From the Rabbi’s Study… I pen these words in the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Emanuel AME Church of Charleston, South Carolina. Nine faithful servants of God were murdered. We pray for the souls of our brothers and sisters in faith, may God embrace them in eternity. Rev. Clementa Pinckney (41) received his first appointment to pastor when he was 18 years old, according to the church’s website. By age 23, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives and by 27, he became South Carolina’s youngest state senator. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and two children, Eliana and Malana. Rev. Sharonda Singleton (45) was a speech therapist and girls’ track and field coach at Goose Creek High School. She is survived by her husband, Chris and three children, sons Chris and Caleb and daughter Camryn. Tywanza Sanders (26) died trying to protect his elderly aunt. A graduate of Allen University in South Carolina, he received his Business Administration degree in 2014. He is survived by his parents Tyrone and Felicia, his siblings Shirrene Goss (Andre'), Maynard Terry and Emerick Sanders. Cynthia Hurd (54) was the manager of one of the busiest branches of the Charleston County library system. The library issued a statement remembering Hurd as “a tireless servant of the community who spent her life helping residents, making sure they had every opportunity for an education and personal growth.” She is survived by her husband, Steve and five siblings. Myra Thompson (59) was ordained as a minister just minutes before she was killed. She is remembered as a devoted mother, wife and community leader. She is survived by her husband, Rev.
