By the time you read this, England’s football team will either be getting pilloried by the press or celebrated for beating the odds and topping their group. Of course, as Tempus is an international publication, we’ll be watching every game but, given the magazine is made in Clerkenwell, London (the former centre of Britain’s clock and watchmaking business, don’t you know), we must admit to a little bit of bias when it comes to watching the England games. With the tournament in mind, we’ve compiled an amusing guide to the watches that would make our starting 11, based on the qualities that make each suitable for a particular position. Find out more on page 59.

Tempus is proud to work with some of the UK’s finest timepiece and luxury writers, including:

Elsewhere, we head to Cannes during the famous film festival for a fabulous fashion shoot, check out the best in bar and restaurant design from around the world, test drive McLaren’s Ferrarichallenging 650S and visit Munich for the world-renowned High End Show, a celebration of the very best in audio technology. If you’re looking for the ultimate home entertainment set-up, your shopping list starts on page 103.

One of the world’s most highly respected watch writers, Ken also pens pieces for Tempus on high end audio products, which is another of his passions

Finally, for those who need to get in shape for summer, our wellbeing feature on page 116 is the first step to a happier, healthier you.

Enjoy the issue.

On page 67, Clive picks his favourite international golfing destinations (plus a trio of more esoteric choices) and reveals the courses that every keen golfer must play. Clive’s work can also be found in publications such as Golf Today, Great Golf, various national newspapers and on worldgolf.com

A watch writer for several years, Chris’s work can be read in the Mail on Sunday, the Daily Telegraph, GQ and Wired, among others. He also writes about technology, travel and motoring editing Yahoo UK’s science and technology section. On page 59 he reveals his perfect 11 in our tongue-in-cheek world cup of watches feature.

G STAA D, SW I TZ ER LA N D Given our passion for fine watches, we have a deep affinity with all things Swiss and Gstaad, one of the country’s most exclusive ski resorts, is somewhere Tempus has visited time and again. The resort’s world-famous turreted hotel, the Gstaad Palace, is also worth a look out of the winter season, too, thanks to its thrilling options for summer visitors. Guests can challenge themselves with hot-air ballooning, para-gliding and hiking on the glaciers, or enjoy a fondue trail and lunch at the literal cliffhanger Refuge L’Espace or a traditional Swiss picnic at the Palace’s breath-taking Walig Hut. Oh, and watch geeks note, the tiny village boasts several prestige watch boutiques, including a beautiful Breguet standalone store.

Heritage. Because of the ever-increasing interest in classic cars it’s little wonder car manufacturers are cashing in with heritage departments to cater for their historical models. Ferrari has been at it for years; Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin too, all having departments dedicated to keeping owner’s older vehicles on the road. Indeed, any high-end or luxury manufacturer will have some facility to provide parts, restore, service and repair its old cars. Jaguar, however, has recently announced it’s taking an altogether new step backwards by building six brand new Lightweight E-Types to complete the planned 18-car series that were never built. It will use the allocated but unused chassis numbers from 1963, each car lovingly hand-crafted by Jaguar’s finest craftsmen. The cost? Nobody’s saying, but with just six available there’ll be a long queue among collectors. jaguar.co.uk

TRENDS AND NEWS FROM THE BEST BARS AND KITCHENS HÉLÈNE DARROZE AT THE CONNAUGHT Oh my, this is frustrating. We’re awaiting course eight of nine in the woodpanelled wonder that is this Mayfair dining room when a call comes in from the babsysitter. Our daughter’s a bit ill and yes, she’s ill enough that we should return home. Gah.The final two courses of what has been my most memorable dining experience this year will always remain a mystery to me. It turns out she was fine, by the way. Still, the restaurant staff gave us a small cake each to munch on as we jumped in a cab. An amusingly low-key way to end a double Michelin-starred meal. A protégé of seminal French chef Alain Ducasse, and head chef at her eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris, Hélène Darroze has become arguably the most celebrated female chef in London following her appointment at the helm of this venerable dining room in 2008. Her nine-course tasting menu starts with a neat touch – a solitaire-style board filled with marbles denoting different types of food, the concept being you relegate any you don’t like to the side of the board. Ever the adventurous eater, all my marbles remained in place, ushering in a selection of seriously great dishes which kicked off with some beautiful foie gras, served with Williams pear, ginger and wild sorrel. A firm, pearly piece of hake followed, its skin crisped nicely and surrounded by clams and calamari, while my partner enjoyed white

asparagus, lobster and seaweed. This was a modern, luxurious spin on the cooking and ingredients of Darroze’s native south-west France, all complemented by the attention to detail – Bayonne ham sliced tableside by a hand-cranked machine, delicate crockery and glasses that are changed with every course – that’s the hallmark of this level of hospitality. We were perhaps four glasses of wine in – each more impressive than the last – when that fateful call arrived. Who knows what delights Darroze could have offered us for dessert, both wine and food. The only answer, of course, is a repeat visit. And soon. the-connaught.co.uk

THE GORING Tucked away in Belgravia, The Goring hotel is renowned for having hosted various royals in its 100-year history – it holds a Royal Warrant, after all – so it’s fair to say our expectations were high. I’m delighted to report that these were not just met, but exceeded. It’s staggering to think that just around the corner from the hustle, bustle and belching fumes of Victoria station lies this calm and relaxing jewel the capital’s crown.

Reviewed by Scott Manson

Reviewed by Megan Hobart From the moment we arrived we enjoyed service fit for a queen or, indeed, future king. The restaurant manager, Mikko Jappinen, leads a team who are sincerely attentive in their service, knowledgeable and deeply passionate about the well-judged menu. We’d arrived early so the restaurant was quiet at first but the dining room soon filled, creating a comfortable, buzzing ambience. It’s a gem of a place, and recently refurbished, with the high

ceilings, grand chandeliers and exquisite décor giving the room a bright and welcoming feel. For my main I opted for the glazed pork belly with pig’s cheek and crisp suckling pig, while my partner went for the salt marsh lamb. Each item of our carefully crafted meal represented British produce at its best and, frankly, it was tough to say no to options such as the fish stew, a glazed lobster or fresh grilled mackerel. There’s some great theatre at play in the room, too, with a hefty beef wellington doing the rounds on a silver platter, before being expertly carved tableside. The wine selection was also strong, with the sommelier picking out some unusual glasses to match each course. And to finish? A selection of British cheeses, of course, featuring a blue so punchy I could still taste it as I made my way home, weary but glowing after a night at The Goring. the-goring.co

We’ll always have Paris By Peter Dean The 1976 ‘Judgement of Paris’ blind tasting was a watershed in the history of wine, and proved to a disbelieving world that the best Californian wines could be the equal of the French. It effectively caught out leading French critics and winemakers who overall judged the Californian wines to be better in both red and white categories, beating the likes of Mouton-Rothschild and Montrose. The Judgement was one of the inspirations behind Sir Peter Michael setting up his own winery in California in 1982, making wines that have recently scored 100 points from Parker. Michael also runs the five-star The Vineyard (www.the-vineyard.co.uk) in Berkshire, a luxury wine hotel whose outstanding one Michelin-starred restaurant is this summer creating a sumptuous homage to ‘J of P’. Eight courses are each matched with a pair of wines – one Californian and one French. The hotel has plenty of choice from more than 23,000 bottles. First up on my gastronomic odyssey was an earthy wild garlic veloute, egg and parmesan cream. Sommelier Romain Bourger had picked Clarendelle Bordeaux Blanc 2012 (leamingtonwine.co.uk, £12.49) to take on La Proportion D’Oree 2008 (vineyardcellars.com, £45.56), a more serious oaked sauvignon blanc that faced up to the food better and made the French wine seem unassuming and almost shy. 1-0 to the Californians. After a Californian Riesling brilliantly served solo in a black glass disguise (we guessed), it was on to monkfish baked with two types of asparagus and fennel. Here a very fine ‘Les Criots’ Meursault, Ballot-Millot 2011 (bgwm.co.uk, £54.99) with its leafy-green youth took on another chardonnay from Monterey, Talley Chardonnay 2011 (henningswine. co.uk, £19.99) whose crisp fruit and vanilla just pipped the French. 2-0. The French fought back with Choreyles-Beaune, Mailliard (hedonism.co.uk, £26.90) whose light, wild strawberrytinged Burgundy was perfect with

Asian-style brill. The American pinot, also from Talley, Arroyo Grande (laywheeler.com, £29) felt too alcoholic, even brash. 2-1. Now onto the heavyweights – two massive syrahs to accompany wild duck – a spectacular Cornas, la Sabarotte, Courbis, 2004, (tondonia.co.uk £78) with tar, prune and kirsch against Cuvee Christine, Donelan, 2011 (frw.co.uk, £35), a more Old World-style North Coast syrah. 2-2 was fair. After a delicious late harvest Rhone served solo with dessert no.1 it was back to battle with thyme-poached rhubarb served with Rieussec, 2005

(frw.co.uk, £39) and Eisrebe, Phelps 2011 (winedirect.co.uk, £31.95 375ml), the latter’s Scheurebe grape was a revelation with hints of citrus, pineapple and orange blossom. 3-2 to the States. The cheese course sealed it though with Haut-Bages Averous, 2006 (bbr. com, £31) beating L’Espirit des Pavots, Peter Michael, 2006 (frw.co.uk, £73). A close-fought draw at 3-3. A brilliant evening with terrific, knowledgeable staff up for the fun of it, and a real eyeopener on what the West Coast can still do. Make sure you’re there for the next judgement day.

THAMES-SIDE TERRACE With its stunning views of Tower Bridge and fabulous French menu, Le Pont de la Tour has long been a favourite with the Tempus team. We were delighted, then, to discover that the restaurant’s terrace has had a beach-side makeover, complete with new outdoor cocktail bar an d a coastline-inspired bar menu featuring dishes such as sharing salads, crab and crevette buckets, and delicious shrimps flambéed au Pastis. Très bon. lepontdelatour.co.uk

How to manage your wealth

Caroline Garnham

Caroline is the founder of familybhive.com

AS A FORMER private client lawyer, I‘ve worked with some of the world’s wealthiest people. What always surprised me, though, was that there was no single digital platform where they could glean all the information they need, from private jet travel to taxation in one place 24/7, which is why I created familybhive.com. Most people think that the wealthy engage the best advisors to avoid tax, fly in private jets to swanky parties and dine on slinky yachts

among a star-studded cast. It’s not really like that. Today’s rich are predominantly made up of regular folk who have worked extraordinarily hard. John Caudwell (of Phones4U fame) grew up in poverty in Stoke-on-Trent, while Dragons’ Den’s Duncan Bannatyne started off selling ice cream from a van. The problem that these rags to riches millionaires face is that they have no inherited knowledge as to how to manage their wealth and who to trust. In my handbook Eight Simple Steps to Success I set out how UHNW individuals need to manage their wealth and advisors; setting goals, planning, managing time, getting there, getting more, delivery, retaining and maintaining, and trust. Here, then, are some tips on what the superrich need to know if they are to avoid losing wealth. Are your advisor’s goals aligned with yours? It may not be sensible to ask your banker whether you should be selling a property. He has ‘Assets Under Management’ targets to meet and if you turned your property into cash for him to invest, he would be closer to reaching his targets. Selling a property may not be a good decision if you want to maximize your returns. When you are not there to watch them, what are your staff up to? If you have five homes and a full complement of staff in each, you need to ask the question: what are they doing when you are not there? Are they drinking your Petrus, wearing your jewellery or driving your cars? You need to get someone to manage them. Are you being mis-sold an investment? If someone says that an investment is HMRC approved, how can you be sure? Take Gary Barlow. He was mis-sold an Ice Breaker tax

- 35 -

scheme and journalists had a field day at his expense. It is not easy for the wealthy to know when they are being mis-sold a dodgy tax product or a fabulous investment opportunity. The wealthy are a minority, so very little press coverage is given to what they need to know to alert them that what they are doing or not doing is wrong. Are you keeping a record of what you are buying? Think for a moment about your cupboards and wardrobe at home. Are they full of things you have simply forgotten about, the shoes you never wear, the book never read and the food you have never eaten. Now imagine the problem multiplied by a thousand. A founder of a business is disciplined and focused in his business, but as soon as the business turns into cash, investments and assets are acquired and simply forgotten. One of our members moved house and was phoned by the new owners a few days later to say that they had forgotten to take with them a priceless Turner painting. It was behind a door and simply overlooked. Another member forgot that he had bought a street of shops. Most people think that the rich go to tax advisors to pay less tax, while the truth is that HMRC runs the most sophisticated tax legislation in the world. If the superrich in the UK were to go to a tax advisor, they would invariably pay more tax; not less. However, a tax investigation is an unpleasant and costly experience with no right of appeal or compensation, and thus must be avoided at any cost, even if it means paying more tax for peace of mind. No mater what your level of wealth, it pays to look after the details.

The

Got a question about timepieces? Put it to AskMen.com’s Watch Snob. Be warned: you may not like what he has to say… grand designs Hey Snob, I own a Seiko, ref SBGA031. Its movement is far superior to many luxury watches and the quality of the parts and look are excellent. Why doesn’t Seiko have the ‘glory’ of the luxury watches? Is it the price, marketing, or some other reason? You own a Grand Seiko Spring Drive diver, which is a perfectly nice watch, but what in the world do you mean by saying that the movement is superior to many luxury watches? I happen to think Grand Seikos in general are very appealing and they have the excellent industrial finish and unpretentious devotion to functionality that characterised Rolex once upon a time. Spring Drive is a very particular kind of approach, first of all and, secondly, Grand Seiko in general represents, like any other watch, an attempt to balance often conflicting priorities, including price, quality of construction, fineness of finish, volume of production and exclusivity. I happen to think at the moment it does those things very well, but I’d hardly go so far as to say “superior to many luxury watches” without a very, very great many qualifications. Anyhow, the answer to your question depends very much upon what you mean by luxury; the term by itself is far too vague to be useful. But sir, let us be sensible. Seiko is not perceived as a luxury watchmaker because by and large it is not one, nor has it ever been. They have some luxury marques that represent an extremely tiny fraction of their production. And quite honestly you and all other Seiko fans should be thankful they’re not so-called luxury watches. Look at the

quality of execution and finish on the dial, case, hands and movement of a Grand Seiko watch. Now ask yourself what such quality would cost if it said “Made in Switzerland” on the dial.

The push prize Watch Snob, I need your help! I’m eight months pregnant and while society believes I should get the push prize, I believe my husband deserves one as he has been a saint through my entire pregnancy. We have a baby coming so I don’t want to spend a fortune but want to get him an awesome watch that will still look good many years from now. He has the basics – Rolex, Hamilton, TW Steel, Rado and a few other less impressive watches. Can you point me in the right direction for a decent watch for him in the ball park of £1,180-£1,775? Bless you, Madam. At that price point, you are right on the verge of being able to afford something really memorable – far be it from me to suggest something more expensive than your stated budget and so obvious, but a gentleman will never regret owning the Omega Speedmaster Professional, which has the added advantage of giving him something with which to time your contractions. It’s still the only mechanical watch ever flightcertified by NASA and it’s the watch that the Apollo 13 crew used to time engine course correction burns after their cockpit instruments gave up the ghost. There is still, even today, nothing like it or even close for the money.

A timely investment? Dear Watch Snob, It is my personal opinion that Omega watches are in the same league as Rolexes. My question for you is: what is the appreciation factor of an Omega Moonwatch mechanical compared to, say, a Submariner; is it worth it to spend almost twice the amount on a Rolex than on a comparable Omega timepiece, vis à vis their appreciation rates. Could you give me some dope on the above? If you want “dope” (whatever that is) on rates of appreciation there are any number of selfstyled experts who will be happy to offer you an opinion based on nothing more than their love of the sound of their own voices. OK, look, my psychiatrist and my physician have both counselled me to make at least an attempt to master my temper, so let me try and shed a little light on why this sort of thing makes me exceedingly cross. With few exceptions, watches are a terrible investment and approaching them from that perspective leads to nothing but a drawerful of watches that will disappoint you both aesthetically and financially (unless you’re one of those plutocrats who finds their entertainment in buying and flipping limited-production Pateks). Yes, you can sell the Rolex for closer to what you paid for it than the Speedmaster, but if that’s what’s going to sway you, you’re not actually interested in watches, and in the guise of asking me a question about watches, you’re actually asking a rhetorical and deadeningly uninteresting question about money.

A-list actress, former model, dance partner to John Travolta and mother of three, Uma Thurman’s prolific career has seen her juggle cult classic successes (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) with softer mainstream releases (The Accidental Husband, My Super Ex-Girlfriend). She’s also the perfect face to represent elite brands, as evidenced by her role as long-time poster girl of sophisticated timepieces for TAG Heuer and spokeswoman for Louis Vuitton. Raised by her mother Nena – a former Swedish model turned psychotherapist – and her father Robert, a noted Buddhist scholar and advisor to the Dalai Lama, Uma’s career has seen her work in every corner of the globe. But wherever she’s been, a close eye on style and fashion has ultimately lit her path.

cinemafestival / Shutterstock.com

So, Uma, you seem to be in a good place right now… You need to fight for the life you want and lately I feel very fulfilled and happy. I feel that my faith that things would one day fall into place for me has proven justified. Sometimes it’s been a struggle, but really that’s normal for everyone.

You’ve seen yourself through some well documented relationships. Is it hard having to live your life in the public eye?

Being the daughter of highly gifted parents, you’ve also spoken of pressure before your acting career even began.

Life is full of surprises, that’s for sure. But things are unpredictable and I’ve spent too much time worrying about things not going well. That’s probably a dangerous habit, a self-fulfilling prophecy if you’re not careful, so these days I’m more about seizing the moment, embracing happiness and seeing where that takes me.

I have wonderful parents and was lucky enough to have a ver y healthy and creative childhood. But my adolescence was difficult because for some reason I internalised the idea that I had to live up to this impossibly high intellectual and academic standard set by my father and mother. My parents never really pressured me that way at all, other than the fact that dur ing dinner table conversations we were expected to defend our ideas and arguments.

Has your experience as a single mother impacted upon your career ambitions? It’s more that it wears on your psyche when you feel alone at times, and because of the recognition factor that comes with being an actor it’s not that easy to meet people. I love acting and I love being part of that world, and it’s the same kind of thing that every divorced parent goes through.

Okay, so tell us about your decision to put your name to some fantastic w r istwatch brands over the years, particularly TAG Heuer. Well, there is this whole accessory thing going on when it comes to fashion and it ’s really important, particularly for women. Putting my name to a brand of wristwatch was really expressing the ultimate accessory, because a good watch says so much about style and appearance and, indeed, your personality. Which of those watches stood out for you?

Being a watch ambassador seems like one of the best spin-offs from a movie career imaginable…?

Andrea Raffin / Shutterstock.com

I think the Diamond Fiction watch was an incredible piece of design – a watch and an item of jewellery. I’d never seen anything like it, and it’s with that kind of innovation that really clever design is taken forward. A beautiful piece of art. Wristwatches have a base in tradition, but that doesn’t mean ideas can’t be taken forward – modern ideas.

For me, personally, it has been a view into something I would probably never known anything about. The precision, care and attention that goes into making these objects is just incredible, and yes, I do feel very lucky.

That was an interesting shoot, and good fun. I’m not one of those people who would want to go so deep as to start talking about subverting stereotypes. For me it’s just about what enables you to look good. The fact is, women can be beautiful and attractive at any age and wearing most things! I think you are responsible for casting your own aura and drawing people to you – or not, depending on your state of mind. tagheuer.co.uk Do we take presentation and appearance too seriously?

So you’re in your 40s now – any concerns?

I think everyone wants to look as nice as they can – is there anyone who doesn’t get a boost when they see themselves looking great? But as I said, it’s not something I take as seriously as I used to. I think much of how I feel comes back to the fact I didn’t look like most kids when growing up. I was always seen as very weird and strange. But when I started getting a lot of work in films as a teenager it was my revenge against all the girls who made fun of me!

It doesn’t worry me. I feel much calmer and secure about who I am and the kinds of things I’m doing in my life now than I ever have. So all those things inform your general spirit and that makes getting older seem more like an enriching experience than one where you worry about your appearance. Ultimately, I can look after myself. Getting older has been a process of realising that I wasn’t as grown up as I had thought. When I was a teenager people often referred to me as jaded. Now, looking after children is a huge responsibility and it can be difficult at times to manage your career and still be the mother you want to be. It tests your nerve and your willpower, and you can feel lonely sometimes, but you become much stronger for it.

You’ve spoken of being ‘overly reflective’ in the past. What do you mean by that? I just get very caught up in my head and I think everything over a million times. But I feel I’ve come a long way since my 20s when I was a real mess – not that I’m a really bold and self-confident woman today… But I’m making things easier for myself by not agonising over my fi lm choices and other issues in my life.

With that in mind, you were brave enough to wear a men’s watch for that Vogue photo-shoot – the Rolex Datejust. Was that a statement you were intending to make?

goalkeeper For our goalkeeping inspiration, we look no further than Gianluigi Buffon, Italy’s number one for the past 17 years. Another Italian with impeccable pedigree is the Panerai Radiomir 1940. Updated this year with a stunning chronograph version, as well as being Italian and in possession of a noble history at the top of its field, it is as tough and dependable as a keeper should be. It is, in a nutshell – all together now – the very definition of a ‘safe pair of hands’.

defence In the fullback positions you’re looking for versatility and good judgement above all else. A world-class left or right back is as at home putting in crosses as they are tackles. Similarly, the Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph Travel Time is an exceedingly versatile watch; one of the world’s most iconic steel sports watches given an unprecedented string to its bow in the form of a dual-time complication at this year’s Baselworld.

defence On the opposite flank is one of the few watches with sport at the heart of its creation. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Day and Night is the archetypal dual-purpose watch – flip the clous de Paris dial over and it’s time for business. At 83, you might fairly say it’s longer in the tooth than some but as any manager will tell you, there’s no substitute for experience. And it is still going strong, after all.

defence The best central defenders have always been hard-as-nails characters. These days, they can’t just be lumps, however; they’ve got to have a certain poise to them and, crucially, be good in the air. Sounds like a job for a pair of burly pilots’ watches. The Bremont MBIII isn’t the biggest, but it’s famously tough – each knurled GMT piece has been shaken enough to simulate the 30-year lifespan of a helicopter.

defence Next to the Bremont we’ve picked the Breitling Navitimer 46mm. Breitling may be flying in the face of current trends by scaling up the Navitimer this year, but there’s no doubt it’s one heck of a statement watch. Like a muscular centre back defending a corner, you’re not allowed to forget its presence for a second. It’s not (just) a brute though – just look at and twist that tachymetre dial. There are definitely brains to match its brawn.

- 59 -

midfield Central midfield is arguably where any match is won or lost. So we’ve picked two watches which – while not unattractive in the slightest – boast their strongest attributes under the dial. First up, its the Omega Seamaster 300 Master Co-axial. As the name reveals, 2014 has seen a new line of co-axial movements spreading across the Omega range, cribbing from last year’s groundbreaking Seamaster 15,000 Gauss. With a silicon balance wheel and a 60-hour power reserve, as well as the aforementioned magnetic resistance, nothing is going to faze this watch.

midfield Next to the Omega is the Oris 110, a watch that scoffs at extra time with its ten-day power reserve. A limited edition to mark Oris’s 110th anniversary, it’s the brand’s first in-house movement in 35 years. Quite a return to form. The power reserve indicator speeds up as days go by, alerting you more quickly to a drop in energy levels. When others tire and stop, this one will just run them off the park.

midfield Strength and power are vital in defence and central midfield, but out on the wing it’s all about speed. The Zenith El Primero needs no introduction as one of horology’s eminent engines – it has been beating at 36,000vph since 1969. The El Primero Lightweight, first shown last year, is now production-ready, and with its carbon-fibre and aluminium bodywork (totalling just 40g), it’s as eye-catching as a winger should be.

midfield Like Gareth Bale coughing politely as he steps up next to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Chopard 8HF L.U.C. Power Control takes the Zenith’s 36,000vph and raises it to 57,600vph – 8HZ, as indicated by the name. In addition to being blisteringly quick, the black ceramic 8HF also manages to out-menace the El Primero - the small red second hand, bezel inlay and high-frequency logo are devastatingly cool.

An element of unpredictability is prized so why look beyond the Cartier Calibre Driver?

strikers The rest of the team may do most of the work, but these are the galacticos, the players who command your attention and, frequently, the big money. A certain element of unpredictability is prized, so why look beyond the Cartier Calibre Diver? A watch that wrong-footed everyone when launched at SIHH this year, it’s a beguiling blend of style and substance – roman numerals meet international ISO standards for waterresistance and atmospheric or physical shocks. Diving is, unfortunately, also appropriate in more ways than one when it comes to the lamentable tactics often employed at this end of the pitch.

It may be simple by Max Busser's standards, but it's a beautiful watch

strikers Last but not least, every great team needs a player of mercurial ability; a precocious talent that does things you can’t quite understand but want, in fact absolutely need, to see again. We humbly suggest the MB&F LM 101. It may be simple by Max Busser’s standards, but it’s a beautiful watch (the only tourbillon in our team, fittingly enough) with a sublime contrast between the sunburst baseplate and enamelled dials. As the commentators say, it’s a cracking finish.

Looking for your next golf break? Here’s how to do it in style

- 67 -

- t r av el -

Let’s begin where golf began, in Scotland. Although the weather is often as unpalatable as the porridge, there’s no doubt Scotland is blessed with the very best courses in the world. Up in the Highlands, to the north of Inverness, lies Skibo Castle. Perhaps best known as the place where Madonna married Guy Ritchie nearly 14 years ago, and very much less well known for the fact that Sam Torrance married Suzanne Danielle there five years earlier, Skibo Castle is so far upmarket it’s almost off the scale. Set in 7,000 acres of top-notch terrain, it oozes class and quality. It’s another world where solicitous staff, pure luxury and fabulous facilities combine to create a very special atmosphere where billionaires, oligarchs, captains of industry, masters of the universe and the occasional down-at-heel journalist can unwind in the most magnificent of settings. Formerly the home of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American philanthropist, Skibo was converted into a members-only club by Peter de Savary in the 1980s. Although not a golfer, de Savary was perceptive enough to recognise that the game was the pursuit of choice for the wealthy and so set about building a pretty but unexceptional course along the banks of Dornoch Firth, just a short buggy ride from the castle.

- 68 -

- t r av el -

Claire Bruce (claire.bruce@carnegieclub.co.uk)

It’s another world where solicitous staff, pure luxury and fabulous facilities combine to create a very special atmosphere

Ten years ago an American called Ellis Short bought Skibo for a modest £23m and the course subsequently underwent a substantial makeover, which has transformed into something rather special. Eerily uncrowded – if there are more than four others on it you can count yourself unlucky to catch it on such a busy day – it’s now right up there with the very best. Immaculately presented, it at last matches the magnificent setting it occupies. And in the unlikely event you ever grow weary of it, there’s Royal Dornoch just a few miles away, which is rightly regarded as one of the greatest courses on the planet. According to the rules, you can only stay once as a guest at Skibo; so make the most of it. If you’re seduced by its beauty, you can join what is known as the Carnegie Club for a ludicrously modest £24k, on top of which you must contribute a trifling £8k a year and, of course, pay each time you go. Bargain!

- 69 -

- g-otordav t iel m es - -

With apologies to Gleneagles and Turnberry, both of which are terrific, let’s leave Scotland and pop over to Ireland for another outstanding resort course. Genuine links courses are a rare and protected species. To remark that suitable land is in short supply is as gross an understatement as to say golfers don’t like missing short putts. The right mix of topography and climate needed to create the appropriate terrain is harder to find than an Irishman who hates the taste of Guinness. Add legitimate environmental concerns, logistical considerations and financial constraints, and you can understand why new links courses are as rare as back-to-back eagles. So the creation of a majestic new links course is a genuine cause for celebration. Doonbeg ticks all the boxes. Having recently been acquired by Donald Trump, it’s no longer ‘Doonbeg’ but now labours under the heavyweight title of Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland, which rolls off the tongue like a slab of Readymix concrete. There’s not even a handy acronym. Tring O’Linkahot sounds faintly Irish but probably wouldn’t go down well with himself. Occupying a quiet corner of the craggy coastline of County Clare, the course was

created at the beginning of this century. Designed by Greg Norman, it weaves through towering dunes, skirts around sensitive areas apparently occupied by microscopic snails and runs alongside a two-mile stretch of sandy beach where mighty Atlantic rollers tumble in. Matching the quality of the course is the outstanding accommodation, the very best of which is to be found in the lodge watching over the 18th green. Made of stone and standing proud on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic, it ’s hard to believe this imposing building has not been there for several centuries. Although the suites inside are simply stunning, don’t get too upset if you’re not staying in one as you can still enjoy the same Atlantic view from the Long Room downstairs where breakfast is served. And the suites, houses and rooms elsewhere on the complex are just as tastefully furnished and supremely comfortable. In such an idyllic place it ’s hard to imagine what could possibly go wrong. But Doonbeg, as it then was, got into difficulties and was acquired by Mr Trump. If nothing else, the quiet and retiring New Yorker should ensure the survival of this simply wonderful place, no matter what it’s called.

Frederico Champalimaud (fchampalimaud@oitavosdunes.pt)

Let’s stick with the Atlantic coast but head south for our final golfing foray. It’s Portugal, but not the ever-popular Algarve. Just to the north of the seaside towns of Estoril and Cascais lies the lovely resort of Oitavos. In the extremely unlikely event that you’re coming by boat, it’s downstream from Lisbon on the mighty River Tagus just past the eighth lighthouse on the starboard side, hence the name. If I knew anything about contemporary architecture, I would now give you a detailed description of the hotel. I’m not and so I won’t, but I can tell you it has five stars, 142 rooms and is exceptionally comfortable. However, it’s nowhere near as appealing as the adjacent Oitavos Dunes course. Whether it’s a genuine links in the strictest sense is a matter of debate but what is indisputable is that it’s extraordinarily beautiful and a joy to play. Despite only having been created at the beginning of this century, it has already hosted the Estoril Portuguese Open four times. Occupying a wonderfully open, exposed and elevated site, it combines the exhilarating thrill of a breezy cliff-top track with the subtlety, finesse and springy turf of a lovely links. Very few trees have managed to grip on to the wind-blown sandy ridges that ripple down to the shore but there are plenty of bushes and enough serious rough to concentrate the mind. There are also sensitive areas where golfers must reluctantly abandon even the newest of balls in the name of environmental protection. The course also offers stunning views up to the mountains and breath-taking panoramas out over the Atlantic. One of the rocky outcrops just to the north is the most westerly point on mainland Europe. Cabo da Roca is the Portuguese equivalent of Land’s End and is worth a visit if only to admire the vertical 100m drop into the crashing waves below. Even if you suffer from both the ‘shanks’ and the ‘yips’, don’t consider jumping because golf, however well or badly you play, is one of the things that makes life worth living.

OF THE WORLD’S MOST UNUSUAL COURSES

If you’re an expert bunker player or simply bored with playing on grass, Al Ghazal in Abu Dhabi is for you. Apart from the greens, which are actually brown and made from a mixture of oil and sand, the course is all sand. If your ball lands on the fairway, you play your next shot from a little green plastic mat given to you in the pro shop, otherwise you hit from where it lies in the desert. The course is full-size, great fun and has hosted the World Sand Golf Championship. alghazalgolf.ae

Al Ghazal

Traditionally courses are designed by a single architect. The Legend Golf and Safari Resort in South Africa used no fewer than 18 famous golfers, each of whom designed one hole. But it’s not Justin Rose’s, Colin Montgomerie’s, Vijay Singh’s or Padraig Harrington’s hole that’s the star of the show but the 19th, or Extreme 19th as it’s called, that literally causes a quickening of the pulse and an adrenaline rush like no other. Approximately 1,500ft above the green, the tee box sits on top of a mountain and can only be reached by helicopter. After it’s been hit, the ball takes about 25 seconds to reach the ground. And there’s $1m reward for a hole-in-one. legendgolfsafari.com

Golfers who are rather sniffy about parthree courses and refer to them rather condescendingly as ‘pitch-and-putt’, should travel to Bermuda and tackle Turtle Hill, which is arguably the most demanding and delightful par-three course in the world. None of the 18 holes would look out of place at Pinehurst, Pebble Beach or even Augusta National. Venue of the recent par-three world championship, it’s simply stunning. fairmont.com

on the tour Max Kieffer was born and bred in the Rhineland region of Germany and is currently in his second season on the European Tour. Last year, the 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut. The 2014 BMW International Open at Gut Lärchenhof is a home event for him. In an interview with the BMW International Open Media Team, the BMW Golfsport and Air Partner ambassador discusses his anticipation ahead of the tournament, his goals for the season, his round with Rory McIlroy and the secret to his success. Max, you line up at the BMW International Open as a pro for the second time this year. What do you expect from your first ‘home event’ in the Rhineland? “I obviously hope for great support from my fans here in the region. I was born in BergischGladbach and now live in Düsseldorf, so I am a born-and-bred Rhinelander. I am really pleased to be able to take my place as a pro at the BMW International Open in my home region for the first time.” Does the fact that you are playing at home put you under any additional pressure? “I put pressure on myself to perform well at every tournament, but that pressure is obviously even greater at the only tournament on German soil, simply because it is so important to me. With fans behind me, I am sure I can find a few extra per cent out on the course.” How well do you know the course at Gut Lärchenhof – and does this Jack Nicklaus design suit your game? “I have practised there relatively frequently, but the tournament set-up is obviously different. I have often shot low rounds there when it has just been for fun. I hope that the course is relatively hard and dry during the tournament week, as my knowledge of the course will be even more of an advantage then.” What are the main challenges out on the course, and will you prepare specially for them? “When the rough is long, the course asks questions of every aspect of the game. With

that in mind, it will definitely be a complete player at the top of the leaderboard come the end of the week.” What are your goals for this year’s BMW International Open? “Ideally I would find myself in a position to challenge for the win come Sunday.” Last year, as a rookie, you wasted no time in achieving your goal for the season to secure your Tour card and narrowly missed out on your first European Tour title at the Open de España in Valencia in April. What are your goals for this season? “I hope to make it into the top 60 in the Race to Dubai and to be in contention at the odd tournament.” You could give yourself the best possible birthday present – you will be 24 on 25 June… “My first win at the only professional tournament in Germany – and in my backyard – that would obviously be awesome! But I am not focusing on that, but on playing my best golf and putting on a show for the spectators.” You have played alongside Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington – two of the biggest names in the sport. Were you able to learn anything from them? “It is fantastic for a younger player like me to be able to test themselves against the best players in the world at such big tournaments. I can obviously learn from players like Rory and Paddy. I have

- 76 -

noticed that the guys have more variety to their games and are more consistent on and around the greens. However, you also have to make sure that you concentrate on your own game.” Many European Tour players also play on the PGA Tour. Is that also one of your main goals? “I would first like to establish myself as one of the best players in Europe, then we’ll see what happens.” Another big dream must be to play in the Ryder Cup, which is taking place again this year. The top players from Europe and the USA will meet in Gleneagles, Scotland, in September. When do you think we might see you playing for the European team? “That is hard to say, so my answer is very pragmatic: I will represent Europe in the Ryder Cup when I qualify for the team or the captain offers me a wildcard.” You have already touched on the fact that Kieffer, Kaymer and Siem – the top three golfers in Germany at present – all come from the Rhineland region. Is there something in the air? Is it perhaps down to the carnival tradition? Or do you have another explanation for the performance of the Rhineland golfers? “I would not like to offer any bold theories. I think this idea that the whole area is a strong golfing region can really be traced back to the individual strengths of Martin, Marcel and me. At the same time, however, you have to say that we have a lot of good trainers in North Rhine-Westphalia,

- t r av el -

and the strength of depth among the juniors provides additional motivation and drive.” You have just secured a new contract as brand ambassador for Air Partner. Can you tell us about them? Air Partner has commercial, jet and freight divisions providing aviation charter services to commerce, governments and individuals around the world. I am closely associated with the private jet division, which organises on-demand charters for business and personal travellers. With the increasing demand for golf holidays, private jet charter is now considered a viable and of course luxurious option for groups of golfers who want to play the best courses in the world. We all know how pressured the tour schedule is and the distances you have to travel. Can you imagine one day owning your own plane as many of the American pros do? “The travel can be stressful as we cover such enormous distances during the course of the season! I know a lot of the American golfers have their own personal private jets, but it is smarter in my mind to charter than to own because planes cost a lot of money to run, and like cars, depreciate. Would you recommend private jet charter for groups of golfers holidaying together? Golfers love to play the dream courses around the world and Air Partner offers access to the most renowned, remote and exotic overseas golf destinations, avoiding the attendant delays, queues and hassles that accompany busy airports. Jet charter offers flexibility too, if there is a change in the weather Air Partner can often alter the destination; if the plays runs on or the party want to stay longer, the company can get a later slot. Private jets can be used for day returns too, enabling golfers to reach their chosen European golf destination, play 18 holes and return home the same day! What will you be doing for Air Partner over the coming year? I will be hosting a number of golf days and events for them and their clientele. This summer the World Cup is taking place in Brazil. Who do you think will be world champions? I am hoping for a Germany v Brazil final and that Germany win!

The Rivoli Bar at The Ritz With its luxurious late 1920’s design, the interior of The Rivoli Bar has been likened to a gorgeous jewel box. Murano glass chandeliers are suspended from gilded ceiling domes, while panelled walls in polished camphor wood veneer are decorated with delicate Lalique glass insets originally made for the Orient Express trains. The cocktail bar has an onyx marble counter lit from above and below, providing the perfect spot to pull up a chair and order one of these wonderful cocktails. theritzlondon.com

The Tallulah

Ramos Gin Fizz

The Rum Baroness

The Tallulah cocktail references the moment in 1951 when American actress Tallulah Bankhead sipped champagne from her slipper during a press conference to celebrate her arrival at The Ritz, London. It’s served in a Piper-Heidsieck champagne flute made in the shape of a Louboutin shoe, with its famous red sole. The cocktail itself is a concoction of soft floral aromas that recall the notes of perfume fragrances.

This classic of the 1890s and early 20th century acquired legendary status, in part because of the unique preparation involved at the time of creation. Henry Charles Ramos used to employ up to 30 “shaker boys”, who would shake the cocktail for as long as possible and then pass it along.

A delicate blend of rare essences – this journey of South American flavours is warmly luxurious with a subtly sweet finish.

Ingredients 30ml Soshu 30ml Cinzano Bianco 20ml plum and jasmine syrup Dash geranium essence Method Shake and strain into a perfume flask and serve, should the mood take you, in a shoe.

Ingredients 40ml Tanqueray 10 gin 30ml whipped cream infused with blood orange 20ml vanilla syrup 10ml lime juice 10ml lemon juice Method Shake all of the ingredients with ice and double strain into a large goose egg shell. Place the egg in a caramel nest and garnish with an orange twist and straw.

The sound of

NOW As much as high-end audio has suffered since the arrival of the iPod, streaming, downloads and the Ascent of the Musical Cretin*, one ray of light continues to shine. Quite why the High End Show (held in Munich every spring) remains the finest vehicle for extreme audio on the planet is the subject of much conjecture, but the basis of its success is in no small part attributable to the Teutonic mastery of organisation.

- 103 -

- h i g h-en d au d i o -

No other hi-fi show on the planet runs as smoothly. It doesn’t hurt, either, that Munich’s MOC exhibition centre is perfect for a hi-fi show, despite nerdish naysayers arguing that the rooms ‘don’t sound good’. [Fact: Only a schmuck goes to a hi-fi show to assess equipment. You can’t pass judgement on a sound from a system you don’t know, in an unfamiliar room, with music not of your choice. End of sermon.] The space is light and airy, the facilities convenient – even the food concessions sell edible comestibles … in a country that considers the potato to be an exotic gourmet staple. Other territories, especially the US and the UK, are excruciatingly jealous of the Munich show. Rather, they should be ashamed, because the US and the UK invented high-end audio,

yet between them they cannot muster an event to equal Munich. [Note: CES in Las Vegas is a trade-only show.] Instead, after other markets let hi-fi shows die slowly and painfully, Munich continued to support the concept of an extravaganza for all and now it owns the concept. How huge is Munich High End? It hosted a total of 452 exhibitors representing approximately 900 brands – that’s MASSIVE by any standards. Visitors? Roughly 18,000, and not just irritating hi-fi nerds, though such numbers were once the norm for nerdonly show attendance back in the 1980s. Surprise, surprise: there were even women in attendance – and that’s NEVER been the norm for high-end audio. Well, outside of the late, lamented TOP Audio in Milan...

As massive and global as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas every January is, Munich’s exhibitors still manage to unveil new products, despite the fact that there are only a few months between the two events. Yes, the models launched in Las Vegas were being shown to Europeans for the first time at Munich, but the plethora of post-CES debuts makes Munich a key show for all of its exhibitors; few manufacturers arrive with nothing new to display. What is so remarkable are the world-class launches, and not just the tweaky stuff. At CES, major brand debuts are just for the press. At Munich, the public enjoys the frisson of the new, too. Among them this year were state-of-the-art loudspeakers, such as Sonus Faber’s Lilium; KEF’s Blade Two; the MartinLogan Neolith; an entirely new range of amplifiers from Audio Research (yes, an American brand launching a family of products in a German show); Oppo’s and McIntosh’s first-ever headphones; Musical Fidelity’s long-awaited Nuvistor integrated amplifier; turntables from Vertere and EAT; lots of new vinyl LPs, recordcleaning machines, cables and headphones ad infinitum; and more.

ON THE RECORD: Audiophiles browse through the vinyl looking for rarities and collectibles

What I did see was remarkable: proof that high-end audio still has much to offer in an era of streaming

This being Germany, the show was also over-rich with horn-type loudspeakers, a local fave. Horns use large-throated, er, horns to spread the sound and increase the efficiency so they go loud with little power. And, no, nobody bothers to make jokes about Germans being horny. Surprisingly, Italians make only a few horn speakers… At times, Munich is overwhelming, even for jaded old journos such as I – Munich 2014 was something on the order of my 250th show in 30 years. I know that I missed stuff, but what I did see was remarkable: proof that high-end audio still has much to offer in an era of streaming, and at a time when the next generation of music lovers couldn’t care less about sound quality.

HORN FABRIK: Horn-style speakers were prevalent at the show, getting a big sound from a low power output

OBRAVO: Forget about Dre, These headphones (right) are all yoiu need for crystal clear sound THE VARIO'S: These quirky, playful speakers (left) proved a hit with audio-loving acolytes

Let’s hope the under-30s present learn from this: you’d have to be either deaf or stupid not to hear the difference between Astell & Kern’s AK100 Mk II digital player and an iPod, iPad or iPhone. You’d have to be a masochist to prefer Beats to Musical Fidelity MF100s. Munich provided the opportunity for regular consumers to hear this for themselves. Do I hold out any hope for the UK? No – we had our shot, blew it and are now left with insignificant regional shows hardly worth the train fare. Munich goes from strength to strength. If you’re a hardcore music lover and want to savour the latest and greatest without a salesperson breathing down your neck, a cheap return flight to Munich next year could be just the ticket. *A musical cretin is anyone who prefers earbuds over loudspeakers and considers the likes of EDM to be music. If we were talking food, he would prefer Pot Noodles over tagliolini at Don Lisander. And, yes, I’m an abject snob.

THE HEADPHONE JUGGERNAUT Like every show of the past five years, Munich was bursting with headphones and related accessories, such as amplifiers, portable DACs to fit between a PC or Mac and the headphones, headphone stands with built-in amps and superior replacement cables. The idea is simple: if the world is moving toward headphones over the more natural sound of loudspeakers, then make them better. Particularly interesting were new models from McIntosh, Musical Fidelity, Obravo and Oppo, with new amps from Chord, McIntosh, Carot One and countless others. Some feel it’s a long overdue backlash against bass-heavy, distorted Beats By Dr Dre, which replace sound quality with fashion value. (Is Dre a contraction of “dire”?) Models like the Obravo and the Oppo are so good you’d swear the sound was coming from outside of your head, instead of seeming like a band was playing inside your skull. On the other hand, if you like it unnatural, I know a hip hop producer who’ll gladly part you from a few hundred quid. - 111 -

wicked this way comes The McLaren 650s takes the best of the 12C, then adds more speed, improved handling and new styling to take on its Ferrari 458 rival The 650S won’t replace the 12C,” says yet another McLaren employee. I lost count of the number of times McLaren said that during the launch of this more focused, faster version of the car it launched back in 2011. The 650S is 12C intensified then, a more dramatic looking and driving version of an already wickedly quick supercar. It addresses many of the criticisms of the original, giving McLaren the car to take on Ferrari’s 458 Italia and its even more intense 458 Speciale model. Certainly, the 650S represents a welcome visual boost on the 12C; McLaren’s designer Frank Stephenson giving it a new look that takes a reverential nod to its P1 hypercar sibling. The result is impressive, the 650S is a more visually arresting car, all while being more effective at cleaving through the air, too. That’s important, as with the styling changes come a raft of technical revisions. Power has been pushed up to 650bhp, hence the name. That might only be a moderate hike in output, but combined with McLaren’s changes to the chassis and transmission

the 650S is a significantly more visceral driving machine, yet retains the 12C’s remarkably sophisticated suspension control and day-to-day usability. That is very much part of McLaren’s ethos, as more than most other supercar firms its customers tend to use their cars on a daily basis rather than as a weekend plaything. The 650S retains that, but behind the fine-riding and easy civility there’s a far more involving and rawer drive that turns the 12C into the car it should perhaps always should have been. The transformation is extraordinary, with the 650S faster than its legendary F1 relation up to 124mph, and even above that its potency is extraordinary. Add McLaren’s meticulous attention to detail, the near infinite ability to personalise – anything over the usual options is possible via McLaren’s MSO (McLaren Special Operations) – and the 650S is a far more convincing Ferrari-beater. So much so that you’d have to be mad to go for the 12C, with McLaren quietly admitting a few days later that the 650S will indeed replace it. Little wonder, it really is that good.

Heavenly Halkin

East meets West in the Belgravian boutique hotel where minimalism makes for maximum comfort and sophistication – from acclaimed food to impeccable service When it comes to a discreet boutique hotel, it doesn’t get much better than the Halkin. It’s a curious paradox – combining a traditional stucco Georgian exterior with the Asian-influenced interior that’s the hallmark of the venerable COMO group of hotels. It’s been a leading light of the London hotel scene for years, not least because of Nahm, the minimalist David Thompson-helmed restaurant that was part of its hospitality mix for many years. Today sees the similarly acclaimed Ametsa with Arzak Instruction take over restaurant duties and, while I didn’t dine there during my visit, I overheard a couple leaving the restaurant and singing the praises of its tasting menu. Personally, I simply found it ideal for a relaxing night’s stay of sophisticated luxury. From the moment you enter the reception, scented with fragrant flowers and studded with striking Eastern art and sculpture, to the fabulous rooms themselves, this hotel is a true modern classic. Our deluxe room offered plenty of space, with the aesthetic being one of beautiful wood, both hardwood veneer and black lacquer furniture. Special mention must also go to the vast bathroom, set off with a quarry full of rich marble. Gadget fiends will also be in the their element as one bedside table tablet controls every electronic operation, from the lights to the TV, iPod dock, air con and more. Better still, you don’t need a PhD in computing to operate it. The bed test (basically lying on it and seeing if you start to doze after two minutes) passed with flying colours. I also put the room service team through their paces with a fiendishly complex breakfast order for delivery and, again, it proved to be spot on. While today’s newer boutique hotels seem to be channelling a riot of colour style, The Halkin is a refreshingly oldschool, minimalist take on luxury. Subtle, intimate, stealth wealth at its best – this should be every visitor’s first choice for a stay in beautiful Belgravia. comohotels.com

how to

look good at 100

Ruben Tabares, renowned strength and conditioning coach, and nutrition expert, reveals what it takes to age gracefully ne of the most frequently asked questions I get when training celebrities and, it has to be said, women in particular is: ‘How can I look younger?’ The answer is simple, although unfortunately in today’s world we have been bombarded with too much of the wrong information. It seems that almost everybody is an expert or writing a book that promises the earth when it comes to fitness. So how do we determine what is fact and what is fiction? External beauty is a reflection of our internal health and I usually advise that we begin by looking at our internal terrain. Whatever is going on in our internal environment is ultimately reflected in how flawless, vibrant and healthy our skin is. When our cells regenerate they need the right conditions – a clean toxic-free environment, oxygen and nutrients in order to regenerate correctly.

For me, this can be best described by the work of Dr Alexis Carrel, Nobel Prize winner, who stated: “The cell is immortal, it is merely the fluid in which it floats that degenerates. Renew this fluid at regular intervals, give the cell what it requires for nutrition, and as far as we know, the pulsation of life can go on forever.” Dr Carrel kept a chicken heart cell alive for 28 years, far outliving the normal lifespan of a chicken, which is 7-12 years. The cells did not die because of ageing; rather they died as a result of the laboratory assistant forgetting to clean their external terrain. I suspect he didn’t keep his job for long after that! So in brief, what do we need to do in order to look great at 100? For cells to regenerate successfully they need three things: water, nutrients and oxygen. Water is vital for cells. I always advise that we drink three litres of fresh, clean drinking water every day, not including teas

and vegetable juices. It is prudent not to drink tap water if we are to live a long and youthful life. Our tap water contains fluoride, chlorine and heavy metals, which the water filtration system in the UK is unable to get rid of. It also contains traces of pesticides, chemicals, cement, narcotics and pharmaceuticals. The authorities state that they are in such small amounts that they barely affect us but I would argue that this, along with all of the other stresses we put on our bodies, are responsible for our premature ageing and many other related diseases. The answer is simple. Drink glass-bottled water, never plastic, and/or buy a water filter for the home. The latter is relatively inexpensive and does save an incredible amount of money compared to buying pricey bottled water. So we are now drinking more water, what else do we need to do in order to ensure youthful looking skin? Of prime importance

Ruben Tabares is one of the world’s most in-demand strength and conditioning coaches and counts athletes such as Amir Khan, David Haye, Danny Cipriani and John Terry among his clients. He is also the co-founder of PT Club, a collective of highly educated and motivated fitness professionals who can train clients in their home or gym anywhere in the world. ptclubuk.com

is reducing the number of toxins entering our bodies. Toxins cause inflammation and it is my opinion that inflammation is the major cause of disease and premature ageing. So lowering inflammation is key and we do this by not consuming foods such as sugar, processed foods and rancid fats, all of which trigger inflammatory responses within the body. It’s far better to eat organic vegetables, free range meats and employ a chemical free toiletry regime. Try to buy fluoride-free toothpaste, only use extra virgin coconut oil on your skin and avoid microwaved food at all costs. The next point to address is training. The right type of training will actually help with keeping you healthy and looking and feeling young. For this I always advise people start a mixture of strength training, high intensity training and deep tissue sports massage. Despite current fitness trends, I would advise against long distance running as this actually

speeds up the ageing process. The same applies to the crossfit style of training, as this type of exercise is highly dangerous and causes longterm damage. I would never advise any of my clients to do any form of crossfit-type training and I think the fact that I can push athletes such as David Haye and Amir Khan to the limit without them ever picking up an injury under my guidance speaks volumes about the importance of informed training choices. The fitness industry churns out these fads from time to time and unfortunately for those of us who know what we are doing we have to wait for it to run its course, and in the meantime educate as many people as possible. Given the amount of injuries that crossfit can cause, at least the world’s physiotherapists are doing well out of it! Try to stick to some of my suggestions above and I am confident that you are well on your way to living a longer, healthier and, yes, more beautiful life.

The £3,000 suit and the £10 haircut High-end barber Carmelo Guastella on the elements that go into creating a stylish haircut

When you’ve got the bespoke suit, the highend timepiece and the luxury car, why do so many men forget about another crucial aspect of their lifestyle and appearance – the haircut. I work in Mayfair and, on a daily basis, I walk past dapper gents sporting haircuts that look, frankly, terrible. For many of them, I’m sure it’s habit – always opting for the same haircut, generally a short back and sides. A problem exacerbated, no doubt, from seeing the same hairdresser, year in, year out. The truth is that not everybody’s head shape, facial features and hair type are the same, so a more stylish approach, and perhaps spending more money on a good haircut, will make all the difference. The service must match the price tag. Your stylist needs to take into account a variety of factors, including age, hair type, profession, face and head shape, in order to achieve the ideal cut. The perfect ‘designer haircut’ is a combination of using an experienced men’s hairdresser who spends time on the consultation, delivers a cut that flatters and, crucially, provides advice on how to style your hair at home. It’s all a far cry from the 10-minute haircut achieved

the

in most barbers with a pair of clippers. You can spot a clipper cut a mile away, or I can at least. You’ll notice marks left by the clippers and see that the short sides are not blended well with the hair on top; or perhaps that the hairline appears unnatural. To be honest, for most men, growing your hair a bit longer – as in the picture used to illustrate this piece – can make a massive difference to what’s achievable with a good cut. It’s all about the detail. And what of fashion trends? It’s a consideration, of course, but not at the expense of sacrificing someone’s individuality. A nod to tonsorial fashion trends is acceptable, but remember that’s the style that works best for you. Paying a premium for your perfect haircut brings with it the expectation that you will be able to adapt it to suit most situations with minimal effort, thus it should take you from work at day to evening at play. Unlike a suit – where you wear a different one for different situations – a haircut needs to be able to be easily styled in a variety of ways. So upgrade your hairdresser – I guarantee you won’t regret it.

drink

iPro sport

The drink of choice for the footballers at Derby County FC, who narrowly missed out on promotion this year, iPro Sport can take some of the credit for their success. Although manager Steve McClaren could probably claim part of that too. It is a sports drink that differentiates itself from other isotonic drinks by supplying a more suitable option for the average active person, as well as top athletes. It uses stevia – a natural sugar replacement with no calories – to sustain its sweetness, plus there are other health-benefitting ingredients such as 188% of the reference intake of B12 and 200% of the daily recommended vitamin C dosage. It tastes great, too.

Clinic Lémanic

Véronique Emmenegger, medical director of Switzerland’s Clinic Lémanic, highlights the new non-invasive methods everyone is talking about. Cryolipolysis is used to treat unsightly localised lumps and bumps – love handles, stomach, back, buttocks, arms and legs fat pads – in men and women. Cryolipolysis is a natural perocess that takes just one hour for each body zone. The treatment stems from the fact that fatty tissue is more sensitive to prolonged exposure to the cold than other parts of the body. Exposure to cold initiates a natural process of reabsorption of fat cells – the body progressively eliminates about seven billion of them. Cryolipolysis thus remodels tissue volume, producing perceptible, balanced and long-lasting improvements. We also employ the Haute Couture concept, which uses fully absorbent regeneration threads, combined with enriched autologous plasma and light therapy to produce an overall effect of tightening, structuring and smoothing on virtually any part of the body. The choice of injection technique and the direction of the threads are factors that determine the results. The addition of activated plasma and light assists the biological rejuvenation process and the biostimulation of

the

the tissues, thus triggering the natural synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. In other words, it’s a general biorejuvenation technique that restructures and tones the entire skin surface while redefining your contours. You‘ll notice an instant improvement and the results will intensify over the next three months. On the stomach, the regeneration threads produce a smoothing effect as you lose inches. On the back and buttocks, the refining aspect is dominant. On the arms and thighs you will notice improved toning, while the sculpting effect will be particularly noticeable on the calves. Cryolipolysis and Haute Couture can be used alone or together depending on the areas to be treated, the objectives to be achieved and the time available to the patient. The medical specialist will recommend the most suitable treatment for each patient.

Although it looks like the sort of thing you’d see in the lab of a mad scientist, this ingenious device can actually be found in the kitbags of top F1 drivers such as Jenson Button and his former teammate Rubens Barrichello, as well as in the super-exclusive Assawan spa at Dubai’s Burj Al Arab hotel. A customer in the UAE even had a bespoke device designed with more than 4,000 Swarovski crystals attached. In short, it works by re-energising the air you breathe – in a process similar to photosynthesis – helping to increase stamina, concentration and sports performance. In the long term, it also gives the user a better, more glowing complexion. Twenty minutes of deep breathing every day, then, is the key to a healthier, happier you. airnergy.com

PAINT IT RED When it comes to walking the red carpet, only the finest timepiece will fit the bill. Little wonder, then, that movie star Adrien Brody chose Bulgari as the brand to sport at the recent 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival. He was attending the premiere of the Zhang Yimou-directed film Gui Lai (Coming Home), the story of a man forced into marriage who flees to the US. Fittingly for such a high-profile moment, Brody opted for the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, arguably the most impressive of Bulgari’s current crop of timepieces and a watch that includes the thinnest tourbillon ever made. The perfect choice to wear with a well-cut tux.
