This Fall at Temple Emanuel... Why Anti-Semitism Matters to More than Just Jews
A Behrendt Conversation Series Event and our 2019/5780 Yom Kippur Contemporary Issues Forum Wednesday, October 9 2:45 pm, 8844 Burton Way Anti-Semitism is on the rise as a global phenomenon, and while Jews are worried, we must recognize we are not alone in our plight or alarm. We must have the conversation about hate beyond our echo chamber to understand its implications for Jews and non-Jews alike. Two non-Jewish experts will contextualize why anti-Semitism matters to society at large. Eric Ward of the Western States Center and Mehnaz Afridi, author of The Shoah Through Muslim Eyes, will help us discern how anti-Semitism manifests across the political spectrum. What are the root issues that merit our attention, and how can the Jewish community be more strategic and effective in combating the rise of anti-Semitism in a world of growing extremism? See page 8 for more on this year's Behrendt Conversation Series, or visit tebh.org/Behrendt for all information.

Dear Friends, It’s been an incredible nine months here at Temple Emanuel. I want to first and foremost thank everyone for your kindness, generosity and warmth in welcoming me into the TEBH community. We have achieved much in my short time here thus far and I look forward to many more accomplishments as we continue the journey together in the years ahead. 5780 is a transitional year for Temple Emanuel and I fully believe when all is said and done we will look back in reflection and realize that it was also a transformational year for our community. Please do not hesitate to reach out directly with any concerns or questions you may have. Come November 1, while our clergy team remains in the Clark building, much of our administrative staff is moving just two blocks South, into temporary office space for the next few years in the Bubble Factory building located at 8840 Wilshire Blvd (at the corner of Wilshire and Clark). Even though the address will be different, as usual, my door will always be open. Shana Tovah—A happy healthy New Year for all! Matt Davidson, Executive Director
Apple Cake
with Alex Kojfman, Dir. Marketing & Membership
I found this recipe online and enjoyed it with my family. I hope you all enjoy it too! The original recipe by Deb Perelman can be found at smittenkitchen.com/2008/09/moms-apple-cake/. For the apples
For the cake
5 to 6 medium sized apples, (I used 2 large honey crisp, 2 envy, 2 large golden, 2 granny smith – I had plenty left over.
2 3/4 cups (360 gm) flour
4 large eggs
1 tbs baking powder
1/4 cup (60 ml) orange juice
1 tsp fine sea or table salt
2 1/2 (13 ml) tsp vanilla extract
1 cup (235 ml) melted browned butter (or melted butter, olive, coconut, safflower, sunflower, and vegetable oil also work)
2 cups (400 gm) granulated sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 5 tablespoons (65 ggm) granulated sugar Recipe
1 cup (130 gm) walnuts, chopped (I didn’t use this, but the original recipe suggested it.)
Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a bundt pan. Peel, core and chop apples into 1-inch chunks. In a bowl, toss apples with cinnamon and 5 tablespoons sugar and set aside. Melt butter on med-high in a sauce pan. Watch carefully. Let the water boil away, keeping an eye on it browning. Stir constantly to avoid burning. It will froth and it will be challenging to see the change in color, but the aroma will make it all worth it. Once browned, pour liquid butter in a measuring cup and place it in the freezer for 20 minutes to cool down. (Note: When you remove the measuring cup from the fridge/freezer you will notice there is less than one cup of browned butter. Just add a little water so it reaches to 1 cup. Cooling the butter as much as possible is essential to prevent it from cooking the raw eggs when you add it in.) Sift the flour and stir together the baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, orange juice, vanilla and eggs. Remove the cooled butter from the fridge/ freezer and add it to the wet ingredients bowl. Mix wet ingredients into dry ones; scrape down the bowl to ensure all ingredients are incorporated. (Tip: Do not over mix the batter.) Pour half of batter into prepared pan. Spread half of apples (and their juices) over it. Pour the remaining batter over the apples and arrange the remaining apples on top. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool completely before running knife between cake and pan, and unmolding onto a platter. Enjoy!
The Steinbaum School Building
on 8844 Burton Way has been a home to more Jewish spiritual moments than you can imagine. For over 40 years, students studied Torah (and math and English and science, too), sang, performed on the stage, celebrated holidays, and made lifelong friends. Our adult congregants have also studied and prayed, met in meetings, celebrated and mourned together within these walls. To so many of us, the building has been our spiritual home for a long time. On Simchat Torah, October 20, we will celebrate the building and our experiences there with a ceremony to say goodbye. You can come explore the building, share stories with friends, and participate in helping to bring the Torah scrolls over to our sacred spaces on Clark Drive. It is an historic moment for our temple, and we hope you will join us.

I remember the dedication ceremony with Rabbi Shapiro and Cantor Krawl marching Torahs from Clark Drive into the new Steinbaum building. I remember starting Hebrew School (which was three days a week back then) in that building. We would get Jewish news broadcast over the school's PA system on Saturdays. It was narrated by Ted Sharfman. –Mark Schwartz
Ladder of Light By Ruth Weisberg Ladder of light in the sanctuary first lingers then ignites the blonde in the second row like the second hand it sweeps Time’s hearth Welcome home As you wait the ladder of light climbs the ark’s curtain rung by rung beyond the eternal light you cannot follow yet One of my best memories of the Burton Way building is how it provided space for teaching many spiritual and ethical topics presented by our wonderful clergy and guests. Not only did it encourage you to think in a different way but it gave you an opportunity to connect with a variety of people who over time became your close friends. The intertwining of knowledge and friendship...I will miss it. –Bobbe Banks Salkowitz Temple Topics

Thursday, February 20, 7:00 pm, 300 N Clark Drive Continuing in the vein of “makhloket l’shem shamayim”—argument for the sake of heaven, this year’s Behrendt Conversation series will bring discussion worthy topics to Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. From gun violence prevention, to anti-Semitism, and abortion, Rabbi Sarah Bassin and her esteemed guests will spark meaningful conversation on these important issues. Rabbi Bassin explains, “makholket l’shem shamayim is a way of saying—there is an importance in hearty debate or meaningful arguments. Our sages wanted to show an appreciation for constructive conflict and respectful disagreements. They saw it as a path towards uncovering truth.” In creating a space and a dialogue around these oftenpolarizing topics we can attempt to illuminate and challenge some of our own beliefs and biases. Get to Know Your Temple Board Presidents... Where were you born?
What is a favorite memory at Temple Emanuel?
Myra Lurie: Chicago. My family moved to California when I was five.
GW: I was invited a year ago to be part of the strategic planning committee and get involved with the plan to sell the building. From there I got to know the board and clergy a little better and was excited when they asked me to join the board.
Scott A. Stone: Springfield, MA, but when I was one we moved to Indianapolis, IN, and that is where I was raised.
What are you most excited about in the coming years?
ML: I had a phenomenal time traveling with Rabbi Laura Geller and a group of congregants on a Jewish heritage Danube River cruise which I organized in 2015.
Kristin Jameson: I was born in Newport Beach, California. I have lived in Beverly Hills since 1997.
Geoffrey Wharton: Born in Brooklyn. Moved to LA in April of 2009 when I started working for the LA Dodgers. Tell us a little about your connection and involvement with the temple before becoming president. KJ: We joined TEBH in 1997 when we moved to Beverly Hills. We wanted our children to attend Religious School. We celebrated our childrens’ B’nai Mitzvah here. I got involved with Temple leadership after co-chairing the Mishloach Manot program for many years. I have served on the board for seven years and I am in charge of governance, human relations, and leadership development. ML: I’ve been on the board since 2011. My husband, David, was Bar Mitzvah’d at Temple Emanuel. SAS: My children went to the ECC, the Religious School, and now our PASSPORT teen program. I was cochair of the New Emanuel Capital Campaign and oversaw the renovation of 300 N Clark Drive. Our son, Harrison, is president of TEMPTY.
KJ: I am excited about the future of TEBH and am proud to be a part of a talented team that is working tirelessly to move Temple Emanuel forward. ML: We are very fortunate that TEBH has an incredibly creative, visionary clergy team and lay leadership who are committed to responsibly support and sustain our synagogue in a manner that honors its past and remains relevant and meaningful to congregants of all ages and stages. SAS: The hallmarks of Reform Judaism are choice and change, and how we adapt to both. We are embarking on a new and exciting chapter in Reform Judaism that involves both choice and change, and I am energized every day to be a part of that. GW: We are all doing it for the same reason, it’s a unique time for Temple Emanuel and we are looking to create a sustainable model for the future. Also, I happen to feel this amazing sense of community in what we are doing.
KJ: Through my work on the Purim basket project I got to know many more congregants and this really made me understand that TEBH is a wonderful, spiritual community. I truly feel that I am part of this special community.
SAS: My favorite memory of Temple Emanuel is the congregation coming together every High Holiday season to embrace our traditions, while our clergy helps me reset my compass for the coming year. GW: Susan and I fondly recall Rabbi Jonathan Aaron's lovely renewal of vows ceremony on our 25th wedding anniversary. Tell us a little about what you recently read, or what are you currently listening to? KJ: I enjoy cooking and cookbooks. ML: I love rock 'n' roll. Just saw Adam Lambert with Queen and can’t stop watching Bohemian Rhapsody! SAS: I just finished reading The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal and finally finished Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow (took me a year!) GW: I really enjoy history books. Recently I read Rick Atkinson The British are coming and it’s a must for history fans.
