l mundo cambia aceleradamente y junto a él evolucionamos con el propósito de escribir páginas relevantes; historias de amor, motivación y emprendimiento capaces de inspirar un cambio tanto interno como externo. En esta, nuestra edición aniversario número 19, conversamos con Gian Marco y Carlos Baute sobre sus carreras musicales, entramos en la mente de Dayana Mendoza para descubrir qué la motiva y escuchamos relatos de personalidades del arte y la moda, quienes —con pasión— influyen en la construcción de nuevas formas de pensamiento. Cada edición, como cada día, nos regala un nuevo despertar y la oportunidad de seguir descubriendo la magia de quienes hacen los sueños realidad.

WE ARE REBORN TO EVOLVE The world is changing fast and with it we are evolving with the purpose of writing relevant pages; love, motivation and entrepreneurship stories capable of inspiring both an internal and external change. In our 19th anniversary edition, we spoke with Gian Marco and Carlos Baute about their musical careers, we entered the mind of Dayana Mendoza to discover her motivation and we heard stories from art and fashion personalities, who —passionately— influence the construction of new ways of thinking. Each edition, like each day, gives us a new awakening and the opportunity to continue discovering the magic of those who make dreams come true. ctriz, escritora y conferencista, Laura Chimaras obtuvo protagónicos en RCTV, junto con 18 proyectos de televisión y cine, a muy temprana edad, enamorándose como una adolescente de la actuación y descubriendo, años más tarde, que no se trataba de un cuento de hadas con un “para siempre”. Acogida por un apellido, una vena artística y con el talento para seguir el camino obvio, la hija del actor venezolano Yanis Chimaras reconoce que el giro que ha tomado su carrera también es influencia de su padre, algo que entendió tras publicar su primer libro, Pasiones narcóticas.

Actress, writer and lecturer, Laura Chimaras was cast as lead role in RCTV, along with 18 projects of television and films at a very early age, falling in love as a teen with acting, and discovering, years later, that it was not a fairy tale with a “happily ever after”. Laura, backed by her last name, an artistic vein and the talent to follow the obvious path, the daughter of Venezuelan actor Yanis Chimaras acknowledges the spin her career has taken is also influenced by her father, something she understood after publishing her first book, Pasiones narcóticas. (Narcotic Passions).

¿En qué momento supiste que querías hacer algo diferente a ejercer la actuación como carrera? > Ese mundo me lo estaba haciendo vivir mi papá. Me enamoré de la actuación, pero cuando comencé a tomar independencia, me di cuenta que eso no era lo que quería hacer, aunque me encantaba. Toda mi vida he sido lo que un contrato decía. Crecí preguntándome quién era yo; la respuesta era: “Soy un ser humano que jugaba a ser personajes” y no me sentía bien sabiendo eso; ahí comenzó la búsqueda.

At what point did you realize you wanted to do something different than having and actoral career? > My dad was making me live that world. He made me fall in love with acting, but as I started to become independent, I realized it was not what I wanted to do, even though I loved it. All my life I have been what a contract said I was. I grew up asking myself who I was; the answer was “I am a human being who played being characters”, and I did not feel good knowing this; that is where the search began.

¿Hasta dónde llegó la influencia de tu papá en tu carrera? > Papá me regalaba libros, veía oportunidades para conversar sobre temas que me aportaran, fue muy sublime la manera en la que me influyó. Lo extraño muchísimo. A los 13 años me regaló un libro, Cien años de soledad, cuya dedicatoria decía que esperaba que yo fuera una mujer culta en letras y una gran profesional. Cuando entro en este camino, es que entiendo ese mensaje.

How far has your father influenced your career? > Dad gave me books, he saw opportunities to talk about topics that would advance me, the way he influenced me was very sublime. I miss him dearly. When I was 13 years old he gave me a book, One Hundred Years of Solitude, whose dedication said that he expected me to be a literate woman and a great professional. When I entered this path is when I understood this message.

Lo entendiste después de tu primer libro, pero ¿cómo comenzaste a escribir? > Quería conectarme con las personas que me seguían, pensaba que la tecnología nos apartaba de todo, pero me puse a estudiar y cambié mi percepción; me abrí un blog y empecé a hacer escritos cotidianos. Cuando presenté Pasiones narcóticas y hablé de esta experiencia fue cuando me dije: “Voy a escribir y quiero hablar con las personas”. Luego hicimos la gira para conversar sobre cómo renací en la escritura y encontré la Laura que quiero ser de ahora en adelante.

You understood it after you wrote your first book, but how did you begin to write? > I wanted to connect with the people who followed me, I thought technology drew us all apart, but I started studying and changed my perception; I opened a blog and I began to make everyday writings. When I presented Pasiones narcóticas and talked about this experience, it was when I said to myself “I want to write and speak to people”; then we did the tour to speak of how I was reborn through writing and I met the Laura I want to be from now on. Pasiones narcóticas y La historia de una adicta son títulos que evocan una dependencia. ¿Hay una razón particular para escribir desde ese punto de vista? > Mi mamá fue adicta durante muchos años. Cuando papá muere (2007) ella cae en una profunda depresión, pero él siempre me adelantaba a las situaciones; yo tenía información desde muy pequeña que no entendía por la edad, pero que ahora la comprendo, entendí que saqué las cosas de mi infancia. Mi mamá me desglosó esa explicación y me hizo comprender mi interés sobre la adicción.

Pasiones narcóticas (Narcotic Passions) and La historia de una adicta (The Story of an Addict) are titles that evoke dependence. Is there a particular reason to write from that point of view > My mom was an addict for many years. When my father died (2007) she fell into a deep depression, but he always prepared me for the situations to come; I had information from a very young age that I did not understand because of my age, but I do now, I understood that I took everything from my childhood. My mom broke that explanation down for me and made me understand my interest in addiction.

¿De qué otra forma has experimentado estos momentos de claridad? > Desde hace dos años me empecé a involucrar con personas con las que trato tópicos muy profundos, ahora me enamoro más de lo que hay adentro y no del modelo de portada, aunque tiene que existir una atracción física. Mis procesos creativos son tan fuertes que llega ese click, donde algo se quiebra en la relación. Esas situaciones me llevaron a conocer a la persona con quien estoy hoy, tenemos disciplinas distintas pero seguimos adelante. Capaz tenemos una percepción de la realidad muy similar y eso me lleva a abrirle la puerta. ¡Bueno, lo voy a intentar! —Risas—.

How else have you experienced these moments of clarity? > Since two years ago I started to get involved with people with whom I deal with very deep topics, now I fall more in love with what is inside than with the cover model. My creative processes are so strong that that click comes where something breaks in the relationship. Those situations led me to meet the person with whom I am today, and although we have different disciplines, we move forward. Perhaps we have a very similar perception of reality and that is what leads me to open the door for him. Well, I’m going to try! —Laughs—.

¿En qué otro asunto te basas en el presente para trabajar en el futuro? > Me estoy enfocando en las conferencias de Hackea tu realidad, pero ya estoy trabajando en la biografía de mi papá, hablando desde mi punto de vista familiar, siempre dejándolo en alto porque realmente estoy honrando su vida, en este libro estaré contando cómo influyó en lo que soy y dando la razón de por qué tú estás comprando un ticket para mi conferencia o leyendo mis libros.

On what other subject do you rely on the present to work in the future? > I am focusing on the conferences of Hackea tu realidad (Hack your reality), but I am already working on my dad’s biography, speaking from my point of view as a family member, always speaking highly of him because I am honoring his life, but telling how he influenced who I am and giving reasons of why are you buying a ticket for one of my conferences or reading one of my books.

La joven pakistaní impulsó una campaña por los derechos civiles de la mujer en su nación. Un atentado casi le cuesta la vida, pero continuó su labor ganando el Premio Nobel de la Paz a los 17 años de edad.

Reconocido por ser el baterista de Def Leppard, grupo de rock británico, perdió su brazo izquierdo tras un accidente de auto. Su determinación lo hizo volver al instrumento y convertirse en uno de los íconos del género.

A la actriz estadounidense le fue diagnosticado cáncer de seno en el año 2008, por lo que tuvo que someterse a una doble mastectomía, lo que no le impidió continuar su exitosa carrera artística hasta la actualidad.

A los 21 años le fue diagnosticada una enfermedad neurodegenerativa. Su parálisis física no le impidió mantenerse como el mayor referente en el campo de la ciencia durante 55 años.

The American actress, winner of an Emmy Award and nominated for a Tony and Golden Globe awards, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, opting for a double mastectomy. She today continues her successful artistic career.

He had just turned 21 years old when he was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease. But his physical paralysis did not stop him from remaining the main reference in the field of science for 55 years.

A los 13 años de edad esta surfista estadounidense sufrió un ataque de tiburón que le hizo perder su brazo izquierdo. Al mes del accidente regresó a las playas y desde entonces ha alcanzado varios títulos en la disciplina.

Al nicio de su vida profesional, este brillante matemático norteamericano sufrió esquizofrenia paranoide. Superando su condición, desarrolló teorías que le valieron el Premio Nobel de Economía.

Víctima de un ataque con ácido sulfúrico que le desfiguró su rostro y parte de su cuerpo, esta colombiana hoy es activista contra la violencia de género y reconocida conferencista motivacional.

The Botswanian basketball player became an activist against gender based violence after being shot eight times by her boyfriend. In a wheelchair, the survivor persists in her mission to eliminate this social scourge.

La transformación de la sociedad ha abarcado múltiples etapas, ensayos y errores; sobre todo ha necesitado dejar por escrito la historia para poder mirar al pasado y reencontrar el camino a recorrer frente a un mundo en constante cambio.

n el siglo XV, durante el Renacimiento, encontramos un cambio de ruta entre lo que era y lo que es la sociedad. Se trata de una época que rompió con paradigmas y cuestionó dogmas, algo que en plena entrada al año 2019 nos permite cuestionar si estamos viviendo la Edad Contemporánea a la que dio paso o generando un nuevo hito en la historia cultural de la humanidad. El arte cobró valor y los artistas renacentistas fueron los primeros en disfrutar las mieles de la fama. Este aspecto nos transporta de una época a otra, con seis siglos de diferencia, a través de la premisa de que, gracias a su talento, los creadores de una obra podían adquirir riquezas, escalar jerarquías sociales y hasta posiciones políticas. Otro acontecimiento que marcó a la humanidad fue la divinización de la mujer, cuya imagen se relacionaba con el pecado y lo prohibido durante el medioevo. Hoy podemos ver que la figura femenina se ubica en puestos importantes gracias al empoderamiento por uno u otro mérito, además del poder que ella ha encontrado en sí misma. La llegada de la imprenta, de la mano del alemán Johannes Gutenberg, fue un hecho fundamental para que el Renacimiento fuera considerado una época del conocimiento, puesto que la difusión de los libros se agilizó tras su invención. Al comparar con la actualidad, es natural establecer una analogía con el internet, que ha jugado un papel protagónico en la sociedad del conocimiento; ambas etapas dieron paso a la globalización. Para transitar de la Edad Antigua a la Edad Moderna, las principales figuras renacentistas debieron enfrentar el teocentrismo para encontrar la lógica y la razón dando paso a la ciencia y al antropocentrismo, creyendo en el poder que tiene el hombre para superarse. Society’s transformation has gone through multiple stages, trials and errors; but above all it has had to leave behind a written record of history in order to look at the past and find once more its path to move forward in an ever changing world. In the 15th century, during the Renaissance, we find a path change between what society was and is. We are speaking of an era that broke paradigms and questioned dogmas, something that in early 2019 will allow us to ask the question if we are living in the contemporary age, which gave way or generated a new hiatus in humanity’s historical culture. Art is now valuable and the first artists to have a piece of said value were the renaissance artists. This aspect transports us from one age to another, with six different centuries, through the premise that, thanks to their talent, the creators of an artwork can acquire riches, escalate social hierarchies and even political positions. Another moment that shaped mankind was the divinization of the woman, whose image was related to sin and what was forbidden during the middle ages. Nowadays we can see women in places of power thanks to the empowerment by one merit or another, also, from the power she has found in herself. The invention of the printing press, by German Johannes Gutenberg, was a fundamental fact for the renaissance to be considered an age of knowledge, given the circulation of books accelerated with its invention. If we make a comparison with nowadays, it is only natural to make an analogy with the Internet, which has played a main role in the society of knowledge; both moments gave way to globalization. To go from the Ancient Age to the Modern Age, the main renaissance figures had to face Theocentricism to find logic and reason giving way to science and anthropocentrism, believing in man’s own power to better himself. Nothing shorter than the masses current trend of flattering or depositing in some leaders their hope of them changing the world.

Te felicito por tu nuevo disco, De amor y dolor. ¿Cómo describirías este trabajo a nivel rítmico y de intención? > Musicalmente es el disco más urbano que he hecho en toda mi carrera. Son canciones de amor y dolor, tal como dice el nombre del álbum. El que siente amor, siente dolor en algún momento… El amor duele, aunque sea bonito. Si tus hijos se enferman te duele. Cuando te vas de viaje por trabajo, o emigras y te separas de tu familia, duele. Entonces son canciones de amor y dolor, pero con una base muy bailable, con una música súper positiva. Aún y cuando hay letras muy duras.

Congratulations on your new album, De amor y dolor. How would you describe this album rhythmically speaking and its intention, the intention with which it was made? > Musically speaking it is the most urban album I have ever made. There are songs of love and pain, just like its title says. He who loves, feels pain at some moment… love hurts, even when it may be beautiful. Your children getting sick hurts. When you are away on business trips, or emigrate and separate yourself from your family, it hurts. So there are songs of love and pain, but with a danceable baseline, with super positive music; even when there are harsh lyrics.

En tu disco dedicas una canción a tus hijos, ¿cómo se vive el rol de papá en una época de “renacer” de los roles que están dentro y fuera de la familia? > Creo que siempre ha sido difícil ser padre. No sé si ahora tengamos que excusarnos y decir que hoy es más difícil. No soy quién para decirlo porque no fui padre hace 50 años. Una de las cosas que quiero tener muy presente en la vida de mis hijos son los valores, en cuanto al amor, la amistad, el respeto, la lealtad, la honestidad… Eso tiene que estar presente en sus vidas. Me encargaré, tanto yo como su madre, de implantárselos; que lo entiendan y lo aprendan.

In your album you dedicate a song to your children, how do you take on the role of being a father in an era of role “rebirth” in and out of the family? > I think it has always been difficult to be a father. I do not know if we now have to excuse ourselves and say it is more difficult nowadays. I am not qualified to say so because I was not a father 50 years ago. Something I really want to keep in the life of my kids are the values, regarding love, friendship, respect, loyalty, honesty… this must be present in their lives. I will, as will their mother, take this on to ensure the implementation, understanding and learning from this.

El tema de esta edición de primavera es “renacer”. ¿Qué te hace evocar ese concepto?

The theme of this spring edition is “to be reborn”. What makes you evoke this concept?

CARLOS BAUTE: “RITMOS E IDIOSINCRASIA DE UN CANTAUTOR”. | “RYTHMS AND IDIOSINCRASY OF A SINGER-SONGWRITER”.

> Yo renazco en cada disco que hago. Para mí es como volver a nacer… Hacer cosas distintas, nuevos sonidos, nuevas letras. Como venezolano, creo que estamos renaciendo con lo que está sucediendo hoy día a nivel nacional, a nivel político. Creo que es un renacimiento el que estemos encontrando una oposición como la que tenemos y una ayuda internacional como la que tenemos.

¿Qué te depara el año 2019? > Tengo una promoción súper fuerte hasta finales de abril en España y Latinoamérica. Luego empiezo aquí la gira de conciertos y a partir de allí arranca el tour en España. Voy a tener trabajo, gracias a Dios, hasta que finalice el año; inclusive ya tengo la idea para hacer otro disco para fin de año que va a ser muy emotivo.

Hablando de roles, ¿tienes un rol con el que te sientes más cómodo? Como cantante, escritor, compositor, actor. > Sí. Compositor. Me encanta… creo que es lo que más me gusta, componer y producir. ¿Identificas algún punto de inflexión que hayas vivido en tu carrera para estar donde estás hoy? > Un programa que terminé en febrero, Tu cara me suena. Para mí ha sido un descubrimiento, he aprendido como un niño, me la pasé genial. Fueron unos compañeros, unos amigos brutales. Aprendí muchas cosas como persona y como artista. Tuve que buscar en lo que era yo, lo que soy yo, mi carrera, cómo la he llevado… Al final, la pasamos increíble.

Do you identify any inflexion point or rebirth you have lived in your career to be where you are today? > A show I finished on February, Tu cara me suena. For me it has been a discovery, I have learned like a child, I had a great time. I found some co-workers, some very good friends. I learned many things as a person and as an artist. I had to search deep within myself, what I am, my career, and the road I have taken with it… In the end, we had an amazing time. You have a prolific career you began as a youth. What do you believe is the virtue that has made you achieve it? > I believe it has been by being a composer. Many people do not know it, I compose my own songs, that I am co-producer of my own albums. I learned this thanks to a Venezuelan, Yasmil Marrufo, the person who composed Yo me quedo en Venezuela. For me that man has been my teacher, my mentor, with whom I learnt to produce, and with whom I learnt to write. I realized with him it was my role: to produce and compose.

Tienes una carrera prolífica que comenzaste muy joven. ¿Cuál crees es la virtud que te ha permitido lograrlo? > Creo que ha sido el ser compositor. Mucha gente no lo sabe, que compongo mis canciones, que soy coproductor de mis discos. Aprendí gracias a un venezolano, Yasmil Marrufo, que fue el señor que compuso Yo me quedo en Venezuela. Para mí ese señor ha sido mi maestro, mi mentor, con quien aprendí a producir y con quien aprendí a escribir. Con él me di cuenta de que ese era mi rol: Producir y componer. ¿Cómo piensas que expresa un artista su idiosincrasia? > Tanto en España como en cualquier parte del mundo me dicen “el venezolano Carlos Baute” y me da mucho orgullo, me siento muy orgulloso de ser venezolano y de ayudar a Venezuela con Una medicina para Venezuela; ya tengo varios años colaborando con esta fundación que nos ha dado muchas satisfacciones, que quisiera que no existiera, porque significa que hace falta. Y a nivel musical, cuando hacía folclor venezolano, imagínate, más presente que nunca. En todos mis discos siempre hay algo que tenga que ver con Venezuela. Y en este caso, Vamo´ a la calle, está más que obvio que se la dediqué a todos los que siguen saliendo a la calle a buscar esa Venezuela libre. Entonces creo que está bastante presente en mí, el hecho de ser venezolano.

Speaking of roles, is there a role where you feel more comfortable? Like a singer, writer, composer or actor. > Yes. Composition. I love it… I think it is what I like the most, to compose and produce.

> I am reborn in every album. For me it is like being born again… to do things differently, new sounds, new lyrics. To be reborn again in those moments, as a Venezuelan, I believe we are born again with what is happening nationally nowadays, politically speaking. I believe it is a rebirth in which we are finding an opposition like the one we have, and a new international aid like the one we have.

How do you think an artist expresses his idiosyncrasy? > In Spain like anywhere else in the world they call me “The Venezuelan Carlos Baute” and it gives me great pride, I am very proud of being Venezuelan and helping with Una medicina para Venezuela; I have been collaborating with this foundation that has given us many satisfactions for two years now, which I wish would not to exist, because if it does it means it is still necessary. And musically, when I sang Venezuelan folk, just imagine, closer than ever, and in my albums there is always something about Venezuela. And in this case, Vamo’ a la calle, is more than obvious that it is dedicated to all those who continue to go to the streets seeking that free Venezuela. So I think being Venezuelan is very present within me. What does 2019 hold for you? > I have to strongly engage in promotion until the end of April, in Spain and Latin America. Then I begin the tour on Spain, and from there the Spain tour begins. Thank God I will be working until the end of the year; I even have the idea of making a new album for the end of the year that will be very emotional.

Ser parte del elenco de la súper producción de Telemundo, Betty en NY, le dará la oportunidad de portar la bandera latina en Miami: “Me da mucho gusto que en una serie que se va a transmitir en tantos países los latinos levantemos la voz por medio de la risa.” Contar su experiencia de vida en un monólogo tipo conferencia será el próximo reto de Valeria, el cual quiere llevar a los teatros de Estados Unidos y México. “When you’re so happy doing something, you try to show your full potential”; with this sentence Valeria Vera defines her artistic career that began when she was six in the Artistic Education Center of Televisa, becoming a singer and dancer. Although she did not like school, math and waking up early, thanks to the gifts of dancing, singing and acting, she has developed each area to its peak, not just as an artist, but as a human being. Being part of the cast of Telemundo’s super production, Betty en NY, will give her the opportunity to raise the Latin flag in Miami: “I am enormously pleased with a series that will be seen in so many countries, where Latinos will lift our voices by laughter”. Valeria’s next challenge will be telling her life experience via a conference style monologue, which she wants to do in theaters in the US and Mexico. esde los siete años ha estado involucrado en el mundo de la gastronomía, pues al regresar del colegio ayudaba a su papá en su restaurante en Upata, Venezuela. A partir de ese momento supo que el resto de su vida se dedicaría a emprender en esta área. Decidió llevar su pasión a Estados Unidos y en el año 2015 creó la corporación Bocas Group. Ha fundado nueve restaurantes: Bocas Grill y Bocas House, con cinco y tres sedes respectivamente, donde fusiona la cocina venezolana con la peruana, y Francisca, el primer restaurante al carbón del grupo. Perseverancia y un equipo joven son claves para el crecimiento en cuatro años: “La fortaleza más grande que tenemos es que contamos con un equipo conformado por venezolanos, jóvenes todos menores de 30 años, el amor que se le tiene a la marca, las ganas de dejar en alto nuestro país y el esfuerzo que se le inyecta a los restaurantes día a día, han sido fundamentales para el crecimiento y el reconocimiento del grupo Bocas.” | O.G.

as costumbres y autenticidad de Aruba fueron la inspiración de Curt Harmes quien, en compañía de su hermano Lionel y su padre Curt, emprendió un negocio pensado para exaltar las características de las tiendas locales en la isla. Así nació Local Store, un restaurante que rescata el modelo de los rum shops para adaptarlos a la época actual, ofreciendo una completa experiencia isleña. Una idea que empezó en el centro de Oranjestad, con presentaciones de bandas y DJs, luego —junto a Albert Bruin— se enfocó en resaltar el sabor de sus platos y de la cultura arubeña: “Al mudarnos a Caribbean Store rescatamos nuestro plan original: fomentar al público a interesarse en preservar la cultura local y su herencia.” Así, Albert y Curt trabajan de la mano en la gestión del restaurante para mantener el concepto original. La idea es recreada en el ambiente del restaurante y la sazón de su comida, concebida para cautivar con sabores regionales en cada bocado de sus hamburguesas y alitas con salsas de autor. | H.P.

Since he was seven he has been involved in the gastronomical world, because when he came home from school he helped his father with his restaurant in Upata, Venezuela. Since that moment he knew he would dedicate the rest of his life as an entrepreneur in this area. He decided to take his passion to the USA and at only 25-years of age in 2015 he created the Bocas Group Corporation. Aruba’s customs and authenticity of Aruba were the inspiration of Curt Harme who, along with his brother Lionel and his father Curt, undertook a business conceived to exalt the characteristics of local shops on the island. The result is the creation of Local Store, a restaurant that rescues the model of the rum shops, adapting them to modern times, offering a complete island experience. An idea that was born in the center of Oranjestad, with presentations by bands and DJs, then —together with Albert Bruin— focused on enhancing the flavor of their dishes and the culture of Aruba: “Once we moved to Caribbean Store we retrieved our original plan: to encourage the public´s interest in preserving their local culture and its heritage. That’s how Albert and Curt work hand to hand on the management of the restaurant. Al emigrar a Estados Unidos, en su búsqueda por reinventarse, obtuvo un certificado como fitness trainer y comenzó a dar clases en forma de circuito dos veces por semana, creciendo hasta manejar su propio gimnasio de entrenamiento funcional en la ciudad de Doral, Estados Unidos. From an early age, her parents instilled in her the importance of practicing sports and staying healthy. En ese momento comenzó su carrera artística: “Hice mucho teatro, radio, televisión, cortos de cine, series, hasta que llegó esta oportunidad de hacer por primera vez un proyecto para Televisa de Leonardo Padrón, Amar a muerte, donde interpretaré a La Muerte.” Para Nastassia, participar en este proyecto es una manera de agradecer a México por haberle abierto las puertas para forjar su desarrollo profesional durante todos estos años. Her vocation has always been theater, and even when she discovered her talent when she was 6, her preparation began once she immigrated to Mexico from her native Venezuela, where she studied voice acting, dubbing and a specialization in accent reduction and pronunciation. In that moment she began her artistic career: “I did a lot of theater, radio, television, movie previews and series, until this opportunity came to work for the first time for Televisa in Leonardo Padrón’s Amar a muerte, where my role was Death”. For Nastassia, her participation in this project is a way to thank Mexico for opening the doors to forge her professional development throughout all these years. Discipline and patience are two qualities that have defined the success of her career: “You need to have a lot of perseverance, patience and discipline when you already know the passion you want to develop”. Bringing the natural flavors of his native Barquisimeto (Venezuela) to The United States was the motivation of this charismatic young chef to undertake a very successful road in the culinary world. His family, owners of a Chinese restaurant, were his motivation to study culinary arts in San Ignacio University, Miami, which propelled King Sam Chang’s desire to create Kurvan Food, a unique proposal of gourmet “pepitos” with unusual ingredients in the street food branch: truffle oil, pesto and caramelized onions. uando era niña, Xuxa era la encargada de colocar la música en las fiestas. El día que lo hizo ante un público, fue el día que descubrió su pasión. Aunque nació y creció en la ciudad de Punto Fijo, Venezuela, cruzó un pequeño trecho de Caribe para asentarse en Aruba, sitio que eligió por su buena energía, y darle play a su carrera como DJ. El objetivo de sus shows, donde personaliza sus sets según los asistentes, es inducir al público a un estado de euforia con sus mezclas musicales. “Ser DJ es ser líder”, comenta sobre la responsabilidad que conlleva estar a cargo de la vibra de un evento. Xuxa ha transformado la opinión de quienes desconfiaban de su talento: “Dudan mucho de mí por ser mujer, pero verlos cambiar de parecer al verme hacer lo que amo es lo más satisfactorio.” Para ella, cada presentación es una práctica y, pese a que planifica viajar a Europa para seguir creciendo profesionalmente, se mantendrá radicada en Aruba: “Esta isla con su encanto te atrapa demasiado.” | M.R.

When she was a child, Xuxa was in charge of putting on the show for parties. The day she did it in public was when she discovered her passion. Although she was born and raised in Punto Fijo, Venezuela, she crossed a piece of the Caribbean to settle in Aruba, a place she picked due to its good vibe, and to begin her career as a DJ. Enfocada en vivir de forma más sana, creó Arubalife Organics: “Al quedar embarazada me dediqué a una vida más saludable. Empecé prestando atención a lo que comía, luego me pregunté qué había en mi maquillaje.” Sus preguntas dieron como respuesta el concepto de su emprendimiento, basado en el uso de minerales y pigmentos naturales para la creación de diferentes artículos de belleza. More than selling a product, Julienne Paskel seeks to transmit an ideology through her hand-made creations. She has expressed her unstoppable creativity through her career as an art manager and designer and each project she embraces, being a part of the cultural department of Aruba since 2010, when she returned to the island after studying and working in the Netherlands. Focusing on living a healthier life, she founded Arubalife Organics: “Once I was pregnant, I dedicated myself to a healthier life. I began by watching what I ate, then I asked myself what was in my makeup”. Her questions gave her the concept of her entrepreneurship, based on the use of minerals and natural pigments in the creation of different beauty products. uego de transitar por el mundo de la presentación y la música, una vez que Jhon Watts entró en contacto con la radio, encontró la vocación que hoy se traduce en más de 20 años de carrera. En el Instituto Nacional de Telecomunicaciones de su país, Colombia, adquirió destrezas para el manejo de las cuerdas vocales y la modulación; lo que al inicio le parecía poco atractivo despertó en él un sinfín de emociones: “Sentía que no estaba bien de la cabeza al estar encerrado solo en una cabina hablándole a un micrófono.” Poco a poco descubrió sus aptitudes, construyendo una trayectoria en el medio en Aruba que comenzó en la emisora Caruso Booy con el programa Ritmo, Salsa y Sabor. Ha participado por siete años consecutivos en la convención de radio más grande del mundo en la ciudad de Las Vegas, ampliando su horizonte y compartiendo con colegas de grandes cadenas de televisión y radio como CNN, ESPN, FOX y BBC. Su meta a mediano plazo es el trabajo social: “Ayudar a muchas personas es lo que realmente quiero hacer.” | O.G.

Desde joven practicó kárate, obteniendo una cinta negra primer dan, y su condición de atleta lo llevó a formarse como maratonista. Gracias a su dedicación y esfuerzo estuvo entre los primeros corredores de la categoría Máster de Aruba y, a lo largo de su participación en los media maratones de Aruba y Miami, además del maratón de San Francisco, ha superado sus récords personales. Gracias a una certificación del Comité Olímpico de Aruba como coach deportivo ha podido formar a otros atletas en el tema de programas y guías de entrenamiento: “Ayudar a otros atletas es lo que más me llena.” Uno de los factores más importantes para lograr desempeñarse en todas sus facetas es su familia cuyos miembros, atletas como él, entrenan unidos distintas disciplinas. Entre sus planes se encuentra prepararse para las próximas carreras de larga distancia, 21k y 42k, las cuales son su especialidad. | O.G.

After moving through the hosting and music world, as soon as he discovered the radio, he encountered the calling of a career of more than 20 years. In the National Institute of Telecommunications, in Colombia, he acquired skills to manage his vocal chords and modulation; what seemed not to be attractive at first awoke in him an unlimited stream of emotions: “I thought I was crazy being locked up in a radio booth speaking to a microphone”. Little by little he began finding his skills building a radio career in Aruba, starting with the Ritmo, salsa y sabor program, broadcasted by the Caruso Booy radio station. He has participated for seven consecutive years in the world’s biggest radio convention in Las Vegas, widening his horizons and relating with colleagues from major television and radio stations such as: CNN, ESPN, FOX and the BBC. His midterm goal is social work: “To help many people is what I really want to do”. | O.G.

For Melvin Dabian, flipping the switch between insurance specialist, coach and marathon runner is not a difficult task. Since he was young he practiced karate, earning a first dan black belt. His conditioning as an athlete made him train as a marathon runner. Thanks to his dedication and effort he was among the first place runners in the Aruban master category, and throughout all his participations in the half marathons of Aruba and Miami, and also the San Francisco marathon, he has overcome his personal records. Thanks to a certification from the Aruban Olympic committee as a sports coach, he has been able to train others as a program and training guide: “Helping other athletes is what I really like”. One of the key factors allowing him to perform in all his aspects is his family who, like him, are all athletes and train together their different disciplines. His plans include training for the next long distance runs, 21k and 42k, which are his specialty. | O.G.

ntre castañuelas, palos y guitarras nació una pasión que moldeó el destino de Siudy Garrido. Su madre, reconocida pionera del flamenco en Venezuela, fue la principal inspiración de esta bailaora venezolana para forjar su propio camino en el género más visceral de la música española: “Quería ser diseñadora de modas y mi mamá, al verme bailar, pensaba: ‘Ya cambiará de idea’. Pero a los 13 años empecé a tomar el flamenco como algo más formal.” A partir de ese instante su carrera profesional tomó un rumbo orientado únicamente a la danza y sus bondades, formándose artísticamente en Madrid y Sevilla; y en Estados Unidos en jazz contemporáneo. Posteriormente se dedicó a la coreografía y fundó su escuela de flamenco con sedes en Venezuela y Estados Unidos. Su talento al combinar el flamenco con estilos contemporáneos le han valido reconocimientos y giras internacionales, como la oportunidad de participar en la reciente edición de World of Dance, la competencia de baile televisada producida por Jennifer López. | H.P.

The passion that shaped Siudy Garrido was born in between castanets, sticks and guitars. Her mother, a renowned flamenco pioneer in Venezuela, was the main source of inspiration for this Venezuelan dancer to forge her own path in the most visceral genre of Spanish music: “I wanted to be a fashion designer and my mom, seeing me dance, thought: ‘She’ll change her mind soon enough’. But at the age of 13 I began to take Flamenco more formally, beyond a hobby”. From that moment her career took a spin solely oriented towards dancing and its virtues, training artistically in Madrid and Seville, and the USA in contemporary jazz. After that she undertook choreography and founded her flamenco school with branches in Venezuela and the USA. A degree in Political Sciences did not take him far from his vocation for theater and entertainment: “As I always say, being a politician is to be an actor”, because uniting both professions has helped him to manage his event organization company in Aruba, planning evenings where luxury and elegance are the main figures of the corporate events and weddings that he organizes. We know the human being is perfect, of whom we have a lot of knowledge and, at the same time, there is much to discover. Ironically, the more we reveal, the more we understand we are far from understanding. This is how I feel daily, inexplicable and unpredictable. If I had to define myself, I would say I am a moving energy that vibrates with its own gravitational force, a short-lived dreamer difficult to decipher. I am in constant evolution; the stereotype perceived by many judging my acting career, it is frequently altered by my career as a lecturer, and more importantly, my fascination for life, my mania for smiling and an insatiable curiosity for knowledge. Como toda obra de arte, aunque cada quien tiene una percepción distinta, todos siguen apreciando su belleza imperfecta. más de 25 años de trayectoria artística, ¿cómo describirías tu evolución desde tus inicios hasta la actualidad? > De mucho aprendizaje, nunca imaginé que iba a grabar tantos discos. En mi caso, como compositor y músico, he evolucionado también, te vas reinventando; siempre quise tener una carrera longeva porque esto era y sigue siendo mi vida. En el camino descubrí que podía escribir para otros artistas, lo que me ha servido para poder llegar a muchísima gente y a otros países a través de voces de otros. Entendí que el destino de una canción siempre va a ser la gente, cante quien la cante, la escriba quien la escriba. Así ha sido mi evolución, siempre he abrazado mi carrera, la veo con cariño y mucho respeto, con un equipo de trabajo muy lindo y tocando en vivo con mi banda, porque para mí grabar un disco es salir de gira, tocarlo y disfrutarlo.

Having passed the 25-year mark of artistic career, how would you describe your evolution from when you began until now? > It was full of learning; I never thought I would record so many albums. In my case, as a composer and musician, I have evolved as well, you reinvent yourself; I always wanted to have a long career because this was and still is my life. As time passed I discovered I could also compose for other artists, which has helped me reach a much wider audience and other countries through the voice of others. I understood that the destination of a song is always the audience, no matter who sings or writes it. That is how my evolution has been, always clinging to my career, I see it tenderly and respectfully, with a great work team and playing live with my band, because for me making an album equals going on tour, playing and having fun.

Has grabado 15 álbumes, ¿cuál es tu fuente de inspiración para componer letras tan reales? > Para cualquier escritor las historias de la gente siempre van a ser las que están presentes, las personas me preguntan: “¡Oye! ¿Cómo haces para decir exactamente lo que estoy sintiendo en este momento?” En realidad, el amor y el desamor es el mismo en todos, tal vez la diferencia es hablar de una manera muy personal y distinta. A eso me dedico, me gusta contar historias de manera diferente, me gusta mucho la metáfora. Es también parte del oficio, es una marea inagotable de inspiración porque también vivo para la música, vivo por la música.

You have recorded 15 albums. What is your source of inspiration to compose lyrics that are so real? > For any writer the people’s stories will always be the ones present, people ask me: “Hey! How do you achieve saying exactly what I feel at this moment?”. In reality, love and falling out of love is the same for everyone; maybe the difference is to speak in a very personal and different way. That is what I dedicate myself to, I like telling stories in a different way, I really like metaphors. It is also part of the job; it is an inexhaustible means of inspiration because I also live for and because of music.

¿Cómo te sientes al ver que tus canciones son éxitos de grandes artistas como Gloria Estefan, Alejandro Fernández, Marc Anthony y Diego Torres? > Feliz, muchos han descubierto mi música a través de otros artistas, entonces todos los circuitos son buenos para poder llegar al público. Pero para mí descubrir que podía escribir también para otros artistas es una bendición y un halago de que grandes voces de Latinoamérica me pidan canciones; es un placer y siempre ha sido una fuente importante de inspiración.

How do you feel when you see your songs are hits by great artists like Gloria Estefan, Alejandro Fernández, Marc Anthony and Diego Torres? > Happy, many people have gotten to know my music through other artists, so in the end every circuit is a good way to reach the public. But for me, finding out I could also write for other artists is a blessing and also a compliment that so many great Latin-American voices ask me for songs; it is a real pleasure and has always been an important source of inspiration.

Durante todos estos años de carrera, ¿cuál ha sido tu mayor reconocimiento? > El cariño de la gente de mi país, de mi tierra Perú; he sido bendecido por el amor de mi tierra que me ha permitido ser músico y llevar mis letras a la gente. Y obviamente mi equipo de trabajo, que me ha ayudado a llegar a otros países. El sentimiento que más tengo en mi carrera es agradecimiento, trabajar en lo que me gusta; ser feliz con lo que hago es una bendición y lo seguiré haciendo hasta el final de mis días, definitivamente.

Throughout all these years of your career, what has been your greatest recognition? > The love of the people of my country, of my beloved Peru; I have been blessed by the love of my country that has let me be a musician and take my lyrics to the people. And obviously my work team, which has helped me reach other countries. The sentiment I most have in my career is appreciation, working in what I love; being happy with what I do is a blessing and I will continue doing it until my final breath, most definitely.

¿Cómo has logrado mantener esa fusión de ritmos étnicos de Perú con el pop contemporáneo? > Latinoamérica en general se reconoce en ese sentido y populariza un poco lo que pasa en su tierra con lo que está pasando en el pop. La fusión siempre me ha gustado, aunque también tengo la parte del cantautor, pero siempre hay melodías que vienen del folclor y es un poco en lo que me baso.

How have you been able to maintain the fusion between ethnic Peruvian rhythms and contemporary pop? > Latin America in general is recognized in that sense and popularizes what happens in their homeland a bit with what is happening in pop. I have always liked fusion, even though I also have the singer/songwriter side, but there are always melodies coming from folklore and it is what I more or less base on.

¿De dónde nace Intuición, tu último disco? > Siempre le pongo títulos a mis discos de lo que para mí significa el trabajo, nunca de una canción. “Intuición” es una palabra que me ha acompañado a lo largo de mi carrera. La intuición es la ausencia de la razón y para hacer canciones hay que dejarse llevar, no pensar tanto. Intuición tiene 11 canciones y está producido por KC Porter, es mi disco número 15 al cual le tengo mucha fe. Ahora estamos haciendo una canción que se llama Sácala a bailar que casualmente empieza con un cuatro venezolano, estoy muy feliz con ese álbum.

Where does your latest album Intuición come from? > I always name my albums about what the piece itself means to me, never about one song. “Intuición” is a word that has accompanied me throughout my career. Intuition is lack of reason and to write songs you have to let yourself go, not thinking a lot. Intuición has 11 songs and is produced by KC Porter; it is my 15th album in which I have a lot of faith. Right now we are writing a song called Sácala a bailar, which coincidentally starts with a Venezuelan cuatro; I am really happy with this album.

¿Tienes algo pendiente por conquistar o lograr en tu carrera? > Regresar a Venezuela. La primera vez que canté allí fue en el año 90, en Sábado sensacional. Para mí y para muchos artistas Venezuela es y seguirá siendo un lugar importante a donde todos queremos regresar y después de eso quisiera seguir grabando discos, llevar mi música a la gente, creo que esta carrera se trata de ser uno y de reinventarse. Mientras Dios te dé la oportunidad de seguir creando, pues así lo seguiré haciendo.

Do you have anything left to conquer or achieve in your career? > To return to Venezuela. The first time I sang there was in 1990, in a tv show called Sábado Sensacional. For me and many Venezuelan artists it is and always will be an important place where we all want to return and after that I would like to continue recording albums, take my music to the people; I believe this career is about being oneself and reinventing oneself. While God gives me the opportunity to continue creating, that is exactly what I will do.

Being reborn. When people speak of being “reborn” they imagine a zeromile moment, an empty page, like when giving birth: “tomorrow I will be reborn”, “this year I am going to be reborn” like speaking of a white slate, similar to changing one’s identity… and then forget –something that does not happen to us parents– that being born, or in this case reborn, is the last stage of a process called gestation. In humans this process takes around nine months, and let us be honest; they are not quick! It is fun to watch how people envision a mental rebirth, which allows them to quit smoking one day, eat healthier, be less moody, rethink thei relationship with their family... and they forget that if that is to happen, it takes time to achieve it. To gestate, a human being starts off with a few small cells, develops a heartbeat, hands… and it is only after some time they are ready to be born, for this happens in different stages. In this days it is very easy to fall into the temptation of new year’s great resolutions, without taking into account that to be reborn you have to gestate again, and doing this again means having the patience of a mother: the nine months of waiting, the slow body changes, vomiting, becoming hipersensitive to other people, knowing you cannot do this on your own, not killing the husband, the pains during childbirth, leaving other things behind to dedicate yourself to creating new fingernails, a new heart, a new spine. By the way, it should be noted that all this is being generated with the cells of your old self, so some things will not change, even if you are reborn three times. I, for example, stopped teaching and directing theater at the university full-time and I set myself new goals. It took me three years to take a step forward, find the suitable person to take the reins old projects, find allies for the new ones, forget being paid every two weeks and become a freelancer... Slowly I began to gestate a career as a teacher away from the university; among other things I became an oratory teacher at the Miss Venezuela pageant; I started to participate in the stand-up comedy scene, I kept the podcast I created years ago and that gave rise to my radio announcer career… That is, the immediate and absolute rebirth does not exist. Mine has been an elephant gestation. And before I start sounding like Carlos Fraga and end up as a white-haired man with a four-colored shirt I tell you this: It is not your fault that you believe you can be reborn all at once, it is the movie’s where in a single song Rocky gets up and fight, or a girl goes, highlights her hair, changes her wardrobe and suddenly is Cinderella. But life is not like the movies, ask any mom. Gestation takes time and is fruitful, being reborn cold turkey is the recipe for the great disppointment of waking up the next day to find out you are still you, yes you, the same old person who believed that by burning your diaries, throwing out the old shirts like the Japanese lady from Netflix told you, and buying new ones like the people from Queer Eye said, you are ready to change your name. Take your time, babies do it. Oh! And by the way, all of us, even at a behavioral level, have a large percentage that genetics gives us, that is to say we inherit past traits so, despite gestating and everything, you will still be more or less the same. Heh, heh.

Cuando la gente habla de “renacer” se imagina un momento tipo kilómetro cero, página en blanco, como ese momento del parto: “Yo mañana voy a renacer”, “Este año voy a renacer”, como si se hablara de una página en blanco, de cambiarse el nombre casi… Y se les olvida —cosa que a los que somos padres no nos pasa— que nacer, o en este caso renacer, es la última etapa de un proceso llamado gestación. En los humanos este proceso toma normalmente nueve meses y, vamos a estar claros, ¡no pasan rápido! Es divertido ver cómo la gente se plantea un renacer mental, que les va a permitir de un día a otro dejar de fumar, empezar a comer de forma más saludable, ser menos malhumorados, replantearse la relación con su familia y se les olvida que todo eso, para darse, toma un tiempo. El ser humano, para gestarse, arranca con unas pequeñas células, desarrolla un latido de corazón, unas manos… y solo después de cierto tiempo está listo para nacer, pues se hace por partes. En esta época es muy fácil caer en la tentación de las grandes resoluciones de año nuevo, sin tener en cuenta que para renacer hay que re gestarse y para re gestarse, hay que tener la paciencia de una madre: Los nueves meses de espera, el cambio lento del cuerpo, vómitos, volverse hipersensible a otras personas, saber que necesitas a otros, no matar al marido, los dolores durante el parto, el dejar de lado muchas cosas para dedicarte a hacer nuevas uñitas, nuevo corazoncito, nueva espina dorsal. Lentamente comencé a gestar una carrera como docente fuera de la universidad; entre otras cosas, fui profesor de oratoria en el Miss Venezuela, comencé a participar en el circuito de standup comedy, mantuve mi podcast creado años atrás y que dio pie a mi rol como locutor en la radio… Es decir, el renacer inmediato y absoluto no existe. Lo mío ha sido una gestación de elefante. Y antes que empiece a sonar como Carlos Fraga y termine con una camisa de cuatro colores combinados y el pelo blanco les digo esto: La culpa de creer que se puede renacer de golpe no es de ustedes, es de las películas donde en una sola canción Rocky se pone a tiro para una pelea, o una chica va, se hace las mechas, cambia el guardarropa y de repente es la Cenicienta. Pero la vida no pasa en tiempo cinematográfico, pregúntenle a cualquier mamá. Gestarse es largo y fructífero, renacer de golpe es la receta para la gran decepción de que al día siguiente sigues siendo tú, sí tú, el mismo loco que creyendo que con quemar sus diarios, botar todas las camisas viejas como le dijo la japonesa de Netflix y comprarse unas nuevas como le dijeron los de Queer Eye ya está listo para cambiarse el nombre. Fundación Santa Teresa: Transformación social a través de valores SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION THROUGH VALUES ORIANNYS GONZÁLEZ

Durante más de 15 años la Fundación Santa Teresa ha implementado iniciativas en pro del bienestar de la comunidad en Venezuela, logrando la reinserción social de jóvenes en situación de delincuencia mediante la formación en valores, el trabajo y la práctica del rugby.

l Proyecto Alcatraz es un programa comunitario de la Fundación Santa Teresa que desde el año 2003 busca erradicar la delincuencia, sin el uso de violencia, entre los jóvenes del municipio José Rafael Revenga, en el estado Aragua, Venezuela. La estrategia consiste en ofrecerles la oportunidad de cambiar su estilo de vida a través de herramientas educativas y psicológicas, basadas en valores como respeto, responsabilidad, transparencia, humildad, mérito y confianza. Este programa consta de tres fases: Aislamiento, reintegración comunitaria y formación para el trabajo. Una vez que los participantes superan cada etapa, prosigue un período de seguimiento en el cual reciben apoyo durante un año, con la finalidad de que los jóvenes consoliden su nueva vida y así disminuir el riesgo de reincidencia en viejas costumbres. El éxito de esta reinserción social se traduce en cifras reales; desde su inicio, la tasa de homicidios en la zona ha disminuido de 114 por cada 100 mil habitantes a 24 por cada 100 mil habitantes en el año 2014. Adicionalmente, se ha logrado desmovilizar 10 bandas delictivas en el municipio sin el uso de represión. A partir de este proyecto surgió el programa Rugby Santa Teresa, único en Venezuela, que ha utilizado la práctica de este deporte como mecanismo efectivo para la mejora de la calidad de vida de muchos jóvenes. Este esfuerzo ha ido más allá de la comunidad pues, durante el año 2013, fue instaurado el programa Rugby Penitenciario, brindando formación en valores a más de 300 reclusos en 12 centros penitenciarios del país, como herramienta de reinserción en la sociedad. La iniciativa de la Fundación Santa Teresa ha creado un proceso de transformación social incluyente para jóvenes que durante años fueron discriminados debido a su condición social, demostrando que sí se pueden lograr cambios a partir de la enseñanza de valores, trabajo en equipo, honestidad y respeto. 56 W W W.T E N D E N C I A .C O M

For more than 15 years Fundación Santa Teresa has implemented initiatives to benefit the Venezuelan community, achieving social reintegration of juvenile offenders through education in terms of values, work and rugby training. The Alcatraz project is a community program run by Fundación Santa Teresa that since 2003 seeks to eradicate crime without the use of violence, between the youths of the José Rafael Revenga municipality, in the state of Aragua, Venezuela. The strategy consists of offering them the opportunity to change their lifestyle through learning and psychological tools, based on values as a form of respect, responsibility, transparency, humility, merit and confidence. This program consists of three phases: isolation, community reintegration and job training. Once each participant passes through each stage a follow-up period begins in which they receive assistance for a year, to help the youths consolidate their new life and thus reduce the risk of backslides. The success of this social reintegration converts into real figures; since they began, homicide rates in the area have dropped from 114 in 100 thousand inhabitants to 24 in 100 thousand inhabitants in 2014. Furthermore, 10 criminal bands were dismantled in the municipality without the use of repression. From this project, the Rugby Santa Teresa program was born, the only one in Venezuela, which has used Rugby training as an effective mechanism to improve youth’s quality of life. This effort has gone beyond the community because, in 2013, the prison Rugby program was initiated, teaching values to more than 300 imnates in 12 prisons around the country, as a tool to reintegrate them into society. l arte contemporáneo es la base creativa del grupo de artistas que, en el año 2015, fundaron Laundromat Art Space, un lugar donde la libertad para crear y los objetivos con propósito convergen para dar vida a las diferentes visiones del colectivo, de forma individual. Ubicado en El Pequeño Haití de Miami, Estados Unidos, este espacio alberga salas de talleres y de exhibición que mes a mes acogen las musas que inspiran el alma de algún creador, emergiendo posteriormente de sus manos de forma abstracta, gráfica, pintada, fotografiada o esculpida. Entonces cumple su razón de ser: Convertirse en la sala de parto de grandes obras, artistas y experiencias para los amantes del arte. “Estamos enfocados en el desarrollo de los artistas locales, estamos aquí para brindar oportunidades, para aportar ideas innovadoras”, explica Ronald Sánchez, artista hondureño, cofundador de Laundromat. Él comparte en este espacio su visión del arte con 11 artistas de distintas nacionalidades que conforman el colectivo: David McCauley (EE. UU.), Marina Gonella (Argentina), Christin Paige Minnotte (EE. UU.), Donna Ruff (EE. UU.), Erin Parish (EE. UU.), Jay Bellicchi (EE. UU.), Lisu Vega (Venezuela), Juan Henríquez (Venezuela), Andrés Martínez (EE. UU.), Luna Palazzolo (Argentina) y Pablo Contrisciani (Argentina). Lisu Vega, diseñadora y artista venezolana, considera que lo que diferencia a Laundromat de otras galerías de arte o talleres, es la posibilidad de tener un reencuentro como grupo en un espacio artístico o de tenderse la mano en exhibiciones individuales. Así mismo, la cantidad de muestras que ofrecen, producto de las colaboraciones del colectivo, supera lo acostumbrado a nivel local. La programación de Laundromat responde a la necesidad de mantener activos los proyectos dentro y fuera de Miami, para crecer a nivel local y nacional, mediante la exhibición de las obras.

Contemporary art is the creative base of the group of artists that, in 2015, founded Laundromat Art Space, a place where freedom to create and the purposeful objectives converge to individually give life to the different visions of the guild. Located in Miami’s little Haiti, USA, this space houses workshops and exhibition rooms that receive every month the muses that inspire the soul of one of the creators, emerging into an abstract graphic form like painting, photographs or sculptures. So it serves its raison d’être: becoming the place of birth for great works, artists and experiences for art lovers. “We are focused on the development of local artists, we are here to offer opportunities, to contribute in innovative ideas”, Ronald Sánchez, Honduran artist and cofounder of Laundromat explained. Laundromat’s program responds to the need to keeping active the projects in and out of Miami, during any season, to grow locally and nationally, using exhibitions, the participation of the public at workshops and even the impulse of representing these activities to “change the neighbourhood’s complexion” where they reside.

Aquel martes 20 de marzo de 1990, Gloria Estefan y sus músicos viajaban para una presentación en Syracuse, Nueva York. Una noche antes se había reunido en la Casa Blanca con el entonces presidente George H. W. Bush, con quien habló sobre un programa antidrogas que ella dirigía. La banda se adelantó y tomó la carretera. Gloria subió al autobús junto a su esposo Emilio, su hijo de nueve años Nayid y varios acompañantes. En el trayecto su vida cambió. Cuando llegó la ayuda médica, la nieve aún cubría la carretera de Pocono Mountains en Scranton, Pensilvania. Inmensos pedazos de metal cubrían el pavimento. Un camión había chocado contra el autobús. La escena era trágica. La intérprete cubano-estadounidense sufrió fracturas en dos vértebras cervicales por lo que tuvo que ser llevada de emergencia a un hospital de la localidad. Luego fue trasladada en un helicóptero a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde fue intervenida quirúrgicamente para implantarle dos varillas de titanio y estabilizar su columna vertebral. Gloria comentó que durante su recuperación llegó a pensar que su accidente podría demostrar al mundo cómo todos somos capaces de superar una situación difícil si luchamos con el corazón. Durante un año estuvo lejos de los micrófonos y los reflectores. El accidente también cambió su línea musical. Los enérgicos ritmos de canciones como Conga y 1-2-3 se transformaron en confesiones emocionales. Ya recuperada, logró completar el álbum Into The Light, el que describió como una historia de la victoria ante el desastre. El disco fue otro éxito comercial y le valió su regreso a las carteleras musicales. A este le siguió Mi Tierra, con el que consiguió el Grammy al Mejor Albúm Tropical Tradicional. Los médicos que atendieron a Gloria cuando ocurrió el accidente le habían advertido de una triste probabilidad: jamás podría quedar embarazada de nuevo. El destino iba a ser otro. En diciembre de 1994, casi como un regalo de Navidad, volvió a convertirse en mamá con la llegada de su niña Emily. Gloria supo levantarse de nuevo, vio su accidente como una piedra en el camino que supo patear a un lado. Those were happy days for Gloria. She began with the success of her solo career after 10 years in the Miami Sound Machine with whom she still shared gigs. Her songs were at the top of the US and UK charts and her album Cuts Both Ways sold by the millions. That Tuesday march 20, 1990; Gloria Estefan and her musicians were on their way to a performance in Syracuse, Nueva York. A night before she had been at the white house with former President George H. W. Bush, with whom she spoke of an anti-drug program she was in charge of. The band went ahead and took to the highway. Gloria got on the bus with her husband Emilio, her 9-year old son Nayid and various escorts. Her life changed on the way. When medical assistance reached them, snow still covered the Pocono Mountain highway in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Huge pieces of metal covered the pavement. A truck had hit the bus. The scene was tragic. The Cuban-American singer suffered damages in two cervical vertebras for which she had to be taken immediately to a local hospital. Then she was transferred via helicopter to New York City, and she underwent surgery to implant two titanium rods to save her spine. The medical prognosis was not very encouraging; the possibilities of walking again, or returning to a stage, were slim to none. Everything suggested that Gloria, 32 years of age, would need a wheelchair for the rest of her life. That wasn’t a choice for Gloria, the memories of her father on a wheelchair were another reason to keep fighting. Months of long rehabilitation therapies came after that in which she was not alone, her husband supported her all the time. Gloria says that Emilio helped her sit up, bathed her, shift her sleeping position and fulfilled the treatment she had to endure while she fought against pain. Gloria noted that during her recovery she came to think that her accident could show the world how we were all able to overcome a difficult situation if we fight with all our heart. For a year she was away from microphones and spotlights. Her accident also changed the way she interpreted music. The energetic rhythms of songs like Conga and 1-2-3 were transformed into emotional confessions. Once she was well, she was able to record Into The Light that she described as the story of victory facing disaster. The album was another commercial success and was also her return to the musical charts. Mi Tierra followed it, with which she won a Grammy for best Tropical Latin Album. The doctors that assisted Gloria after the accident had warned her of a sad probability: she would never conceive again. Destiny had other plans. In December 1994, almost like a Christmas gift, she became a mother once more with the birth of her daughter Emily, her second child. Gloria was able to get up once more, she saw her accident as an obstacle she had to overcome and she did just that. She proved herself that there is nothing impossible for those who fight for what they want with love.

Comparto estos tips para lograrlo. To live a healthier life is one of those typical goals we set as part of our rebirth. But as it all is, the process must be truthful and reachable. I share these tipsfor you to achieve it.

o existe palabra más fresca, más linda, más acorde a estos primeros meses del año, que la de “renacer”. La asociamos con cambio, evolución, adoptar hábitos o costumbres nuevas en cualquier ámbito de nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, renacer en nutrición cobra un sentido súper importante y alcanzable para todos. Algunas de las típicas metas personales son: aprender sobre nutrición, comer “mejor”, controlar la ansiedad y los impulsos por comer alimentos con gran contenido de azúcar y grasa, hacer más ejercicio... Y la lista continúa. Pero ya a mediados de año, o antes, nos rendimos porque es demasiada información, demasiadas instrucciones, presión, y no logramos ni empezar. Aquí dejo mis 10 tips claves para comenzar de la mejor manera:

We associate it with change, evolution, picking up new habits or customs, in any area of our lives. However, being reborn in nutrition takes on a super important and attainable meaning for everyon. Some of the typical goals are: learn about nutrition, eat “better”, control anxiety and the impulses of eating sugary, greasy foods, exercise more, and the list goes on. But midyear in, or even before, we give up because it is too much information, too many instructions, pressure, and we can not even begin to live in a healthier way. Here are my 10 key tips to start to be “reborn in nutrition” in the best way.

1. Anota tu meta nutricional en papel, pésate, tómate las medidas y la foto de ti al comenzar el proceso. 2. Haz tres comidas principales al día, compuestas por proteína magra, grasas saludables, vegetales y carbohidrato complejo. 3. Consume al menos dos litros de agua al día. 4. Merienda una o dos veces al día, con frutas frescas, frutos secos o porciones de proteína. 5. La proteína debe ser magra (con la mínima cantidad de grasa posible); la grasa debe ser mono o poliinsaturada como frutos secos, aguacate, aceite de oliva. 6. Los carbohidratos deben ser complejos y fibrosos: pan integral, arepa integral, pasta o arroz integral, quinua, granos, plátano horneado, batata. 7. Mantenerte activo es vital. Haz 45 minutos de cardio intenso al menos tres veces por semana. 8. Evita todo tipo de frituras, dulces, azúcar y harinas refinadas a diario. Guarda ese antojo para una ocasión especial; máximo una vez por semana. 9. Idealmente, toma un máximo de tres tragos de alcohol por semana (vino tinto o vodka/gin con soda y limón). 10. Relájate, meditar diariamente ayuda muchísimo. Enfócate en el proceso y no en el resultado inmediato; que tu motivación sea convertirte en tu mejor versión. La idea es que renazcas tú y esa debe ser la meta.

1. Write down your nutritional goal on paper, weigh yourself, measure yourself and take an initial photo. 2. Make three main meals a day, made up of lean proteins, healthy fats, vegetables and complex carbohydrate. 3. Drink at least two liters of water a day. 4. Have one or two snacks a day, with fresh fruits, nuts or portions of protein. 5. The protein must be lean (with the least amout of fat possible); the fat must be mono or polyunsaturated like nuts, avocado and olive oil. 6. Carbohydrates must be complex and fibrous like whole wheat bread, whole wheat arepa, whole wheat pasta or brown rice, quinoa, grains, baked plantain, sweet potato. 7. Staying active is vital! Do 45 minutes of intense cardio at least three times a week. 8. Avoid all sorts of fried foods, sweets, sugar and refined flour daily. Save that craving for a special occasion (maximum once a week). 9. Ideally, drink a maximum of three drinks of alcohol per week (red wine or vodka/gin with soda and lemon). 10. Relax; meditation daily helps a lot. Focuse on the process and not the immediate result; be motivated to become your best version. The idea is that you are reborn and that should be the goal.

De esta manera el chef Rob Nollé aprendió que el verdadero arte no se halla en cocinar ingredientes costosos y exclusivos, sino en elaborar algo especial con productos comunes. Él comparte sus recuerdos y habilidades en esta receta.

He learned that the true art of a chef does not lie in cooking the most expensive and exclusive ingredients but in making something special with products that everybody knows.The result of his memories and craftsmanship are shared with you in the recipe below.

recalentar el horno a 170°C. Frotar la carne con las especias chinas y la sal marina, dejarla reposar en la bandeja para hornear y luego agregar el caldo de pollo caliente. Hornear durante dos o dos horas y media, hasta que la carne esté tierna. Sacar del horno y dejarla enfriar en la nevera, idealmente durante un día, así estará firme. Mezclar todos los ingredientes en una cacerola y cocinar a fuego lento por 15 minutos. Luego, cortar la panza de cerdo en tiras finas, colocarlas en la bandeja y cubrir con el glaseado de especias. Hornear de 6 a 7 minutos. Sacar del horno, dejar reposar por 3 minutos y volver a bañar con el glaseado hirviendo para formar una capa gruesa. Servir con una ensalada ligera y un poco de mayonesa mezclada con salsa sriracha. ¡Buen provecho!

Rub sea salt and Chinese spices mix on to the meat and place in a baking tray. Pour the heated chicken broth in the baking tray. Place in a preheated oven of 170 and cook until fully soft and tender for 2 to 2,5 hours. Take out of the oven and let it cool off (Ideally this is done a day before). Assemble all ingredients in a saucepan. Gently bring to a boil and reduce on low heat for about 15 minutes. The cold porkbelly is very easy to cut in finger thick slices. Place the porkbelly in a baking tray and cover the sliced porkbelly with the glaze and place in the over for 6 to 7 minutes. After 3 minutes spoon the boiling glaze over the porkbelly again so it gets a nice layer of thick glaze. Serve with a fresh and light salad and some mayonnaise mixed with sriracha sauce.
