Dear Rabbi... I have never understood this: why do some synagogues (like Temple Emanuel) celebrate two days of Rosh Hashanah, while others only celebrate one?

Dear Celebrater, The origins of Rosh Hashanah’s two days is connected to the 2 day celebrations at the beginning of the three Pilgrimage Festivals (Sukkot, Pesach, Shavuot) and goes back to the time of the Mishneh (around 200 CE). The beginning of the new month was announced by the Rabbinic Court in Jerusalem, who would hear eyewitness testimony, verify it through questions, and determine the new month, and new moon had begun. Beacon fires, seen from a long distance was lit, and watchers on faraway hills set their beacon fires as soon as they saw

Submit your questions to DearRabbi@tebh.org them, continuing the relay “until one could behold the whole of the Diaspora before him like a mass of fire” (Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 2:4). Later, messengers were used, and it could take a long time for them (and the beacon fires) to reach the whole of the diaspora to announce the beginning of the new month. Due to the time it took for the new month to be announced, those outside of Jerusalem could not be sure when the festivals began, so they celebrated two days to ensure they celebrated at the correct time. Rosh Hashanah has an added difficulty. Since Rosh Hashanah is the first day of the month, no messengers could be sent because the Holy Day began, and they couldn’t work, so the announcement would have to wait one day. The rabbis determined that if two days were celebrated, even in Jerusalem, the chances

were that one of those days would indeed be the holiday. Since in modern times we are able to determine, with certainty, when the month begins, the Reform movement believed that there was no need to continue to celebrate two days at the beginning of the festivals, so Reform Jews only celebrate one day. There are still some congregations (like ours) that continue two days of Rosh Hashanah, and Israel also celebrates two days, to honor the ruling of the Rabbis who suggested two days of celebration to be sure it is done on the correct day. – Rabbi Jonathan Aaron

Adam Lutz – Our New Rabbi Educator

It is hard to believe that I have already been part of the TEBH community for two months and already feel at home. Over the past two months, as numerous families have warmly welcomed me and shared about what makes TEBH such a special community, I have, in turn, shared about the values I hope to bring to TEBH and the Department of Education. In July, I wrote about my "ABCs" and underscored the value of authenticity. In honor of the upcoming High Holidays, I think it is only appropriate to write about the second value which motivates me every day, "betterment." Each year, when I reach this season of reflection, I ask myself, "How have I grown in the past year? How have I become a better version of myself?" Throughout my life I have asked myself these questions in all sorts of circumstances: starting a new school year, watching loved ones battle with illness, working for the Navy, and now starting a new journey with a new congregational family. The beauty of these questions is that they provide us an opportunity to always strive to be the best version of ourselves, no matter the circumstances life throws our way. I pray that this year, each of us is able to go on our own journey towards betterment, and I'm hoping to share my journey with you. So as you see me around TEBH, tell me about how you are working towards "authenticity and "betterment" and ask me about my last core value “C,” as we continue on this Jewish journey together. 4

Prayer of the Month How We Speak The Amidah—our standing prayer that allows for our silent moments of more personal prayer—it opens and closes with some of the most compelling words of poetry from King David. At the beginning, we say:

Adonai, s’fatai tiftach, ufi yagid t’hilatecha. God, open my lips that my mouth may declare your praise. And at the end we say:

Elohai, n’tzor l’shoni meira us’fatai midabeir mirmah Guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceit.

The opening and closing words both speak to the power of, well, words. According to tradition, King David recognized that worlds can be created and destroyed by what comes from our lips. It’s a tremendous power that we have—to praise, persuade, and encourage—or on the other hand, to demoralize, deride, and destroy. King David reminds us to reflect on what the purpose of our speech is before it escapes our lips. And it’s a reminder that we often need. As we embark on the new year of 5778 with the theme of striving to bring a greater sense of humanity into this world, we remember that this is as much about our words as it is about our deeds. –Rabbi Sarah Bassin
