Iyar/Sivan 5775
From the Rabbi’s Study… “Vayar Moshe et kol hamelacha, vehinei asu osa kaasher tziva ashem ken asu vayevarech osam Moshe.” Moses observed the work (of the sanctuary) and saw that they had done it just as Adonai had commanded. So Moses blessed them. Exodus 39:43 The Medrash teaches us that Moshe's blessing of the people is the model upon which the custom of wishing someone “Yasher Kochach” upon successful completion of a task. “Yasher Kochach” is commonly translated as good job or job well done. The actual translation is (as many things in Judaism) the subject of two different opinions. Literally translated the words “Yasher Kochach” mean may your strength be enriched. Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, 10401105) teaches us to read the words as follows “Yeesher Kochach” or may your strength go straight. Let us examine the context of Moses' original blessing and perhaps it can offer us some perspective. The Mishkan (sanctuary) was complete. This was a monumental task that took tremendous attention to detail. Given the herculean nature of the task, the people needed to rejuvenate. In blessing the people the words “Yasher Kochach” as may your strength be enriched is certainly appropriate. The construction of the Mishkan was a cause that could be described as a Raison D'être. The Children of Israel had a defined goal and a mandate to fulfill it. Now that the Mishkan was in place, some might be of the mindset the task is complete our work is done. “Yeesher Kochach,” may your strength go straight, is a blessing that addresses this mindset. Yes the task is complete, May you build on this accomplishment and focus your strength on other Holy endeavors. This month, we will install the sixty-third president of Temple Israel. As we welcome our new president, we are afforded with the opportunity to express our gratitude to the outgoing officers and board members. We wish them “Yasher Kochach,” may your strength be enriched. You accepted the mantel of leadership during a period of transition and uncertainty. Through your efforts Temple Israel is spiritually, fiscally and emotionally ready to envision our future as the seacoast's center of Jewish life. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
