In these pages you will find all of our planned programs, services, learning and engagement opportunities. It is our hope that you take the time to see the wide variety of activities and occasions for connection that will take place at Temple Emanuel throughout the year. Notice when we are having special musical guests, or special commemorations during our Shabbat cycle this year. Take note of the intriguing lineup of four challenging conversations that will take place on weeknights, and the learning offerings, which are divided into 3 or 4 week mini-classes. You can find out about our NextStage programs for adults, and Rabbi Geller’s innovative ChaiVillageLA, which is engaging hundreds of members. Please look through and pick a couple of ways you will participate in the community this year – you can contribute to the LOVE and sense of community that fills this synagogue.

WELCOME

W

elcome to the year 5777 (2016 – 2017) at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. On behalf of my dedicated clergy colleagues, Rabbi Sarah Bassin and Cantor Lizzie Weiss, along with Rabbi Emerita Laura Geller, I’d like to welcome you to our new prayer-learning-engagement booklet. As you have heard from the pulpit this High Holy Days, this year our theme is LOVE. Unlike previous years, this will remain our theme for the entire year. LOVE will be the subject of at least one sermon a month. The theme of LOVE will be found in our email announcements and teachings and programs. The beginning of spring will be a season of love in the congregation. With the world filled with so much negativity and hatred and violence and tension, we need to return to the roots of LOVE, and hold tight those words from the holiness code in Leviticus: “LOVE Your Neighbor as Yourself.”

The first chapter of Pirkei Avot contains bookend statements by two men named Shimon. The first, Shimon the Righteous said words that many of us know through the song: “The world stands upon three things, Torah, worship, and acts of loving-kindness.” The last verse of the chapter is a statement by Shimon son of Gamliel, who said, “The world stands upon three things, judgment, truth, and peace.” The two statements are reflecting two aspects of our pursuits in the world, and, indeed, in this synagogue: The first words are the deeds that keep the world (and Temple Emanuel) standing: Torah is learning of any kind; worship is prayer, meditating, singing, or however you connect to your internal spirit; acts of loving-kindness are the ways we engage with each other through compassion and action. The second set of three pursuits are our aspirations: judgment is desired so that we can have the difficult conversations that can lead to enlightenment; truth is found in the exploration of the self and the world; peace is charted by reaching inside the soul, and outside with one’s neighbor. Torah, worship, acts of loving kindness, judgement, truth, peace - all of these pursuits will be happening at Temple Emanuel this year. Together we can make it all happen through that lens of LOVE, the powerful force that helps us live a fulfilling life.

L’shalom,

Jonathan Aaron Senior Rabbi

ABOUT TEMPLE EMANUEL

There is more than one way to be a Jew... Since our beginning in 1938, Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills has been a sacred and diverse community in which people of all backgrounds come to mark life's passages and discover a Jewish way of making sense of this world. As a modern Reform Jewish congregation and synagogue in Los Angeles, we take our inspiration from learning and wrestling with Torah in order to discover what is relevant and enriching to our lives.

There are many different doors that open to a more meaningful Jewish life including Jewish learning, Jewish culture, Jewish tradition, compelling worship, social justice, community, and spirituality. Our goal is to be a mezuzah at those doorways, greeting and welcoming you. Whether you are a Jew by birth, by choice, or a member of an interfaith family, we encourage you to explore your own Jewish path within the embrace of our nurturing, intergenerational community. 6

We will also look at other poetry throughout the ages and discover whether thoughts of love transcend time, or has our understanding changed? The Music of Love with Cantor Lizzie Weiss According to Kabbalah, “God created the world because love needs another to love.” Whether seeking our love of God, our love of one another, or our love of Torah, the sultry tones of a good love song have always elevated simple words to a place of emotion. We sing the words of the Torah because we need to bring a deeper sense of beauty to the text. We chant a gorgeous alternative melody when we chant Song of Songs because this text exudes love. The melody found in the Song of Songs trope (musical presentation specific to cantillation marks found in Song of Songs) has created the base for many melodies used at weddings, whether for processional songs or even in the Sheva Brachot (the seven blessings). This series explores traditional and contemporary texts as well as melodies that create the basis of “Jewish love music” today.

Rabbi Gold was selected by the Jewish Daily Forward as one of the most inspirational rabbis in America (2015), and Zoketsu Fischer is a Senior Dharma Teacher at the San Francisco Zen Center. For more information, visit tebh.org/CultivateChesed.

We all know the joke -- two Jews, three opinions. Our identity as a community has been built on the premise that disagreements make us stronger, smarter and more resilient. The rabbis described this phenomenon as "makhloket l'shem shamayim" -- an argument for the sake of heaven. Unfortunately, in our world, it is easy to consume media and exist in social circles that only reinforce what we already believe. At Temple Emanuel, we are blessed with a community that reflects a broad political and social spectrum, and we embrace the growth that comes when we listen to opposing [diverse] views. This year's Behrendt conversation series will have elements to push all of us out of our comfort zone -- regardless of who we are and what we believe. If you want to be challenged to make your opinions more thoughtful and more nuanced... join us.

Boycott Divestment Sanctions: A Fresh Look at the Jewish Community's Strategy

Competing Visions for Israel: JStreet and a Settler in Conversation

What Reform Jews Can Learn from Chabad: An Evening with Rabbi David Eliezre, author of The Secret of Chabad

Challenge the assumption that the international Jewish community and Israel have a tense relationship with Muslim-majority countries. Join Temple Emanuel and the American Jewish Committee in welcoming the Consul General of Azerbaijan, Nasimi Aghayev, to understand this Muslim majority nation's unique relationship with Israel and Jews worldwide.

Emotions run high in the Jewish community in responding to the boycott divestment sanctions movement (BDS). People and organizations with different philosophies find it hard to discuss, let alone cooperate on the issue. This forum will provide a space for thoughtful conversation to advance and sharpen effective Jewish communal strategies in combating the nefarious elements of BDS, while productively engaging progressives who are drawn to the movement as non-violent resistance.

Jewish settlers and JStreet have experienced their fair share of demonization in the Jewish community and beyond. While they both have the goal of ensuring a secure Jewish future, their vision for the path to that objective could not be more opposed/divergent?. What happens when we stop listening to our echo chambers of those who agree with us and hear out the other side? Join Yishai Fleisher – Spokesman for the Jewish community in Hebron, and Alan Elsner, Special Advisor to the President of JStreet in conversation together as they each articulate the case for their respective visions for the Jewish state.

Many Reform Jews find Chabad's unique form of Jewish evangelism unsettling. But the movement's success is undeniable -- having grown from an obscure Eastern European Chassidic sect to a resilient network that serves all Jews, even in the most remote corners of the world. Rabbi Sarah Bassin will engage author of The Secret of Chabad in conversation about the philosophy and tactics of Chabad's outreach. What can we, as Reform Jews, learn from Chabad while still retaining our most core values of pluralism and egalitarianism?

Sacred Conversations: The Most Important Conversation You Will Ever Have We hold several gatherings around end-oflife issues. We help members with important discussions around Advance Health Care Directives, and start the conversation with families about their wishes around this topic. This year we are creating opportunities for these types of important conversations, including gathering in people’s homes to discuss Jewish views about end of life decisions, choices a family needs to make in planning a funeral, and how to prepare an ethical will for those who come after you. If you are interested in helping in this effort, contact Rabbi Geller at NextStage@tebh.org.

Wise Aging Groups

ChaiVillageLA In past generations people often lived in villages – communities where people, young and old, spent time together and kept an eye out for one another. As we grow older many of us want to stay in our own homes and neighborhoods, and that takes a village. Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills has joined with Temple Isaiah to create this village, ChaiVillageLA. It is inspired by Jewish values, part of a nascent national movement called Village2Village, and supported by a three year Cutting Edge Grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of LA. This village project is open to anyone of any age who is a member of either synagogue who is willing to support the values of the Village, commit to four hours per month of service to the community, which could include anything from running a program like a back yard gardening group to providing a helpful service to another ChaiVillageLA member. Those hours can also be offered to the synagogue as greeters for services or other special events. In order to receive the services this community offers you need to live within a specified area, but to participate in any of the programs you can live anywhere.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Join a four to six session group led by a congregant facilitator where you can explore the opportunities and wrestle with the challenges that come along with growing older. The text is Wise Aging: Living with Joy, Resilience and Spirit, by Rabbi Rachel Cowan and Dr. Linda Thal. New groups are being formed; contact RabbiGeller@nextstage.org to indicate your interest and whether you prefer a day or evening group.

ChaiVillageLA launched this summer after a year of planning and is already being recognized by the Jewish media as a cutting edge initiative. For more information go to the website www.ChaiVillageLA.org and then contact Devorah Servi at Devorah@tebh.org. 27
