From the Rabbi’s Study‌ As I look out my window, I see the beauty of summer. The sights, sounds and experiences of the season make it hard to believe that the month of Elul is upon us, and Rosh Hashanah is rapidly approaching. This reality brings us to the realization that we must begin to prepare for the Hebrew School year, and the High Holiday season. In an effort to help you prepare for the High Holiday season I offer the following notes in the form of a High Holiday guide.

Parking: As an accommodation to our community, the city has afforded complimentary on-street parking on the days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you receive a parking ticket please submit it to the Temple office no later than Oct 20th.

Hebrew School Opening Day

Accessible Parking: The Court Street parking lot is reserved for people with limited mobility. The City has designated four spots on State Street with handicap signs. These spots have direct street level access to the building. These spots are reserved for people with limited mobility who are unable to navigate the slope in our Court Street lot.

Large Print High Holiday Prayer Books: Our explanatory High Holiday prayer book (white binder) is printed in a large print format. Magnifying glasses are available from the ushers.

Hearing Enhancement Equipment: Our sanctuary is equipped with hearing enhancement devices. Through the use of lightweight headsets, those with hearing difficulty can receive a clear, amplified version of the service. Headsets are available from the ushers.

Homebound and Hospital Bound Individuals: In the event that any individual within our community cannot make it to services, arrangements will be made for a home/hospital to facilitate Tikyat Shofar (sounding of the Shofar). Similarly, the Rabbi will recite Yizkor for those who are unable to come to Temple and recite Yizkor. Please contact the Temple office for details.

Out of Town For the Holidays? Please contact the office and we will be more that happy to locate an area Temple where you can attend High Holiday services. Most nationally affiliated Temples offer reciprocity. If you would like Temple Israel to send a reciprocity request for you please contact the office.

Need a Letter For Your Employer or School? Feel free to contact the Temple office to request such a letter. Most districts have an established policy regarding excused absences in public school for 2 religious observances. If you feel that direct

communication from the Rabbi would be helpful, I am more than happy to assist in this area and am willing to speak directly with anyone who might benefit from such a discussion.

Holiday Apparel: The Talaysim (prayer shawls), available at the entrance of our Temple, are the kind popularized in post-war Jewish life. A more traditional style is the full-body, large woolen Talit. There is nothing like wrapping yourself in the full-body hug of a traditional Talit. Some of our members have purchased extraordinary Talaysim with unique designs.

Consider enhancing your High Holiday experience by purchasing a unique or artistic Tallit. A complete variety of Talaysim are available online or at The Israel Book Store in Brookline, Mass.

Young Children’s Service (for families with children age 0-6): Young Children’s Services will take place on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, in the Levenson Social Hall, located on the lower level.

This service will take place after the Torah procession.

The service will begin at approximately 10:15am.

Family Service (for families with children age 7-12): Family Services will take place on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, in the Levenson Social Hall, located on the lower level. This service will take place after Shofar service on Rosh Hashanah and after Yizkor on Yom Kippur. The service will begin at approximately 11:40am.

Childcare (children age 18 months-8 yrs): We are happy to announce that babysitting will once again be available in the preschool area from 8:30am-1pm on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. Information regarding registration will be forthcoming in the High Holiday information packet.

Kever Avot – Cemetery Visit: It is traditional to visit family gravesites and recite memorial prayers during the days before the High Holidays and/or during the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These visits offer moments of recollection and prayer, honoring the memory of those who are no longer with us. We will have a congregational Kever Avot/ Cemetery Visit on Sunday, Oct 2nd at 1pm. If you would like a memorial prayer chanted at another time, please contact me at the Temple office.

Bring Your Shofar To Services: In remembrance of the victims who died in the September 11th attacks, we will sound a communal shofar blast on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. All those who own a shofar are encouraged to bring it to services the first day of Rosh Hashanah. If you would like a crash course in shofar blowing, please contact the Rabbi.

Bring Food To Temple on Yom Kippur: A table will be set up in the State Street lobby to collect food donations on Kol Nidre eve. We ask you to donate the amount of food which you would generally consume during the 24-hour period in which you are f asting. Donations will be distributed to people in need

by Seacoast Family Promise.

Children’s Shofrot: The Temple purchased a stock of special shofrot for the children, who will be invited to the bimah to participate in the shofar service.

Calling All Youth For Havdallah Processional: Yom Kippur is brought to a close with a very beautiful ceremony which includes the Havdallah processional. Each youngster is given a safety candle as he/she proceeds up the aisles of our dimmed sanctuary. The Havdallah is chanted, and the service concludes, with a final shofar blast.

Tashlich: Please join us for Tashlich as we cast off crumbs into a body of water at the beginning of the New Year. The ceremony reminds us that new beginnings are possible and that transformation of our previous behaviors is a reasonable goal. We symbolically discard negative behaviors that are hurtful to ourselves by tossing pieces of bread or another food into a body of flowing water. This is a BYOB event (bring your own bread). Please remember to bring bread or crackers with you. We will convene at our State Street entrance after services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Together we will walk to Prescott Park for Tashlich. The Tashlich service takes no more than 15 minutes.

Fasting: Possibly the most widespread observance connected to Yom Kippur is fasting. It is a way of reminding ourselves that we are mortal beings, dependent on God for sustenance. On Yom Kippur, we break down our pride through an exercise of selfdiscipline and begin the year in very humble fashion.

It’s customary to precede the fast with a simple meal that is lightly digestible and not highly seasoned.

Athletic Shoes: Yom Kippur is about impressing God with improved actions rather than impressing others. Therefore, tradition discourages wearing clothing that is considered luxurious. Customarily, athletic shoes are worn as an option to leather shoes.

White Clothing: It is customary to wear white clothing on Yom Kippur. This is reminds us that we are striving for purity in our interactions with each other and God. Another reason for wearing white on Yom Kippur relates to the concept of equality among God's children. Yom Kippur is not about fashion or wealth. We wear simple white clothing expressing that we are all equal in the eyes of God.

Yom Kippur Break Fast: As in past years, our congregation will be sponsoring a Yom Kippur Break Fast immediately after the Havdallah service. Please join us as we begin the year together. RSVP to the Temple office by September 25th.

Special Mitzvah Opportunities: As our congregation grows there are multiple opportunities to provide for programming and projects that are not included in our operating budget. There are many opportunities for special mitzvah contributions throughout the year. To participate in this endeavor please contact me at the Temple office or Fran Berman, the Temple President.

Please join us for an open house for prospective, new and current members, sponsored by the Membership Committee. This event will begin with services at 6:15 pm, followed by a light meal and dessert. This evening will be a great chance to reconnect with friends after summer and welcome some new faces to our community. Prospective and new members will have a chance to speak with Rabbi Senter, board members, and other Temple members.

Education Greetings from the Education Committee and the Hebrew School! Yes, we agree, it is hard to believe that summer is winding down and students are getting ready for secular and Hebrew school already.

Fortunately, students and parents alike have much to look forward to in the upcoming 5777 school year. We are very excited to be welcoming back old friends and new. The first day of Sunday school is September 11th and Wednesday Hebrew school begins that week as well.

There are open houses Aug 31st & Sept 7th from 5:30-7pm and we welcome new and existing student families to check out our facility and ask questions of Head Teacher Noa Bourke and faculty.

We have a new theme for this year’s school year: SHEMA: to listen! This wonderful concept encapsulates so much concerning spiritual learning. Students will experience topics involving what it means to listen to our planet, our communities, our family and friends, ourselves and our G-d. When you listen, you are paying attention and hearing others, setting the framework to grow spiritually and emotionally.

Breakfast at 9:30am, at 10:30am Speaker Judith Spanier, Esq discusses 'David vs Goliath: The Touro Synagogue Trial and The Legacy of America's Colonial Era Jews'. Come hear how the oldest Jewish congregation in the US tried to seize ownership of Touro, America's oldest synagogue. RSVPs to the Temple office encouraged for this event.

Ritual Now that Labor Day has come and gone it’s time to look toward the fall which brings the High Holidays in October. Here are a few comments about items that won’t be covered in the High Holiday mailing.

There is still time to place your listing for this year’s Yizkor Memorial Book of Remembrance. The absolute last deadline is September 15th and sign-up forms are available on the Temple website or at the office. Thank you to those who have already placed

their listing! With your help the Yizkor Memorial Book will provide a source of personal inspiration and collective support for our community.

During services it’s wonderful to see friends and family but please keep the following in mind as we try to minimize distractions in the sanctuary. Please enter and exit through the State Street entrance which is in the back of the sanctuary. If you enter via the elevator, please walk down the outside aisles if possible and not in front of the Bimah. The ushers will briefly restrict entrance during a few parts of the service (the sermons and speakers, parts of the Amidah, and at the beginning of the Torah Service).

Assignments for reading selections will be made by the ushers as the service progresses rather than making the selections in advance. If you are approached by an usher for a reading selection, if at all possible, please say YES! It’s a mitzvah, a great help to the ushers, and will make the service run smoothly, which means finishing on time.

Most of all, thank you for choosing to worship with us at Temple Israel. We strive to create a space where people can find meaning and comfort in our religious observances. Adult Ed: Temple Israel Parenting Discussion Group Dr. Laura Rubin, clinical psychologist, will facilitate a parenting discussion group to discuss the book The Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel, Ph.D. Sample topics will include:  Parenting with Jewish values  Understanding your own family of origin and the impact on parenting  Strategies to teach children independence, self-control, and compassion The group will consist of discussions as well as guided reflection exercises. Refreshments served.

Mr. Zamir has been a member of Israel’s Foreign Service since 2011, previously serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Israeli Consulate in Mumbai, India. He grew up in Jerusalem where his family has lived for nine generations. He received his law degree from Hebrew University in 2008.

In Anticipation of New Beginnings

By Fran Berman, President In the rhythm of temple life, September marks the time when we prepare for the New Year. Rabbi David and the people who will help lead the High Holiday services are putting the finishing touches on plans for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur observances at Temple Israel -- sermons, speeches, Haftarah and Torah chanting. Our head of school Noa Bourke and our teachers prepare for a new season of learning, with class lists, lesson plans, schedules, and materials organized and ready to go.

Facilities manager Dan Hastie polishes up the building for an influx of people, and the newly painted, refreshed historic sanctuary will reopen.

Alissa Holmes tracks membership renewals, welcomes new members, and keeps communication flowing to the congregation so we all know what is happening and when. And each of us in the congregation begins to get ready for the holidays, making plans to attend services, arranging to observe the holidays with family elsewhere, or simply preparing ourselves spiritually.

This fall, I am working toward some new beginnings in my own life. I have been cleaning out the basement and storage areas on my house of 30+ years in preparation for possibly putting the house on the market and moving into smaller quarters. The process has been challenging. I had accumulated a lot of stuff over the past 30 years, and each item carries with it memories, associations, and emotions. Many of the items have additional meaning for my children, creating a complex web of interests. As I decide what to keep and what to discard, I am torn by competing instincts: hold on to items from the past or let them go, creating space for new growth. It is a process that is both difficult and cleansing.

The High Holidays have these same qualities of memory and hopeful anticipation, looking backward and forward. At Rosh Hashanah, we greet the New Year with apples and honey, hoping for a sweet, fruitful period in our lives. Then on Yom Kippur, we reflect back on our sins and atone for any pain we have caused to others and ourselves. It is also a time

to forgive those who have hurt us. The Yom Kippur fast cleanses us to start a new period in our lives.

The themes of repentance and hope are previewed during the brief service on Selichot, which really kicks off the High Holiday season. I will reflect on those themes with special intensity this year, having just come through a period of examining my past (through a basement full of items) and pondering my future. It is a rigorous process, but in the end, it leads to the possibility of a fresh beginning. Wishing you all clean basements and fresh growth in 5777.

Seacoast Family Promise Please Help Temple Israel Be a Part As was written in the last Doorpost, SFP is asking all its member congregations to contribute to the success of their biggest annual fundraiser by creating and donating two gift baskets for its auction in November.

Only one person responded last month, so I am trying again in hopes I will not have to tell the folks at SFP that we cannot participate. I am looking for an individual, family, group of friends, or existing TIP committee to take this on. If you enjoy shopping, organizing, creating -- this is the job for you! If you aren't into that but could help pay for the items to go in a basket, please let me know that too. Baskets should be organized on a theme, such as arts & crafts, BBQ, sports, wine & cheese ... or anything you can imagine! All items must be brand new. At the end of World War II, the Italian government sought to restore a sense of community within its war ravaged towns, and gave every provincia a small amount of money to use towards this end. Many towns built community centers, but in the town of Reggio Emilia, literally brick by brick from the rubble, the townspeople built a school for the children, an “investment for the future.” The school was named Scuola XXV Aprile, commemorating the day of liberation from the Nazis. And with the vision of Loris Laura Sher Malaguzzi, who understood children to be “strong, powerDirector, ELC ful, rich in potential, and driven by the need to construct knowledge,” a unique approach to education had begun. Children were allowed autonomy and the freedom to pursue their imagination and interests.

Teachers were engaged to stimulate, rather than facilitate learning. And the environment, within the classroom and out in the community, became the third teacher, inviting wonder, curiosity and investigation.

Now, seventy years later, the “Reggio Inspired Approach” is making its way into preschool classrooms worldwide, including our Early Learning Center.

Our classroom is newly painted, well cared for and aesthetically pleasing. Our materials are developmentally appropriate, creatively displayed, and easily accessible, enabling the children to follow their interests and support their social interactions. And we strive to create a curriculum that draws from the children’s mutual interests, encounters with their environment, and a love of Judaism that includes our culture, values, stories, rituals and ways of being.

As the new school year approaches, I look forward to once again working with my wonderful assistant, Elian Tackeff. And even though this will be my sixth year as Director of the Early Learning Center, I continue to feel honored and blessed to guide and learn from young children and am humbled to be entrusted with their care.

Our first day of school begins on September 7, 2016, and Elian and I will be warmly welcoming five new preschoolers and five returning students to the Early Learning Center. We are excited to have these young children and their families join our Temple Israel Community and embark on what we hope will be a wonderful journey into Jewish life.

Summer is winding down, making way for another beautiful New England fall, our Hebrew School is getting ready for the new school year, and that means that Youth Group is back up and running again!

Save the date for our Bowling and Pizza event at Bowl-O-Rama, on Sunday, October 16th.

Our first Youth Group event for 4th through 7th Graders is on Sunday, September 25th. We will be going to Firefly Pottery and painting the “Dag Gadol”, the Giant Fish, that swallowed Jonah. Yes, the one we read about on Yom Kippur, to remember G-d’s willingness to forgive those who repent. But unlike the fish, we will be having pizza for lunch!

Maybe your children will let you use their creations, complete with a little Jonah figure, as a centerpiece on the Break the Fast table!

We want to make sure that any child who wants to attend Youth Group events can do so regardless of economic circumstances. This year we will once again cap the price of events at $12, but we will also include the real cost on fliers, hoping that parents who can afford to do so, will pay the full amount.

Has your child or grandchild enjoyed Youth Group in the past? Did they maybe have a blast picking and eating apples at Applecrest Farm? Or maybe they had a jumping kangaroo of a time at Blitz the Trampoline place?

Trivia Sundaes, Hanukkah Party Dreidel Tournaments, Beach Cleanups, Scavenger Hunts, Bowling, Mini Golf – Youth Group gives our children opportunities to make wonderful memories with their Jewish peers and helps them feel connected to our temple and to Judaism.

I hope you will consider making a donation to Temple Israel Youth Group Fund, so that we can continue to offer these opportunities, and make it possible for more children to attend. What a lovely way this would be to honor a child’s birthday or bar/ bat mitzvah or maybe a graduation … Thank you all in advance!

Adult Biblical Hebrew Reading Courses: Sept 2016 Learn to answer your own questions about what the Torah says and how it says it.

Beginning Biblical Hebrew Grammar & Reading 101. Some working knowledge of the Hebrew alef bet required. The first class focuses on full review of the alef bet, then study of basic noun forms and verbs follows. Some homework necessary to memorize vocabulary. Meets alternate Tuesdays 7:00pm – 8:15pm in Temple Library.

Memorial Lights Remembering our dear departed is an important Jewish tradition. A beautiful way to memorialize our loved ones in perpetuity is with a plaque in our sanctuary. Memorial plaques can be reserved or ordered for $250.
