Message from the eDitoR
Dear Readers,
As we see the early signs of spring, with temperatures rising, 2014 brings about more positive changes in the town.
Since our last publication, the new travel interchange has opened and the arrival of Metrolink into the town centre gets closer by the day.
The tram’s arrival also sees the departure from the skyline of the famous black box municipal building built in the late seventies. This will all be part of the town centre regeneration which includes the ambitious plans to reopen up the River Roch (more on page 6)
If you drive up Halifax Road in the Littleborough direction you will not be able to miss the very colourful community fire station which has shot up very quickly and if you pop into Rochdale town centre, make sure you check out Marks & Spencer’s £500,000 revamp.
It looks like an exciting year with the Tour De France passing through Rochdale on Sunday 6th July and the Literature & Ideas Festival repeating last year’s success on 24th – 26th October.
2014 also marks ten years of Rochdale Style Magazine, which certainly has seen major changes both locally in the town and with the national economy. It has been tough to keep your free family-run publication going through such difficult economical times, so we must offer our sincere thanks to the local businesses who have supported us from day one.
We are planning to celebrate our tenth birthday with a Charity Winter Ball on the 13th December inside our majestic town hall. If you would like to celebrate with us, plus a few celebrity guests, then please get in touch with me (colin@rochdalestyle.com) and I will keep your details for when ticket prices have been fixed.
As many of our avid readers will notice, the Link4Life Preview 8-page What’s On guide is missing from this edition. Unfortunately Link4Life have decided to stop printing this events guide within Style (please see page 21). If you would like to see Preview included within Style once again, please let us know and we’ll be sure to pass on your comments.
This edition includes exclusive celebrity interviews with Coronation Street newcomer Hayley Tamaddon, Red Dwarf’s Danny John Jules and BBC Radio Lancashire’s Alison Butterworth. There’s also a bumper wedding special and a Good Food Guide, plus all the usual features including motoring, gardening, fashion, beauty, competitions, community events and much more. I hope you enjoy this edition,

STYLE EXCLUSIVE CORONATION STREET & DANCING ON ICE STAR
HAYLEY TAMADDON
Northern lass Hayley Tamaddon first hit our screens back in 2005 when she portrayed Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale. Her numerous other television credits include Shameless, Where The Heart Is, The Royal and Waterloo Road.

www.rochdalestyle.com
Hayley was crowned champion of ITV’s fifth series of Dancing on Ice, where she skated with professional skater and childhood friend Daniel Whiston, competing over twelve weeks in front of a staggering ten million viewers.
Which of your co-stars are you closest to? Simon and Craig as I work with them the most. Such funny lads. But I also have two fab dressing room buddies... Krissi (Jenna) and Patti (Mary)!
You’ve had an incredibly busy start to 2014 and you’re now taking part in the national tour of Dancing on Ice whilst filming Corrie… how are you juggling it all? Not sure how I'm doing it to be honest! With the help of my fab agents, the Corrie cast coordinator and the Dancing on Ice producers... they're so helpful. I'm shattered but I wouldn't
she returned to the ice for this year’s ‘all star’ series where she finished runner-up, and is currently on a nationwide Dancing on ice arena tour, alongside torvill and Dean.
on top of her skating duties, Hayley has recently stepped back into soapland as steve Mcdonald’s new love interest (and Michelle’s enemy!), andrea Beckett in Coronation street.
style caught up with Hayley to find out how she’s juggling life on the cobbles and the ice!
How did you first get into acting? I started very young going to drama school. Then I went to Laine Theatre Arts when I was 16… it's all I ever wanted to do.
Were you surprised to land the part of Andrea in Coronation Street? Yes! I really didn't think they would choose me, and especially after we told them I had already accepted Dancing on Ice! But they were brilliant and said I could do both.
Were you a Corrie fan before you joined the cast?
Yes I've watched it all my life! And always
change it for the world. I'm so lucky to be doing two amazing jobs!
Flirty, feisty, and funny.
Was it strange being back on the ice again after more than three years out? Yes it terrified me! But I've got my confidence back now… well... almost!!
Have you had a good reaction from the public so far? Really good! The public support I've received for both Corrie and Dancing on Ice has been mind blowing. I'm so grateful and lucky.
What advice would you give to young aspiring actors? Never give up. Work hard to achieve your dreams and always take criticism by people who know better. It will make you stronger.
wanted to be in it as well!
Describe Andrea in three words... We’ve heard that she might not be as nice as she seems? You'll have to wait and see!! Haha!
Any exciting storylines coming up? Oh yes lots of funny stuff and some emotional stuff too!
Is the Coronation Street set a fun place to work? It's brilliant! Everyone's lovely and I'm very lucky to be working with Simon Gregson (Steve) and Craig Charles (Lloyd).
Do you prefer stage or screen? Or the ice rink?! Haha! All of them!!
What would be your dream role? I'd love to be in a film. Or Downton Abbey! But to be honest I'm just happy to be working! Ruth Meredith

PLANS UNDERWAY TO UNCOVER HIDDEN MEDIEVAL GEM Artist impressions show how Rochdale Town Centre will look once the River Roch has been uncovered. Manchester architects BDP have won the design competition to uncover the river and work on the £4.2m project – which will transform The Butts – is set to get under way later this year. The exciting pictures show how three sections of the river will be opened up, exposing a medieval bridge, which has been hidden from view for more than a century. Glass viewing platforms will jut out over the water and large areas of greenery will also be planted.
Rochdale council leader Colin Lambert said: “The transformation of the public realm on and around The Butts will enhance the river reopening which is an incredibly exciting project and a critical part of our regeneration plans.”
The council is putting around £2.5m into the project with the Environment Agency pledging another £540,000.
A second stage bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the remainder of the money has been submitted with the council expecting the results in the summer. Work is then expected to last about 30 weeks - meaning it could be finished by the end of the year.
The River Roch runs through a culvert in the heart of the town centre. The culvert is made up of 12 different phases, most of which are 20th century infill structures that join together earlier bridges.
Councillor Peter Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This part of the town has a rich heritage with some of the finest buildings in the UK, including our fantastic town hall. The river and Rochdale Bridge have been hidden for over a century, in fact many people won’t even have realised that they exist. Re-opening the river here is another huge step in Rochdale’s regeneration.”
Once completed Rochdale will be the only town in Greater Manchester to benefit from an open river running through the heart of its town centre. River plants and foliage will be introduced to support natural ecological and biodiversity developments creating a perfect haven for wildlife and insects. The River Roch wildlife corridor support species such as the dipper, kingfisher, pipistrelle bats, water crowfoot and otters. Opening up the river has the potential to allow these animals and birds to be more frequently seen in the town centre. 6

DANNY JOHN JULES is a popular British actor, singer and dancer. He is best known for playing The Cat in Red Dwarf. More recently he has appeared in the BBC One series Death in Paradise as policeman Dwayne Myers.
TOBY PHILPOTT is an English puppeteer best known for his work in motion picture animatronics during the 1980s in such films as The Dark Crystal and Return of the Jedi. He operated the left arm, head and tongue of Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi.
SCI-FI LOVERS MEET STARS AT ROCHDALE CONVENTION Sci-fi lovers descended on Rochdale at the end of February for Dale Con 2 - the biggest sci-fi convention outside of Manchester and London.
BRIAN WHEELER appeared in Return of the Jedi (as an Ewok & a Jawa) in 1983, four of the Harry Potter films, Phantom of the Opera and Stag Night of the Dead.
RON HONE is known for his work on Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), as chief droid builder and model maker. His extensive special effect credits also include Prometheus, Robin Hood, Pearl Harbour, Princess Bride and Shaun of the Dead.
Red Dwarf star Danny John-Jules, who played The Cat, headlined the convention, which also featured Alan Flyng who appeared as a starship officer in Return of the Jedi. Christopher Muncke, Pam Rose, Brian Wheeler, Ron Hone, Anthony Forrest and Toby Philpott also chatted to fans and signed autographs for the excited crowd. Dale-Con 2 is a free convention held by The Wheatsheaf shopping Centre. Alongside the actors fans also had the chance to meet daleks, Darth Vader, C3PO and R2D2.
PAM ROSE is an English-born actress who portrayed Leesub Sirln, an alien in Chalmun's Cantina in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). The Star Wars veteran has attended many scifi conventions where she has 'enjoyed meeting both fans and old friends from the industry'.
ANTHONY FORREST played the part of the sandtrooper dazed by Obi-Wan Kenobi at the Mos Eisley roadblock who said". These aren't the droids we're looking for". Forrest has acted in over fifty films including The Spy Who Loved Me, Riders of the Storm and The Eagle Has Landed.
CHRISTOPHER MUNCKE played Captain Khurgee, the scanning crew leader and pilot, in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. He also appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me alongside fellow Star Wars actors Anthony Forrest and Garrick Hagon.

STYLE EXCLUSIVE
DANNY JOHN JULES Headlining Rochdale’s only Sci-Fi convention in February was popular actor, singer and dancer Danny John Jules. Best known as ‘The Cat’ from sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, Danny has starred in all ten series of the epic show. He’s also been back on our screens recently, starring alongside Ben Miller, Sara Martins and Kris Marshall in BBC One crime comedydrama, Death in Paradise. Danny portrays policeman Dwayne Myers in the top-rated series, filmed on the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe.
Other television credits include The Bill, The 12
www.rochdalestyle.com
Tomorrow People, The Demon Headmaster, Maid Marian and her Merry Men, Doctors, The Crouches and the Red Dwarf 3 part special in 2009.
The multi-talented star also has many West End theatre credits to his name including Barnum at the London Palladium, Cats at the New London Theatre and Time at the
Dominion Theatre. He created the role of 'Rocky 1' in Starlight Express at the Apollo Victoria, and was 'Dink' in the first West End production of Carmen Jones at the Old Vic Theatre.
Style caught up with Danny to discuss playing ‘The Cat’, filming in the Caribbean and why he loves meeting Red Dwarf fans…
Danny stars in BBC series Death in Paradise
When did you first start performing?
I think I was performing from the moment I was born because I was crying musical scales all the way to the ward, apparently.
My first performance was a crime prevention film called 'Seven Green Bottles' when I was 14. You can watch it on YouTube!
What's your favourite memory from Red Dwarf?
My favourite memory has to be my audition. I was 30 minutes late unbeknown to me. I made no apologies, did my audition and whilst being hurried out of the door I was told the horrible truth. I was the first person to audition and I still got the job. A miracle.
Is it true that series 11 of Red Dwarf might be on the horizon?
Red Dwarf 11 is being written as I speak and will be made in November. This year is the 26th anniversary of the first Red Dwarf.
Did you enjoy meeting fans at the recent Dale-Con?
Yes. I enjoy meeting fans all over the world. If you are entertaining people in the media, you should be available for them to meet you in the flesh. It's those people who are 'keeping you in pants'! I see it as a musician doing a live concert.
What is the most memorable fan mail you've ever received?
Various terminally ill people who have told me that Red Dwarf is their only joy. One guy said that when he was under morphine after a brain op he kept hallucinating the Red Dwarf cast walking past his room.
What has been the highlight of your career up to now?
The highlight of my career thus far was starring in a show called Soul Train in the West End. Singing, dancing, acting and comedy all on stage live; a huge challenge and one that I will cherish.
What would be your dream job?
My dream job would be to play Richard Pryor. He was a big influence playing The Cat.
You're an actor, singer and dancer - but if you had to choose just one, which would it be?
I couldn't choose from the three. Doing them together is the biggest buzz. I'm an entertainer - I do whatever it takes to entertain.
What are you up to at the moment?
I had a motorbike documentary on the Community Channel (Sky) on 19th March but you can look it up on BBC iPlayer.
I will be filming a new Death In Paradise series in the summer and finishing my short film 'BUCKY'. Why do you think the Death In Paradise series boasts consistently high ratings?
People love escapism. We always want what 'the other guy has'. Death In Paradise is a life we are told is exotic. It's for dreamers. It takes away the focus usually reserved for all your stresses in life.
Are there any downsides to filming on a Caribbean island?
Of course. I have two small kids who have missed me for what will be the fourth summer of their short existence. My boy is eight and my girl is six. Do you watch yourself on television?
I watch it once with the rest of the country and then I leave it alone.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors/performers?
Seriously. Unless you can't live without it... Stay Away From Showbiz!!
Ruth Meredith
PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOHN COOKE
FILMING IN ROCHDALE When we think of the film industry we perhaps see images of glitz and glamour. We imagine red carpets, glamorous actresses, handsome actors, screaming crowds and hordes of photographers.
That might be true of Hollywood and the major film industries but for independent film makers making what one them recently described as a ‘no budget movie’ those are scenes unlikely to be replicated. However, Rochdale based John Farrington, owner of Leaky Shed Films tells us that there was a real sense of purpose and pride in the making of the film And She Cried, filmed on location in Rochdale.
“And She Cried is a short film addressing the issues raised by the murder a few years ago of Sophie Lancaster,” John told Style magazine in an exclusive interview. “We have been in touch with the Sophie Lancaster foundation, through which Sophie’s mum and so many volunteers work tirelessly to create tolerance of individuality. the film is not in any way the story of Sophie Lancaster or of her death, but it addresses issues raised about a murder that many consider to have been a hate-crime.”
John then went on to explain how it was possible to deliver what he insists was genuinely a ‘no budget’ project.
“We advertised in appropriate outlets for postgraduate cast and crew willing to work for no fee to produce what we already knew would be an important film,” John told us. “In our wildest dreams, though, we never expected those who did step forward to show such generosity of spirit. Lighting, sound and camera persons not only joined us but brought
14
www.rochdalestyle.com
with them their own equipment. that in itself was fantastic, but they also really knew how to use that equipment and the production values of the film are very high. So, too, were the performance values. We were really lucky to be able to cast each role and have achieved some memorable performances.”
With the film to be shown in schools and universities and community groups to generate debate around the issues raised it all sounds very worthy but a long way removed from the bright lights and glitz described at the opening of this feature.
“of course, it isn’t hollywood,” John admitted. “however, there are connections in that many of the movers and shakers in the commercial film world lent us really expensive equipment, and we were even able to throw a thank you ‘wrap’ party, for local businesses, at Panalux, a Lancashire studio that is part of an international organisation.”
John then went on to tell us how Rochdale businesses have come to have their names in the film’s closing credits. As the music plays to a fade at the end viewers will see the names of all across the arts, The Baum, The Reed, The Horse And Farrier, The Bean café and The
Broadfield Hotel, without whom the late-night filming would not have been as comfortable.
“Between them, those businesses kept our cast and crew fed and sheltered,” John explained.
And the glitz and the glamour?
“We had a fantastic event at Panalux on completion,” John told us. “all across the arts, another rochdale company, helped us deliver a screening and a really professional question and answer session for invited supporters and their guests. the champagne was orange juice, the caviar was cheese and biscuits and the role of martin Scorcese was played by John farrington, but we are confident we have delivered a film rochdale can be proud of.”

ROCHDALE PREPARES TO WELCOME WORLD’S ELITE With just months to go before the Tour de France comes to Rochdale, planning for the world’s biggest free sporting event is well underway. The borough is preparing for an influx of tourists for the largest free sporting event on Sunday 6th July. Around a kilometre of the route passes into Rochdale – along a section of B6138 and the A58 adjacent to Blackstone Edge Reservoir. The route includes a sharp bend which will slow the tour down and maximise viewing opportunities. Thousands of spectators are expected and it will take well over an hour for the racing cyclists, support teams and media to pass through. Council Leader Colin Lambert said it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase an amazing area to people all over the world: “We are expecting thousands to line the route by Blackstone Edge and for local businesses it’s a great opportunity. Littleborough will become one of the main gateways into the event and the volume of spectators will create a huge opportunity for businesses and attractions following the race so it is important we capitalise on this and ensure racegoers are aware of what’s on and encouraged to stay, and also return in the future.” A series of events are being planned in and around Littleborough, building up to the big day - the weekend before, the day itself, and the weekend following the Tour de France. These include a Triathlon Challenge, a two day Littleborough Festival, Farmers Market, numerous cycling inspired events including a Tour of Rochdale, a School Sports Challenge and the annual Rush Bearing Festival. There are plans to hold a concert in Littleborough on the Friday before the race and
16
www.rochdalestyle.com
to show the cycling action plus World Cup football on a big screen in Harehill Park. Link4Life’s popular ‘Big Games’ events will also return with a cycling theme and arrangements are being made for the official Tour de France Grand Départ trophy to visit the borough this spring. John Kay, Chairman of Pennine Business and Tourism Forum in partnership with Pennine Prospects, said: "The Tour de France really is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It's the world's largest annual sports event, it’s entirely free for spectators and it’s on our doorstep! We hope that as many people as possible, local residents as well as visitors and businesses, really enjoy the Tour de France … and it is our intention to do all we can to make that the case." Although only 1km of the race is in Rochdale, the stretch is recognised as being one of the most fascinating sections of the route and is the culmination of the longest continuous hill climb in England. ROCHDALE PIONEERS MUSEUM The Toad Lane premises, where the Rochdale Pioneers set up their cooperative grocery store on 21 December 1844, is well-known around the world. Now, an unusual tribute to the iconic building has been revealed. Head of Heritage Resources at the Co-operative Heritage Trust, Gillian Lonergan, has painstakingly recreated the Pioneers’ famous store, complete with the famous Co-operative Tea advert on the side. Working in minute detail, she has replaced bricks and mortar with coloured wool and stitches. Gillian’s knitted tribute to the building was finally unveiled recently after several months of stopping and starting and returning to the museum to take photos of each wall, which were then transferred into a knitting pattern via graph paper. Knitting the building was a long process, and one which Gillian says “kept my husband entertained for a few months!”. Gillian started with the tea advertisement, she explains, because: “How you could recreate the tea advert in knitting is something which has always intrigued me. I have knitted lots of images and patterns before and the tea advertisement is a lovely image.”
Coming from a family of knitters, Gillian has been knitting since she was ten, but she took it up with particular enthusiasm when she was a teenager and has always carried knitting around with her. “It’s creative and it’s something you can pick up and do. You can spend hours or just a few minutes doing it, and it’s something you can do wherever you are or in front of the TV,” she explains,
20
www.rochdalestyle.com
adding. “I like to have a challenge and I like to knit things which are different and not too simple.”
The Toad Lane store is the latest in a series of Gillian’s knitting projects, but it is her first building and the inspiration came from the unlikeliest of places: a tardis! Gillian explains: “I knitted a tardis a few years ago and realised there isn’t that much difference between a tardis and a building!”
Although she likes making things, Gillian admits that she doesn’t really think about what she will do with them afterwards. It’s hoped, however, that the knitted Pioneers store will now become a permanent fixture at the museum. “It’s quite large and very squishy, so it might be an addition to the museum’s resources,” she explains. “I imagine there will be a lot of bouncing about on it!”
You can visit the Museum and view Gillian’s creation during museum opening hours which are Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 5pm.
EXCELLENT QUALITY EXPERIENCE’ OFFERED BY PIONEERS MUSEUM
The Pioneers museum was recently assessed by VisitEngland’s Quality Assurance Scheme (VAQAS) and credited for its efficiency and the one-to-one personal welcome given to each visitor. Chris De Vere of VisitEngland commented: “The Rochdale Pioneers Museum offered the visitor an overall excellent quality experience. This is one of the gems of Rochdale and Greater Manchester. It deserves much greater awareness. The Rochdale Pioneers Museum fully merits the award of VisitEngland’s accreditation of ‘Quality Assured Visitor Attraction.”
Jenny Mabbott, Manager of the Museum stated: “We are very pleased that VisitEngland has recognised the quality of visit offered by the team at the Rochdale Pioneers Museum. The museum reopened in October 2012 following an extensive HLF refurbishment and during that time we have welcomed over 13,000 visitors from across the globe. We will build on this excellent assessment and continue to provide and develop engaging visitor experiences during the year ahead.”

Alison Butterworth STYLE EXCLUSIVE BBC RADIO LANCASHIRE’S
Style Editor Colin Meredith was recently invited onto Alison Butterworth’s late show to chat about Style Magazine and promoting the positives in Rochdale. Whilst he was there he asked Alison a few questions about her interesting and varied career… What was your first ever job over the airways?
I can't really recall, it seems that long ago -
about 26yrs or more - but my first bit of live radio
was for BBC Radio Manchester, when I was sent to Albert Square to report on a demo by a white

Do you prefer presenting to producing?
I've spent most of my time with the BBC

I'd really love a crack at presenting. I'd just spent

What qualities do you need to be successful
on radio? Particularly live shows with callers?
Big ears, a big nose - and enough sense to keep

Any advice for budding radio presenters out

If you want to do it - keep knocking on doors.
I road tested a she-wee device and every tabloid

TROY SWANICK THE UK’S YOUNGEST BLACK BELT Troy Swanick of Kaizen-Do Karate Black Belt Academy in Rochdale is officially the UK’s youngest person to achieve a Black Belt in Shukokai Karate. Troy was just 7 years and 11 months old when, after three years of hard training under Sensei Dervish, he achieved his number one goal… the Black Belt!
Since achieving his Black Belt, Troy has become something of a celebrity, as people realise just what an achievement this is at such a young age. He, along with the Academy, has been on Granada Reports and featured in two national newspapers; The Sun and The Star. Troy has also enrolled onto the Academy’s Junior Instructor Program where he now helps teach the younger students. Setting himself future goals, when interviewed by Paul Crone on Granada Reports, Troy commented: “I would like to be a Grand Master and win five gold medals at the Olympics”. The youngster’s dedication, perseverance, and loyalty to his craft are the main reasons he has achieved the Black Belt at such a young age, along with the support of his proud parents
Paul and Venecia, who take him to training 3-5 days a week, for 1-2 hours at a time. Sensei Dervish, the Chief Instructor of Kaizen-Do Karate, said: “Troy is one of hundreds of beginners who enrolled as a white belt but he is one of the few who served the test of time and showed true effort and discipline throughout. Troy has always put 100% effort into his classes, he never messes around and always listens to his instructors - these are the main reasons why he has achieved such a high grade at a young age”. The Rochdale Academy has a reputation of only awarding Black Belts to students who truly deserve them, with each student having to take part in a gruelling three and a half hour grading, demonstrating all the techniques they have learned over the years. Sensei
Dervish commented that ‘the grading is a test of physical ability but also mental concentration and focus; our Academy really emphasises skills such as concentration, focus and discipline, all skills that are needed throughout life’. Troy is a pupil at Healey Primary School - who have supported and celebrated his success - where he also enjoys activities such as Judo, fitness fun and learning the guitar. The multi-talented youngster also has a passion for drama and has been a member of Starstruck Theatre school & agency and he recently performed in Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society’s show "When The Lights Go On Again", at the Gracie Fields Theatre. He will also be performing in Annie with Starstruck on 17th May at the Riverside, Whitworth.
Style would like to congratulate Troy on his huge achievement and also Kaizen-Do Karate on their success – it’s certainly a sign of good things to come for the Rochdale Academy, who continue to go from strength to strength, while celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Anybody wanting to book a free taster class or find out more information on the award winning academy can visit the website www.kaizendokarate.com or call 0800 0855 099 / 07739 746 836. 26

A WALK INTO ROCHDALE'S PAST The Walk, in Rochdale Town Centre, was built as a prestigious row of shops by the Vavasour family around 1824 when they were in residence opposite (now the closed Lloyds bank building). They built it as a walkway to the River Roch, sometimes known as lovers walk as young couples used to do their courting along the river in the town centre. There are plans to have a bridge across the river from the end of the walk when the river is re-opened, hopefully later this year. If you look above the shops along The Walk you will see four shields erected in 1987 of once famous Rochdale families. The shields of the Royds, the Byrons, the Vavasours and the Kemps and are fixed to Victorian wrought iron lamp holders at each end of The Walk. Kelsall and Kemp's woollen mills once stretched from The Butts along Smith Street. The Royds started its own bank on The Butts. Legend has it that Lord Byron, the poet, visited the Manor House near the town centre, and John Vavasour built the block which now forms The Walk. These days The Walk is home to a range of diverse shops and businesses, a few of whom are featured in the next couple of pages.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
NORMALLY IN THIS FEATURE, WE PICK OUT THE BEST OF A CERTAIN GENRE OF CARS BUT 2014 MARKS THE 40TH BIRTHDAY OF THE VOLKWAGEN GOLF AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY NEEDS CELEBRATING. IT’S BECOME A MOTORING ICON AND AS A SIDELINE PRODUCED SOME OF THE BEST TV ADVERTS OF THE PAST, WHO DOESN’T REMEMBER A MK3 GOLF DISAPPEARING INTO THE DISTANCE WITH A ‘JUST DIVORCED’ SIGN HUNG ON ITS BACK WITH TWO OLD LADIES AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD LOOKING GOB-SMACKED!
A few years ago, I was invited to drive an original Golf, which had been mothballed and lovingly cared for as part of VW’s press fleet. This particular car was built in 1982 and in the subsequent 25 years has only covered 38,000 miles. This gave a great insight into what the car was like to drive when it was new. And what was it like? Let’s say scary! When I was handed the keys to this mothballed classic, I was told to be wary of the brakes. “Are they a bit keen?” I enquired, “You’ll see” said the nice man from VW with a wry grin. As I left the car park, I discovered what all the joviality was all about. As I reached the junction with the main road, I applied a little pressure to the brake pedal, nothing occurred. I pushed quite hard on the brake pedal, the car if anything, seemed to be going faster. I applied my full body weight to the brake pedal, a slight decrease in velocity occurred. After what seemed to be a short eon, the car finally stopped. This is when the next problem became apparent, the steering. Now it is no coincidence whatsoever that there has been an explosion in the number of gyms and an increase in obesity in this country since power steering became the norm on most cars. This old Golf is by no means a heavy car but by 34

the time I had turned it onto the main road, I was bathed in sweat. Out on the open roads, the fun factor kicked in, this was a raw experience, no nanny-state computer controlling the throttle or any electronic stability devices to keep things neat through the corners. All that was involved was the raw processing power of my right foot. The thought then occurred that this 25 year old car has no real safety devices either. No airbags, no crumple zones, no side impact protection, nothing! If there is a sheep around the next blind bend, we are both goners. To then step into the brand new seventh generation Golf, with traction control, stability aids and a whole host of other electronic wizardry was like walking through a portal into another world. To make a fair comparison I pounded the same roads and it was a completely different experience, the new car
felt much more agile and compliant than its ancestor. It turned in much more willingly and gripped with much more confidence. Of course, comparing it to a thirty year old car is much like comparing the Mallard to a Eurostar, but even when measured against its competitors it still behaves like the market leader and fulfils the expectations that goes with this mantle. Inside it is nice to see VW moving away from their minimalist period with a visually pleasing dashboard and intuitively laid out controls. As a nod back to its lineage, the forthcoming GTI model will even have checked seat inserts which will pay homage to the original. Of course, there are cheaper rivals these days to the Golf which look as good and perform the same tasks, but then, the same could be said of pâté and potted meat! Mark D’Apice

GARDENING WITH MICHELLE Welcome to Spring. The warm spring temperatures fuel our passion to get outside and make a start in the garden but beware late spring frosts can take us by surprise until mid or even late May. So where do we start this year? My advice firstly is don’t rush into planting summer bedding outside just yet. The large chains offer us such tempting buys far too early, emerging from hot greenhouses and not quite ready for the shock of our spring temperature outside. I have visitors to the garden centre every year that comment on their summer baskets and bedding plants not making it past July when they should continue blooming up until October or the first winter frosts. Plant them out late May, early June onwards and reap the rewards of waiting. Make the most of inexpensive spring bulbs, primroses, pansies and viola which will provide weeks of cheerful colour to your borders, baskets and containers. Wherever you choose to purchase your plants look for good friendly advice and information as to when it’s safe for planting out and what conditions they require. Spring has so much to offer and is my personal favourite with bursts of fresh buds and glimmering shades of green changing every day. Remember we have four seasons and each one produces its own little miracles. March and April usually provide us with sunny days, which makes it a great time to get busy preparing beds, sowing seeds, cutting back winter shrubs and giving the garden and patio a good tidy up. Make a plan of what you would like to achieve this year - maybe you fancy having a go at growing your own fruit and veg, which has been very popular the last couple of years. Start off with simple produce like tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, strawberries and enjoy the challenge.
JOBS FOR EARLY TO MID SPRING Clear away weeds, mulch beds and borders Prune hedges, fruit trees and roses Sow hardy veg outside Clean the pond Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials Replace compost in containers Remove frost damaged shoots from evergreens Plant summer bulbs Apply a general purpose fertiliser to beds, trees and shrubs LAWNS If the weather isn’t too wet, start with a light cut on the lawn, apply a high nitrogen fertiliser and mosskiller if required. If you have bare patches that need repairing wait until late April to apply lawn seed for best results. KIDDIES’ CORNER Why not get the children interested and involved at an early age. A sensory or butterfly garden introduces them to the wonders of nature. Inspire them to grow quick and easy plants such as strawberries which ensures a successful experience and a very tasty reward. I hope my tips help you enjoy your spring garden - check out my blog page on the website which is updated as the season progresses and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and advice in the summer issue.

TOP TEN FASHION TRENDS: SPRING/SUMMER 2014 WORDS… Wear your thoughts on your sleeve with logo tees and shouty slogans. Steer clear of head-to-toe lettering and opt for a single, subtle message. The ATHLETIC trend is packed with old-school attitude. Look for classic touches - plimsolls, racer backs, gym shorts, go-faster stripes and accessorise cleverly with elastic belts, legwarmers, football socks, sun visors and zip-up trainers to inject sports-day spirit.
PRIMARY BRIGHTS… Colour block or clash the trend to suit your mood… or try multicolour rainbow creations!

DENIM gets a spring clean this season. Stonewash, sun-bleached, true blue and distressed: any wash will work this year. Think super-sized turn-ups, shredded cuffs, ripped waistbands, plaited denim and classic white tees. www.rochdalestyle.com

Nail Myths Busted
Do you remember when you were little and your mum used to tell you that if you ate carrots you’d be able to see in the dark? We all got pretty excited to gain that particular super power, so we wolfed down our carrots… until we quickly realised that it was all a lie! Well, there are a million and one myths just like that one, but about your nails. So here are a few common nail myths busted… some might even surprise you!
‘NAILS NEED TO BREATHE’ Once your nail has grown it’s no longer alive, so it doesn’t need to ‘breathe’. As long as your nail tech is using high quality products and applying them correctly, there is absolutely no reason to remove your enhancements. In fact, it should be avoided! Whether you keep your acrylic nails on for 3 weeks or 30 years, the damage to your nail underneath will be exactly the same! Even if you don’t have enhancements, keeping a treatment based polish on your nails is just like moisturising your face or conditioning your hair - it will protect and nurture your nail.
‘WHITE SPOTS = LACK OF CALCIUM’ White spots on your nails are very common and completely harmless - they are most likely a sign of slight trauma to your nail, not calcium deficiency. You will usually find that children get a lot more white spots on their nails than adults.
‘GELATIN MAKES YOUR NAILS HEALTHY’ Your nails are actually made from keratin, not gelatin! Putting gelatin on your nails will not affect them at all. This idea was originally thought of by a jelly manufacturer who came up with this theory due to the fact gelatin contains bones, skin and hooves. If you want to use a treatment on your nails, I would recommend Mavaflex Nail Serum by Mavala, which moisturises and strengthens your nails.
‘GEL IS BETTER THAN ACRYLIC’ If anything, gel is worse! Hard gel can’t be removed with acetone, unlike acrylic. This means it has to be filed off rather than soaked, causing much more damage to your nails. If you want long lasting nails without damaging your own, try a gel polish such as Gelish by Nail Harmony.
‘WATER MANICURES ARE GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN’ Surprisingly, your skins and nails actually get more dehydrated the more water they are exposed to. The best manicure to have if you want nourishment is a paraffin wax manicure. This silky, warm wax is
applied to your hands and nails to help lock in hydration, and it even eases arthritis pain!
‘STORING NAIL POLISH IN THE FRIDGE MAKES IT LAST LONGER’ There’s nothing worse than your polish going thick and gloopy when there’s still half a bottle left! But as handy as this little trick would be, unfortunately it’s not true. The best way of keeping your nail polishes in good shape is to make sure you screw the lid on extra tight after each use – it’s exposure to air that causes it to thicken!
‘PUTTING WET NAILS IN ICE COLD WATER MAKES THEM DRY FASTER’ Your nail polish dries when the chemicals in it evaporate. Therefore plunging them into any water, even ice-cold water, will just prolong the drying process! The best way of getting your polish to dry faster is to use a drying treatment, such as Mavala’s Oil Seal Dryer, or CND’s speed spray. Even just putting normal cuticle oil over your fresh polish will help prevent smudging, because if you catch them on anything it will smudge the oil rather than a coat of your polish!

LOCAL TALENT ON DISPLAY Number Ten Gallery, on Baillie Street, is now in its sixth successful year of business and is the place to go in Rochdale for quality greeting cards, gifts and artwork. They offer an excellent range of greetings cards produced by small publishers or local artists - and if they don't have the exact card you want, with a little notice, it could be specially made for you.
You can leave a deposit on any artwork and pay in instalments if you wish, in order to secure the perfect gift.
Number Ten's varied selection of gifts is carefully sourced from crafts people both locally and further afield to offer you a choice in wood, glass, ceramics, jewellery and textiles - many are oneoff pieces. There is always a variety of artists' work on show in the shop. In addition to this, they have gallery space where you can visit an exhibition usually preceded by a great preview evening.
Colin Meredith from Rochdale Ghost Walks was recently invited to be the model for the Wednesday artists' group in February. He took home a picture drawn by talented local artist Terry McMahon. If you're a local artist or photographer you could host your own exhibition. Or why not attend one of the Gallery's workshops where you can meet like-minded people and learn new skills.

FROM MAYOR TO MARRIOTT; HOW ROBIN PARKER MOVED FROM THE POLITIC TO THE POETIC Robin Parker’s new book of twelve ‘biblical’ poetic anecdotes entitled Edenfield Scrolls has gone down well both in the borough and elsewhere in Lancashire. We asked him if he was surprised at its success. “I feel probably more vindicated than surprised”, replied Robin. “I knew that there would be a lot of people who had a nostalgic memory of Stanley Holloway’s monologues, particularly The Lion and Albert. I picked on his rendition of Marriott Edgar’s Three Ha’pence a foot, which has the hilarious but ludicrous story of Noah coming to Bury to buy maple for his bunk bed in the ark. I just decided that if that Bible story could have an impossible Lancastrian treatment, then so could others.” “The obvious start would be at the beginning and therefore the link of the Garden of Eden to Edenfield just jumped out at me. I thought, if I can do one, I can do more and so, as an allegory of the Dead Sea Scrolls, I invented a chest of Scrolls being hidden in Edenfield. I then called to mind Jericho between Bury and Rochdale and the second one, The Curse of Josh Ewer, was on its way.” HOW DID HE, AS A LONDONER, MANAGE

restaurant. Whether he dines at the French or L'enclume it is sure to be a gastronomic experience he will never forget. Now in its sixth year, the event allows the chefs to demonstrate techniques and skills in a competitive environment, which they do not usually enter into during their usual working hours, in the various restaurants the group owns and operates in Rochdale and Huddersfield.
Managing Director Max Brierley said: “It was a very close competition, and I am very pleased for Brendan, and very proud of the work all the finalists produced.” He added, “We love holding Cuisine Supreme and we are very thankful to our suppliers who sponsor the event, without whom we simply could not hold the competition.”
Be the difference Adopt with Rochdale Could you be the difference in a child’s life? Could they be the difference in yours? If you are thinking about adopting but you’re not sure about what’s involved or how to begin, we can help you take the first step towards the family you’ve always wanted. There are around 25 children in Rochdale that are waiting for families to give them the chance of a better life. Their birth families may have been unable to look after them for a number of reasons, but all of the children have suffered from some form of disruption in their lives. They need a safe, loving home and a family that can give them the stability and happiness that all children deserve. If you are over 21 and have a spare bedroom, you can apply to adopt. Some of the children that most need homes include those with extra needs, sibling groups, older children, children of mixed race backgrounds or those with a disability.
Catherine’s Story: Five years ago, the lives of Catherine and James, both aged 47, changed forever when they adopted with Rochdale Borough Council. Catherine says: “My husband and I decided to adopt after I found I was no longer able to have children naturally. It’s a rigorous process; the adoption team have to assess your strengths, how you cope with pressure and what your support network is like. They provided us with intensive training and our social worker visited us at home to talk through our own thoughts on parenting and the type of child we were hoping to adopt. “It’s really important that these things are considered for the sake of the child you’re adopting – they need stability more than anything – and we always felt that it was being done fairly. “We spoke a lot with parents who had already gone through the process and adopted themselves; it helped us talk through any questions we had and get a good understanding of the necessary levels of energy, patience and persistence we would need. “Once we got to the final stage of approval, the adoption panel, our social worker
advocated for us, answering questions on our behalf before we spoke to the panel ourselves. I won’t lie; we had invested so much in the journey that we were petrified of the outcome. We were overjoyed when we were told we’d been approved. “We adopted a wonderful two-year-old little girl called Rachael who had been in foster care since she was five months old. “My job involves working very closely with children, which means I generally have a firm grasp on their behaviour and the reasons behind it. “This certainly helped me to attune myself to Rachael and understand and adjust to her actions. We instilled a routine and kept things simple. James and I spent a lot of time helping her to express herself and see us as a source of love and support. “Our social worker was great – she would come and help me peg out the washing while we talked through the basics of how things were going and any difficulties we

might be having. It was very easy to talk things over with someone who clearly also had Rachael’s best interests at heart; she would notice and praise the good things we were doing and offer advice if we needed it. “We received regular visits for the first year, all the way up to the adoption order from the court. Now, five years later, I still go to an adoption support group, where I can talk openly about any issues, fears or worries that any normal parent goes through. The group is fantastic for helping you problem-solve, take advice and get perspective on any part of being an adoptive parent. “Looking back over the last five years, there will never be a more rewarding journey than the one James and I have taken with Rachael. We have seen her develop into a beautiful, happy, healthy little girl and we continue to be so thrilled when she comes for a cuddle, tells us she loves us, gives us a beaming smile. It’s moments like those that make our hearts flip with joy and love for her.”

21 SUCCESSFUL YEARS OF DRAMA WORKSHOPS IN ROCHDALE
HOW TO BECOME AN ACTOR… By Starstruck Talent drama teacher Colin Meredith I have been a professional actor since 1976, entering the profession despite the uncertainty surrounding this particular career path. Noel Coward sang, 'Don’t put Pupils Jody Turner and Lily Mangan recording your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington, the a radio play at PeoplePrint recently in Rochdale. profession is overcrowded and the struggles pretty tough’ and his lyrics certainly ring true! But with talent and perseverance you can still succeed in the business. Through teaching drama for over 20 years, along with professional choreographer Ann Parkinson, I have proudly watched our pupils go on to work in West End theatre and television such as Waterloo Road and Coronation Street. So apart from entering a talent competition how do you get theatre or television acting roles? First of all you need an agent. AGENT: It is an agent’s job to represent you and submit your details to casting directors when they are looking for particular types to fill particular roles. CASTING DIRECTOR: They are employed by directors and production companies to source the best available actors for roles across TV film, radio, theatre and commercials. They do the groundwork and present a shortlist of artistes to the
director, who often makes the final selection to invite for an audition.
reading - both vital skills for auditions.
When your agent rings with an audition you then have to get yourself (sometimes at short notice) to the audition, usually in either London or Manchester. After the audition, the casting director will contact your agent if you have been successful and an offer is made. It is your agent’s job to negotiate the fee on your behalf and they usually take a commission of between 10-20%.
The most important thing to remember though, is to not be disheartened if you don’t get the part. Despite a great audition, someone else may get the role simply because their face better suits the brief. Be patient and the perfect role will eventually come along.
Drama classes are a great way to boost skills and confidence in readiness for any auditions. At Starstruck, our drama activities include improvisation and script-

SEYMOUR MATTHEWS
St Ann's Players presented the thriller 'Dead Man’s Hand', written by Seymour Matthews. This piece had so many twists and turns that it kept the audience in the parish hall guessing until the very end. Jennifer and Brian arrive at an Italian villa on holiday to try and patch up their marriage. Brian is a failed businessman who is hoping to strike a shady deal with Mr Konakis, the mysterious owner of the villa. As they are settling in, David and Corinne arrive; David is a corrupt local councillor who has been taking bribes from Konakis. Franco, a local, arrives too, and the murders start: first Jennifer, then Brian. When Corinne fails to appear, we realise that this is the rehearsal for a play, directed by Franco. The first twist comes when the actors start to get murdered, with the manner of their death reflected in the play. It came as quite a shock to the audience, but once we realized we were watching a play within a play the pace quickened. Judith Mansfield gave a strong performance as Jennifer/Kate who was matched equally by Ian Mansfield as Brian/Martin. He showed authority and
command of his character throughout. Tim Keiley had a difficult role as David/Derek and took on the different emotions of his character with confidence. Dave Stopford as Franco played him with gusto and was able to hold the piece together as the action hots up in the second half. Annette Nodwell as Corinne/Angela was also strong in her smaller role (not much you can do if you get murdered early on!) and Joanne Frost, who never disappoints, was convincing as Pamela. Director Ian Mansfield also took on the mantle of director/producer and assembled a strong cast who really pulled off a difficult thriller!n

Turbot is without doubt one of the kings of the ocean. Its firm white flesh has an amazing delicate flavour and is ideal for roasting, poaching or pan frying. Its quality does come at a premium price so save it for that special occasion.

METHOD 1. Slice the courgette into ½ cm lozenges, season with salt and pepper and a pinch curry powder. 2. Toss the courgettes in flour, then into the egg and finally into the breadcrumbs to get a nice even coating. 3. Deep fry in hot oil at 180°c for 2 minutes until a light golden colour. Keep warm. 4. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick pan, season the turbot then seal in the hot oil until lightly coloured, turn and continue cooking until cooked through. 5. When ready to serve arrange the salad, vegetable balls and asparagus on a plate. Add the warm courgette fritters and top with the turbot and finally mix the vinegar, oil and lemon together, add a good grinding of salt and pepper and drizzle over the top.

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE
rochdale News & events
2013 may be a distant memory for Style readers but for Springhill Hospice, last year’s events were so memorable that it's difficult to forget them.
"November and December were amazing months for us here at the Hospice", said Alison McGuigan, Springhill's Fundraising Lead. She continued: "Meg Johnson and the Mayor Cllr Rush opened our CHRISTMAS FAIR and along with Springy the Frog the pair couldn't have had any idea of the tidal wave of people queuing up behind that red ribbon. With food, gifts and games a-plenty the Christmas Fair was a fantastic day and raised a bumper £12,000 for the Hospice. Overwhelming support from the local community". This year's MAN OF ROCHDALE was announced in style with artist and creative wonder John Whyman announced the deserved winner, recognising his voluntary work, not just at Springhill Hospice but also at Dr Kershaw's Hospice in Oldham, the Floyd Unit and Leonard Cheshire.

Christmas is a busy and emotional time for everyone, however the LIGHTS OF LOVE remembrance services at Springhill were a superb opportunity for people to step back for a while and just remember loved ones. "With a service at The Parish Church and three services at the Hospice we were able to give nearly 1,000 people the chance to remember something that is becoming more and more difficult in the busy lead up to Christmas" said Alison. In complete contrast to the Lights of Love, Hollingworth Lake saw a crazy morning on Sunday 8th of December when a record crowd of over 200 Santa’s took to the roads and ran around Hollingworth Lake in aid of the Hospice. “Thanks to all the Santa clothed supporters, roll on 14th of December this year when we're going to do it all again!!” commented Alison.
SO… WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2014? Springhill Hospice are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and are putting on some special events. The first 'big do' is on SUNDAY 30TH MARCH when the Hospice doors will open for a special MOTHERS DAY SPRING FAIR. Fancy a change to the usual Mother's Day ritual? Bring your mum along to the Hospice between 10 am and 3pm and sample all the fun of the fair. This year there will be a special afternoon tea room, with vintage china and home made goodies so enjoy your Mother's Day experience in the beautiful grounds of Springhill Hospice.
27TH APRIL will see hundreds of walkers from Springhill and Dr Kershaw's Hospices taking part in their annual circular route sponsored HOSPICE TO HOSPICE WALK. At 10.30 am the starting whistles will sound simultaneously at both Hospices, sending hundreds of walkers to each other's Hospices. The 7.25 mile route isn't a daunting distance and sees family and pets showing their support by walking the route come rain or shine. Contact fundraising on 01706 649920 for a registration form or email lillie.winterbottom@nhs.net
And finally a new and very exciting event for the Hospice, FRIDAY 16TH MAY will see the entire community of Rochdale doing their little bit to support the Hospice. GO GREEN DAY for Springhill Hospice gives everyone the opportunity to embrace the colour green at the same time as putting a donation in the bucket - "Dress in green, eat something green, wear a green tie, green eye shadow, create a green cocktail or have a green themed quiz - whatever you are doing, do it with Springhill Pride" said Lillie, Community Fundraiser. Lillie added: "Everyone from St Cuthbert's School to Number One Riverside are getting involved. Building firms and pubs alike are 'being seen in green'. For more details or to tell us what you're planning for the day contact Fundraising 01706 649920. We are hoping to get out to as many of the Go Green events as possible, but if people want Springy to come, they're going to have to get in for Go Green soon!”.
All events will be held at Springhill Hospice, Broad Lane, Rochdale, OL16 4PZ unless otherwise stated. For further details about any of the above, please contact the fundraising department on 01706 649920 or by e-mail lillie.winterbottom@nhs.net www.rochdalestyle.com

ROCHDALE SCHOOL OF ROCK LAUNCHES WITH VIP CONCERT!
Well-known local music teacher and Rock Choir leader Phil Reynolds launched the brand new Rochdale School of Rock and Pop with a weekend of workshops and lessons, culminating in a VIP concert featuring talented young students and very special guest soloist – the fabulous comedian Jimmy Cricket! Royal Academy of Music alumnus Phil Reynolds expained: “The Rochdale School of Rock is located at the historic Tramway Offices on Mellor Street. Our aim is to provide affordable, top quality tuition in modern popular music styles using carefully chosen local musicians. More than that, I wanted to create a music ‘hub’ where musicians and bands can meet, learn, rehearse and forge links. It’s about time we got Rochdale back on the rock music map in the UK, where it belongs!”
GUIDES TAKE ACTION FOR LOCAL NATURE RESERVE
Throughout its history, Girlguiding has been associated with service to the community – and 32nd Rochdale Guides have continued this tradition by working alongside Healey Dell Countryside Rangers on an environmental project that will help conserve local wildlife.
Six Guides and their Leaders volunteered their time on Saturday 1st March, to help cut back the ash re-growth using loppers and saws, and use it to create a habitat spiral – a large structure where insects and small mammals can shelter. Healey Dell Ranger Richard Whittle said: ‘Healey Dell is maintained by a team of countryside rangers and volunteers – it’s great that young people from the area are choosing to get involved too. The Guides have worked really hard, and should be proud of their efforts in helping the community.’
SINGING STAR GIVES FESTIVAL THE X-FACTOR Pop star Lucy Spraggan will be amongst the famous names taking part in Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival this autumn. The 3 day festival will feature the soulful singer-songwriter who shot to fame after making it to the live shows of ITV1’s ‘The X Factor’ in 2012.
