stYLe eXCLUsIVe
Rochdale yachtsman, stuart Bithell, has been confirmed for this summer’s London 2012 olympics, becoming the 21st member of team GB.
the 25-year-old, who started out at Hollingworth Lake sailing Club, will partner scottish-born Luke Patience in the Men’s 470 Class. Bithell and Patience paired up in 2009 and within just two weeks had secured a silver medal at the IsAF World Championships. A year later, the pair were ranked fourth in the world and 2011 ended with another silver medal from the world championships in Perth. they also collected a european Championship silver medal last year.

Not Hollingworth Lake then?! Haha! Hollingworth Lake is not my favourite place to sail, however it was there where I learnt most of my sailing skills, so I owe a lot to the lake.
Best moment in your career so far? Winning a silver medal at the World Championships 2009 with my new teammate Luke Patience.
What does your Olympic training involve? Lots of organising! Hard work in the gym, and many days and hours spent on the water, ideally in warmer climates!
Who do you think will be your biggest rivals at the Games? Anyone and everyone!
Why do you think you and Luke make such a great duo? It's hard to explain to a non sailor, but there are so many different skills required in sailing and mine and Luke's skill strengths are wildly different, thus making us a solid team all round.
Do you think the Games will be a great thing for the country? 100% yes! I also hope it inspires young people to have a go at sailing.
What do you do in your spare time? Many sports that involve wind and water, spear fishing, golf and relaxing at home.

COMEDIAN
JOSH WIDDICOMBE
STYLE EXCLUSIVE One of the UK’s fastest rising comedians brings his new live show to the Middleton Arena this spring during his nationwide tour. Josh Widdicombe will be on stage at the arena on Saturday 12 May, in a double bill alongside Seann Walsh. Josh Widdicombe, probably best known from his performance on the latest series of BBC1’s ‘Live at the Apollo’ has also appeared on ‘The Rob Brydon Show’ and ‘8 out of 10 Cats’.

COM ING TO M IDDL AREN ETON A ON SAT 12 M AY.
What advice would you give to young aspiring comedians? Do lots of gigs, try and write as much as possible and don't worry about things as much as I do, it'll drive you mad. What does the future hold? I have no idea what it holds, but I imagine baldness, wrinkles and eventually death, unless something can be sorted out to stop that process in the next 50 years or so. Tell us a joke… Doctor Doctor I swallowed a bone. Are you choking? No, I really did! Josh Widdicombe and Seann Walsh will both be on stage at the Middleton Arena on Saturday 12 May. Tickets (£12) are available from www.seetickets.com, 0871 230 0010, or in person at the arena box office.
Josh Widdicombe
Last year Josh was shortlisted for the Best Newcomer in the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards. His upbringing in a tiny village in rural Devon didn’t prepare him for the realities of life and relationships, and his show promises to provide an hilarious insight into the daily foibles of another one of comedy’s rising stars, with observations and dilemmas we can all relate to!
Which comedians make you laugh? Loads. Rhod Gilbert, Henry Paker, James Acaster, Nick Helm, Tim Vine, Jon Richardson, Sean Lock, Harry Hill etc. To be honest, I think I may need to try to be less easy to please...
When did you first realise you could make people laugh? I think everyone can make people laugh, your friends at least. I realised I could make strangers laugh at my first gig, though over the first years as a stand up I have had a few gigs that have made me question that ability...!
What can we expect from your upcoming tour? It is my first Edinburgh show, so an hour of all the best bits I came up with in my first three and a bit years as a stand up. At the Middleton Arena I am on with Seann Walsh, who will be doing his show as well and is absolutely brilliant, so I am looking forward to it.
Where do you find inspiration for your stand-up? I tend to get irritated and frustrated with most things in life, luckily I can try and gain something out of this by turning it into jokes. All the best art comes out of negative experience, right?
What has been the highlight of you career so far? This interview of course.
Do you prefer tv panel shows or live stand-up? Live stand up. Panel shows can be fun, but the process of writing and performing stand up is why I got into this and I am not bored of it yet.
Seann Walsh
Style has teamed up with Rochdale Borough Council and the Middleton Arena to offer readers a chance to see Josh and Seann on their fantastic double bill! We have a pair of tickets up for grabs – just enter the competition on page 75. Ruth Meredith

get Fit for sPriNg If you’ve started to dig out the skimpier garments from your wardrobe, your bubble may burst if you discover pale-looking flabby bits squatting where there once was lightly tanned firm flesh. Here are some top tips to jumpstart your spring fitness regime from Michelle Matthews of Ladies Only Ltd gym.
h Get your walking boots out and enjoy some spring fresh air. From doctors surgeries to shopping centres, loads of places in Rochdale organise group walks you can go on, including the spooky evening Ghost Walk in Rochdale town centre. h Spend a couple of hours at the weekend looking for some tasty recipes using seasonal local produce. Ideally, with an equal balance of starchy carbohydrate, lean protein and fibre rich ingredients. If you plan meals in advance and buy what you need you’re less likely to be tempted by convenience meals. h I do know a few people who love cleaning, but it’s certainly not something that pushes my buttons. Turn your spring clean into a fun, aerobic workout by cranking up some up-beat music and blitzing the whole house. It’s a win:win situation for both you and your home. h Buy a professional gym hula-hoop for an aerobic workout at home. Hooping improves balance, stability, co-ordination and core strength. It can also get the party started when you start passing it round at your spring barbeque. Ladies Only Ltd gym retail weighted hoops of all sizes and weights for adult exercise between £21-£27. We recommend you come in and try them all so you can order the one that’s right for you in your favourite colour. h If you have a summer holiday planned, hang your trophy outfit in the bedroom so it’s the first thing you see each morning. Thinking about how amazing you can look in it will help you avoid being overindulgent and under-active. a healthy lifestyle is all about planning, with a positive mindset and this is the perfect time of year to get your brain in gear and focus on all aspects of your health.

eco-FrieNdLY CoNfettI When cereal farmer Charles Hudson decided to diversify his business, little did he realise he would have vicars nationwide singing his praises. From the flower fields of the Vale of Evesham in Worcestershire, he is quietly revolutionising the market in confetti.
Style has teamed up with The Real Flower Confetti Company to giveaway a gorgeous basket filled with Purple Cones and Rainbow Delphinium Petals. To be in with a chance of winning, just enter the competition on page 75.

on a late spring afternoon some ten years ago, charles hudson paused outside the local churchyard on his way home. strewn around the lych-gate lay the debris from an earlier wedding. tiny wet pieces of coloured paper, sodden and mucky, had turned the church entrance into an eyesore. On arriving home some petals fell from the flower bouquet Charles was carrying for his wife and he experienced a 'eureka' moment, the idea of Real Flower Petal Confetti was born. With wheat prices in a downward spiral, it was the ideal time to diversify. After messing around drying petals from the garden he realised that delphinium petals keep their colour, texture and shape when dried. He now grows delphiniums on eight acres of his 600 acre estate, which his family have farmed for four centuries. The delphiniums, which grow up to seven feet tall, are harvested in the autumn by a large team of local people. The petals are dried and sifted to remove seed pods and beetles and sorted into colours. After his first harvest in 1999, the business has grown worldwide and now fields over 200 enquiries a week, selling around £70,000-worth of confetti in an average year. Looking to increase business, Charles is also experimenting with other dried flowers such as marigolds, japonica, cornflowers and scabious, which could be mixed with the delphiniums to add a subtle burst of colour. Charles is confident it will soon take over as the most widely used confetti, as many churches and stately homes don’t allow paper or foil confetti. Many brides and grooms are also looking for a product that is natural, biodegradable and kind to the environment.

FeeL good AND eAt WeLL at eMPoriUM’s NeW caFé A brand new and exciting café has opened its doors in rochdale town centre. the feel Good Café is the first business to open within rochdale emporium, a new retail destination on the second floor of 87-89 Yorkshire Street, above 25 ten Boutique.
Regular events will take place in the café such as live music, poetry readings, art exhibitions and cookery demonstrations. It aims to be a hive of activity and a place to find out what is happening in the borough. The café takes its name from the successful annual Rochdale Feel Good Festival and as such will be used as one of the official venues during the event, but also a way to stage Feel Good style events all through the year. The interior of the café reflects this, with strong festival images on the walls and bright, modern colours used throughout. Debbie O’brien, chief Executive of rochdale Town centre Management said, “This is a new initiative for the town centre and a fantastic opportunity to bring that feel-good atmosphere to the town every day of the week. This project is all about supporting local 38

businesses, as well as shouting about what’s going on in Rochdale and we hope that our future customers will really benefit from the personal service and unique customer experience it brings. The café will be not-for-profit and we hope that people of the borough will support it.”
The Feel Good Café is open Monday to Saturday, serving hot and cold light bites, drinks and desserts. A special ‘Feel Good Cupcake’ will also be launched, which has been especially created by Browns Handcrafted Cakes on St. Mary’s Gate.
Paul Turner-Mitchell, chair of rochdale borough high Street foundation said, “Not so long ago this was a derelict, dusty space and it's great to see it being transformed into what promises to be a vibrant community hub. Mary Portas has called on councils to do everything possible to bring empty buildings back into use and it's really encouraging to see our local authority leading the way on this. If we're to turn our high street around we need to develop a stronger cafe culture to make our town centre a fantastic place to socialise, eat and relax. This is a positive move in the right direction."
The remaining four units in rochdale Emporium would be suitable for businesses such as retailers of vintage clothing, upmarket gifts and accessories. Anyone who is interested should contact manager@rochdaletcm.co.uk or phone 01706 926676.

Kevin Long on loan from Burnley FC
Since our last edition, rochdale football Club has been having a difficult time of things in Division one and as a result they announced the appointment of John Coleman as their new first team manager on 24th January 2012. The 49-year-old joins Dale after twelve years in charge at League Two side Accrington Stanley. John is joined by his former assistant at Accrington Stanley, Jimmy Bell; a move that sees the two men continue a managerial partnership which has spanned more than fourteen years. John and Jimmy’s first match in charge at Rochdale was the 3-0 derby win over Bury on 28th January. At the time of going 40

to press Rochdale had won twice, lost twice and drawn three times under the new management. This includes an impressive away draw to top of the league Charlton and a draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Upon his appointment, John moved quickly to bring in defender Kevin Long from Championship side Burnley. He made the move to Spotland on a month
long emergency loan at the end of January, but has seen his deal extended through until 28th April, after an impressive initial spell at the club. As ever, there are still some important fixtures left until the end of the season and Style Magazine would like to offer the club every success in staying up this year.

hair todaY GoNe enjoy smooth skin this season toMorroW another day where you jump into the shower, look down at your legs and you could be forgiven for thinking one of your primordial ancestors had replaced you. if only hair would grow where we want it and leave our legs, underarm and bikini line smooth and hair free.
M
aybe you have tried waxing and electrolysis? But wouldn’t it be amazing if the hair reduction was more permanent. A new revolutionary permanent hair removal system is now available. IPL (Intense pulse light treatment) is the latest in permanent hair reduction technology. IPL uses a broad light spectrum to target hair follicles, causing permanent damage to the follicle so that hair cannot grow back; answering all our prayers. IPL is different to laser hair removal which beams a single ray of light which can be more intense than IPL light. As a result IPL is safer and can be used on a wider variety of skin types. IPL hair removal could also be more cost effective than laser treatments, because there is less time involved and fewer treatments are needed to be as effective. As a result there is less of a risk of skin damage because skin isn’t exposed for as long to the light.
IPL is not suitable for all hair types though; there are some hair and skin types which cannot be treated this way; • Afro- Caribbean skins cannot be treated with IPL due to the high levels of melanin found in the skin which would attract the light and absorb it into the skin causing a burn • Vellus or white hair because there isn’t enough melanin in the hair to absorb the light • Pregnant ladies unfortunately cannot be treated
if you are unsure whether iPL is right for you, contact the retreat on 01706 868 898 for a Free consultation and patch test.
The best news is that not only is IPL reported to be more effective it is also reported to be less painful than laser hair removal; what more could we ask for? Take care to look for a specialist whose IPL machine offers icycle technology, which cools the crystal used in the machine to freeze the area being treated, making it much more comfortable and therefore lending itself to larger treatment areas without discomfort and with great results

Colouredge is the title of a public art commission celebrating the 10th anniversary of Littleborough Arts Festival. Artists Maxine Kennedy and Paul Haywood are designing a bespoke selection of colours that will represent the Pennine edge. They have become fascinated by environments and horizons that evidence the identity of a location through traces of colour that have been weathered by natural processes and human interactions and influenced by ambient conditions. This exhibition will specifically highlight the final architectural paint palette and bring the project to a wider audience. See more on www. colouredge.org.
This exhibition tells the story of the origins of the Co-operative Movement and how it started right here in Rochdale focusing on the lives of the local men who went on to become the Rochdale Pioneers. It will also showcase the exciting plans for the £3 million extension of the historic Toad Lane’s Pioneer Museum which will reopen in Dec 2012 to celebrate the Year of the Co-operatives.

Nora Fok is a pioneering contemporary jeweller and 3D designer who works with ordinary materials to create extraordinary pieces from familiar forms to large wearable sculptures. The processes Fok uses – knitting, weaving, crocheting and knotting – transform linear nylon monofilament into complex structures, inspired by her fascination with the natural world and the mathematical models that underpin it. Touchstones Rochdale is the only North West venue for Nora’s exhibition.

Gordon Cheung’s mixed-media paintings depict epic, dream-like landscapes where the natural world collides with the structures of globalisation. Through his use of collaged Financial Times stock listings as the base for each painting, Cheung’s work raises questions about contemporary society, such as the impact of technology and whether a utopian vision of the future can still exist.

Rochdale, home of the Co-operative Movement, has been declared the ‘World Capital of Co-operatives’ and will be hosting events across the borough throughout 2012 in celebration of the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives. The message for the year is “Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World. It unites organisations and people working to meet common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations and the borough is getting ready to welcome visitors from all over the world as part of this international celebration.
As the nation prepares to host the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, here in the borough of Rochdale we will see the completion of a building programme of more than ÂŁ34 million investing in new sports and arts facilities. These facilities will showcase an exciting programme of Big Year events that joins with many local clubs and groups to help provide a lasting legacy for this exciting year.
This year also sees Touchstones Rochdale celebrating its 10th Anniversary as an awardwinning arts and heritage centre and visitor attraction. There is an exciting programme of exhibitions and events to mark the Cultural Olympiad of London 2012, the International Year of Co-operatives and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
It is also, of course, 10 years since the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. For many it will bring back memories of visiting the Games, volunteering or taking part in the Spirit of the Games festival. We now have the opportunity to ‘Be Inspired’ in 2012 and build further on this local legacy.
To mark 60 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will centre around an extended bank holiday weekend in June. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897 and this historic event will be at the heart of the year’s local celebrations.

St Ann's Players, Belfield
All good farces have a complicated plot and the St Ann's Players recent production of Cash On Delivery was no exception. Directed by David Fielding, this slick production had so many twists and turns it left the audience dizzy, whilst losing none of the sharp humour in Michael Cooney's carefully constructed script. It spent five minutes or so winding itself up, setting up situations and characters and dropping hints at the mayhem to come. The mayhem revolves around Eric Swan (Ian Mansfield), who lost his job a couple years ago and has since been making a living by cheating the Social Security office. He has a number of fictitious tenants, all of whom suffer from various disabilities and special circumstances, entitling them to government benefits. But it's gotten too deep for Eric and he wants out; he can only keep it from his wife, Linda (Judith Mansfield) for so long and his conscience is starting to bother him. Only his Uncle George (Keith Taylor) knows the details of his elaborate secret money-making scheme. Before he can kill off all the characters though, things begin to unravel. DSS weasel Mr. Jenkins (Dave Stopford) shows up needing the signature of both Eric Swan and his non-existent tenant. Eric can't play both people, obviously, so his real tenant, Norman Bassett (Tim Keiley) is brought in. Norman is an easily flustered man who wants no part in the fraud,
which of course just makes it funnier, as unwilling participants are so much better than willing ones. The action at times was hysterical, taking the audience on a roller coaster of laughter. Ian Mansfield gave an admirable performance as Eric and Keith Taylor was a treat as the cooperative, bumbling Uncle George. Keeping the pace going were a strong cast of eleven, including Norman's fiancée and assorted officials from the council. Finally the labyrinth of lies, mistaken identities and hasty inventions leads to an incredibly convoluted plot involving a drunk council official, a mad mother who eats wall paper, two corpses, one deaf piano tuner, one lumberjack, several cross dressers and a very temperamental washing machine. The large cast were all superb, competent and clearly enjoyed themselves. n

Game Plan The Mad Theatre Company, Milnrow
MADS autumn production was the Alan Ayckbourn comedy GamePlan. There were some regular MADS players in this production, as well as some young new faces. We begin in a London Docklands apartment where 16-year-old Sorrel (Rachael Mayor) lives with her mother Lynette Saxon (Marion Astley). Things aren’t looking too good; the man in their lives left with Lynette's business partner and their internet business went under. As a result Lynette has been working twelve hour shifts as an office cleaner and money is tight. Much to Sorrel’s horror, Lynette thinks they may have to move away from London, but Sorrel thinks she has a plan to save the day. In her desperation, she uses the internet to advertise herself as a classy call girl. She enlists the help of her schoolfriend and neighbour, the slightly dim Kelly Butcher (Kate Threlfall) and half the fun is in watching the girls set up this venture. With Kelly as the maid and minder, providing some suitable props, her first client finally turns up. Leo Tyler (George Lee) isn't a bad guy, he asks for tea instead of a drink and tuts disapprovingly at the girly magazines the girls have spread out to get him in the mood. But 60
www.rochdalestyle.com
things don't quite go quite to plan and Leo ends up being both the first and last of Sorrel's clients, after he collapses from a massive heart-attack. Sorrel and Kelly later move Leo’s body and tip him over the balcony into the Thames below. Sorrel can’t erase all traces of her failed business venture and eventually, the police arrive at the apartment in the form of detective Dan Endicott (Peter Dignan) and WPC Grace (Wendy Hardiker) asking questions. The cast is completed by Michael Partington, as Troy Stephens, in a production that proves to be good entertainment. This is not one of Ayckbourn’s masterpieces, however director Jane Jeffrey gets the poignancy from this script and the characters are nicely captured. n Colin Meredith
The Sound of music
The Gracie Fields Theatre 14th Feb - 18th Feb 2012
Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society pulled out all the stops in their recent production of The Sound of Music, directed by Howard Raw, with Musical Direction by John Stevens. No introductions are needed for this Rodgers & Hammerstein timeless classic, which tells the story of Maria and the Von Trapp family and is packed to the brim with well-loved songs, such as My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss and Climb Every Mountain. Laura Meredith-Hoyle shone as Maria, perfectly capturing the spirit and mischievousness of the character. She was well supported by the very talented James Cockerill as Captain Von Trapp, who gave a tear-jerking rendition of Edelweiss. The seven Von Trapp children won the hearts of the audience, each giving professional and spirited performances. Vicky Radburn showed off her impressive vocal ability as Mother Abbess in her powerful delivery of Climb Every Mountain. Sean Howarth (Rolf) and Angela Grady (Countess Elsa Shraeder) also put in strong performances and the a cappella singing nun's never failed to impress. The cast received an enthusiastic applause from a very satisfied audience, many of whom found it hard to resist humming Do-Re-Mi as they left the theatre!

the Waterside DINING Review
The Style Magazine team recently dined at The Waterside, in Littleborough and were very impressed with what was on offer for the discerning diner.
e received a warm welcome from husband and wife team, Lisa and Kristan Groom, as we enjoyed our pre dinner drinks, in the comfortable reception area and bar. It was noticeable that a diner in a wheelchair was able to reach all areas of the restaurant, something not always possible.
W
Spanish Rioja wine gravy, which I’m told was delicious.
As we perused the varied menu, two of our party chose to opt for the set Sunday menu, which offered a great choice at a reasonable price.
The Waterside won Best North West Restaurant in last year’s Hi Life Diners Club Awards, demonstrating their high level of service and attention to detail.
My roast pork loin with crackling was particularly tasty and portion sizes were generous, whilst being artistically and delicately presented. One of our party ordered the signature fillet steak, served with an oven blushed tomato, garlic, thyme and
All of our party enjoyed fantastic food and excellent customer service, while the ambient setting made for our wonderful dining experience. The menu was complimented with an excellent choice of wine to accompany every dish.
As ‘British cuisine’ continues to establish its own identity, it’s easy to see why groundbreaking restaurants like the Waterside are becoming more and more successful. Colin Meredith

At times, the world can seem a pretty gloomy place. Economic woes, political tension in the Middle East and England’s football team in its current state of disarray dominate the news. But, at least in the motoring world there is something to look forward to, as it seems that the rear wheel drive sports car is about to enjoy a second wind.
The genre has died off in recent years with the Porsche Cayman having the market to itself. But a £40k price tag hardly makes it the spiritual successor to the Ford Capri as the working man’s sports car. But good news is on the horizon as Subaru and Toyota have teamed up to develop a new low-slung sports coupe with that all-important rear wheel drive transmission. TOYOTA will be first to market

HEAPS OF ROCHDALE HISTORY
Leven House The Practice House 70 Spotland Road Rochdale c.1910
ere are two prominent men buried in the grounds of Rochdale Parish Church who played a significant part in the history and development of Rochdale as an industrial force.
Samuel Heap and his son William began their rise to prominence in the late 1700’s; their history and that of the Heap family of Rochdale are detailed in a new book ‘Blue Clogs’, by ancester and former Rochdale GP Derek Heap.
e Heap descendents are now scattered worldwide, but this book brings together the history of this significant family who originated from Worsthorne, near Burnley and arrived in Rochdale to change the history of the town.
Blue Clogs pays tribute to the lives and times of the Heap family covering a period of two hundred and seventy years from the birth of the Industrial Revolution until the present day.
ose who worked for Heaps at their Caldershaw mill will remember how Heaps were taken over by the textile giant Courtauld in 1964 and how the curtain eventually came down on 140 years of textile production in Rochdale. e book is full of illuminating photographs and provides an in-depth history of our town and how the Heaps employed generations of Rochdale people.
e Heap family participated in great socioeconomic, political and religious change in which the family contributed a great deal, two of their number ending up as Mayors of Rochdale.

On Sunday 22 April 2012, Whitworth will hold its annual celebration of England’s patron saint, St George, organised by the Tourism and Leisure Committee of Whitworth Town Council. The celebrations will begin at 2pm with a procession, to the sound of Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Brass Band, starting at the corner of Market Street and Tong Lane, led by a dragon and ‘St George’. The procession will conclude at the Riverside (Civic Hall), where a Service of Celebration will take place at 2.15pm. The service will include a performance by the Curtain Theatre Company of the traditional ‘Pace Egg’ play – once widespread throughout England but now only practised in Lancashire and West Yorkshire, the Pace Egg sees brave St George battle numerous contenders, with good eventually triumphing over evil.
