Preface For 20 years the power of light and its positive effects have been the key thought behind Innojok. Good light, functionality and stylish Finnish design are features of all our products. Style and good light are present in anything we do and every single day. Innojok’s business is based on light solutions that truly benefit people’s lives every day. We have renewed our brand strategy and visual look in connection with the celebration of our 20th anniversary. The Innojok logos Innosol and Innolux Design will no longer be used, and the brand will be uncluttered by transforming it into the Innolux logo and look. The catalogue you are reading right now features this new Innolux look. There are now three Innolux collections of luminaires. This catalogue contains both the Design and the Bright Collections. The Design Collection includes luminaires providing attractive, stylish and good illumination. The collection also includes models of noted Finnish designers. The Bright Collection again consists of multifunctional bright light devices promoting overall wellbeing. The Pro Collection has a catalogue of its own offering possibilities and solutions for professionals in the illumination business demanding different technical solutions, energy-efficiency and better interior decoration. The options for tailored solutions for various projects are almost unlimited. The majority of the products in the collections are produced in Finland, and they have been given the right to use the Key Flag Symbol as a promotion for Finnish work. It is important that our various production phases take people as well as the environment into consideration. We design and produce our products with responsibility always benefitting from domestic resources whenever it is possible. Since our product development, production and warehousing all take place in Finland, we act as a flexible and reliable partner when carrying out different projects. Capable customer service, uncompromising product development and reliable availability of spare parts ensure that cooperation with us is worthwhile. This smooth cooperation provides short delivery times based on our domestic production and our new, efficient logistics centre. In the future the continuous product development in cooperation with Finnish developers and designers will also be one of the solid pillars of our business. We always seek to offer our customers the best possible style and functioning solution. We are all proud of ourselves, of our knowhow and our achievements.

Nevertheless, none of this would be possible without our satisfied customers! With this landmark of 20 years in business, Innojok has more than 20 employees, over 20 designers and more than 20 sub-suppliers. Our network has expanded, just as our drive, desire to learn, courage and desire to proceed.

Jukka Jokiniemi Innojok Oy Managing Director Doctor of Science (Technology) PS. During our anniversary year 2013 we will launch more than 20 new luminaires. The new products and product updates will be marked by the violet New item tags in the catalogue.

SIPULI, Lisa Johansson-Papee 61-355 ORNO LJP Pendant lamp (1954)

Lisa Johansson-Pape sharpened the rounded Sipuli shape, so the glass lampshade remains symmetric and harmonious. Due to its angularity, the Sipuli design is nicely streamlined, and it was awarded the gold medal at the Triennale di Milano in 1954. Innolux Sipuli is particularly suitable as general lighting or installed in lamp groups, for instance in large lobbies. Terhi Tuominen was elected the Finnish Young Designer of the Year in 2009. The Tosca product line also includes a table lamp. ORIGO, Eero Aarnio Table lamp (S) and floor lamp (L) (2007)

Innolux Origo is a design lamp by the well-known Finnish designer, Eero Aarnio. Innolux Origo is expressing Aarnio’s view of the versatile use of the luminaire. Eero Aarnio’s playful style is evident in the design language of the luminaire. Origo is appealing with its pleasant round form and soft velvety surface. The upper part of the luminaire forms a smooth handle making it easy to carry from one place to another. The Origo product line comprises two design lamps, the sculpted floor lamp Original L and the appealing table lamp Origo S. The history of the Origo luminaire starts fittingly for Finnish traditions with the smoke sauna. In Eero Aarnio’s smoke sauna, there is a wooden pillar supporting a bench and in its upper edge Aarnio has himself carved a handle to hold on to. The shape of this handle inspired the designer when he started designing the Origo bright light devices. VENDA, Mirja Orvola

New!

Table lamp (2013) The airy and light Innolux Venda is available in two versions. The white framed Venda wraps itself into the incandescent white canvas. Around the black-framed Venda the old and used sails tell their unique stories. The splashes of colour on the used sails add something extra to the simple lampshades. The canvas functions as an excellent material for the shade, with shade shining in the same way as when sunlight strikes the sails. The Innolux Venda lampshades are hand-made in Finland by a professional sailmaker. It has been 50 years since the first drafts for Venda were made. The interior decorator, Mirja Orvola, developed the lamp already in the 1960s. The lamp was exhibited at the Kunsthalle Helsinki, where Yki Nummi praised it as the lamp that would be worth developing even further. However, at that time a suitable producer could not be found. In co-operation with Innojok, the designer selects the canvas to be used as material for the lampshade. The end section is either on the left or the right side of the lamp as you choose, and that way the lamp can be mounted for instance on both sides of the bed. DESIGNERS Eero Aarnio Interior architect, designer, professor h.c. (born 1932) Eero Aarnio is one of the great innovators of modern furniture design. He became very famous after he had introduced his Ball and Pastil chairs made of fibreglass in the 1960s. The production of these hit classics have been going on for decades, until today. Aarnio has been a successful designer for over 45 years. The characteristics of Aarnio’s design are playful and reduced forms and fresh colours. Furthermore, his design seeks solutions that are economically sustainable, both from the view of the users of his design objects and the production technologies. During the past years the scope of Aarnio’s creative productivity has only been widening. Every year Aarnio is designing trendy and new decorative interior objects, furniture, lighting and textiles. He has received international awards for his great design work. These awards include the International Design Award of the American Institute of Interior Designers for the Pastil Chair, New York 1968, The Finland Prize 2005, by The Ministry of Education, Finland, and The Compasso d’Oro Design award for the Trioli chair, Italy 2008. Many of Aarnio’s works are found in the world’s most prestigious museums, including Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York and Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.

“If an object is round, then there is nothing to it really. Just cut the cardboard from the centre. After all, the eyes of the blind are their fingertips. This is always similar when drawing the luminaire, then I do the cutting, and Jukka Jokiniemi gets a clear-cut impression of how it should then be done. We have a real perfect co-operation. He masters the entire technique and, I on the other hand, master this visual part, so there is no reason why we shouldn’t create even more of those lamps in the future.”

Eero Aarnio

The co-operation between Innojok and Eero Aarnio started with the development of the bright light device Origo. Aarnio has regarded the co-operation with Innojok and the company’s visually impaired managing director, Jukka Jokiniemi, as smooth:

Jussi Ahola Jussi Ahola completed his studies as an industrial designer in 1965, one of the first in Finland. He has extensive experience as a planner and designer of for instance utility articles, household appliances, electronic products, medical instruments and equipment, various types of machines, such as industrial robots, control rooms as well as outdoor and indoor luminaires. He worked as a designer in Australia for 3 years. Since 1986 Ahola has had his own office, called Ahola Design Oy. Ahola has served as professor (pro tem) in design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, visiting professor in Portugal, design teacher in Austria as well as design specialist in Malaysia.

Jussi Ahola

Industrial designer (born 1940)

The control room of Sydney Opera House, designed by Ahola at Charles Furey’s practice, was awarded the Prince Philip Prize for Australian Design in 1972. Furthermore, Ahola has been awarded several design awards for good design by the Design Forum in Helsinki and many of his works are part of a collection of the Finnish Design Museum. Since 1964 Ahola has presented his work at collective exhibitions in Finland and abroad.

Brita Flander

Ahola has published the book ‘Teollinen muotoilu’ (meaning: Industrial Design) on Otakustantamo as well as numerous articles in professional magazines and publications in Finland and abroad.

Brita Flander Industrial designer, Master of Arts (born 1957) Brita Flander is a globally famous Finnish designer. Her view of art and work composition is original. Brita Flander has designed and commissioned work for Ingvar Kamprad Designcentrum at Lund University, the Mäntyniemi Residence of the President of Finland, the church of Sammonlahti, the Oulu Cathedral as well as the Stockmann Helsinki department store. In her products Flander has worked with different materials; fabric, wood, glass and metal for several domestic companies in Finland, such as Marimekko, Artek, Iittala and Skanno.

Brita Flander feels it is important that her creations are timeless, are a part of everyday life and bring joy to viewers. For her the basis of design is harmonic proportions, which is the tool for achieving balance together with other elements. Flander has since 1987 participated in joint exhibitions in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada. She has received several honours and competition awards during her career.

Yrjö Harsia Designer, entrepreneur and painter (1927–2011) Yrjö Harsia was born in 1927 at Kivennapa, Finland, and was educated as a bricklayer at Turku Vocational Institute during the Continuation War, and he studied painting at the same. After completing his education, Harsia sailed as an able seaman for 7 years.

Yrjö Harsia

Harsia made himself acquainted with the features of plastic through practical learning and by consulting experienced specialists. After having worked with sheet metal and copper, he found plastic to be an interesting material. His initial experiments with plastic lamps turned out so well that a great demand for the lamps beyond those originally designed for his private home became evident. In designing the lamps Harsia began with a sketch which he, in his own words, “crumpled” by squeezing the models to make them resemble the sketch. Impressive lamps created by Harsia’s pen have turned up in many private homes and public spaces in Finland as well as abroad. From 1962 Harsia’s life project was to design and produce lamps for the home through his own company. In 1982 Yrjö Harsia passed the company on to this son, Martti Harsia. Apart from the design and production of lamps, Harsia also worked seriously as a painter of realistic landscape paintings.

Martti Jännes

Lisa Johansson-Pape

Lisa Johansson-Pape Furniture, textile and interior designer (1907–1989) Lisa Johansson-Pape graduated as a furniture designer in Helsinki in 1927 and her designer career was long and varied. Johansson-Pape’s career in the design of luminaires began in 1942 when she started working for the StockmannOrno luminaire factory, where she was also the artistic director. The materials she used in her lamps and fixtures were enamelled metal, acrylic and glass, and her designs of luminaires were always of high technical functionality and practical in their dedicated use of space. Johansson-Pape designed lighting and luminaires for several public spaces, such as hospitals, churches and even icebreakers and other types of vessels. Lisa Johansson-Pape’s works represented Finland in many international exhibitions since the 1930s. Her luminaires received awards at the Milan Triennials in 1951 with a silver medal and in 1954 with a gold medal in design. “A luminaire is not the actual purpose but more like an instrument. It must fulfil its purpose as a provider of light, but at the same time it must also satisfy the aesthetic demands.” “A good luminaire must be simple and its structure and function must be both neat and right”. “It was by accident that I became a luminaire artist. By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war. The luminaires began to interest me to the extent that I set aside furniture design. I am slightly more interested in luminaires and light than in design. I wish to provide every Finnish household with good light.”

Martti Jännes Graphic designer (born 1936) Martti Jännes is a designer, animator and director of advertising films, community communication information packages as well as of educational and informational short films. The production of Jännes has received awards at well-known festivals, such as two silver and two bronze lions at the Cannes Liones International Advertising Festival. Jännes planned and directed the multitool programme ”Miracle of Light” for the Verne Theater at the Science Center Heureka in the 80s and 90s. To demonstrate the colour theory he developed a transparent colour system, which functions both additively as well as subtractively. While developing the geometric model for the system,

the so-called colour space, Jännes got fascinated with geometry. It became a daily interesting point of thought. To check his thoughts he built small multidimensional models of different materials – both with and without colours. This kind of building Jännes calls crafts therapy. By coincidence the managing director of Innojok, Jukka Jokiniemi, got wind of the collection consisting of hundreds of pieces built as a result of the crafts therapy, learned more about it, made suggestions, gave clues and assignments, which in turn led to the birth of the lamps Zeneos, Zio and Zone.

Isa Kolehmainen has graduated as a product designer from the Lahti University of Applied Sciences Institute of Art and Design. Urban culture, music and movies are some of her favourite activities since she was born and raised in the heart of the capital of Finland. She was also inspired by a study period in Budapest and by living in London. She also took part to a work group called “Hetkinen!” and held with them an exhibition in Lahti and also New York. She did part of her Bachelor of Art studies in London in the environment and design line. The paths of Innojok and Isa met, when Isa started designing the acrylic luminaire Modulo of the Innolux collection for his diploma work. “Product design at its best takes the daily needs into account and solves whatever practical obstacles there may be. My goal is to design articles for everyday use in which ecological and ethical thinking are combined – all the way from material over production to the end use. For me a luminaire is an ideal design object in which you may ponder those challenging questions, and also through its design provide aesthetic joy in everyday life.”

Vilja-Valpuri Laxenius Vilja-Valpuri Laxenius graduated as a designer in early 2011 from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. She used to work at the Women’s Hospital of the Helsinki University Central Hospital in her dream profession as a midwife in the delivery room, but a progressive illness forced her to change profession. In her new career, Laxenius wants to become a versatile artist and join different design projects. One of her keen design fields is the design of children prints. The Q lamp is the “first born” of Vilja-Valpuri Laxenius. It was emerged from her last schoolwork and an idea sparked from the need to combine light with a seat in a small dark corner of a hall. Q - the quarter of a circle - provides many different configurations. Two Q modules form a semi-circle or an S-shape; four make up a full circle or a complex bench. The Q lamp functions even as an imposing space divider, an artwork of light or breathing spot in public spaces.

HaiHello, Jens Lindgren and Juho Lyytikäinen (born 1983 and 1980) Both of these young designers share a joint quality of an innovative mind and the will to design new solutions. The outcome of their creative process is a product that is functional in use and in a simple form. Juho Lyytikäinen and Jens Lindgren worked closely together on playground equipment and noticed that they both had a similar passion for product development and design. Their most important connecting factor is that they are both creative and understand each other very well. Juho Lyytikäinen: “I always try to combine my skills, like the engineering and creativity craze in me. I have always been interested in technical solutions after all, so it is beautiful with simplicity in its form.” Jens Lindgren: “My product is often based on a challenge in everyday life that I endeavour to turn into an opportunity. I am particularly interested in the design of objects and areas. In the design results I want to show that functionalism and playfulness go well together.”

Teija Marjamaa Textile designer, entrepreneur (born 1964) Teija Marjamaa has worked with glass all her life, although her education is with soft materials. She fell in love with glass at the Liminka Art School in the 80s. The design of Marjamaa is full of ideas, yet simple. Characteristics of her design are the versatile use of materials and the readiness to use different processing techniques. The glass items formed by Teija Marjamaa are timeless and structurally clear. Her bearing idea is to keep constantly creating novelties and to renew herself in her work.

Teija Marjamaa

Her entrepreneurship started in 1996, with large glass projects made with lead glass technique, melting and sandblasting. Even then, glass lamps were in production. Her most considerable work is at the Moscow International Airport, the Eden Spa in Oulu, The Big Apple Shopping mall in Espoo, the Korso Church (designer Carolus Enckell) and in the Tyrvää Church. In the early 21st century Marjamaa extended her production to designing glass jewellery and business gifts.

Muoto2 Mikko Kentta, designer, entrepreneur (born 1979) Kirsi Pasanen, designer, entrepreneur (born 1979)

Samuli Naamanka

Muoto2

Mikko Kentta and Kirsi Pasanen, i.e. Muoto2, have worked variously in the field of product design and production. Kentta graduated as a furniture designer and Pasanen as a designer of applied art. By combining their ideas and skills, they have succeeded in creating products with fine details. Kentta and Pasanen work themselves as designers and carpenters in the company they established in 2010. Muoto2 produces and develops its own products and also produces and develops project furnishings for other suppliers. The diverse use of materials and participating in the production are this designer couple’s strength. Through their previous education, Kirsi Pasanen is a carpenter, and Mikko Kenta has more than 10 years’ experience in the carpentry industry. In their products, the designers believe in the unpretentious and plain. They want to combine multifunctionality and cheerfulness in their products, not to forget functionalism. They aim to produce their products in Finland and use materials found nearby.

Samuli Naamanka Interior decorator (born 1969) “I usually aim at a new structural solution or aesthetic freshness. When everything clicks into place and the piece becomes a whole, it seems natural to design an entire range around the first idea. It’s also essential to be aware of the collection’s core: For whom are you designing the product?” Naamanka is the type of designer who is interested in developing and utilizing new materials in his own work. His invention of graphic concrete, which led to international success, is a patented process in which an image can be etched on prefabricated concrete elements. Naamanka has recently studied and developed various recyclable natural composite materials from which he had designed both chairs and tableware. Naamanka has been rewarded by the Finnish Association for Façades, Julkisivuyhdistys, with their prize in 2004 for the development of graphic concrete and the furniture designer award by the Finnish Association of Interior Architects in 2005. He was also awarded the Nordiska designpriset in 2008 at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. At the 2010 Habitare Fair in Helsinki Samuli Naamanka won the EcoDesign lamp competition for his work, called Biodegradable Roll, in which the material was polylactic acid produced from plastic-like starch sugar. The German lamp designer Ingo Maurer selected the winner.

Yki Nummi Designer, artist (1925–1984) Yki Nummi is still considered one of the most remarkable Scandinavian designers of the period from the 1950s to the 1970s. He worked as lighting designer for the Stockmann-Orno luminaire factory from 1950 to 1975 and designed hundreds of luminaires in this period. Nummi’s best-known luminaires are the Modern Art table lamp (1955) and the Lokki pendant lamp (1960). He first studied mathematics and physics at the university and afterwards took a degree in decorative painting at the Institute of Applied Arts Helsinki in 1950. Based on his education, Nummi had a steady theoretical foundation especially of the relationship of light and colour.

In addition to designing lighting, Nummi was an expert in colour schemes and design. During 1958–1975 Nummi worked at Schildt & Hallberg’s Tikkurila paint factory as head of the factory’s design and planning department and participated in R & D of the new painting mixture system producing innovative colour charts that made the selection of colours easy. That is how the Joker colour charts came about. Yki Nummi participated in a large number of exhibitions and trade fairs. He was awarded gold medals for his works at the Milan Triennials of 1954 and 1957.

Yki Nummi

Particularly as a designer of acrylic lamps, Nummi has been a pioneer in his field of work. As the new material, acrylic brought countless new possibilities to the design of lamps. In fact, Nummi used plastic without prejudice. In his view, the interesting features of acrylic were its moulding capability, homogeneous nature and better impact strength than that of glass.

Katriina Nuutinen Katriina Nuutinen studied design of applied art at the University of Art and Design of Aalto University and graduated as a Master of Art in 2011. Jarkko Oja Carpenter, studying design (born 1988) Jarkko Oja started studying design at Turku University of Applied Sciences in 2010, just after being fully qualified as a carpenter in that same year. In his design Oja values practicality and durability. The products must be both functional and durable. They should also provide novelty value to the owners and be so prestigious that you would not want to do without them even after a long time of use.

Jarkko Oja

The products designed by Jarkko Oja represent a clear-cut line of Scandinavian design. He is inspired by nature and by the sea. Traditions fascinate him and provide design impulses as well. The designer is particularly interested in combining traditions with contemporary and modern design. Jarkko Oja subtly unites his carpenter skills with his design. “The thing about wood that fascinates me is its pervasive elegance.”

Pauli Partanen Artist, designer (born 1949)

Pauli Partanen

Pauli Partanen is known for his unique glasswork, ceramics and sculptures. Partanens production can be seen at numerous public and private collections both in Finland and abroad. Partanen started his career at the Arabia factory, until he started his own company 5 years later, at first focusing on glass production. He has throughout the years worked with several interior design architects on different hotel projects. In his design, he focuses on the harmony between functionality and artistic values. The organic forms of nature, soft curves and an animated line are characteristics of Partanen’s design. Pauli Partanen describes his working method as spontaneous. Design starts with a first sketch after which he starts processing a visual model. Innojok has worked with Partanen since 2009.

Pasila Design

Pasila Design Juho Pasila, designer (born 1977) By profession Juho Pasila is a designer and specialized in furniture design. Pasila’s design is experimenting, and he personally makes nearly all his prototypes. The products represent Scandinavian simplicity with a practical touch and finish. Juho Pasila’s own design company, Pasila Design, was founded in 2012. Juho Pasila presented his collection of his first prototypes at the newcomers part of the 2012 SaloneSatellite at the Milan Furniture Fair. The same year the collection was also presented at the Helsinki Habitare Fair. Pasila has made product and furniture design for instance for the Finnish furniture producer, Adea, and the Finnish newspaper house, Suomen Lehtiyhtymä.

Irina Pått

Irina Pått Master of Art, paper artist, light installation designer (born 1944) Irina Pått was originally educated as a visual art teacher and later acquired a Masters degree from the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki. Her main work since the early 1990s has been the design of luminaires and light installations. Pått has had her own company, Lumidesign, since 1997. Irina Pått has designed paper lamps for ao. Design House Stockholm and participated in several arts exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Light has often been a part of her art works. Larger light installations have been made by combining individual lamps. In 1999 Pått’s Pyry lamp was chosen as the gift for the participants in the Finnish EU Presidency meetings. Paper lamp traditions have been missing in Finnish design traditions, except for the cardboard lamp shades used in the late 1940s. Inspired by Japanese paper lamps, Pått has designed Finnish paper lamps. Pått is using a metal grid to shape the products, and this contributes as well to the design itself. “Paper is fragile, but used right it is also a sustainable material.”

Sairanen is well-known for his elegant interior objects, which he designed for European interior design collections, such as Ligne Roset of France and spHaus of Italy as well as Finnish design company, Aarikka.

Terhi Tuominen

She actively participates in a number of international exhibitions. Her design work reflects her personality: optimistic, unconventional and playful. She creates elegant, modern furniture and products. Terhi Tuominen believes a product needs to have a meaning: function, emotion and aesthetics in a good balance. The product should also create added value, provide solutions and arouse thoughts. Terhi Tuominen is inspired by form. She observes forms everywhere, walking in the forest and strolling in the hustle and bustle of city life. In Tuominen’s opinion the very best designed product, if you might call it that, is the human being in itself. The co-operation between Innojok and Terhi Tuominen started in 2009, the same year that Tuominen received the Finnish Young Designer of the Year Prize. Light as a creator of atmosphere is important, and in the design of lamps, Tuominen is inspired by the play of light and shadow. The essential question is actually, whether we need light or atmosphere, but reality in Tuominen’s opinion is the fact that without light it is impossible to live.

Timo Niskanen

“We are surrounded with complicated and unnecessary things. I think a good product feels natural – it only bears the essential. A good designer creates an experience out of something simple and functional. An experience that is meaningful.”
