contend, that by filling our children's Jewish education with "epic wins," we create an environment where it is exciting, meaningful, and thrilling to be Jewish. On April 8th, during The Big Fill, our religious school experimented with what it would be like to bring "epic wins" into a Jewish educational setting. The school broke up into groups of four to five to pretend they were a Syrian family trying to acquire basic living essentials. They needed to find a store which kept moving so as to avoid Syrian guards who were trying to commandeer the items the families needed to live. Each group needed to solve a set of puzzles, related to ideas of slavery and freedom about Passover, in order to reach their final destination. Once solved, each puzzle offered up a code which allowed students to open a locked box containing another clue. By the end students understood the difficultly of acquiring basic supplies in Syria, made connections to ideas about slavery and freedom in Passover, and understood why The Big Fill was a helpful social action project. But, students didn't only learn from our mini-escape room, they were excited to engage. As I walked around the school, I witnessed students with their heads down, huddled in close groups, intensely concentrated, and working in close excited collaboration. Students raced around the room, trying to discover which box their clue would allow them to open. Failure didn't matter, if a group misread a clue, it just motivated them to work harder and think deeper. All of these were signs of learning objectives that games can provide. Games teach students that they can participate in a mission that matters, that they can push the limits of their own capabilities, and that working together in collaboration is the key to solving life's most challenging puzzles. Add those learning objects to all the content the students learned about Passover and The Big Fill, and I would say that was a powerful day of learning. And all of this from a simple game. 4

Tons of Donations for Syrian Children!

When Emanuel congregants heard there was an organization, Save the Syrian Children, that had a way to get medicines and other supplies to Syrian children, they wanted to help. “How do we make a real difference?” they asked, “it’s such a big job.” Rabbi Bassin provided the answer: partnership! Building on a successful effort at Stephen Wise, Emanuel members rallied about a dozen LA organizations to begin #TheBigFill. The work culminated in a Passover donation drive that brought in hundreds of contributions—two-and-a-half tons of clothing and food for Syrian children. Earlier, tons of medical supplies from a generous, local hospital were delivered to Syrian doctors, donated through the efforts of one of our own doctors. On Sunday, April 8, over 100 amazing volunteers from Emanuel and across LA (even Nevada), from eighth-grade to 80 years old, came together to sort, count, and box about 12,000 essential items of clothing and food into nearly 120 boxes. On Tuesday, the 2-1/2 tons of boxes were picked up, now on their way to Syrian children by way of Israel. But there is more work to do! To help Save the Syrian Children, go to SaveTheSyrianChildren.org. For more on our ongoing work at Emanuel, see tebh.org/SocialJustice. Temple Topics
